IMac 1TB Seagate Issues (on iMacs outside of recall)

Hello, has anyone else had issues with their iMac that came with the 1TB Seagate, but their serial number is not covered under the recall program?  My iMac, which is 1 and a half months outside the warranty period has a failing Seagate drive, but my local Apple store insists there there are not any problems with the 1TB Seagate drives that shipped in my iMac model (27 inch 2.8 GHz i7), which I find hard to believe.  Has anyone heard of Apple expanding their coverage of the 1TB Seagate recall?
Thanks,
Brandon J.

Yes also, I have a late 2009 model 27" and noticed last week that my Seagate 1TB ST31000528ASQ hard drive status is failing.  Here are the steps I have taken to this point.  First I started looking at the support discussions and took notice of all the problems with this hard drive....... Second I did not purchase the Apple Care Plan because I thought I was purchasing a product that would not have problems such as this, what a mistake..  So I called two Apple Authorized service providers here in Florida first one told me I would need to bring my machine in and they would look at it and charge me $50.00 to give me a price for installation of a new hard drive, second one I called told me that they were now being recertified by apple and couldn't work on any products until certification complete but he did tell me should cost about $200.00.  So then went to the local apple store to visit a genius because they won't give you a price on the phone.... their cost  $266.14.  I asked for the breakdown and was advised 40.00 labor and 226.14 for the hard drive.  I said are you kidding you can get a 3TB for that cost?  So end result.... Have ordered a Seagate Barracuda 1TB hard drive for $110.00 and will get a fan utility to make sure the fan operates like it should.   Everyone is asking the same question over and over again.......Why isn't Apple covering all these bad hard drives.   I have only had my Imac since 12/2010.  This is a prime example of being exploited as far as I am concerned.   Propriety firmware to operate the fan so causes bunch of other junk to deal with and the purchase of a new hard drive after 20 mos?   I have a sour taste in my mouth from the apple right now..........  Will be installing the hard drive ourselves with the help of ifixit.  Kinda sounds funny !  Guess I'm just ranting, however the apple genius guy said we can't cover everyones hard drive "they can go out anytime"   So why are all these people posting the same exact model of Seagate?

  • Replacing my iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive

I have to replace my iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive. I need to use Time Machine to restore my Mac- anyone have a step by step procedure to complete this?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you get your Mac after Apple has replaced its hard disk, they can give it to you with a blank hard disk or with Lion installed. I recommend you to make a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner instead of the Time Machine backup. It will make shorter the process of reinstalling everything again.
If it has got Lion installed:
    1. Press Command and R keys while your Mac is starting and open Disk Utility.
    2. Select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and go to Restore tab.
    3. Drag your external disk to Destination box and press Restore.
    4. When the restore finishes, restart your Mac.
If the hard disk is blank, it depends if you bought your Mac with Snow Leopard or Lion. If you bought it with Lion, do the same but pressing Command, Option and R keys. If you bought it with Snow Leopard:
    1. Insert the OS X disc and press C key when your Mac starts.
    2. Go to Utilities > Disk Utility and select Macintosh HD in the sidebar.
    3. Go to Restore tab, drag the external disk to Destination box and press Restore

As Babowa says, get an external disk.  You should have one for normal backups anyway.
Actually, I'm a strong fan of having multiple backups.  3 copies including the original, 2 different backup formats, and 1 backup off-site.
And when you have your iMac in for service, if you have just 1 backup at that point in time you have just 1 copy of your data.  I get paranoid about my data.
But if you are just making 1 backup, I would use SuperDuper (free for a full clone, and extremely good software, as is Carbon Copy Cloner, but it is not free anymore).
And then I would "Boot" from the clone, to make sure it was a good clone.
Booted from the clone, I would then use Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility to zero the original disk, as suggested by Babowa, so that when they replace the disk, the original disk containing your data is not in the hands of strangers.  A single pass of zeros is more than good enough as an erase, as the chances are no one is going to spend the money needed to try and read the erased data.  It is not like you have any super secret data, just stuff you do not want the casual data theif to get.  You will find the zeroing options under Disk Utility -> Erase -> Security Options
Just make sure you actually boot from your clone before erasing your original.  And if you are paranoid like me, make 2 backups, then erase the original :-)

  • IMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program - how long does it take?

I started a new thread for this issue since the original thread has degenerated into a rant. I just got my love letter from Apple informing me that my new 27" iMac has the bad drive. I backup to an external USB drive using Time Machine, and I am planning to have my nearest Apple store replace the drive sometime in the next few weeks.
I am posting to ask if anyone has yet contacted Apple about this issue? I am curious how long it takes to swap the drives. Can it be done while you wait? Does Apple have any ability to clone the old drive's data to the new? Has anyone been able to arrange for in-home service as mentioned in the original thread?
Please don't use this new thread to rant about the problem. If you need to let off steam, please post to the original thread.
    Thanks for the help!

