Im trying to relocate my itunes to an external hd, now itunes cant locate

Hiya to anyone who can help, i have followed instructions to put my itunes library onto my external hd, but when i get itunes on another pc to open the hd, it has listed the songs but cant locate them, so i thought i hadnt copied them properly.
So i went back to my original itunes library on the hd of my pc, went into edit, preferences, advanced, changed my file location, had keep my itunes folder organized ticked but not the other. clicked ok, went into consolidate files and now itunes cant locate any of these songs either.
Please help, i dont know what else to do, i have spent hours on this when i am suppost to be revising. Please Please help me.

I am having a lot of trouble understanding what you have done because you still haven't explained exactly wheat you did to get your music on your new PC or where the files are located.
iTunes is very fussy about the exact location and name of files and folders and it it will loose them if there is any change after you added them to iTunes.
Which drive had you music files at the moment and what is the name the music folder?
If you look on the advanced tab in itunes preferences, what is the location of the iTunes Music folder and is it the same as the folder containing your music?
Is your itunes library file (iTunes Library.itl) in Music\iTunes or have you put it somewhere else using a shift key start.
Did you start with an empty iTunes library on the new PC and add your music files using File>>Add folder to library, or did you do something else?
I think you probably need to delete all the tracks from your library and then add them again with File>>add folder to library, but I can't be sure without understanding exactly what you have done.

Turn your phone off and connect your cable to the computer, but not the device just yet. Start up iTunes. Now, hold down the home button on your phone and plug it in to the cable - don't let go of the button until iTunes tells you it's detected a phone in recovery mode. Now you can restore to factory settings.
Unfortunately, the data on your phone is already gone if you're seeing the connect to iTunes logo.

Thanks.  I have followed all the instructions as recommended and nothing has worked so it looks like the restore/update may have been interrupted - would loss of internet connection do this?
Yes it would, possibly even brick it.
Have successfully connected my ipod nano with iTunes so looks like the device driver is working.
Can I use my ipod nano USB connector to check?
It is not much help to you, since the device that you need still not recognized.
Anyway looks like I may have to swallow the loss of data.  Have set-up a call for tomorrow with Apple support so will wait until after this before doing the factory restore!
Good luck, but if you expect miracle from that call good luck again.

  • Upgraded to iTunes 8.1.1 and now iTunes does not recognize iPod

I recently upgraded to iTunes 8.1.1 and now iTunes does not recognize iPod. The iPod says "Do Not Disconnect" but the device is not listed in iTunes so it will not sync.

Hey, we are having exactly the same problem! My old ipod died a slow death so I bought a new nano 16gb 4th gen and I can't use it as itunes isn't recognising any ipod being plugged into it. I've been through the whole support database and every USB port is working on the laptop, so I know the computer is recognising its there its just itunes itself - even removed and downloaded it again but no change! If anybody has any ideas what is going on please let me know!!!!

  • TS1363 Just installed the new ITunes (running Windows 7) and now it cant see my IPhone

Just installed the new ITunes (running Windows 7) and now it cant see my IPhone (which it saw fine just a few minutes ago). So I can't do a backup etc. What's wrong and how do I put it right?

Well, without my doing anything, the situation has now righted itself. I came down this morning, switched on the computer and the IPhone - and now ITunes recognises the IPhone (it is listed under "Devices", which it wasn't before)
I notice however that the IPhone doesn't get listed under "Devices" until the backup process is complete. So maybe this points to what may have been going on before? Except that the reason I was worried was because the first thing I wanted to do after dowloading the new version of ITunes is make a backup - and I couldn't because ITunes didn't "see" the phone.
Anyway, not the first time I have had the eerie feeling that my relationship with IWorld is not in my control.

I can no longer sync my iphone 4, ipad 2 or ipod touch with itunes on my PC since updating itunes.
Itunes does not recognise any of the products but the PC does , Have tried reinstalling itunes but no different
    any suggestions ?.

I similarly upgraded iTunes in my Windows 8 PC this morning and couldn't get iTunes to recognize my iPhone 4s or iPad 3.  (Oddly, it did recognize my ancient iPod Nano, however.)
I finally found this article, and it turned out my Apple Mobile Device USB Driver needed updating.  Check this out and see if it helps:

  • Moved ITunes folder to external drive now can't get Ipod to sync

I have moved my ITunes folder from laptop to external drive. Had to move each album folder individually to ITunes and when I went to Sync my Ipod, says its in Restore mode and can't get out of it as it stays in Restore mode over and over and over.

