IMac 2.93GHz 1TB External Drive Errors

Hi,
I received my new 24", 2.93GHz, 1TB HDD, 4GB RAM, 512MB Nvidia iMac on Wednesday, and have had no end of problems when trying to copy files from external drives.
The three results of doing so are as follows:
1. I'm informed that I don't have sufficient privileges to copy the files
2. The files are partially copied, I'm informed that I don't have sufficient privileges to copy the files, the finder crashes, the copying procedure can't be stopped, and I have to relaunch the finder, whereupon the contents of the external drive can no longer be viewed, the drive can't be found, or the finder doesn't relaunch.
3. The Finder freezes and can't be relaunched, the computer has to be hard shutdown.
The last time this occurred, I restarted the computer and the startup disk couldn't be found, and I had to reinstall OSX.
Do I have a defective iMac, or is this a software issue?

Are you still logged in to the same account as you used with your old machine? The permissions on your hard drive will be tied to that old account, which could explain at least why it says you don't have the correct permissions, although quite why it then decides crashing is a good idea I'm not sure.
When you first started up your new iMac, you'll have set up a new user account. If you then used Migration Assistant, it will have copied everything across, but when you start the machine up it will still by default log you into the "new" account you set up. Go into the Users preference panel and you should see your old user account info there. If you set that as the default auto-login option, then restart, I'm betting you'll have access to your hard drive again.
Fire up Disk Utility and repair permissions on it afterwards as well, just to be safe.

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

Can my iMac boot from an external drive?

Once upon a time, I used Disk Utility, running from the DVD to make a copy of my iMac's internal drive. I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner to do the same thing. But, I have never been able to get the iMac to recognize the external drive as a boot drive. I just wanted to have a backup that would launch when the internal drive tanks... as it will, one day.

Yes. If you did it right then to boot from the clone:
Boot Using OPTION key:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
      "OPTION" key.
3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
4. Select the clone's disk icon.
5. Click the arrow button on the far right.
To make the clone:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
       it to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
      the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

Trouble formatting a 1TB external drive

I am unable to format or partition a 1TB external drive, connected by fire wire 400. My computer is a Power Mac G5 (not intel), 1.6 Ghz, and 1.25 RAM. I am running OS 10.5.6.
When I first plugged in the TB drive, its icon displayed on the desktop. Under Get Info, it was formatted Windows FAT 32. So I opened Disk Utility and attempted to erase and reformat the drive for Apple. I selected the disk drive icon in the left sidebar window of Disk Utility, clicked on Erase, and selected Mac OS Extended (journaled) and clicked to proceed. After a moment I got an error message that the formatter had failed. The help menu stated that this will happen when trying to format a disk larger than 500 GB. The instructions were to partition the disk, and then, presumably, format the partitions. The disk's icon will no longer show on my desktop, even after a restart. However it still showed in the Disk Utility left side window. So I selected it and clicked the Partition button. But all I get is a window that says this disk cannot be erased. All the partition buttons are grayed out. After trying a few times, the Partition button itself is grayed out and causes the spinning beach ball, and I have to force quit disk utility.
Any suggestions on how I can get this 1TB external disk formatted for Apple?

Sharing a WD Network 1TB External Drive

How do I setup a Network WD 1TB External Drive to work with Time Machine to backup an iMac and Powerbook?
I tried to setup the Powerbook and now my iMac is doing a full backup, which takes a very long time to complete.
Any help would be appreciated.

Is this one of their "network" drives (aka, a NAS device), or a regular external HD connected to the iMac or an Airport or ??, that you're backing-up to over a network, or ??

You say the iMac is doing a lengthy full backup; what is/has the Powerbook done?
How much data is on each Mac, and how big is the destination?

On Seagate 1TB external drive for W8.1 system image backup

System image attempt using W8.1 on a Seagate 1Tb external drive stalls and advises "Insufficient space" etc. I've tried expanding the volume, decreasing the volume, renaming the drive. What I've read on this site requires using non-Microsoft
programs to solve a Microsoft issue. As this is a W8.1 issue (no problems with backups in W7) surely you Microsoft experts out there can come up with a simple solution for computer illerates lilke I am.

Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.

My time Machine keeps saying, "Time Machine could not complete the backup. This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 345.74 GB but only 289.80 are available." I have already excluded files. I have a 1tb external drive. HELP!!!

For over two weeks now I have been frustated and not having my TIme Machine back up to my 1tb external drive. I dont understand why now its a problem. It keeps saying

I want to erase and "reformat" a 1TB external drive?

I want to erase and "reformat" a 1TB external drive to use it to back up my iphoto and itunes library. I don't want to use time machine. I have gone to utilities, disc utilities, erase. Then do I chose Mac OS Extended ( Journaled) or Mac OS Extended or any of the other choices?

You are on the right track. Choosing OSX extended is the best option if you only intend to use the Ext HD with your Mac. If you want to use it to share files with a Windoze PC then you should choose FAT32, but if you do you will have difficulties transferring larger files (over 3-4GB). Also, it is best not to partition the drive. It is unnecessary.

Upgrading my intel iMac to internal SSD and running 1TB external drive from firewire 800 for mass storage while still using a second external drive for backups...my goal-speed with a SSD, to still have 1TB of room for everything i have now..possible?

