IMac 20-inch vs. 24-inch

Is there any difference between these two displays other than size?
I'm looking to buy an iMac to do some video editing, and I can't make up my mind. Any suggestions?

Having used both 20- and 24-inch monitors for video editing, (both with Premiere Pro, and the 20-inch with FCP), I would recommend getting the 24-inch model, because of the significantly larger screen real estate. While using the 20-inch monitor was decent, it felt cramped, with only a few video layers visible in the timeline when you're watching the video at 100% (SD video, not HD). On the 24-inch, everything was much more spacious, and I could easily utilize quite a few video and audio layers while watching the video real size.
Video takes up a LOT of hard drive space, so the larger the HD the better. Even so, I think that the larger screen (and better graphics card) should take piority above internal HD size, especially because of today's cheap external drives.
Based on this, I would recommend the 24-inch model, but be prepared to buy an external HD soon, especially if you do a lot of editing.
Cheers,
Ilya

  • What's the right memory module for an iMac G4 Flat panel 15-inch?

    Hello!
A new program I've recently bought requires me to expand my iMac's memory, which is currently 256 MB.
After searching the Apple Store web site, I think I've come to the conclusion that what I need is an Apple memory module called "512MB DDR266 SO-DIMM (PC2100), 200-pin". As I don't know any expert who can give me some advice, and as I'm no expert myself, could anyone please tell me if that's right?
    Thank you!
    iMac G4 Flat panel 15-inch   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Ciao e benvenuto alle discussioni di Apple.
There are actually 3 different types of user slot installable RAM for the iMac G4 models so you'll have to check what your processor speed is (Go to  Apple Menu > About this Mac > ):
    iMac G4 15" and 17" 700 or 800MHz, PC133 144pin SODIMM.
    iMac G4 17" 1GHz, PC2100 200pin SODIMM
    iMac G4 1GHz 15" or 1.25GHz 17"/20", PC2700 200pin SODIMM.
So although I can't tell you exactly what RAM you need I can tell you that if you have a 15" screen the PC2100 is wrong.
I'd advise using Crucial memory in Europe as the prices are amongst the best and they are Mac friendly. I wouldn't recommend Apple memory; it's overpriced. I also wouldn't advise buying a cheap brand as it could cause trouble.
    Here are the fitting instructions.

  • Apple has determined that certain Seagate 1TB hard drives used in 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac systems may fail.

    Hi
I got an e-mail stating that Apple has determined that certain Seagate 1TB hard drives used in 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac systems may fail, and that mine was one that may fail and to book an appointment with Genius to click here. So after making an appointment we then took out iMac to the shop affixing thirty minuets before appointment time and had to Waite until 12-45hrs. When we were told that we would have to leave the Mac with them for two to three days to replace the hard drive.
Can anyone advise, is this normal to make an appointment only to find that when you get to the Genius department  in the Apple shop they then say because of the amount of iMacs that have come in today it will take days to replace?

    Hi mende1
Thanks for replying but when anyone makes an appointment surely the work should be carried out then not to be told to come back days later especially when you have traveled over one hundred and fifty miles to get to the shops. It may have been a free replacement but the cost of petrol for the journey comes to more than one hundred euros.

  • HT1752 What are the latest versions of OS X (and OS X 10.4) that I can install on my iMac Power PC G4 (17-inch Flat Panel)?

    Hey guys,
I was just wondering as to what the latest versions of OS X (and OS X 10.4) that I can install on my iMac Power PC G4 (17-inch Flat Panel) are?
Any information would be much-appreciated, as ANYthing that would make this baby run a bit quicker (withOUT burning a massive hole in my pocket) would be a GREAT help!!! (;-D)

The highest version of the Mac OS that runs on PowerPC Macs is 10.5.8. The last iteration of OS 10.4 was 10.4.11.
As 10.5 has more overhead than 10.5, I doubt it will make any speed differences and may knock speed down a notch or two. It did on a G4 tower I have with specs similar to the last of the G4 iMacs.
    Things that help:
    1) Max out the RAM. If you post more details about your iMac from Apple menu > About this Mac > More Info... we can see how much more RAM you model can accomodate (different G4 iMacs have different RAM specs; with modern modules, some can double the max amount of RAM the outdated Appel Specs call out).
    2) See if the hard drive is getting too full. Although it varies with hard drive sides, for legacy Macs you want no less thant about 15 percent of the hard drive space free.
    3) In OS 10.4, run the periodic maintenance scripts manually. Link :Running the Mac OS X maintenance scripts
If it's web video that's slow, you can't fix that. Most web developers use modern video technology that has abandoned any efforts to be optimized for pre-Intel mac processors.

  • 20-inch or 24-inch display: which one?

I would like to hear from those who either have the 20-inch or 24-inch display.
    - Which one is better?
    - What would you recommend?
    - What are the pros and cons for each?
I am trying to decide before I buy, but I am stuck.
    Thank you so much!

