IMac 2.4GHz w/4 Gig of Ram now running SLOW.

iMac 2.4GHz w/4 Gig of Ram now running SLOW. Activity Monitor shows all RAM is being used except for 300 MB. How can I tell if I have things running in the background I don't need?

I know about the Dock showing what applications are open, but when I look at the Activity Monitor, I see numerous things running (maybe 40-50) that don't show in the Dock.
I've got a 350 Gig HD with 170 Gig available.

MacBook Pro late 2008 edition with 2 Gigs of RAM and running Mavericks (10.9.5). It gives me an error message when I try to download Yosemite

    All,
I thought it may be related to spaces in the path in which the script was called from. I tried having the ODBC command script in another directory but the same thing happens. It will give me the "CONFIGSYSDSN: Unable to create a data source for the 'Oracle in OraClient10g_home1' driver: Could not load the setup or translator library with error code -2147467259". As soon as the script is done running I can manually double click the script and it adds the DSN fine.

  • Upgraded to 1 gig of ram now programs load slow

Hey, i just upgraded to 1 gig of ram, and now some programs like outlook express take a long time to load compaired with the 512 megs of ram i was running before.  Can anyone suggest why this would be happening?

    Quoting from the Memtest86 readme
    14) Known Problems
    ==================
Sometimes when booting from a floppy disk the following messages scroll up
    on the screen:
            X:8000
            AX:0212
            BX:8600
            CX:0201
            DX:0000
This the BIOS reporting floppy disk read errors.  Either re-write or toss
    the floppy disk.
Memtest86 has no support for multiple CPUs.  Memtest86 should run
without problems, but it will only use one CPU.
Memtest86 can not diagnose many types of PC failures.  For example a
faulty CPU that causes Windows to crash will most likely just cause
Memtest86 to crash in the same way.
There have been numerous reports of errors in only tests 5 and 8 on Athlon
systems.  Often the memory works in a different system or the vendor insists
that it is good.  In these cases the memory is not necessarily bad but is
not able to operate reliably at Athlon speeds.  Sometimes more conservative
memory timings on the motherboard will correct these errors.  In other
cases the only option is to replace the memory with better quality, higher
speed memory.  Don't buy cheap memory and expect it to work with an Athlon!
Memtest86 supports all types of memory.  If fact the test has absolutely
no knowledge of the memory type nor does it need to.  This not a problem
or bug but is listed here due to the many questions I get about this issue.
Changes in the compiler and loader have caused problems with
Memtest86 resulting in both build failures and errors in execution.  A
binary image (precomp.bin) of the test is included and may be used if
    problems are encountered.

  • Early 2008 iMac 2.4Ghz. Ram Upgrade

Hi, I have Kingston KTA-MB667/2G (2x2Gb kit) that i used on my Macbook Pro. Anyhow got ride of MacBook Pro kept the ram. Just bought a Early 2008 iMac 2.4Ghz Refurb with 1Gb of Ram (PC-6400 - 800Mhz). I am wondering if my Macbook Pro ram will work in the iMac. I know the ram will probably run slower as i am installing 667Mhz on a system that can support 800Mhz, but i am running memory intensive apps (vista on parallels, etc...) thus want more ram. Rather use the ram i already have instead of spending 60$ on a new 800mhz kit (times are tough right?).

I know the ram will probably run slower as i am installing 667Mhz on a system that can support 800Mhz
Actually, the RAM will run at the speed designated by the logic board. So if you installed faster RAM, it would not run any faster. If you installed slower RAM, it probably will not work, because the logic board will try to run it at the specified faster speed.

  • IMac 2.4GHz - No startup sound, no fans spinning

    Hi !
I have a iMac 2.4 GHz with 4 GB RAM and running MacOs 10.5.8
A few weeks ago it suddenly went dead. When I try to startup again, no startup sound appears and no video (black). Suddenly again it startup with sound and video and worked about 30 sec then went dead again (?). I have worked earlier as technician so I opened the iMac and I saw that only 3 of 4 leds lit when I try to start it up. The 4:th led tells me: "LED 4 lights only if the computer detects an over-temperature condition. This LED will be OFF when the computer is turned on and running at the correct temperature".
Can someone help me with this. Anybody experienced the same problem ? Have tried to disconnect the internal HDD and tried change RAM.
    Regards
    Magnus

I have the same imac and have the same problem. I was playing a light-on-processor-usage windowed game, and suddenly the screen went black and the sounds stopped. I pressed keys and heard no activity in response from the computer, although it still was "on" as far as it had power to it, and i could hear the slight harddrive noise (still spinning, not read/write sounds). So i held the power button down to shut it off, then i pressed the power button to start back up, and no familiar startup tone, no video(screen stayed black, didn't even flicker). So i let the computer sit unplugged all night, then tried it in the morning. still same startup as the night before--woosh of the fans starting, the harddrive twitches, then it doesn't sound like anything happening in there, everything at idle. I'm out of warranty, (and consequently will never let any of my other macs go out of warranty again), and this *****. By chance any way you could explain to me where to look for these "LEDS" in the imac, i think i'll open it up to confirm that i have the same condition as the original poster. Such a weird problem... i'm so dissatisfied about this though... PLEASE HELP!

