IMac 12,1 Lion hangs on shutdown

We have recently brought a number of iMacs (12,1) and i have created a lion (10.7.5) image, but we are having a problem where they keep hanging on shutdown, everything appears to shut down but the mac doesn't power off it just sits on a white screen.

Thank you for your response, i haven't been able to replicate the fault again on the mid 2011 iMacs but i have had the problem on a number of mid 2007 iMacs. Please find attached log.

    Dear DS Store,
Thanks for the response.  (Is this what you mean in your step by step tutorial by giving credit?)
I should also preface my run-through of your tips by noting that my wife's Macbook air will shut down properly and get past the "unmount of /net failure" business without problems if I do not run iTunes (current version 10.6.1).  I can run Microsoft Office, Chrome, Mail etc no problem without triggering this problem.  In these circumstances I've been able to see that the next messages that SHOULD show up after the "unmount of /net failed (45)" are:
    done
    MACH Reboot
    wlEvent EN0 EN0 Link DOWN
(These lines blink by so quickly that I couldn't read them, I had to freeze frame a video I made of a proper shutdown sequence).
However, when I run iTunes, I ALWAYS get this failure where it freezes after the "unmount of /net failure (45) line" and is never able to shut down properly.
This problem occurs with both local accounts as well as with mobile users syncing to my portable home directory server.  (Even with a local account with nothing in the iTunes library).
I should also note that before I got your response to my question, I had already undertaken to reinstall OS X (with full software update done immediately after), and still was encountering the same problems after.
    Regarding your steps:
Step #1 SMC reset - Done, did not change outcome - still hung at shutdown
Step #2 PRAM reset - Done, still hangs at shutdown
Step #3 Startup manager - not done as I have no problem with getting into the boot volume
Step #4 - Repair disk - DIsk repaired using Lion recovery HD, no errors found, did not change outcome
Step #5 - reset home directory permissions and ACLs - done for all local accounts, portable home directory accounts, root - still hanging at precisely the same point
Step #6 - hardware test not done, problem seems to be software/OS related.  (going to run extended tests overnight)
Step #7,8 - did not seem pertinent to this situation, as it is possible to boot into all accounts no problem.
Step #9 - all data backed up on Time Machine, and also synced to server
Step #10 - software updated done
Step #11 - permissions repaired - still problematic
Step #12 - Onyx cache cleaning - plists check out fine, cleaned out all caches (except system logs), did all the maintenance tabs (did pretty well everything I could see as options) - problem still persists.  (I had hoped that cleaning kernel and dyld caches might do the trick, but no).
Step #13 - Deleted ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.whatever and anything.plist (3 files altogether) - same problem.  (There did not appear to be any other corrupt plists that needed deletion)
Step #14 - Activity monitor - no runaway processes.  mdworker busy, but due to spotlight caches being purged in step 12. System Diagnostic log shows nothing.
Step #15 - there isn't any third party software on my wife's macbook air that isn't running on my own macbook air and macbook pro (both of which are not facing this problem).  I tried to uninstall and reinstall iTunes prior to getting your advice (this is a PITA, by the way!!!!), and had ended up with 10.6.0 installed (since the downloadable installer from Apple at the moment isn't the latest 10.6.1 version), and software update not recognizing the need to update, which is when I went ahead and reinstalled OSX. This did not clear the problem.
Step #16 - created a brand spanking new account called test.  Problem continues to occur with the new account.
At this moment am wanting some feedback on what you think sofar of the problem before I go ahead and do something more destructive or tedious.
I should note that I do not seem to be able to find any reference to the problem in the system.log or kernel.log files in Console.  When I look through kernel.log there is nothing logged around the time the failure to shut down occurs, and in system.log, the last logged item is usually 1-2 seconds before I get the stream of other stuff that occurs as shown in the screenshot above, which includes a statement to the effect of "Userspace shutdown finished at [timestamp here]" etc etc....  I do not know if this other stuff is logged elsewhere, or not at all, as I have never seen this stuff in the logs in console.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Os x lion hangs during shutdown

System hangs showing white screen with status wheel.  I have to power cycle the box to get it going again.  I just upgraded to Lion before this occured.

I had the same rpoblem since installing 10.7 - and 10.7.1 fixed nothing.
i rang Applecare but the guy seemed unconcerned (i had other more pressing Wifi Problems he did solve by getting rid of my Airport network and building a new one)..
So I deliberately quit all apps and shutdown hard, then examined the console on restart (I had previously repaired permissions, zapped the PRAM and reset the SMC anyway for the Wifi issue....so it should have been a clean system.
Lo and behold, I found a reference in the console log to an SD card I had left plugged into my iMac.
So I ejected the SD card, and did a restart to test...and Hey presto- it worked like magic!
I hoep this helps you guys.
Now for the remaining mystery - rearranged desktop icons on startup...i.e. some but not all, and not always....Apple should be doing this debugging not me!

