IMac 10.5.8 - No application for opening downloaded books?

I have a problem specifically opening and transferring books to my Kindle. No problem exists with Amazon e/book site, but most others seem to be a problem. Book items are 'downloaded' but when taking the next step to open/transfer to Kindle there is quote  "no available application to open it". Does any one have any idea as to how I may solve this issue?  My iMac is pretty old and I do not seem to get software updates as before - which may be part of the problem?
Thank you.
Lance

Your iMac isn't that old, but it is not running the latest versions of OS X.
I believe there is a KIndle Reader app for OS X, but you need OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard to be able to both access the Mac App Store to download the app and, also, to install and run the Kindle Book app.
You first need to purchase and install OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Also, it wouldn't hurt to increase the RAM in your iMac.
Your year and model iMac can take 8 GBs of RAM.
Intel versions of OS X tend to need a working minimum of 4 GBs of RAM.
If you can, strongly advise installing the full 8 GBs of RAM.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
Once OS X 10.6 is installled , you will need to use OS X Software Update function in OS X's System Prefernces Panel to update to OS X to OS X 10.6.8. This will give your iMac access to the Mac App Store.
If you wish, your iMac year and model can be updated, once , again, for another $20 U.S.D., to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion OR your can directly update for FREE to OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
Here's the link to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion
Before embarking on a OS X system upgrade, it would be very prudent to back up all of your important, personal data, beforehand.
You can choose just to backup the most important data by either burning data to CDs/DVDs, or copying data to large capacity USB flash drives.
The two better methods is to purchase a good quality external hard drive and backup the data and OS using OS X's Time Machine app to back your data up to an externally connected hard drive.
The other method is to backup your entire system and data using data cloning apps such as Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to clone an exact copy of your iMac's internal hard drive to the externally connected hard drive.   Cloning data to an external drive will give that drive the ability to boot from in an emergency. Your Mac will be able to be booted and run off of an external drive.
The type of connection of an external hard drive is yours to choose. The two types of data transfer connections your Mac can use are USB 2.0 or FireWire 400/800.
If you want a hard drive that has a faster, continuous throughput of data and the possibilty of running your iMac from an external hard drive (in the event your Mac's internal hard drive fails or data becomes corrupt and your Mac system won't boot to the Mac's internal drive) opt for a FireWire drive. If none of this is important to you, then get a hard drive that uses a USB 2.0 connection, instead.
Good Luck!

  • Mail default applications for opening attachments

I recently had to install Open Office in order to be able to open those kinds of documents produced by my colleagues. The only problem is that it now becomes the default application for opening .doc, .xls and .pps documents. I have changed this using command+i on each type and making sure I selected the "change all" so that each app opens under it's appropriate iWork program, but I still have a problem with Mail.
In Mail, if I get a .doc attachment, clicking on it automatically launches Open Office. Worse, when I right-click and choose "open with", Open Office is listed twice at the top of the list!
I loathe Open Office with a passion, not least because of this situation, but also because it frequently crashes and is still bound to using xterm. Nevertheless, I have to keep it as my colleagues are all on Ubuntu Linux and insist on using it for spreadsheets (to be honest, Open Office is okay on Linux).
If only iWork apps could open OpenOffice documents... ah well.
Any solutions would be most welcome!

Here's how you can set your preference for which application to use on a given file type:
    1. select a file of that type
    2. press CMD-I to bring up the file information
    3. Click on the little triangle to expand the "Open With" section
    4. Select the application you want to use for that type of file
    5. Click on the "Change All" button
This has worked for me in the case where I have Parallels Desktop installed and it wants to use my Office 2000 installation under Parallels to open MS Word & Excel attachments. I changed these to be opened by NeoOffice, and it works both from the finder and when opening attachments in Mail.
    I hope this helps...

  • Default application for opening a docx attachment

Help! I'm unable to open a received attachment. it is a docx file. My computer tells me that there isn't a default application to open this file. Can anyone give me a step by step to set up a default???

    Welcome to the forums!
The default application for that file is Microsoft Word 2008.
Mac users using Word 2004 who receive a Word 2008 for Mac, (or Word 2007 for Windows) document, will not be albe to read this without having the Open XML Converter installed, which can be downloaded from Microsoft.
    Go to this page:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx
and click on the right under Most Popular, 'Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.0'
This opens a window at the bottom of the page. Scroll that to the bottom and click on English.dmg, and it will download for you as a disk image, which can be installed in the usual way.
After installation you can open and read .xml formatted Word 2008 documents in Word 2004.

  • Problems opening downloaded books

Whenever I download a book that I purchased from B and N I get this message, "Document is licensed for different user account."  I can't open the book, find on my Nook or anything.  What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?

Digital Editions does not yet support reading books purchased from Barnes & Noble.  To read the books on your computer, you best bet will bet download the B&N software.
As for it not appearing on you Nook, if your Nook is registered to your B&N account, then all purchased books should be in your My Library on your Nook.

