Im trying a home network between Mac and Win 7, but its very slow

Hi guys,
ive searched for this for the last couple of days, but i havent found my sollution yet.
I have been trying to setup a network between my macbook and win7, and it works...i can move data.
The problem is that it is VERY slow. (2MB/sec max in the monitor app, it takes 6 minutes to transfer 1GB)
This is my setup:
Macbook 2011 ML 10.8 (I use WiFi to the router)
Zyxel P-2601HN-F1
Dell PC (connected thru ethernet cable to the router)
The ethernet adapter of the Dell is 192.168.1.37 and its a new cabel.
So i type in CMD-K, then smb://192.168.1.37 and connect with user and pass
I tried all the stuff i read here, like changing channels, but it stays really slow.
The crazy part is when i do both in Wifi, its almost as fast as with cable...and i DO use different ips in the smb connection
Maybe im going wired all over the studio and my house, but i would be awesome if this would work at least at 10/20MB/s, thats almost usb stick speed.
please help,
wendel

So i bought the Airport Extreme and hooked up all my hd's on the usb port...
the wireles upload speed from macbook to hd's is 5-6MB/s which is a lot better (40-48Mbit/s)
in the end i think its a protocol & adapter settings issue, with Windows using smb2, and apple using some old protocol from the 90's in ML 10.8.x
Also, there are a lot of (for me) complicated network adapter settings one has to know, before getting great transfer speeds between Win and OSX...so its easy to mess it up in Windows 7.
I read that Mavericks switched to smb2 too...so let's wait for all my software to be mavericks compatible and see how fast that will be with my Airport Extreme!

  • I am unable to share files satisfactorily over my home network between Mac and Windows

    Please advise.
I have an iMac with a LaCie Thunderbolt external hard drive and a Windows 7 laptop connected via ethernet network to a Belkin router with a WD MyBook Live Duo attached to it via USB.   The iMac also has a virtual PC in it using VMWare.
I have never been able to get file sharing to work satisfactorily across the network.
From the iMac, which is now running Yosemite, I can access the laptop and the external hard drive fine, but connections to the WD network drive are very slow and unreliable.
From the laptop, I can access the iMac and the WD network drive OK but while the LaCie share formatted for windows is visible, I am unable to open the individual files.
I was advised that I need a server.  I have therefore bought and installed OS X Server on my Mac but I don't understand it and have absolutely no idea what to do to make it work.  I open the LaCie share for example and cannot change anything - I get the message " 'Ignore ownership on this volume' is turned on for the volume containing the Share Point.  All permissions will be ignored.  This can be turned off in the 'Get info' window in the Finder."  Except it can't, because there is no such option in that window.
I can find no help  anywhere for this.  Please tell me how I set my network up so that files can be shared freely across it.

  • How can i change when i start the mac book pro, between mac and win?

when i start the mac book pro, between mac and win?

If you want to set which OS your system boots into (provided Windows is installed using BootCamp and not a virtualization option such as Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox), just hold the "Option" key down when you turn your computer on.  Continue to hold the key down until you see the options for booting into the OS of your choice.  Just click on the arrow under the one you wish (tap to click won't work here if you have it enabled... you'll need to physically click the trackpad).  If you want to change which OS your system normally boots into, just go into System Preferences in OS X and select "Starup Disk".  Whichever OS you select here will be the OS your system will automatically boot into.

  • Has anyone tried home sharing between mac and windows using parallels on the same machine?

I recently purchased a mac, and plan to set up parallels for windows and windows 7 so that I can use the Windows version of Over Drive Media Console from the library and download WMA files in windows (limitation with mac version for wma downloads). I would like to synch to iTunes on the Mac iOS, but will need iTunes available in Windows to transfer the books I download in WMA format from the library to my iphone. Has anyone tried this? Any success or suggestions would be appreciated!