  • Lion 10.7 shutdown hangs

Is anyone else having shutdown problems with Lion. My IMac looks like its going to shutdown correctly but then just hangs. The ony way to shut it down is to press the power key until it switches off. I have tried closing down all apps before shutdown, but it seem to make no difference.

While I understand the frustration of things not working properly, you seem to be grasping at straws in trying to aportion blame.
    NextCoves wrote:
The Apple guy I spoke to said that there is no fix in Lion 10.7.3 for the OS not shutting down properly.
On the contrary. If it were known that there was a bug in 10.7.3 after it was released, the fix is to upgrade to 10.7.4.
    NextCoves wrote:
it's somewhat typical of Apple to blame the user rather than admit the product has a fault, as much as I like their stuff.
You have yourself said the problem was with the disk. So it's a hardware fault, not a software fault. Why would they say the software has a problem when the issue is to do with hardware?
TBH, if it's not a hardware fault, its a software conflict with something you've intstalled. I did beta testing of Lion 10.7.1 and 10.7.2 (admittedly not .3) and all these kinds of issues boiled down to conflicts with third party vendor s/w, probably in your login items, launchagents or launchdaemons folders.

  • New iMac hangs on shutdown

Hello, maybe someone know what could be with my iMac 21.5-inch: 3.06GHz Intel Core i3,(OS X 10.6.6) Everything was working fine for about a couple weeks, but now it hangs at shut down. I left for a bit thinking it would eventually shut down, but came back an hour later to find it still spinning on the grey screen,I left during the night, but nothing has changed still spinning on the grey screen. The only way to shut it down was to hold the power button.
and another problem is when it is sleep mode, it automatically turns on for 10 seconds and switches off,and so several times a day.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I have this problem and tried everything here but it still does it. It's ok if I boot in safe mode but any user account (new or old) and it hangs when shutting down, My iMac is only a month old.

Trying to download OSX Lion from AppStore on my iMac but it just hangs everytime and does not download

I downloaded Lion on my 17" Macbook Pro and it took about 17 hours. At first I thought it wan't downloading so I cancelled. The next day I tried again and let it ride for the duration; If the status bar is showing that it is downloading (the bar at the bottom will show some blue after about an hour), then be patient. It will download. The installation takes roughly 30 minutes.

Lion 10.7.2 On both mac book pro and iMac, both with Lion 10.7.2, obtain repeated iCal event notifications from calendar or address book.  Cannot turn these off.  They repeat several times per session and every time computer is used.  How to diagnose this?

First, uninstall "SuperTV" (whatever that is) according to the developer's instructions. It isn't working and it's filling the log with noise.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
PLEASE DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Mail "unexpectedly quits" after migration from snow leopard to new iMac running Mountain Lion

Mail "unexpectedly quits" after migration from snow leopard time machine files to new iMac running Mountain Lion.  I can run connection doctor OK.  But the activity window is blank.   If you try to open message viewer window then mail program crashes.  Would really like to get my old emails back as the old imac is totally dead.  Thanks for any help.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Why is my macbook pro hanging on shutdown?

    Hi,
For the last few weeks my MBP has been hanging at shutdown or restart on the gray screen with the grey loading wheel. I tried leaving it on this stage for a day with an outcome of it still hanging.
I read a thread on apple support that mentioned the same problem with a solution of uninstalling kaspersky anit virus which i had quite recently installed myself but after uninstalling the problem ceased for just one  shutdown cycle.
Additionally, I am able to shutdown or restart at the login screen and I have tried shutting down with the "reopen windows when logging back in" box both checked and unchecked and with windows open or closed of multiple programs.
The list of programs currently installed are: Parellels Desktop (with windows 7 proffesional with every default installed windows program), memorex expressit label design studio for windows (the only non default windows program installed on my computer), Adobe CS5.5 Master Collection, Microsoft Office 2011 for mac os, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, the Messages beta, Vuze, Tuneup, iBooks author, HP photosmart printer (and extensions), Adobe AIR and flash, and every default program that comes pre-installed on the late 2011 macbook pro. Every one of these programs is fully updated.
    Please Help:)

Boot into the Lion Recovery disk (command-r) and select Disk Utility. Then run Repair Disk.

  • Can the launchd-shutdown.log tell why a Mac is hanging at shutdown?

    Hi,
I was wondering if the launchd-shutdown.log can tell a developer the reason a Mac is hanging at shutdown. I hva bee having an itermittent hanged shutdown issue since installing Mac OS X Lion and there is no indicator on why this is happening.
Thanks for your time and assistance!

    twtwtw wrote:
maybe.  open it up and match the string 'exited', and look for strings that say 'Exited x.xxxxxx seconds after the first signal was sent'.
You might also check the hangreporter logs, though you'll need to be in an admin account for that.
    Thanks for the response.
I found something interesting, there are some strings that says the followning:
Exited while shutdown in progress. Processes remaining: 40/1
      120061
What does the entry above mean?
Most of the shutdown log says the "Exited x.xxxxxx seconds after the first signal was sent" string.
I have another question are those strings related to the process that could be hanging the computer?
I will take another look later tonight.

