Im playing half life 2 on my 1.83 macbook!

Ive just installed half life 2 on my 1.83 macbook and it runs fine, perhaps slightly better than my PC! Yeah, I know it would runs much better on a modern PC, but for me, it runs fine. Ive only done the first bit of the game, but so far on hight settings im getting around 20fps, and on low setting im getting 40 odd fps
getting back into the original halflife too, its great fun online.
Im sure the thing that makes it run ok is that i have 2gb ram, so the graphics are prob using 128mb.

HL-2 is pretty graphics hungry so i'm impressed your Macbook can take it That 2Gb of RAM can't hurt, i guess.
When i installed it on my PC is blew up after the first two levels, though, so i won't tempt fate too much.
I wonder if ES:IV Oblivion wil run on it... (ironic laugh)

How well do Windows Graphics intensive games play eg. Half-life,TotalWar

I'm thinking of buying the high end McbookPro, if it can function well in Windows, as I currently use Mac OS for all business functions, but want access to online games, other games

15" Power Book Pro got enough power to run games like Battle Field 2, Half-Life 2 at comfortable 50FPS. With some tuning it can do 70FPS . This info based on 1st gen MBP and new core 2 Duo are obviously faster.

Half-Life 2 "The Orange Box, and Steam

Is there an "easy" way to get Steam installed? I thought it use to be easy to install it, and it seems to be a lot harder now. I believe just a few weeks ago, you could install with a typical "wine /media/cdrom0/Setup.exe". Now I get permission errors when trying to read the DVD, and when I google it, there seems to be a lot of manual effort involved. Previously I was using the Steam installer included with Left 4 Dead, now I am using the one in The Orange Box. Maybe I can just install the games without using Steam, since I have the DVDs?
The instructions I found had a bunch of info on copying fonts from a Windoze box so that Steam could render itself properly, I don't remember having to do that before.
I also tried to install Diablo 2, which use to install easily. My new box of CD's are labelled strangely, and wine can't install them. I get the same DVD permission errors. The old CD's were labelled "Install", "Play", and "Data" (I think). The new CD's are just labelled "1", "2", and "3".
I can post more detailed info, I was just curious if anyone had these games working using the latest boxed CD's.

Seconded. However, I don't think you even have to have a Steam account to download the installer. To run it do:
cd /path/to/installer/SteamInstall.msi

WinXP 64-bit (Half Life,CS,Doom3 problems)

I finally got this system running well.
The main reason for upgrading the hardware was for gaming. I know my Video card is weak but I will get a 6800 ASAP.
I loaded Half Life (Counter Strike and CZ), Steam [which loaded HL CS Source Beta, and Doom3. I can run steam. However when I try to open Counter Strike or HL I get a quick screen flash and nothing happens. Do I need to move or modify the HL launcher file? Will it work at all? I can launch and play the HL Source Beta version and it is awsome. However my clan (team) and friends are playing the normal version of CS, (1.6).
any ideas?

A few important things to point out:
1. Win XP 64-bit is not ready for prime-time yet, and for the most part, gaming benchmarks run on XP 64-bit are slower than the same benchmarks run on the same machine using 32-bit Win XP. The main reason for this is that 64-bit hardware drivers are (for the most part) nowhere near as refined as their 32-bit counterparts. I recall reading a recent review where it was stated that 64-bit drivers for the ATI Radeon crashed/refused to run with several games/gaming benchmarks. It's possible that this is the source of your problem (the article also noted that the 64-bit nVidia drivers worked quite well with all the games/gaming benchmarks, so maybe once you have your 6800U everything will work just fine). Regardless, it may be a good idea to "borrow" a copy of 32-bit Win Xp again and try installing/using that instead of the 64-bit version.
2. Your probably can't boot from the old HDD because the copy of Win XP on it has hardware drivers installed for a system who's configuration is different than that of your new computer. Making it work *should* be possible (if extremely tedious). You'll need to place the HDD back in a computer where it will boot properly, and then remove your existing chipset/hardware drivers and install drivers appropriate to your new setup. Once this is done try the drive in the new computer again. Note that if something goes wrong here, then the OS will not boot in EITHER system.
3. HyperThreading is typically used to refer to the P4's ability to cause itself to be viewed as two logical processors by the operating system. I'm not sure if the term applies to the Athlon64 at all, and regardless, it does not mean that that you get to have two computers at once functioning independently of each other...just that the system is more efficient at handling multiple threads running at once (so if there are two demanding programs running at once, the HyperThreading system should in theory outperform the non-HyperThreading one...although even without HyperThreading support, any modern CPU has all sorts of efficient ways of handling multiple threads simultaneously).
4. If you want to have two OS's booted at once, it can be done however...there are special programs you can use, like VirtualPC, that will let you boot a second OS from within your first OS (so that you can, for example, run linux on top of Windows). The downside to this is that there's a performance hit that you take when you start running operating systems on top of each other like this (the first oeprating system consumes its normal amount of resources, and then there's an added layer of interpretation necessary to translate commands from the second OS into commands the first OS can understand and then have the first OS execute the commands and then have the results passed back in to the second OS...and so on).
...also, you may want to try disabling DEP.