In case anyone is interested, last night I installed Paralells, Windows, Overdrive Media Console on Windows, and then was able to download my book in WMA format. I was hoping parallels would allow me to crossover sync to iTunes on the Mac and have Overdrive recognize that I had iTunes open, but I had to choose Windows or Mac when connecting my phone through the USB and had to choose Windows in order for it to successfully transfer. I was able to get it to work it is now synced to iTunes in Windows. The nice thing was that it pulled in all my music/apps that I had set up in the Mac side, so I didn't have to go through that exercise again. I tested it on my old phone. Now I need to decide if I want to set up my current phone on Windows or Mac, it seems that once synched it only opens the device in windows, I haven't figured out how to force the choice between mac or window again. If I do windows, I can't take advantage of the cloud or iphoto/imovie directly. I'm totally new to mac, but I think I'll have to import my photos manually.

  • Best Design for Home Network Between PC and Mac

    Good day, all!
Forgive me if this has been covered before - I could not find a thread addressing this very issue.
I have an iMac, and my wife refuses to give up her PC.  She is also not that great at routinely backing up her PC laptop, leaving it to me to do it periodically.  To address this, I purchased an Airport Extreme and hooked up an external hard drive, hoping that she would use it (she doesn't).  I partitioned the hard drive such that half is formatted for TimeMachine (I periodically hook up my iMac physically to the hard drive to perform back ups) and the other half is formatted such that both the PC and Mac can access it, though neither can automatically back up to it.
(If you've made it this far: thank you, thank you, thank you.)
I would like to set up the network in a more efficient manner.  I realize that doing so will likely preclude me from taking advantage of the TimeMachine function, but I would like to design this home network such that my wife's computer will automatically back up to the hard drive (she has tons of pictures and does not routintely back them up) and allow all computers to easily access and "sync" with the external hard drive.  In other words, I would like to create a way in which the local hard drive of each computer (or a folder within) mirrors the contents of the network (Airport Extreme) hard drive.
I understand that Dropbox sort of does this by having a folder on each machine that syncs with each other and with an off-site server, but I prefer to keep it local (and not pay a monthly fee).
Is this possible?  Or should I simply maintain separate hard drives for each computer?
I appreciate any and all help.
    James

Ok, first be aware that Apple does NOT support Time Machine backups to an AirPort Disk (an external USB HDD connected to an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)). These may appear to work for a while, but it's only a matter of time before them become corrupted ... and I highly recommend that if your data is critical to stop using this method.
At best, the AirPort Disk can be used for file storage. It may also be possible to use it with a Windows-based backup solution, but not Time Machine. One example product for Windows is Genie9's Genie Timeline Home which is similar to Time Machine in operation.
With that said, the best backup performance (for either OS) would be to either use a dedicated external HDD attached to each device or to use a dedicated NAS device ... preferably connected by Ethernet. Some NAS devices also provide Time Machine support. One of them is the Drobo FS.

  • Home Sharing between Mac and PC

So I have Home Sharing enabled on both my Mac and PC, and signed into both with the same apple ID.
From my pc, i have installed the latest version of Itunes, and on my mac I have the latest version of Itunes.
I can access my library on my mac from the PC, but I cannot see any of the things located below.
When prompted, enter your Apple ID and password.Note: Be sure to use the same Apple ID when enabling Home Sharing on all computers you intend to share with.
    Click Turn On Home Sharing.
Use the above steps to enable Home Sharing on additional computers on your home network.
    Setting up Automatic Transfer
Automatic Transfer can transfer your newly-purchased apps, books, music, TV shows, and movie purchases to your other computers set up for Home Sharing. To automatically transfer content between computers, click the Settings button in the lower-right while viewing a Home Share and select which content to transfer. Automatic transfer of iTunes Store content is off by default.
Note: The Settings and Import button aren't present if you're using Music Sharing, which is different from Home Sharing.
Automatic transfer applies to new purchases from the iTunes Store whenever they are made. However, updates aren't transferred (such as those from the App Store).
Automatic transfer only applies to iTunes Store content you purchase or download after enabling Home Sharing.
Previously downloaded or non-iTunes Store content can only be manually transferred. It may be necessary to authorize iTunes Store content for playback on other computers.
Audiobooks purchased through the iTunes Store can be automatically or manually transferred.
Home Sharing can't transfer or stream audiobook content purchased from Audible.com. SeeAudible.com for assistance in using their content on multiple computers.
In addition, rentals from the iTunes Store can't be streamed or transferred to another computer using Home Sharing.
    Home Sharing tips
The best way to avoid duplication is to use the Show menu located in the lower-left corner. Choose "Items not in my library" before transferring any content.
I do not have a drop down menu in the Home Sharing window, and also cannot choose items not in my library.
MY question is, how do I copy my purchases from Itunes  from my mac to my pc????
    Step by step please.

