Im not sure if i want to get a MacBook

Hi im new so bare with me.
Im going to college soon and i need a laptop. i'm not sure if i want to get a macbook because of all the defect problems i heard about them.
For e.g: discolouration, Burning Solvent Odor, Poor display quality, cracks on macbook, display failure and tonnes more.
I just wanted to know if the OS X 10.4.10 still had these problems, if they do, can you tell me which defects they have?
Thanks

These are all hardware issues, and (1) there haven't been a lot of these to begin with--remember that millions of MacBooks have been sold, and the relative percentage of those with such problems are small by compare. If the problem were huge or very dangerous, there'd have been a recall, as with the battery on dells which caught fire. (2) Any laptop with a problem will be repaired by Apple. (2) Most of these problems have been fixed and are not occurring on the newest MacBook out now.

OS X is software, the operating system for all Macs, and that means that if it has any problems, it will affect any Mac, not just a MacBook. It also means that any wide-spread problem will very quickly get patched and fixed, as such bugs usually are. Keep in mind that OSX has been around for a while now and it is rock solid. Bugs show up now and then when Apple tries to introduce something new, but, again, these usually get quickly and easily fixed because the OS is so well understood.

I received a text today while at work about iCloud keychain verification code. I have not signed up for it or anything that uses it. I work out of the city with limited internet access so not sure why I would be getting this. I only got this number about a month ago. Apparently someone else had the number before because I get texts from his family members wondering whats going on. I got one yesterday and the person didn't seem to thrilled that the number was cutoff and today I got 2 texts about iCloud Keychain which I don't even know what it is. Seems suspicious to me. If the person who use to own the number is doing it he should know it is not his number anymore because he obviously didn't pay his bills.  I'm not too sure about iCloud Keychain so just want to know my info safe?? It says it can store credit card numbers which is what gets me worried. Frankly I think it's pretty stupid to save that kind if information with any kind of app. But I don't want some random person trying to access my personal information because they are bitter they lost their number.  Please let me know as soon as possible so I can change passwords or anything that is needed.
    thanks

If it were me, I would go to my carrier and get a new number. Since you have only had it for a month, the inconvenience would be minimal.

I want to get a MacBook Air soon but I want to know us Apple is going to decrease the price

As BT said - no one knows. Looking at general practice - Apple may release new verisons of macbooks to replace existing once, probably at similar price. You may be able then to get the current ones at reduced prices as refurbnished ones.
The bottom line - the new macbook could come out tomorrow, or in 6 months. If you keep waiting - you'll never get one.
If it fullfils your current needs - that won't change. Go and get it. They are amazing machines. With Apple you can generaly return in within 14/30 days (depend on country) if you're not satisfied (*or if apple release new ones within that time )

  • I want to get a macbook pro but Im afraid of all these problems

I need to get a new laptop for 3D(Maya) work and some Design.. I want to get a macbook pro but I am very very worried of all these problems Ive been reading about. Whine? Too Hot? sigh....

Well here's a simple solution if you don't feel like sending in your MBP 2, 3, and 4, maybe even 5 times to AppleCare for recurring issues: Wait until the next revision of the MBPs which will hopefully bring about the introduction of the Core 2 Duo (Merom) chips. It shouldn't be too far off in the future and if the new chip is as good as everyone's saying it is, the wait will be well worth it. The CPU whine of my MBP is HORRIBLE and to me it makes the machine utterly useless when I'm working in the lab as I need to concentrate; I'm back on my PowerBook.
I realize that my situation is unique in that I'm working in a sound-sensitive environment. However, I paid the similar price tag on my PowerBook and this machine has been flawless. I bought the AppleCare for it and have yet to send it in for anything. My MBP is maybe 4 months old and has been to Apple's repair depot 4 times. In fact, for the first 2 and a half months of ownership, Apple had my MBP more than I did.
Apple may have fixed the problems by now with their newer MBPs but that's anyone guess, and it's solely a gamble as to what week build MBP you'd get and what kind of problems it will have.
My advice: I strongly recommend waiting if you can. Even if you don't work in a sound-sensitive environment, you will get great peace of mind knowing that your computer will perform, look, and sound like a well-built, $2000+ machine (hopefully).

    Hi Mayelita521,
Some have had success with light projects with the MacBook Air. Check out this article: WalterBiscardi.com | Yes Virginia, You Can Edit Video with a MacBook Air
I'd love to have one for small personal projects.

  • Old and New Lenses - Not Sure What I Want

I have a new T5. It came with an 18-55 IS lens. Light, lots of plastic. It's ok for my noob skills.
When I was last into photography 8-10 years ago I had an Élan II with Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM and 100-300 USM lenses.
First, I'm not sure how well the old lenses work on the new digital camera. Second, the older lenses are heavy compared to the 18-55.
I hike and like to bring a DSLR with me to take photos of nature.
I'm not sure if I should sell the lot and get one walk around lens, or maybe 2 prime lenses. Or keep the three. I only take one lens when I hike, though I could take the 100-300 as a second lense should any wildlife be around.
    Thoughts?