Satellite Pro L100 PSLA4: ATI graphic card crashes in Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2

Hi,
I have a Sattelite Pro L100 (PSLA4) with ATI Radeon Xpress 200M graphics card.
While playing Team Fortress 2 and Half Life 2 Episode 2, the system often crashes (screen goes black, then blue, then computer automatically resets). After restarting, the Microsoft Error Report tells me that it is a problem with the ATI card display driver and recommends updating the driver.
I note Toshiba has not released a new display driver for this card since 2005, and attempts to update through the ATI website do not work.
Is there any way to update the graphics driver, or does Toshiba have any plans to release an update.

I have had various problems with the outdated graphics driver for quite some time, and never knew about the Omega Drivers site, but everything works now thanks to you. I couldn't update the driver using the "Install from specific location", but I just ran the setup program that I downloaded from Omega Drivers, and it installed and worked fine.

Are these songs that you purchased from the iTunes Store or imported from outside of iTunes? If there are iTunes purchases, delete them from your main iTunes library and redownload them again at no cost via iCloud.

Nokia 101 is not playing half my MP3 files

Bought a new Nokia 101 couple days ago.
Installed an SD card with several MP3 files (mostly audio books, some music). All these files play without a hitch on all devices I'v tried them on - right from bare basic phones, smartphones to comps.
Bit I find that a approx half of them won't play on the Nokia 101!. Error message displayed - "File format not supported. Please select another song".
Discovered that this phone has a ridiculous limitation of not being able to play MP3 files of bitrate lower than 32 kbps. So checked all the files and after eleminating the < 32 kbps files, it is still not playing about half the files that are well above 32 kbps. The other half or is, it plays well. So its not like the MP3 player is totally broken.
What could be the issue? Please help, as I need the phone to play these files if it is to be of any use to me.
Quite disappointed with Nokia, as no other phone or player has such issues with playing anything.

@Srikant - Are you sure? Nokia Care told me on phone that it can be done; and asked me to bring the phone. My concern is that I currently don't have the time for it, and was hoping to find some solution here. Nothing is worse than having to take the time and effort for taking a brand new product for service.
I don't see a PC interface port on the 101 like the one on my 1112. But I don't know if there is one inside the cover or something... haven't checked.
While we would all like to use MP3s of high bitrates, its not always a choice we can make. I have some files of <32 kbps, and I now know this amazing phone can't play them. But I really don't understand why it isn't playing half my files that are in the whereabouts of 50 kbps. Its not possible to get these files at originally higher bitrates. I guess I could try to encode these files at higher bitrates, but thats not going to increase their quality! Besides, these are audio books and no music, so the files at existing bitrate are fairly good. And really, why should I be spending time in doing all this, when every other phone, including very basic ones can play these files on the same SD card without a hitch?
I mainly bought this phone as a secondary phone for some voice calling and for its MP3 player. It fails badly at both jobs as its single speaker design makes any privacy on calls impossble - everyone around can hear the opposite person loudly. And as an MP3 player it fails for the reason above, for having a barely ok speaker (not quite good enough even for audio books) and for being so bare bones as to not even have a seek option, which is a REALLY bad thing when you are listening to audio books.
Even no-name Chinese phones can do a better job.

I have Bootcamp on My MacBook and I am running Half Life 2 on it and it works just fine untill it does an Auto Save then Half Life quits I don't know if it is the graphics or what I have a 15gb partion with 7gb left and 1gb of ram it is a core duo 1.83GHz so it should run. any help

Downloaded songs from iTunes only plays half way and it cut off

I downloaded an album in the itunes store and the first and last songs only play half way through in itunes and then stop. My iphone sync'd wirelessly and got the complete songs. Any ideas on what happened? Can I redownload them?

To be of any assistance I need more info.
Are they playing normal in iTunes or iPod?
if skipping in iPod, are you listening via the earphone jack or the iPod Docking station?

My i-pod nano plays half of a song then stops

my i-pod nano plays half a song then just stops and then turns its self off !!

I have the same problem on many songs in my 8GB NAno.
Many Songs in my Nano do not play completely. These songs played ok on my PCs and on my 20G iPod. The bad songs would play for several seconds to couple of minutes, then the play back would stop and my Nano would jump to the next song. Those bad songs were ripped from my own CDs and not downloaded from the web.
Note that I have used 2 versions of iTunes (7.0x) and 3 version of iPod software. They are all in MP3 format and less than 5 minutes long.
I have reset & restored the Nano and reload all the songs (about 7.4G in my 8G NANO). The problem remains. I have purchased another 8G Nano and reload all the songs. The problem remains. I have reset the new Nano and reload the songs using the USB cable from my iPod, the problem remains. All the 'bad' songs would play OK in my PCs and iPod.
As this is my second Nano and third USB cable used to transfer the song, the only remaining causes of the problem is the Dell PC or the Nano firmware/ software.
Out of the the 7GB of music in my Nano, I estimate there may be over 100 songs that are bad (as I have not play thru all of my songs). I do not think it is worth my time to re-rip all the bad songs from my CDs, so the only 2 things left to do is to restore the Nano and reload the song from my desk top PC; Or return the Nano to Apple.
Any ideas or suggustions?

Starts playing half way through songs

i know this is probably a very trivial problem but my i tunes has started playing songs from where i last listened to them.
for example if i play half of oasis songbird and skip to the next track, the next time i play songbird it starts from where i left off.
this is very annoying and i cant find any way of stopping it. ive tries closing and re opening and shutting down my pc but neither helps.
any ideas would be greatly appreciated

It sounds as though you have "remember playback position" checked in Get Info>>Options tab.
If you have this set in a lot of tracks, this check box is available if you use get info on a selection of multiple tracks.