  • How to open downloadable books using Overdrive?

    Hi,
(If this is not the most appropriate forum, would someone redirect me?)
The public library offers a great service in downloadable books. They are readable using Overdrive (extension .odm)
However, I cannot open them on my Mac. Here is what Apple has to say when I try to open my book:
Is there something I am missing? Or another way to do this? Surely Apple isn't blocking library books!

  • IMac G5 screen dies and applications freeze/open Finder instead

I'm posting this on behalf of a friend who has an iMac PowerPC G5 and is currently trying to reset her SMU.
Evidently about four days ago, her computer abruptly started suffering weird periods where her screen goes kind of halfway dark, into a semi-translucent sort of state. She then stops being able to type...sort of...for instance, in AIM, she can hit enter to send a half-written message but she can't add any more to it...and though she can move around a little bit on the screen, doing things like selecting open programs instead brings up their location in the Finder Applications window.
I'm trying to help her figure out how to fix it but can't find anything like this anywhere on the internet; does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? I had her reset the SMU because it sort of sounded like her computer was trying to go to sleep and wasn't sure how to go about it; I kind of doubt this is the real source of the problem though.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Rosalind and welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Did you direct your friend to the knowledge base article:

  • How to change application for opening an online program?

I am trying to open an online program for which I have previously downloaded a plug-in required to open and utilize this online application, however, my computer must be set to a default to open the program with ScriptEditor, which is not compatible for running this online program I need to use. Does anyone know how I can change these settings to open the program with my downloaded plug-in versus the ScriptEditor? Any help would be appreciated.

If it’s actually an online program, it’d run in your web browser instead of being downloaded to your computer.
If you downloaded a Windows program file, it can’t be run outside of Windows, CrossOver Mac, or Wine.

Pls help to install free application in ipad2

You can only get apps for the iPad either via the App Store app on your iPad, or via the iTunes App Store on your computer - you cannot get apps for the iPad from any other source. Try looking in either of those for free apps.

  • How can I get rid of the vuzit application for pdf downloads and, instead, use Acrobat?

When I try to access a document that is in pdf, I always end up having to wait for the vuzit nitro pdf reader. I usually end up switching to Safari or Chrome to avoid waiting and trying to use this program which seems to serve no useful purpose.
How can I switch the preference to Adobe Acrobat? I have tried using the Firefox preferences for this with no luck.

I have eventually uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it.
I lost all bookmarks and passwords, but I have not (yet?) heard of VUZIT again.

  • Can iMac be used as a monitor for a Mac Book

My old boss used a white iMac, but my new boss got a MacBook because she works out of the office quite a bit.
But of course the MacBook has a much smaller display.
Is there anyway to connect that big white monitor to her MacBook?

Maybe someone else has a definitive answer, but as far as I know the white iMacs did not have that capability - only the newer models do. You might want to look up the specs on the white iMac on the Apple support pages and that should tell you what ports it had.

  • Application for file download

    Hi!
I am really a beginner in this technology and recently i am working on a project where i have to let the users to download files that are stored in a specified location in the server. Please suggest a way by which this can be accomplished.
Sorry in advance if this is not worth enough to post.
    Thanks
    Sutirtha

Simplest approach would be provide a hyperlink in your HTML/JSP page and provide the file URL in HREF attribute of anchor tag. When user clicks on that link, browser will automatically display download dialog to user.
    Example: DownLoad Test File

Regular  buyer of Ebooks from Ebooks.com. Downloaded with success until I changed to Windows 8.  Just bought some books, tried todownload to my computer in order to pass them on to my Sony Reader.  But .... message received says
"Adobe Reader cannot openURL Link (2) acsm, as the type of file is not taken in charge OR the file is damaged (it was sent as an attachment and was not decoded correctly, for example)"  This has not happened before I changed to Windows 8, and I would really love to download the books I've just purchqsed. • Cannot open downloaded Book, DRM error System:7 Code:31

I already re-set my firewalls to allow cookies & pop ups
    Still not working
    I'm on Windows XP
Any ideas, it won't let me read ebooks
    thanks

Well, System 7 code 31 for sure means the HTTP headers from the activation server either aren't getting sent from your machine, or aren't getting received from the server (there isn't any way to tell just from the error message)
Is there more to the error message? They're supposed to have four parts:
    System: 7
    State: ?
    Class: ?
    Code: 31
Message: (usually for this error it'll be 'error on request')

  • Preferences for Open Application With is not working (although preferences are saved/appearing. Thoughts?

Although the preferences for using certain applications to open downloaded files is set and saved (it still appears when accessed), the preferences are either not utilized automatically (for most files) or remembered at all for others (docx files). So, each time I try to download/open a docx file, I have to "browse" and tell firefox to use microsoft word, even though the preference is already set. I see that some people are having trouble with preferences being deleted, but that is not that case here. Thanks!
