Computer refuses to boot with both chips installed 4 GB.
Computer will boot and recognize 3 GB..( Apple 1 GB + 2 GB GEIL)
Both Geil Chips will boot, when paired with the Apple 1 GB chip.
machine recognizes 3 GB ram.
Please advise...

Ensure the computer's RAM is fully seated down, and then try resetting the PRAM by holding down options-command-P-R at boot. The computer will make the boot chimes and then reset and chime again. When it chimes the second time release the keys and let the thing boot normally. Hopefully that will let it recognize the RAM.

Yes it will.. I would recommend you use the combination of Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and LPv9.1.5 (or 9.1.8 if you have to..) with that particular hardware to get the best performance out of it... I would not recommend running any OS X version higher than 10.6.8 as each new version of OS X from then onwards.. placed a bigger performance hit on the hardware... and frankly, less stability with LP9.
As to how well it will run on that hardware.. will more depend on the sort of loads you place on it.. depending on the type and content of the music you wish to compose... It will run and you should be able to create reasonable sized projects.. but again, it all depends on the plugins used.. the number of them... the number of tracks and so on... so to give a more precise answer is difficult.

IMac G3 Rev.A refuses to boot from an OS 9 installation CD.

My iMac has first got Mac OS 9.0 on it.
Then I just swapped in a new HD and installed Jaguar.
After that I realised that I need OS 9 to run in classic mode, so I put in my OS 9.0.4 CD and booted it holding down the C key. Doesn't work. Tried selecting the startup disk. No use.
I really need OS 9 for my iMac, please help me.
*note: My Performa 6320 managed to boot it, but found a "system error occered".

Is the CD white with a big orange "9" on it, or is it a grey system disk from another model of computer.? If the latter, the disk may not be compatible with a 1gen iMac, especially if it is for a much later model. The white disks are universal retail install versions that will install on any supported Mac model.

Why is my iMac (2.8.GHz Intel Core i7 w/ 4GBs RAM) using so much RAM?

Right now I have only Firefox open with 4 tabs. Firefox only has 1 extension (1Password). No other application open or running (that I know of). My dock has 17 icons (including basics like trash, finder, launch, etc). As mentioned I have a:

I'm trying to figure out why my iMac is using so much RAM when I only have Firefox open? are any of these activities unnecessary and if so how might I turn them off and so they don't start automatically when I initially turn on the computer? This imac is two weeks old and so I haven't done a whole lot of customization yet. Please help if you can. Really appreciate it. Trying to optimize this baby. Thank you!!

By the way the number of icons in your Dock has essentially no effect on memory. Only running apps - the ones with the little dot indicator - might be occupying memory. Even that is somewhat of an oversimplification, since "active" apps may or may not have any active processes associated with them. It's all a function of how Lion manages its memory resources, and that is a whole new world to most of us.
With Lion, Apple is seeking to eliminate the system effects of whether an app is even open or not. Just another trivial detail the average user ought not to be concerned with, in their opinion.
If you want a cursory introduction to that fascinating subject, Google the Ars Technica Lion review that was written a few months ago. It may ease your concerns about memory management. If you are an experienced computer user, it will rock your world.

RAM ISSUES A215-S7407 - PSAFGU-01V002 SUSPEND MODE ERROR WITH 4GB RAM

Hi, im having some troubles with my laptop.
Because it comes only winth 1GB RAM (512MB x 2) i decided to give it an upgrade to 4GB (Max Capcity) according to specifications details on the support site. So i bought two (2) DIMM Modules KINGSTON 2GB 667MHZ, exact model # KVR667D2S5/2G Everything was working fine until i close the lid and it suspend.
Normally, when i open the lid, it will wake up, and everything will work fine, BUT NOW when it wakes up i have distorted sound and horizontal lines on screen, and sometimes i get a BSOD (BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH) and it restart itself.
TEST THAT I MADE:
ONLY 1 DIMM of 2GB - IT SUSPEND AND WAKES UP NORMALLY (I tested both Dimms 2GB separately)
1 DIMM 2GB / 1 DIMM 1GB (TOTAL 3GB) - IT SUSPEND AND WAKES UP NORMALLY
2 DIMMs 2GB (TOTAL 4GB) - IT SUSPEND AND WAKES UP WITH DISTORTED SOUND AND HORIZONTAL LINES ON DISPLAY.
It seems like the problem appears only with Max. Capacity (4GB) RAM and only when it suspend CLOSE THE LID (POWER LED CHANGE COLOR BLUE TO ORANGE AND FADES AND COMES).
With Hibernation, it works fine, the problem is when it suspend.
It looks that the problem is on the motherboard, maybe a NEW BIOS RELEASE that fix the situation.
I appreciate if somebody can speak to TOSHIBA SUPPORT DEVELOPER and ask them for an BIOS Update.
i know that im not the only one with this problem, there is another person that wrote a post "RAM ISSUES" and refers to the same situation, but as i guess, it wasn't solved at all.