  • IMac won't boot, hangs on white logo screen and wheel stops spinning

I have a 4 year old 24" iMac - 4GB RAM, Lion 10.7.3 - that froze up in the middle of opening a PDF file in preview.  I powered it off by holding in the button only to discover it will not restart.  It gets as far as the white screen with the Apple logo and the "spinning" circle of lines and the this stops spinning after about 15 seconds and it will not do anything else.
    I have tried:
    resetting the SMC
    resetting the PRAM
    Booting:
    with only keyboard plugged in
    in safe mode
from USB (Lion) Recovery thumb drive
    from MBP in target mode
    from Time Machine backup
from Leopard and Snow Leopard DVD's
In all cases with the boot the HDD is shown along with the other drive(s) connected and I can select these other drives but the result is always the same.  In safe mode it just hangs after going through everything.
As the iMac isn't under warranty I decided to swap the HDD out with a 1TB working one from my old (deceased) Time Capsule.  I know this drive still works.  Still the same problem though.  Whilst the imac was apart I checked the onboard CR2032 battery was OK and for any obvious board problems.  Nothing.
I haven't been able to find anything that relates to not being able to boot of an external drive from searching the web and I now conceed this is most likely a board level failure.  I haven't lost anything as I backup routinely.  My intention was to upgrade when the next model iMac comes along, just wish it ends up being very soon as my MBP is not great for editing photo's.
If I could get the iMac limping it would help whilst I wait for the next generation iMac, so if anyone can help it would be appreciated.

  • How to connect my perfectly-working 20-year-old Apple Personal Laserwriter 320 to my iMac running Mountain Lion?

How to connect my perfectly-working 20-year-old Apple Personal Laserwriter 320 to my iMac running Mountain Lion?
              Thank you, Morty S.

I have a perfectly-working LW 4/600 with exactly the same issue. They use localtalk - a long obsolete network connection, that doesn't connect to modern networks, and appletalk as the comm protocol.
I think the only choice you have is to use an old powerPC Mac as print server. You tell me which old Mac you have, with a localtalk connector, or that runs OS X 10.4 or earlier (so it speaks appletalk), and I'll tell you how I've done it for the past 11 years or so.
Right now I use a G4 running 10.4.11, plus an etherMac ethernet to localtalk adapter.
Before, I used a PMac 6100 running LPD server software.

I am using a new imac with osx lion 10.7.5 and have just bought Apple iLife 11 on dvd so that I can install iWeb and iDVD, as macs no longer ship with these apps. When I click on install iLife I get a message saying "iLife.kpg was signed with an invalid certificate.
Next problem is that when moving through the installer and get to custom install, as I only want to install iDVD and iWeb, I am presented with the option to install iDVD, Sounds & Jingles and iWeb, but not sure what is going on with the other 3 options iLife Support etc, they seem to be greyed out but still look like they may install over the top of the newer versions already on my imac. Is it ok for me to just go ahead and hit install? Or do I have a problem?

Yep, just install iDVD (plus sounds and jingles) and iWeb if you want it (but note that iWeb apparently won't work if you upgrade to Mountain Lion).
Then use Software Update to get any late iDVD updates.

  • Shared drives no longer network accessible on iMac running Mountain Lion.

    Hey all,
I've been searching the community on and off for weeks and have not been able to come to a solution.  I have an external hard drive connected to a 2007 iMac running Mountain Lion that has successfully been shared on my network for over two years starting with Snow Leopard.  Just recently I noticed the shared drives were no longer showing up on my networked Macs (running anything from Leopard to Mountain Lion).  What's odd is the shared drives will connect and show up for the first 5 minutes or so after the iMac is restarted, but will go offline soon after.  The iMac shows up in the side bar, but I get the dreaded "Connection Failed" message in Finder when I click "Connect As" after the shared drives first go away.  Screen sharing works fine all the time when accessing the iMac.  I've tried everything on the iMac from disabling the firewall completely to renaming it on the network to disabling SMB on all shared partitions.  Anyone have any suggestions?

What version of OS X are you installing on the external drive? Is the drive partitioned GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled?

  • How to find out the info regarding Solaris, server hang or shutdown.

    Hi
As I am handling the Solaris 9 Server remotely.
As in last week the server has stopped to respond suddenly, we have tried to ping, ssh which was not working. As ultimately we have asked the Data Centre Team to hard reboot the same, to resolve the issue.
In the same ref I would like to know how we come to know the reason, what caused to reboot the same, i.e . any log file, etc..
I have check /var/adm/messages, but not found any detail for the same.
    Thanks

    No core files?
    No hope for an answer.
As you learned in the other Internet forum.
    http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/solaris-opensolaris-20/how-to-find-out-the-info-regarding-solaris-server-hang-or-shutdown.-621500/
    To get such corefiles analyzed,
you would need to use your service contract and log a support case with Sun.
They have the special software tools to do that.