As a best practice, you should move your content to an external drive and import references to into iTunes rather than moving the whole database and app files. In iTunes > Preferences > Advanced, uncheck "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library". This will keep all your music and movies on the external drive, but iTunes and all references to the content on your desktop.
I know that's not what you wanted to hear as a fix, but this is how I have my MacBook Air setup and it works fine with the iPad. My son tried to move the whole app and database to a hard drive and we had endless problems with it.

  • Moved iTunes Library to external drive- now can't move iPad purchase to Mac

I moved my iTunes Library to an external drive because I didn't have enough internal HD space to move a movie purchased on the iPad to my Mac. Now iTunes won't sync my iPad - and wants to reformat it - because it says it was formatted on another Mac.
I've tried Aiseesoft iPad Manager but the movie - a iTunes+ movie, so I assume it is a package of some sort - doesn't show up in the movie pane.
This is a really crappy position to be put into. If I could re-download the movie I'd just reformat my iPad and be down with it. Unfortunately, this is not an option.
    Help!

  • Downloaded itunes 10.5.2. update, now itunes won't open!

I updated my itunes yesterday, after the process was complete my itunes will not open the only message I get is a Windows message that says
"A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
Then another window pops up that suggests I download the newest version of itunes from the Apple website.  I do that, I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it from the Apple website, I followed all the problem solutions from the website...nothing.  I've uninstalled itunes, bonjur, apple software update, apple application support, apple mobile device support and restarted...nothing.  I tried downloading my Windows updates, tried running a virus scan and updating my Mcafee security software...NOTHING IS WORKING.  The last thing I tried was the Microsoft Fix It Center, it said there is no problem with the installation of my itunes...
    Somebody help please!!!

  • Moved iTunes music folder to HDD, Now iTunes Can't Find it--Help :-)

I finally was able to get an HDD that actually mounted and now I have moved my iTunes music folder based on the instructions here: iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder. I printed them out and followed them step-by-step.
Before moving the folder iTunes Music from my internal HD (~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music) to the trash, I played random tracks with no problem. So I moved the folder to the trashcan, then emptied the trash as instructed. Went back to iTunes to play some music, and now all of my tracks have the dreaded exclamation point in the first column. When I click on a track to play it, I get the message "The song 'blah blah blah' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
Of course, I can select 'Yes' and go through the steps and locate the files on my HDD. This, however, is not an optimal process with over 2400 songs. Does anyone know what went wrong with my relocation?

    PowerBook G4 PowerPC   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iPod 30G, MyBook 250GB HDD, iTunes 7.1.1

I've used that method to transfer music from one drive to another literally dozens of times and never seen it fail in the way you experienced. I'm at a loss to explain how you could have followed the instructions, successfully transfer the music to the new drive, and yet have the iTunes database still think the music should be on the original drive.
What I can suggest are two solutions: One for it you don't care about keeping your playlists, rankings, and playcounts intact. The other for if you do care.
Fast fix but loses the meta data: Quit iTunes. Open your home directory, find the music folder and open it. Trash everything you see in your music folder and restart iTunes. All your music and playlists will be gone. Open your new drive on the desktop, find the folder with your music, and drag it into your iTunes window. Your music will be imported into a new iTunes catalog and then you can create your playlists.
Keeping the metadata: After quitting iTunes, move the music back to its original location by dragging the music folder(s). Unmount the new drive and play some music. Remember the songs you clicked on and showed iTunes how to find? Do those songs all over again and once you've verified the iTunes library now points to all the songs properly, delete the songs from the new drive and repeat the steps to move them again.

  • Installed itunes on ext. hard drive, now I cant import a cd???

I just installed itunes on my external hard drive (connects to my laptop via USB). Now, when I put a CD into my laptop - nothing happens. It does not appear under the source list. If I choose import, then find the disc it shows tracs and will allow me to import one by one but does not attach album info or song names!
    Any ideas????
    Thanks

  • Files moved to external hardrive now iTunes library is empty

I moved iTunes to an external hard drive, but when I go to use iTunes the library is blank. I still have the library on the new drive, how do I get it to appear back on iTunes. My iPod has not been docked so the library in on the iPod as well. Please help.

    Did you put back
    i both
the music files and the original 'iTunes Library.itl' file to their expected spots?
If the music files are returned without the correct ITL file, you'll end up with a blank Library. If the ITL file is in place without the music files, you'll end up having song references within iTunes with the '!' symbol.
My guess is that you need to find the 'iTunes Library.itl' file that was used when the music was on the C: drive. Did you make any copies of this (before or during your move attempt) or do you have any backup copies of this file? It will need to be placed in the 'My Music\iTunes' folder, replacing the current one that is there.
If the only ITL file you have is the current 'blank' one, you may have lost some music information (playlists, last played, playcount, date added). We can get the music back into the Library with the remainder of the meta-data.