    Hi clissmann,
It sounds like you simply wish to have your purchases on both your Mac and your PC. You can accomplish this by accessing your past purchases using the information in the following article:
Download past purchases - Apple Support

  • Home Sharing Between MAC and PC Problem

    Hello all,
I am having an issue with home sharing between my iMac and PC. Here is the setup:
IBM x61 tablet with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit- I run itunes and see the iMac's itunes library just fine and can import perfectly
iMac with Snow Leopard- iTunes can see the IBM's library but can't load the library; it gets hung up. Also, the icon next to the library from the x61 is a music symbol and not the home icon so I know something is wrong. I have tried everything in the troubleshooting section of the apple support page besides opening the ports. It seemed to have happened witht the latest iTumes update.
Should I try port forwarding? I use a d-link 815 router and have avira anti-virus. Has anyone had success with windows 7 firewall and the ports?
Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.
    Diggs

I'm not 100% sure of the terminology used by Windows or any other Windows firewall programs but in essence what you want to do is allow those port to pass through. Forwarding sounds correct to me. Do you only have one firewall active? I know Windows has its own built-in firewall and some security software also install firewalls and I know some people don't realize that they are running two and should turn one of them off. Not sure if you amy be running into that problem.
Here is a thread where someone shows what they did with their firewall settings to get things to work.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16495919#16495919
Also, I wrote this for someone else. It explains how sharing in iTunes works. Maybe it can help you to troubleshoot your problem.
Home Sharing is enabled by selecting Home Sharing from the 'Advanced' menu (see screen shot below) and entering your Apple ID and password. Home Sharing allows unrestricted access to the shared iTunes library from computers on the network as well as from iOS devices. Home Sharing is required for access by iOS devices, they do not work with Library Sharing. Home sharing also allows you to copy media from one computer to another, something you can't do with Library Sharing. Home Sharing overrides Library Sharing if both are enabled.
Library Sharing is enable by selecting 'Share my library on my local network' in iTunes Preference (see screen shot below.) Library Sharing does not work with iOS devices. Library Sharing only allows for the playback of media from shared libraries. You cannot copy media from one computer to another using Library Sharing. The 'Status:' indicator will display a count of the number of computers that are connected to your library using Library Sharing. Home Sharing connections will not be indicated here. You can also restrict who can connect to your library using a password. This password restriction has no affect on Home Sharing connections. They are authorized and controlled by the use of Apple IDs.
How to tell if you are connecting to a library shared by Home Sharing or Library Sharing (see screen shot below.) A Home Sharing library icon looks like a house with a musical note on the side. A Library Sharing icon looks like a stack of CDs with a musical note on top. They are both labeled by the name of the shared library as configured in iTunes Preferences.
I think I've covered everything and hope this helps people understand the difference between the two types of shared libraries and how to configure each.

  • Creating network between Mac and Linux

Hello guys! I need to set up network between my iMac and Ubuntu linux. iMac is connected in internet by Airport and Fon Wifi Router witch is connected in router which is connected to adsl -modem. My pc is connected directly to router. Both computers have access to internet. Is there any easy solutions to share files with mac and linux? I don't need any webservers etc, I just want to share files.
Other question related to this, why is my mac's ip address like 192.168... and linux ip addrress is 84.250...?
    Thanks allready!

Though I'm not newbie with computers, I'm really confused becouse I haven't set up network like this never before.
Not a problem, no worry... we all know something somebody else doesn't and vice versa.
My linux says that my DHCP -IP is 193.210.18.18, is that related to this in any way?
Yes, if the Mac had an IP of 193.210.18.x, (but not 18 for x), then connection would be simple, but I think we must have two devices passing out IPs. What is the Mac's IP again?
    http://www.helpdesk.umd.edu/topics/communication/ethernet/office/winxp/2882/
Do you have any advice where I could start looking from the right IP of my linux?