Greetings from an apple mac newbie in UK. On the one hand, after getting the email today I was disappointed to find my brand new shiny mac 21.5 might have a fault on hard drive, on the other at least apple points it out! But doubly frustrating for someone that has just taken the plunge and converted from pc/microsoft rubbish after two decades and still finding my feet in macworld....and who upgraded to OS X lion this past weekend without a hitch (nervous as an XP SP2/SP3 veteran)...and had to pay for Lion because I bought my imac just a week to early to qualify for free Lion upgrade.
My decision on Hard drive is to wait and see, firstly to guage experience of apple turn around times/customer experience etc in UK and secondly because I would like to understand what kind of percentage of the seagate drives are faulty...I am backing up with time machine, the machine is under warranty and applecare too, so maybe no need to rush, there's a year yet at least.
Another consideration for me is that I bought my mac with dual drives -  the 1TB Harddrive for data and the 256SSD for OSX/apps...idea was to keep the programs on the ssd as it is fastest and is best with less rewrites, the conventional hard drive then used for big data stuff like docs, music and photos. This needed a bit of custom set up involving apple support to get the right things on the right drives, so am in no hurry to muck that up!
PS does anyone else in the UK have my mac dual drive  configuration...?

  • 2008 24" iMac screen freeze issue?  Is there a recall?

Hello, I have a late 2008 24" imac 2.8ghz ati 2600 running mavericks, sometimes i get solid colors or rainbow paterns or other digital artifacts that freeze and require a hard boot. Is this a recall issue?  there seems to be many with this problem, no kext work, Clean installed downgrading OS, pram flashing or any other solution seems to work, it doesnt seem related to heat and happens seemingly at random whether iunder load or not.  It's done this since I got it but I was stationed overseas and nothing could be done at the time, of course now I'm a full time student on a fixed GI stipend and can't replace my computer.  If so many people have this issue, and it appears to be hardware/manufacture related, why can I find nothing about a recall?

  • IMac 1TB Replacement Program

I just got an email from Apple stating my iMac qualifies for the iMac 1TB Seagate HD Relacement Program. Oh boy, aren't I lucky   I have Time Machine and a CCC bootable clone backup. Is it as simple as cloning back my System onto the new hard drive. The Apple email says I need to start from scratch with the Install DVD that came with the computer. What's the best proceedure.

As far as I know, Nvidia makes graphics cards, not hard drives. Are you sure you checked here:
@ abrody - They usually do not restore or backup your data - but that shouldn't be necessary; most people do have bootable clones or TM backups (or they should).
I've restored a clone to an internal; if an OS is installed on the new one, simply use TM to restore or, upon first setup, use Setup Assistant. I will most likely simply boot from my external clone, wipe the new internal drive, and clone my system back. That would be my preferred method.
I also received an email; I will call Apple to ask if it can be done in house since I have Applecare and in home service is included. If I have to take in the machine, I don't know that I would trust them with my SL install disks - I'd need to talk to them about it because I don't feel comfortable giving my disks to a repair place.
For anyone: remember to wipe the disk before it is replaced; you have no idea where that disk will go and who will have access to it......
Edit: I see you posted your HD info and it does say Nvidia - that is strange, especially since your hard drive also starts with ST which is Seagate.

  • IMac 1TB drive replacement program: notifications sent in error (don't panic)

An hour ago I received a note like this:
    Dear Apple Customer,
    Product Serial Number(s): XXXXXX
    Case ID: 11111
    Follow Up Number: 1111
Thank you for submitting a refund request. We need a repair receipt and banking details to complete your refund.
Please contact the service center that replaced your hard drive and obtain a receipt, if you do not already have it.
Reply to this email and attach a scan of the receipt. Do not change the subject line.
This made me unhappy, as I thought I'd completed the refund request process for my defective drive two weeks ago.
I wrote a snarky blog post, posted a question here that was removed for violating posting rules (guilty), and replied to the email with a complaint. Then I received this note:
    Dear Apple Customer,
The prior communication you received from Apple stating the need for additional information was in error.
We completed your refund for a hard drive replacement as part of the iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program.
    Refund Amount: 281.25
    Credit Memo Number: 111111
    Case ID: 11111
    Follow Up Number: 111111
You will receive your refund in four-to-six weeks.
So the original notice was a mistake. I assume I'm not the only person who got it. If you got the notice, and haven't received a correction, try replying and ask if it was sent in error.

    Thanks for the report!