I seem to kill HD's every two years...the last two i've installed were WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200rpm 3.5" drives. The speed gains over stock drives have been remarkable. I don't blame the drives for the failures, my machines are up and running 16 hours a day, every day, year round. They die from 'mileage' so to speak...i assume...there's no viral acvtivity or questionable downloads to gunk things up...just lots of work.
I have my third new drive ready to install in my intel based iMac...but i've had a thought...I want to install a SSD in my iMac for the speed gain (and recent price drops)...for standard storage i want to use this new WD Caviar Black 1TB in an external drive bay and connect via firewire 800 for storing everything except the OS and my most commonly used software...am i crazy? will the firewire 800 external drive negate the speed gained with an internal SSD??
I have four iMacs in my office, and one at home. I buy second hand and install new drives and boost memory. I'm going to do this on my 'home' machine...if it works out well i want to upgrade the other three this way...but first i need to know if i'm just dreaming, or will it really make a difference? or even possible??

The SSD gives great bootup and Application launch speed. I think it also speeds up the video rendering a bit, I do all that on the SSD and then move the finished project to the external drives. As far as the speed for the external drives they are quick enough for viewing video and the file transfer rate is good. I had initially put the SSD into an external cradle (FW800) and the system was faster than on the internal drive. I only got a 1.5GBs SATA drive, perhaps yours could benefit from the 3GBs. I know the 6GBs would be too fast and costs a lot more, even the MacPros need special hookups to make use of the 6GBs.

Need Help Can't Format This disk. I have tried Formating with Disk Utility and It says it can't be unmounted.

Drive Partition and Format
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After Disk Utility loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

Unable to complete Time Machine backup to Iomega 1TB external drive

I've read through all the posted topics related to Time Machine failing. I've run Disk Utility without errors; ensured that the external drive is formatted correctly GUID; 1 partition; Mac OS Extended (Journaled); downloaded TimeMachineBuddy; and still cannot get my new Iomega 1TB hard drive to complete a backup. My prior external drive, a LaCie, had no such difficulties but is now full.

I attached a new drive last night. Time Machine prompted me that it needed reformatting, which it did internally, without going to Disk Utility. It then started a backup but hung on "cleaning up" where I found it this morning.
Again, the finder was taken out with the TM hang and I had to hard reboot (on/off button - restart doesn't work nor does force quitting finder).
Here is the sad log from last night's attempt. Since it mentions an entirely new set of failures I am now ready to point to my computer as the faulty party. $180 worth of external drives into this, I am reticent about sinking anymore money into this until I rule out the computer itself. This line "NSFileHandleOperationException:* -[NSConcreteFileHandle writeData:]: Input/output error"
seems to be the essential problem.

Migrating to a new iMac, Time Capsule and external drive involved.

The family has gotten a lot of use out of the good old 2.16 iMac Core 2 Duo but it was time to upgrade. So now we have a 27” 3.2 iMac, 2x 4Gb, 1Tb of storage to migrate to.
The mess is this...
There are 4 users on the old iMac.
The old iMac is full to the brim, no room left on the HDD.
Some time ago I hooked it up to a WD 500GB external drive and moved each users music to the WD. In addition I moved the iPhoto libraries to the WD too.
Now it’s time to migrate and I’m not sure where to start. I do know where I want to end up though.
I want to move all the information that is spread across the old iMac HDD and the WD external drive to the new iMac...consolidate it back. To back things up I have a new 3Tb Time Capsule which will also wirelessly back up a Macbook Pro and a Macbook Air. For additional back up I also have a 2Tb G Tech external drive.
My thoughts are these.
Use the G Tech as a temporary bridge. Partition the drive, and back up the iMac to one side and the WD external to the other.
Then migrate the old iMac to the new iMac.
Then from the G Tech move the iPhoto libraries and the iTunes to the new iMac.
Questions I have:
There is a back up of the old iMac on the WD external that may have important information not stored on the old iMac internal drive. Is there a way to merge the files and keep the newest information and dump the redundant?
How do I ensure that my iPhoto libraries don’t get messed up? It seems that when even installing updates that now and then some thumbnails disappear.
How do I partition the Time Capsule for multiple machines?
What is the best use for the G Tech? Storage of photos and music or redundant back up of the Time Capsule?
I’m sure my post will generate as many questions as answers so I’ll stop here and see what shakes out. Thanks in advance for the input and responses.

I'm ready to use Setup Assistant now but connectivity may be an issue. Pondini's recommends Firewire. The issue is I don't have a FW400-FW800 cable. USB is all I have that is common to all my devices. Is that even a consideration? Ethernet is an option between the two iMacs but Pondini seems to elude to Migration Assitant over Setup Assistant when using that connection. Am I confused on that issue?

Install Linux on a Imac 24 to an external drive

Hello everybody
I have an Imac 24 and I am trying to install linux and windows on an external USB hard drive.
Is that possible?
So far that I tried I think I messed it up with the boot loader where to install it.
Is anybody else facing the same problem?

Just FYI, as with any type of file or object, normally it should only take a single click to select it in any view (desktop, or Finder window list, icon, or column view).

It would require a ridiculous amount of discs. 1TB minus around 880GB of free space means it is currently using maybe 200GB or more. Backing up would take almost 300CDs or 43 DVDs. But the real cost would not be the discs, it would be the time to burn and then restore all those discs. And the discs would need to be burned cross-platform so that the Mac can read back the files. Also, since the drive is in NTFS format, it would be easiest to back it up using a Windows PC.
But here is another way to solve your problem. Instead of backing up and reformatting, you could download some add-on software to make your Mac read and write NTFS. (Apple does not include it due to licensing & fees & such, since NTFS is Microsoft proprietary.) If you install NTFS read/write software for the Mac, you can simply use the drive as is and not go through something complicated and time-consuming.
I am not well versed in using NTFS, but my understanding is that you can download software like Paragon NTFS (paid) to get this done. I have heard that there are free options but again, I don't know them very well.
