I am pretty sure it will always use the credit card unless payment method is set to none.
That has been my experience anyway.
They already have the money from the gift card so would rather collect from your credit card.

When its around the holiday season the purchasing system some times gets a lil thrown off and wont recognize the gift card on the account. But its easy to get fixed.

Something like this happened to me, where something went wrong on Apple's end and a movie I rented wouldn't play. I contacted Apple over the phone and they gave me back my money and fixed the problem for future use.

I recieved a gift card, I redeemed it and purchased a few songs as usual. However, when I went back to use it a few days later itunes kept trying to bill my card instead of using money from the gift card.

There's nothing wrong. Apple does not allow gift purchases using a gift card. In order to get an item in iTunes, you have to use your credit card or debit card. I know this is not what you're looking for but I hope I answered your question.

Did you purchase tunes? If so were you able to download the tunes? If yes then you made a purchase. Sometimes it takes a day or two to send you a receipt via e-mail to the e-mail address you provided when creating your iTS account - no snail mail except from your CC company for your monthly statement.

Netflix cancelled my subscription for non payment. Itunes took the money from my credit card but itunes did not pay netflix. I am being ignored through apple support and have no netflix. I would sign up with netfix without the apple store but they took $

Update.... After a 24 hour e-mail delay, itunes cancelled my subscription with netflix and refunded my money. Itunes also asked me to resubscribe to netfix through them. I called Netfix and had my subsription started again in less than 2 minutes not using itunes. It was so nice being able to talk to someone on the phone with instant satisfaction. Sorry itunes, with today's technology there is no excuse for e-mail delays.

It is simply asking you to verify your account info. Select None for the CC.
It will still pay with your gift card balance.