Make sure you install the memory when the light is not flashing, i.e. completly off not sleeping.

Please Help iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram? It was fine 4 days ago and had been working with a 1gb stick in one slot and a 2gb stick, which had replaced the orignal 1gb stick that I got it with, in the other and it had shown 3gb of ram and was working just fine with that since November? It went to sleep briefly 4 days ago while I was waiting on a customer and I came back to try to wake it up and it never would forcing me to hard boot it. When I did that it would only go to a black screen with a solid white light on the power indicator. Over and over again and same thing. I read and tried every suggestion I could possibly find in this and a few other mac forums to no avail.
I finally after reading about RAM issues etc. I decided to power off and take out the ram sticks and try them one at a time in each slot. So I took out the 2gb stick and did the SMC reset and it would boot up and work just fine with the 1 gb of ram. So then I went through the same process with the 2gb stick and it would not boot up only go to a black screen with white solid light again (NOT flashing). So then I tried the other original 1gb I had replaced with the 2gb and it worked just find like the other 1gb. So then I tried just 1gb stick in the other ram slot (back facing one) and with just the 1gb strip it booted up and worked fine. Tried it with the other 1gb stick and once again that one too worked just fine. So I determined it wasn't the slot itself I thought? I then tried the 2gb in the back slot and it would not boot only go to the black screen white solid light deal like before. So I thought well ok it's obviously the 2gb ram must have somehow went bad (even though I have only had it since November) and I thought well I will just use the (2) 1gb sticks in each slot and then that will at least give me 2gb because only 1gb really ***** LOL. So I proceeded to go through the same shut down process installed both sticks (I always push them to I feel them click and my fingers have a nice indention on them) reset the SMC and turned the power one and.... It would only go to the black screen with white solid light on power indicator???? I went through the same above process at least 3 times and again today a few times and I can't figure it out and I tried to search and search and I couldn't find anything like what I am experiencing.....What happened? Please help this slow Imac is killing me. It will work with 1gb ram only nothing more? Here are the specifics of my Imac.
It is a 20" Late 2006 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 ATI Radeon X1600 256 MB graphics card and Ram with now only 1gb (did have 3gb) and I am running OSX Lion 10.7.5

The Memtest just completed and came back like this? It only test the single 1gb chip because anything more in this computer it won't go past the black screen with solid white power light.

IMac refuses to boot properly - hardware problem?

Hi all, I'm having some problems with my iMac (purchased last October) and was hoping some kind soul could shed some light.
Here's where I'm at now.
- The iMac doesn't boot. When I press the power button, it chimes, but then nothing happens and I just see the white/grey screen.
- I have disconnected all 3rd party peripherals, and only have original keyboard and mouse attached.
- No matter what keyboard combo I try, nothing happens either. I managed to eject the disc once by pressing the mouse button, but no other key combos work.
- I must have rebooted about 30 times now, and only twice did something happen:
1. Once it sat on the white screen for a bit, and then displayed a grey folder with a questionmark in it, but then nothing else happened.
1. Once I did get it to boot from the CD, and I got to the installation screen. At this stage I tried a couple of different things. First I tried Disk Utility, and the HD is indeed listed in the sidebar (although it's listed as 'disk0s2' rather than 'Macintosh HD'. When I picked the First Aid tab, both Repaid Disk Permissions and Verify Disk Permissions are greyed out (i.e. I can't press them). When I went to press Repair, I got the following error message.

So, I could do nothing in Disk Utility. I then thought "well, I'll just surrender then and reinstall OS X", but when I went back to the Install screen and proceeded, and it asked me where to install the OS, there was nothing to choose from. Usually 'Macintosh HD' is listed along with any other disks. Not this time. So, I shut down the computer again, and now I can't back to the screen (i.e. it refuses to boot from the CD again and instead just spits out the disc).
So then I phoned Apple. But because I don't have their service plan (and the free one only lasts 90 days after purchase), he couldn't help much. He did say though that if it spits out the disc, it could be hardware problem, and my warranty would cover it.
So, should I just give up, realise my HD is screwed and my data is gone, and hand it in for service? Or can anyone here shed some more light on my situation?
Even a "yes, you're screwed, hand it in" would suffice, if that's indeed where I am.

And I have been backing up, but I just got back from vacation, so my last backup is 2 weeks old and the things I was worried about saving was the work I did on my vacation photos and video. Also, you'd be kicking a girl when she's down, which would be even worse.
I think I'll definitely hand it in now, and ask the tech to rescue whatever data he can. I don't care if it costs me a bit, if it means rescuing my vacation photos.

Brian - The batteries are fine and there has only every been one keyboard paired with it. We have tried my MacPro keyboard as well, and it will not even recognise that there is a discoverable keyboard nearby.

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, and see if that fixes it. BTW. detailed computer and OS info goes a long way to solving problems.