After spending more time hiking and snapping photos with the stock lens on the new T5, I decided that I really only want one lens, and a lens that has decent range, but not so much that it ends up being a cheapy lens with poor IQ.  Also, I use the cotton carrier strapshot on my hiking pack and didn't want a lens that is so heavy it affects the fit of my pack.  I visited my local camera shop and they gave me decent trade-in value on my two old and one new (stock) lens (I'm not a collector -- happy to get rid of them).  Those come off the price of the new lens before tax, so even better.  I went with the EF-S 18-135 3.5-5.6 IS STM lens (on sale -- black friday...in Canada, eh).  With the crop factor of my camera the focal length is of course longer than stated.  Got a good hoya filter on sale to put on it.  I like the fast and silent autofocusing, the improved range over my stock lens and the feel of it on the camera in my hands.  Will hopefully go test it out today!

  • I want to get a macbook pro...but

Almost a year ago i bought a late 2009 white MacBook. My mothers PC is slowly passing away so I decided i would give her my MacBook and just get a macbook pro. The problem is, i feel like any day now apple is going to come out with their updated Macbook Pros and therefor I would get more for my money. Any input/suggestions would be helpful thanks!!!

Two months after I got my early 2009 15" MBP, the new MBPs came out in June.
Am I sorry? Not at all. I had two months of wonderful use out of a very great machine prior to the new releases. It is still going strong and runs as well as those new ones. Not only that, but when the new ones came out, the 15" dropped two very important items that I use every day - the removable battery, and the ExpressCard slot. I can tell you that I would have been disappointed to have waited for the new ones only to find out that some functionality was gone!
Moral here? New does not necessarily mean better!
I would give you one piece of advice further than what's already been given in this thread... go ahead and buy now, but also buy the most computer you can afford when you do buy it - fastest, most RAM, biggest hard drive you can budget for - so that your machine will stay competitive and functional long after you purchase it. I bought the very top-end MBP available at the time, and after the new models came out, the clock speed and RAM on mine were identical to the new lineup, so mine performs just as fast as those new ones do.
It is VERY very good advice to just buy one when you need it and not worry about waiting. Who ever knows when a company will announce a new lineup or when they won't? And I promise you, six months after you buy yours even if you DO wait, something bigger and better will come out anyway. In the meantime, you will have missed a lot of use and productivity you could have had by just getting one when you wanted to.
    Just my 2 cents,
    Raji

  • I'm not sure what to do here. My macbook keeps typing the letter ƒ instead of the letter f. Capitol f is written as Ï. I'm not sure what to do.

    pls help

If you had a liquid spill there could possibly be more damage that is causing the keyboard to malfunction.
Check it with a USB keyboard if you have one available, sometimes not all functions will work with wireless.
If it functions ok you may want to get a USB as well as a wireless. I would try to borrow one if you do not have one to check things out before spending $$, to confirm that it is just the keyboard
You can have it diagnosed at a genius bar for free, make an appointment first so you don't have to wait

I wish you the best of luck with this

  • Want to get a macbook but unsure about the compatability...

Hi peeps, im looking to get a macbook for University and was wondering if there are the programs I will need... I will need a word processing program, spreadsheet, something similar to powerpoint ect (MS office stuff) Is there anything like this for the mac that is compattable with windows aswell? Also will things like printers, scanners, mobile phone software work on it aswell? Sorry if these are dumb questions.
    Thanks, Nick.

There is a Mac version of Microsoft Office, which includes Word, Excel and Powerpoint, and as a student you can get the Student/Teacher version (no limitations from the retail version other than licensing) for a good price - about $125.00 after the current rebate. Or you can get Apple's iWork '08 which has a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation application that can import and export in Microsoft Office format (with some limitations). You can also get the open-source NeoOffice which also has the same modules and also imports and exports in Office format.
As to compatibility with printers, scanners, etc. then the answer is "it depends". Many such peripherals are compatible, but not all, with older peripherals less likely to be compatible than newer ones.
    Regards.

Do I have to buy Pages again if I want it on my macbook if I have it on my desktop

You can use the Pages license you purchased. If you purchased Pages in the Mac App Store, you can install it in all your computers with Mac OS X for free. Just open the Mac App Store, log in with your Apple ID, go to Purchases and download Pages free of charge

I don't believe this program runs on a Mac. if it does it would be running using a Windows emulation program like Parallels or VMWare or running in Windows directly through a Boot camp partition. In any case it's running in Windows so you have all the experience you need.