  • Does T61p Support 8 Gig of RAM?

Does the T61p support 8 gig of RAM for running Wndows 2008 64 bit operating systems? I've been told it does but the memory manufacturers (e.g. Crucial) states it supports 4 Gig max.
If it does support 8 Gig - does it have 2 memory slots (e.g. you can use two 4 Gig chips) or does it require a special 8 Gig chip? Where do I find such?
    Thanks much

I can remember when the T60 first came out, the only source for 2GB sticks was IBM parts sales. One guy I knew working was as a free lancer on a project with a load of IBMers, he was the only person who didn't have 3GB RAM. His high end T60p had cost him €3000 and a 2GB stick would have cost him €1030.  As you could buy them on the "open market" original Lenovo sticks had a price of €630, today they cost €100.
That's inside two years, wait a while, they'll get cheaper

Both Geil Chips will boot, when paired with the Apple 1 GB chip.
    machine recognizes 3 GB ram.
    Please advise...

Ensure the computer's RAM is fully seated down, and then try resetting the PRAM by holding down options-command-P-R at boot. The computer will make the boot chimes and then reset and chime again. When it chimes the second time release the keys and let the thing boot normally. Hopefully that will let it recognize the RAM.

  • Is upgrading my iMac G4 1.25Ghz to 2 Gigs of Ram possible?

I was researching cost when i came along this. just curious if anyone has done it, and if they had any problems along the way.

A warning for us lucky iLamp owners,
so that our wonderful machines last longer (and earn better reputation/resale value),
after exchanging Optical Drive, Hard Disk, or factory slot RAM:
This We Love Macs step-by-step TakeApart is helpful but lacks a very important step:
-- Removing the old thermal paste and applying new paste.
Rather, use this accelerate your mac excellent approach:
-- iMac G4 - Exchanging Optical Drive, Hard Disk, RAM
(Please read step 6 about Thermal Paste:
"Before putting the bottom housing to the rest you must remove the old thermal paste (red marked on photo) and apply new paste. Remember to first scrape off all of the old paste from the surfaces with a soft tool. Next, simply apply the paste evenly to the area highlighted on the photo, without getting any in vent hole itself. Remember, this is how your iMac keeps cool so be sure to do this carefully. (you do not need to go overboard with the thermal paste - it's just to fill in the surface imperfections in the mating surface - not build up a thick layer) (the heat goes through, so it doesn't spread all over fragile areas/components)"
Very curious and enthousiastic myself about installing 1.5GB or 2GB, not willing to spoil anything here. Just careful
    (Adam Coates):
"...I could argue that an Apple Service Provider installed [...] the 1GB in the factory slot..."
Indeed, you could, since they duly applied the new thermal paste.
    (sammyj18):
"...as long as you dont break anything doing it how would they ever know you opened the bottom up?"
If the thermal paste doesn't do its job anymore, they'll see all kinds of signs of overheating, drying etc in places that should not be affected, if not some bigger problem/damage.
Enjoy your G4 iMacs, the most beautiful computers ever made,
    and...
    ...keep them healthy!

  • What's eating a gig of RAM?

I have the new aluminum iMac with 4GB of RAM. On a fresh startup, I have about 3.39GB of ram. After a day or so, that will drop down to about 3.2, then 3.11, then 3, then under 3. Even when it is sitting there not being used, everytime I wake it up I always have less RAM, but what gets me is the fact that I only have 3.39 when I first bootup. Does leopard eat 700MB of RAM on startup? I have 4 login items I believe.

I have looked at activity monitor and don't see anything extrainious running, but I could be wrong. I have 2 widgets, iStatpro, and the default weather one. I also have an external hard drive always connected and turned on, but not using time-machine.
Just wondering where almost a gig of ram is going and if this is normal.

