I just bought my macbook pro a few months ago. It came loaded on with version 10.6.8. I've been thinking about updating to 10.7.3, but do I have to pay for it? I already have the lion software running so it seems like a rip off to have to pay $30 for a small update.
To know exactly what version of OS X you have, go to the "apple" in the menu bar (top left) then "About this Mac", you will see your version of OS X.
If you see 10.7.x you have Lion. You can update to 10.7.3 by selecting software update.
If you see 10.6.8 you will have to buy Lion in the App Store.

I guess you can see how new i am to this, I typed my whole question in the subject. Any way, i bought this macbook pro used, no disks, need to do a complete wipe and reinstall. is there anywhere i can download the install disks to burn to dvd? Or buy either one, or maybe even a later version? Im running 10.6.8 currently. Thanks in Advance! Terry
First determine what system you really have.
Apple menu -> About This Mac.
If it is 10.7, you don't need installer discs, because there is a recovery partition:

If indeed it is 10.6.something then you'll want to call AppleCare for the discs.

If they determine the machine is older than 10.6's initial release (August 28, 2009), you'll want to purchase 10.6 retail, and/or 10.7 retail from the Apple Store.

Bruce you can do a lot but you need to be specific. Your question is so general it's impossible to get an idea what you have interest in doing. However the first place I'd start is looking into sharing on your System Preferences and before you start punching in preferences get yourself a book at a bookstore about OS X and study a little on sharing and OS X in general. I just bought a macbook pro and I want to know how to restore pictures that were backed up on iCloud but then deleted from my phone. Isn't that the point of the backup so I can delete and make more space. Please help!
Log into the iCloud on your MacBook Pro and enable Photo Stream:
Then launch iPhoto and set iPhoto's Photo Stream preferences to the following:
Then check the Photo Stream section of iPhoto:
This is to confirm that the photos are still in Photo Stream. If they are they will be imported into the library.
NOTE: not all photos in an iPhone will be in the Photo Stream. PS only keeps photos in it for 30 days.
If you have the missing photos in your library put them in an album. Connect your iPhone to the Mac and open iTunes. In iTunes you can select that album in the library and sync the photos to your iPhone to get them back on the iPhone.

The new machine has Mavericks which is fine. And I will leave it as is. I don’t want anything from my old machine other than 2 apps that I will need on the new one. I want to be able to install those apps that I bought from the App Store onto my new computer. I assume Apple doesn’t want me to have the apps installed on 2 machines at the same time so I wonder if just uninstalling them from my old machine will release them for re-install on the new one. -
I just bought a Macbook Pro with Retina and I cant' seem to connect my HTC One X+ cell phone to it. It seems that I have to download the HTC software for the phone called HTC Sync Manager, but app won't open on the Macbook Pro because it's "unidentified." PLEASE HELP! OK Folks i believe i have actually found the solution. I know i am a bit slow but i only got my New HTC One 32gb today (it was free from Three). Like you it would not connect to my Mac or work PC. So here is the way i got it to work. Download Android File Transfer if you have not already got it. Make sure you have USB Debugging setup etc. Now you need to download a free programme called SyncMate. I used SyncMate 4 because i am running OS X 10.7. There is a paid for version of Syncmate but we just want the free version as it seems to contain some drivers that will make Android File Transfer see you phone. Download SyncMate, install it as per usual and hey presto when you plug in your HTC One Android File Transfer should open automatically...BINGO!!! It worked for me which i am really chuffed about as i was just about to ring Three back up to get the phone returned. Let me know if it worked for you too :-)

I've just bought a Macbook Pro 15" and I'm trying to use Photoshop, but the resolution its displaying the images at for 100% are too small. I have to design for the web, so need to be intricate with detail, but I'm finding it adjusts the resolution of the image right down. (I mean you can see the image clearly, but it's too small to edit). When I look at Safari and see a web page at 100% it's clear, but the same page displayed in Photoshop CC appears 50% of the size (even though it says it's 100%) If I move the application window to another screen it adjusts it correctly – leaving all the pallettes, menus and tools correctly sized as they are on the retina display Is there some way to adjust the way Photoshop CC displays images so it is more consistent with what you actually see? There doesn't seem to be any answer on the Adobe forum, so hopefully someone here can shed some light. MacBook Pro with Retina display, 15", OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), Photoshop CC 2014
I tested both ways. With "open in low resolution" ckecked the size of the images is cool, but it is low-resolution including Photoshop appearance.
If "open in low resolution" is unckecked the appearance is good but the very small size.
See the image below. It has 650 x 732 px, 72 dpi. The font of the text "Neste aniversário ..." is with 18pt. -
I have just bought a Macbook Pro and sync data from my old version onto the new one...However when I tried opening the mail client...Message window does not appear. The old Macbook Pro I was using used Snow Leopard. Now with the new it is a Lion. Toruble now when I click onto new message window I have the spinning icon which show it is trying to load. Provided the computer-end fits, you are free to use one with a HIGHER Wattage rating. No damage whatsoever will be done to any component, but it will likely run cooler (but may be slightly heavier).
If you use one with too LOW a Wattage rating, you will not be able to charge and run at the same time, and your computer's top speed (for its most intensive computations) will be limited. -

Oh yes they can! Apple's policy is that you have 14 days from the date of purchase to return the comp.....no questions asked!
You should return it, get your $$$ back. Then purchased another one that has ML from a reputable Apple reseller and/or from an Apple Store (online or off).