IMac G4 OS 10.5.8 booting issues, blue screen

I'm trying to remotely help my mom to solve a big problem with her iMac G4 (2007 vintage.) It's running Mac OS 10.5.8. Everything was fine until a couple of weeks ago when it started refusing to boot. It starts to boot, you get the Apple and then it continues on to the blue screen, and never progresses from there.
It WILL safe boot, and I've tried all the things I can think of... disabled login items, reset PRAM, used Disk Utility to check the HDD and repair permissions. But it won't boot in normal (non-safe) mode.
So I decided the only solution would be to archive and install Leopard again. I figured the hardware was mostly likely okay, since it would safe boot. She couldn't find her Leopard install disks so I sent her mine.
But the system won't successfully start up from the install DVD. It does read from the DVD and starts the boot process, but again it hangs at the blue screen and does not continue beyond that.
I am not sure what to try next... I suppose it's possible that there some bad RAM or something which isn't accessed during the more limited safe boot but is used during a regular boot and causes the hang. It seems like the HDD is probably okay since it consistently safe boots without a problem. What else can I try?

The test as run from the original install-restore disc #1 should be accessible
when booted per instructions on the label. Usually, there's the method on how
to use the Installer (C key on boot) and also the other is there, on how to use
the same DVD to boot the Apple Hardware Test (perhaps Opt key.)
With an older computer, there is the chance the hard disk drive may be fading;
due to use and age factors. However, one could still (maybe) find information
on what else may be going on, IF the error and crash logs in the Console utility
could be accessed, then read through, by someone with technical knowledge.
The Console logs may be accessed if the computer can be started in SafeBoot.
And there are several, in there; some would not apply. Also, they're rather cryptic.
Sometimes, a section of a hard disk drive where the boot information is stored
could be damaged; or the Directory may be corrupted, so a third-party disk
utility on its own DVD or bootable volume can be helpful to correct that aspect.
Or to totally erase, zero, partition map and reformat the hard disk drive may do
to attempt to restore function of the computer to normal; while wiping user content.
A backup of content could be made; even a clone copy to an external, then that
could be transferred (via another clone, using Carbon Copy Cloner, etc) and if
the computer were wiped, that bootable clone could be moved back. Or, should
the internal drive be bad, the content of the computer can be put into a new HDD.
{The 'pizza box' iMac with the G5 PPC processor, had a few known issues in
certain models, some due to heat and other component failures; so the hard-
ware test may be helpful. So would an inspection of the power & logic circuits.}

IMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart

Just bought a brand new 27" iMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) which shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart (ie completely dead).
In order to restart, I have to unplug the power cord from the computer, hold power key down for 10secs, replug in and it then starts up. I returned to the store and they spent a couple days letting it go to sleep etc and overnight and for them it was fine. Woke up no problems. They returned it to me yesterday.
So I set it all up again, left it overnight and this morning it was dead again. So now it leaves me to wonder if it's something I have plugged into it.
I have a new Seagate 3TB external hard drive hooked up using USB3.0. This is plugged directly into the back of the computer.
I also have a powered USB hub plugged into the computer which has regular USB stuff such as printer, graphics tablet and another external hard drive (this one is older LaCie 500gb, and have put it into a new USB 3.0 case as well for the arrival of the new iMac (this had an old firewire hard drive case). However this hard drive is switched off at the case and is not being used.
I believe it could possibly be the Seagate 3TB disk causing this problem, but it works fine during the day while I am using the computer, it's just when I either leave it at lunch time to go to a meeting or walk etc or overnight that I come back and it has shut down....leaving me to believe that it's due to the computer going to sleep.
Has anyone else had a similar problem with a Seagate drive? Today I'm conducting an experiment and heading off for lunch with both hard drives unhooked. If I come back and the computer wakes up from a click of the mouse or keyboard as it should, I will plug in one hard drive at a time and re-test. I will leave the Seagate for last, as I don't think it is the old LaCie disk (which is off).
For reference sake, I also have a NAS running off my network through Airport Extreme etc and have my old iMac hooked up to the network too, but don't believe this is the problem.
Initially I did put in some after market RAM (another 8GB) and though that might be the problem, but I removed and it still reacted the same way (plus store I bought it from again booted up fine and woke up fine at their shop after I had taken RAM out too).
Will keep this post updated with my next test (letting computer sleep without either hard drive in), but keen to hear if anyone has had any similar experiences with Seagate disks/cases and the new iMacs.

I had a similar problem shortly after I bought my 27" iMac. Here is an excerpt from my discussion:
"As BDAqua suggested, I started the process of elimination by shutting down the externals and just leaving up one of the USB drives and using the computer until time to shut it off. After eliminating 2 of the 3 drives I figured it had to be the last one. That drive is a Seagate GoFlex Desk version that allows different bases with differing connectivity. I had previously used FW800 to connect but had switched to USB3 on the new computer. I went ahead and got a Thunderbolt to FW adaptor cable and switched this drive back to Firewire rather than USB3. So far so good."
For some reason the Seagate I was using didn't agree with the USB3 on the Mac.