What does *Activity Monitor > System Memory* say?
If the "Wired" + "Active" segments aren't growing mysteriously, there's no
    reason for concern.
Be aware that "Inactive" memory is essentially the same as "Free" memory,
except that the OS happens to "know" what it contains -- so it need not
be re-fetched from disk if some app asks for it. As long as the memory
would otherwise be idle, it costs nothing to keep the the data handy --
but only until some process has a better use for the memory space.
For example, if I power-up my iMac and run an app that reads a 1GB file
from disk, it takes 15-20 seconds to fetch the data. However, if I close
the app, and then immediately re-run it, the second "read" of the same
data file takes less than half a second -- because the OS "remembered"
that the file contents were already in "inactive" memory.
OTOH, if I load/run a bunch of other apps that need that memory space,
the OS "forgets" the old data and allocates memory from the "inactive"
pool -- in exactly the same way that it would allocate "free" memory.

  • I have the 24" imac 2.4ghz can it support elements 11

i have the 24" imac 2.4ghz can it support elements 11??? i need to know soon

Yes, assuming your system meets the requirements for PSE 11.  At a minimum you need to be running OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and have at least 1GB RAM.  2GB would be a lot better.

  • Running the latest OS Mavericks.  8 gigs of RAM.  150 gigs free space on computer.  Problem: since upgrading to Maverick almost all applications are slow to open, and frequently many 'spinning ball' interruptions.  Repaired disk permissions - no help.

I'm running the latest OS 10.9.1 Mavericks (late 2009 iMac).  8 gigs of RAM.  150 gigs free space on computer.  Since upgrading to Mavericks, apps are slow to open, with frequent "spinning ball" interruptions.  Repaired Disk Permissions - no help.  Repaired disk - no problems indicated.  Did notice in going to Utilities/Console that there are 4000 messages over a 3 day period.  Any suggesstions how to correct this sudden slow down, other than psychiatric help?

Yes.  Many messages show up when I try to use Office for Mac 08.  Here's a sample (and one that repeats over and over again):
2/11/14 1:01:16.577 PM Microsoft Word[1912]: OTAtomicAdd32 is deprecated and will be removed soon.  Please stop using it.
Also getting many msgs when I use Chrome.

  • IMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart

Just bought a brand new 27" iMac (3.4gHz Intel Core i7) which shuts down when sleeps, then won't restart (ie completely dead).
In order to restart, I have to unplug the power cord from the computer, hold power key down for 10secs, replug in and it then starts up. I returned to the store and they spent a couple days letting it go to sleep etc and overnight and for them it was fine. Woke up no problems. They returned it to me yesterday.
So I set it all up again, left it overnight and this morning it was dead again. So now it leaves me to wonder if it's something I have plugged into it.
I have a new Seagate 3TB external hard drive hooked up using USB3.0. This is plugged directly into the back of the computer.
I also have a powered USB hub plugged into the computer which has regular USB stuff such as printer, graphics tablet and another external hard drive (this one is older LaCie 500gb, and have put it into a new USB 3.0 case as well for the arrival of the new iMac (this had an old firewire hard drive case). However this hard drive is switched off at the case and is not being used.
I believe it could possibly be the Seagate 3TB disk causing this problem, but it works fine during the day while I am using the computer, it's just when I either leave it at lunch time to go to a meeting or walk etc or overnight that I come back and it has shut down....leaving me to believe that it's due to the computer going to sleep.
Has anyone else had a similar problem with a Seagate drive? Today I'm conducting an experiment and heading off for lunch with both hard drives unhooked. If I come back and the computer wakes up from a click of the mouse or keyboard as it should, I will plug in one hard drive at a time and re-test. I will leave the Seagate for last, as I don't think it is the old LaCie disk (which is off).
For reference sake, I also have a NAS running off my network through Airport Extreme etc and have my old iMac hooked up to the network too, but don't believe this is the problem.
Initially I did put in some after market RAM (another 8GB) and though that might be the problem, but I removed and it still reacted the same way (plus store I bought it from again booted up fine and woke up fine at their shop after I had taken RAM out too).
Will keep this post updated with my next test (letting computer sleep without either hard drive in), but keen to hear if anyone has had any similar experiences with Seagate disks/cases and the new iMacs.
    Cheers,
    Kristin

    Hey kristinandmike,
I had a similar problem shortly after I bought my 27" iMac. Here is an excerpt from my discussion:
"As BDAqua suggested, I started the process of elimination by shutting down the externals and just leaving up one of the USB drives and using the computer until time to shut it off. After eliminating 2 of the 3 drives I figured it had to be the last one. That drive is a Seagate GoFlex Desk version that allows different bases with differing connectivity. I had previously used FW800 to connect but had switched to USB3 on the new computer. I went ahead and got a Thunderbolt to FW adaptor cable and switched this drive back to Firewire rather than USB3. So far so good."
For some reason the Seagate I was using didn't agree with the USB3 on the Mac.