I am experiencing the same issue with a new external DVD burner, a Sony DRX-840U. When I load a CD into this external drive it appears in iTunes but when you go to import or play the CD iTunes indicates playing or importing for each individual track for just a moment. The end result is that nothing is ever imported or played. I am experiencing this on two different systems. One a notebook running Win2K and the other a desktop running XPpro. If I use the internal DVD drives on either of these systems everything work just fine. Yet I am able to use this new external DVD drive with every other application. For example Window Media Player has no problem playing or importing the same CD that iTunes fails on. The last person indicated that if one set the DVD drive in question to be the drive of choice under preferences>advanced>burning that all was ok. I my case this Sony external drive is the drive listed as the drive of choice for burning yet the issue still exists.
As this appears to be an issue that others are also experiencing help from Apple Tech Support would be greatly appreciated.

  • I have an iMac 21.5 inch purchased in 2011 with a failing 1TB Seagate hard drive. Can I get a replacement hard drive?

I have an iMac 21.5 inch purchased in 2011 with a failing 1TB Seagate hard drive. Can I get a replacement hard drive thru the Apple Replacement Program? I did purchase the Applecare Plan but it expired in Dec. 2013.

FWIW, if you purchased the iMac in 2011 and purchased Applecare, you are covered for a total of 3 years. You mentioned yours expired in December 2013 - that cannot be unless you bought yours in 2010. If you bought it in December 2011, you should still be covered until December 2014 - if so, contact Apple/make a Genius Bar appointment quickly so the replacement is covered by the warranty. The hard drive replacement program might have expired, but as long as you're covered by Applecare, a drive replacement is covered.

  • Disk Utility Partition Issue- 1Tb Seagate External

    Hi All-
I recently received a 1Tb Seagate external hard drive connecting via a Firewire 400 cable. Problem is, it won't let me reformat the thing as a single, continuous partition map. 2 is a problem as well: it only lets me format it if one side of the partition is MS-DOS and the other is OSX Journaled. if both as OSX, then Disk Utility once again fails to partition the drive. Is there some lurking cap on hard drive capacity that the MBP can understand?
    Thanks.

I bought recently the Seagate FreeAgent Desk 500 Gb drive (the USB only Windows preformatted model since this one was 150$ cheaper than the made-for-Mac model with FW ports). I had the same problem as you ("one side of the partition is MS-DOS and the other is OSX Journaled"). My friend on an iBook G3 PPC running Panther bought the same model and didn't experience such problems (and was able to upgrade easily from 10.3.9 to 10.4.11 after her initial system backup).
However, I was able to reformat my Seagate drive with Disk Utility and use Time Machine afterwards to backup my entire MacBook Pro but since Disk Utility was showing MS-DOS (FAT) as a volume format for the main external drive, I was worried about future backup problems.
Then I read this recent news on MacFixIt ( http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20090111225651243 ) about this particular issue since the 10.5.6 update and possibly 10.5.5. I followed the instructions (as explained originally in this thread ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8700407& ) and reformatted my USB external drive and everything went smoothly and as it should be. The GUID option did it for me.
Hope it does it for you.

    2. Can not actived the AirPlay Mirroring on iMac. The AirPlay button is no response when I try to select the "Mirroring"

  • I hear a lot of disk I/O from my iMac 1TB drive.  How can I see apps may be running in background?  Time Machine is not running.

I hear a lot of disk I/O from my iMac 1TB drive.  How can I see apps may be running in background?  Time Machine is not running.

If you wnat to see the applications that are running, open the Activity Monitor application (it's in /Applications/Utilities). After opening it, select "All Processes" above "Show" in the toolbar, and you will see all the processes that are running.
I/O errors often happen on a damaged hard drive. If you are receiving that error, you should make a backup with Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner as soon as possible and take your Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get another hard disk.
If the warranty is void, you can try installing it yourself, but note that there are some iMacs which are very difficult to have the hard drive replaced. Search the steps in iFixit > http://www.ifixit.com

  • Are there any known compatibility issues with iMac and Google Chrome?

Does anyone know of any compatibility issues with iMac and Google chrome. A Facebook friend who is a photographer posted recently that Chrome had ruined his iMac. He stead that it ran an update on itself that made safari and chrome unusable - slow running overall. In the end he had to reinstall his OS.
Is anyone aware of this and should I un-install Chrome off my Mac?
    Thanks,
    S.

There is nothing official but your post will attract a variety of personal experiences.   I once loaded Chrome and found myself with the dreaded MacKeeper malware, loads of pop ups and conflicts with my system.   Part of the problem is the huge range of add ons you are tempted to  take on, many of which are not as strictly tested as Apple extensions.   I would say, unless you have a specific reason, leave it alone.   The best browser is Firefox and for Macs, Safari is OK.
