Im trying to install ios5 iphone 3gs
it comes up on itunes saying
"this iphone could not be restored, an unknown error occured" (3200).
this happend when trying to update to ios5 on the latest i tunes 10.5
please help!
The reason for getting all of this errors is because of the apple servers getting overwhelmed by request for updates.. remmeber is not just the US updating is the rest of the world as well.. the only way to fix this errors ot eirhter continue to update until you get through of wait a couple of days to update..
errors codes mean that the servers cant cope with all the request for software download. it is not the software tht is bad or buggy, So quit blameing apple for it.. if you do a little google searching you will find allready a bunch of reports of server being overwhelmed... so be paitient...

edit the hosts file on your computer and remove any lines that contain gs.apple.com. Disable your antivirus and firewall.

If so, it's most likely an issue with your carrier

I have exactly the same issue as described above : I installed the update 5.1.1 on my iphone 3GS and since then, I can not turn it on anymore. In Itunes, I get an error 37 when I am doing a restauration and it stops.
This error has nothing to do with firewall : I tried to restore the phone on several computers, including in an Apple reseller and it did not work anywhere.
I spent several hours on phone with the hotline from Apple which arrived to the conclusion that it is a hardware issue, but the phone was working perfectly fine until I installed this update! -

I have the same issue exept my phone doesn't ring for incoming calls. I've tried every fix, restored the phone and spent over an hour on the phone with Apple Care doing a second restore. The supervisor told me that he hadn't heard of the issue at all and came to the conclusion that I'd somehow broken the silent switch and that I'd have to pay $150 to have it repaired, despite my insistance that it was obviously a software issue since the problem started immediately after I updated to iOS 6. Total BS. I want this issue resolved immediately considering that the phone is virtually useless to me if I have to carry it around and continually check for notifications and incoming texts, phone calls, etc.

You need iTunes 10.0 or greater to update your phone...iTunes isn't confused at all. If you're on a Mac, you'll need OS X 10.5.8 or greater to update iTunes to 10.0 or greater.

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.

If the screen shows a plug going to itunes, then you have no choice, It's in recovery mode. You'll be given the chance to restore from a backup either from itunes or icloud.
I assume when you got the message to update (was this for the ios or update some apps?), that was before the device when dead. At any rate, doing a restore does not change the ios. -

I was trying to sync my iPhone 3GS and it is now stuck, saying I'm in recovery mode. I am thoroughly confused now after researching online. I'm scared to restore to original settings as I don't want to lose everything, apps, contacts, etc. Help! Is there a way to get it all back if I do restore?? Can I my stuff back through iCloud??
Bad news first and we hope for good news as well
The device is in Recovery Mode and the data has already been deleted, you need to restore the device with iTunes in order to get the iPhone back into a working state
When the iPhone is restored you can then restore it from your latest backup using iTunes or iCloud and regain some, if not all, of your data.
The good news part only happens if you had a backup.