I'm not sure if its even configurable.

Hi Eric and welcome to Discussions and the Apple world.
Mac OSX can read and write from Windows partitions (like the BootCamp Windows partition you are about to create) when using FAT32 as file system for Windows.
However with FAT32 you are limited to a partition size of 32GB.
Mac OSX can also read from Windows partitions that uses the NTFS file system, but it can not write to them unless you use a third-party helper like either Paragons NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ or NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/
Windows can not even see or use a Mac OSX partition without additional help by MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

  • Problem trying to build an ad-hoc wifi network between Leopard and Win XP

    Hello,
I hope this question was not previously posted despite my attempts to find one related.
I am trying to do something that sounded very basic to me until I tried to do it : connect a Windows XP equiped PC and a Leopard equiped Power G4, through an ad-hoc wifi network (in order to later develop a crossed platforms client/server app ).
    What I did :
    - Create a network from Leopard using both default (11) and specified (6 <-> default one under Win XP) channels
    - Connect to this (detected) network on Windows.
    - Try to ping (in a terminal with the suiting IPs) between each other...
But this looked like they are not connected, or that they cannot discuss together, though they are obviously connected together.
I also tried to create the network from Windows (although it is not as friendly as it is through Leopard Interface), the same way, but without the possibility to specify the channel (that should be 6 according to some forum read on the net ). I then connect to it through the PC and the Mac. The result is the same... indeed! No Ping, no telnet, nothing...
Then, I am wondering if there is something that is so specific to each platform that they cannot connect together or if there is something I did wrong. Since I am not used to networking and, furthermore, the Mac World (ie newcommer to it), I may have missed some basic thing. So, I any of you have an idea, it'd be welcome .
Thanks for reading, and in advance for trying to figure it out.

I managed to connect them finally. But I still can't understand what was the exact problem, though I know now where it was :
My Win PC was also connected to a company network. When I disconnected it and connected it with the Mac instead, everything suddenly went fine! It also works of course if no computer is connected to the company network.
Now, this solves my problem but does not answer my question. There are obviously skills I missed about networking.. do any of you know why the connection of this company network ruined my ad-hoc network when connected on the PC and not when connected on the Mac?

  • Repeated lost of AirPort Express signal on home network w/ Mac and Dell PC

After a year of steady, reliable home wireless network access with an AirPort Extreme base station and an Express relay in the upstairs, I am suddenly, repeatedly losing signal strength from the Express relay. The Express goes into a flashing amber status when the problem occurs. To solve the issue, I have successfully been able to restart the Express, which works for 12 to 36 hours before the situation happens again. What could have happened to cause this sudden recurring problem and what can be done to resolve it longer term?

Hello kkinva. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference that has been introduced recently in the immediate area that is preventing you from getting a good clean signal between the base stations.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like MacStumbler or iStumbler to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

  • How to create a wifi network between Mac and iPhone

    Hi there,
I have just wired Internet at my house, and i would like to create a network with the wifi of the mac, to connect my iPhone to the Internet.
    Is that possible?
i have tried to do, I've created a network, encrypted it, the iPhone recognize it, but when i try to use safari, the following message appears.
"safari can`t open the page because it can't find the server"
So, is that possible and i am doing something wrong, or it isn't possible?
    thx in advantage
    Marcelo França
    Brazil

This is a possibility. But please be aware using your Mac to emit a WiFi connection is a temporary solution. And it will get a short range unlike an actual WiFi Router. Also you may find it to be unstable at times. The Airport Card in your Mac was not designed to be a full time Router WiFi emitter. But more of a receiver to get the signal and use it for personal use.
    1. Unlock the network on your Mac make it an open network
    2. Go to your iPhone, Settings-Wireless-Tap on blue circle next to network name, Choose Forget network
    3. Now go back, It will rescan and find an open network, Connect, and see if Safari works
If Safari works, Then you had a Security issue. Try using WEP 128 bit 13 character passkey or WEP 8 Character Passkey.
    Cheers and best of luck
