IMac 1.9GHz PowerPC G5 processor upgrade?

I have the last generation iMac prior to the Intel versions. Is there a way for me to upgrade my machine to an Intel processor? I really can't afford a whole new Mac at this time.

Hello, I didn't see any particular posts specifically pertaining to the slot loading iMac (Graphite)..I hope someone can help me out.
I have a G3 Graphite iMac, upgraded RAM currently running Tiger. I used to use it but wiped it clean, re-installied the OS and created a separate account for my 8y/o son, so essentially there aren't many apps on there. For some reason it's running slower than it should, even with just Safari open. Is there a fix or possibly a processor upgrade for this model (I keep seeing that there isn't, but I want to be sure).
It's either that or constantly hearing my son complain of the lagtime and ask for our laptops instead...

According to Mactracker at one point there was a 700 MHz model available in Graphite & Snow. If you could find a 700 MHz G3 CRT iMac logic board on eBay it might be possible to upgrade the processor speed. You could also install a Matshita SR-8184 or SR-8186 DVD-ROM drive.
There's firmware available for both drives that allow them to be flashed to RPC1 or region free meaning they can play DVDs from any region in the world. Normally the drive is restricted to being able to only play Region 3 DVDs from the US. If you order a Matshita SR-8184CD optical drive from www.welovemacs.com call their 800 number listed on their website & be sure to ask for Jessica or Faith since some of the optical drives they sell don't have RPC1 firmware available for them.

Retail Leopard disc looks like this;
(The disc itself has the same logo). If the one you've got is grey it simply won't work.
Given the retail and second hand prices of Leopard (usually some on Amazon MP), you'll probably find it cheaper to go directly to Snow Leopard, although there could be software updates and printer driver problems that could nullify the difference.

Thanks. Indeed, I had to buy with i7 in the first place.
The reason I bought one with i5 was that several people told me that there were no real difference except a small difference in speed (which was OK with me), as i5 was also multicore. What I found was that even if I run just one very CPU (and, might be i/o extensive) job I do feel some (very small but irritating) delays in responce of other programs, even emacs. I do not have this problem with my MacAir, which has the same memory, but i7. In fact Air also has solid state disk which iMac does not, could this be a problem?

You can't upgrade to any faster, & especially not to an Intel CPU needed to run Lion/10.7 for full iCloud usage.
You can have limited use of iCloud the way it is, you can view all of iCloud in a Browser, You can use Find my Phone I hear, & you can use IMAP Mail for syncing, but no other syncing.

If it's a Core Duo Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.

My Dual 1.25 is just as fast as the iMac G5 1.8 it replaced.
Your MacBook beats all of these machines, it is a Dual-Core processor, and it's a newer chip that beats any PPC except the Dual G5's.

If your machine meets the specs, the latest is Yosemite; make sure you check all the requirements as your machine falls right at the back end of being supported - meaning that it will not run at its maximum speed due to an older processor. You'd also need an absolute minimum opf 4 GB RAM - 8 would be much better.

Until I installed the SMC FanControl application my screen would "break up" into strange patterns and then would eventually freeze. Please help.

If you are trying to upgrade using a gray-faced OS X disk from another system, that won't work, as those disks are locked to the system types they are delivered with. You'll need to drop the $29 on a retail copy of Snow Leopard, which is available from the Apple online store. Note Snow Leopard requires 1GB minimum, and you may want at least 2GB for better performance.

i have had a single 1ghz mdd firewire 800 for about a year. i had great plans for this machine but it is basically a print server for my g4 imac in the living room. recently i purchased a 400 mhz sawtooth to replace the mdd. Is downgrading from a mdd a good idea? i plan on selling one of the powermacs. if i decide to upgrade again which is easier/cheaper to upgrade? there are a lot more processor upgrades for g4 models earlier than the mdd and i am not sure why. i purchased the mdd for around $400. i purchased the sawtooth for $10.

My HP LJ5MP worked with the PhoneNet/EtherMac connection to its AppleTalk port back when I just used the old 10BaseT hub for my LAN and internet connection (before modern router and switches). However, the new switch technology doesn't recognize the EtherMac output, which is the AppleTalk input. I found that when I put the hub in between the EtherMac and the new switch, the switch recognized the hub, which recognized the EtherMac and everything worked on my LAN. With this setup, both my Mac and my PC notebook on my LAN could see and use the HP LJ5MP.
Alternatively, I later bought a D-Link parallel port print server for the HP LJ. It works quite well on my LAN and is a little bit faster than the AppleTalk/EtherMac/hub setup. I currently have both connections to the HP LJ 5MP hooked to my LAN. I do it for redundancy, as the two different connections function independently of each other, so if there is a problem with one, the other usually works. This is important to me as the HP LJ is my primary printer for all my computers.

VRAM or Video Random Access Memory is dedicated RAM that the computer's video card uses.
Your model iMac came pre installed with either a 128 MB or 256 MB VRAM card or GPU chip.
I do not believe that in any of the aluminun iMac models have an upgradeable/replaceable GPU.
The exceptions might be the later 27 inch screen aluminum iMacs from 2009-2011. Replacing/upgrading the GPU in these models is not a DIY project for a newbie or novice Mac user and is a very tedious and challenging upgrade for an experienced Mac user/upgrader.
iMacs were never designed for the end user to work on or have easy access to work on.There are lots a different size fasteners and many tiny, finnincky, fiddly cables and connections to be careful with. My opinion, the later Intel iMacs were never design for easy accessibility and ease of repair or replacement work by the end Mac user.
My opinion, I think the newer style iMacs are designed to be this way. To design the internal components in a way that dissuades the user from even wanting to attempt trying to work on one of these iMacs.
My opinion again, The only iMac I ever thought was one of the easier iMac models to work on was the lamp-style, snowball base iMac G4 models. Compared to later iMac designs, I thought these were a piece of cake to work with.
Anyway, the answer is No. The graphics can't be upgraded.

It would be lovely to know what your talking about. Upgrading from Snow Leopard does not involve discs.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