You have to move your head pretty far off-center to experience the color shift. I've had the 20" 2.4ghz iMac since the day after it was released. I upgraded from a 17" three-year old iMac g5 and couldn't be happier. Especially with the extra $400 in my pocket. I like the screen. When it is correctly calibrated, the colors are crisper than the white iMacs. The glare isn't a problem either. I think a lot of people just like to complain about things. As for the scree: you still see millions of colors; it's just a differenc in the way the colors are generated.

  • 12 inch or 15 inch Powerbook?

Some general advice/guidance here would be much appreciated. Having sold some gadgets on ebay over the past 2 weeks I now have about £500 to spend and I want to get either a 12 inch or 15 inch Powerbook, mainly for taking out and about for email and browsing but hey who knows if I come to love it then it may well get used for more stuff. I just don't fancy a MacBook and although no doubt they are better and faster I don't want to spend the extra £200 or so on one...I just prefer the look of the aluminium PowerBooks.
Should I go for the 12 or 15 inch? Is there any point in paying slightly more for the larger size? Is it better made or better specced or a nicer user experience than the 12inch? The smaller size is obviously more portable but often there can be a trade off...any help advice gratefully received!!

You can compare the specifications of both at http://support.apple.com/specs/#powerbook
A few observations ... the screen on the 15" is a higher quality screen, if I remember correctly the 12" was shared with the iBook. The 15" model can have 2GB memory vs 1.25GB in the 12" model. Hard drives are typically larger in the 15" Powerbook. 15" Powerbook has the faster Firewire 800 port that the 12" model doesn't have. Both have Firewire 400 ports.
There have been recalls on Powerbooks, you may want to verify if the one you're interested in was fixed under a recall, and you check at http://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/powerbook.html. Also, if you're considering one with the extended Applecare warranty, the owner can transfer it to you for it's duration.

  • Macbook pro 13 inch or 15 inch?

Hello, Iv been looking at a Macbook Pro either 13 inch or 15 inch. I have a dell studio xps 15 inch right now and its about 4 years old and its time for a new laptop and iv decided to upgrade to an Apple. Iv been looking at the MBP 13 inch and 15 inch. im a student currently and i would mainly use it for papers, powerpoint, surfing the web, music, watch movies and videos, normal stuff. first off is there a big difference between the 2 13 inch models? i was looking at the more expensive one but is there a big difference between the i5 and i7? and also would it be better to get a 15 inch instead? i know they are heavier and bigger but iv had a 15 inch laptop before so not a huge deal. performance wise would it make sence to get the 15 over the 13 or would the nicer 13 inch do everything i need?
Thanks in advance for any and all answers.

while the 13 inch will do the job for you - the i5 or the i7, going with the 15 inch will be much better because it has a quad core i7 rather than a dual core i7 on the 13 Inch MB Pro.
the 15 inch also comes with a discrete graphics adapter that is faster than the built in graphics adapter on the 13 inch.
Or, you can get the baseline 13 Inch Macbook Pro with the i5 and upgrade the RAM to 16GB and swap the stock hard drive to a SSD - do this via third party....
That will give you a very fast 13 Inch Macbook Pro.

  • IMac mid 2011 21.5 inch Flicker

Hello, I have a mid 21.5 inch iMac week 20, that i have owned for 2 moths now and about 1 week after i updated to lion, i have been experiencing some extremely small flickers but it looks like its software related because it has been coming a few times and on the desktop, i do not think it is the display or graphics card but software related, any help would be very much appreciated and this is my first and hopefully only post.

Hmmmm I have this same issue I think. I bought a used 21.5" 2011 iMac with OS X Lion and I've noticed an occasional (and sometimes barely perceptible) flickering of what looks like the brightness setting. (This is not at all the same phenomenon as noticing the refresh rate, which is more of a horizontal scanline effect.
I saw that a firmware update had been released awhile back for 27" iMacs, but my understanding was that their flickering was somehow more severe.
My brightness setting is currently on 4 (level 15 or whatever must be positively blinding) and I tend to notice this flickering about 3-4 times a day and seems to be most often when I have the finder open or large white areas/docs showing (though don't quote me on that).
I don't think the iMac I bought has Applecare so this has me a little nervous.
Is it an addressable software issue? Zombiemage564Did deleting that entire systemconfiguration folder do anything? I see quite a few things in there and am nervous about just deleting it. Can any reader/Apple person weigh in on a possible fix?
    Thanks.

  • IMac vs Macbook pro 13 inch + aperture use

    Hello everyone,
First thanks in advance for replying!
    My situation:
Have an old iMac 17inch core 2 duo 2GHz with 1GB of RAM.
I don't have a laptop but i would like to have the portability of one, but it itsn't a necessty for the work i wanna do. (i can find a way around it all if need be)
What i do on my mac:
Most of the time i use my mac for web browsing, watching youtube video's, movies, TV shows, and social media, and as a hobby i'm into photography.
Currently i'm using iphoto to edit my photo's and while i find it good and practical i want to do a little more than what iphoto can do. I want to start using aperture for editing. Now remember it's as a hobby it's nothing hardcore just basic editing (black and white, saturation, adjusting colour and stuff).
So i'm going to buy myself a new Mac because this one is getting real slow when editing, even in iphoto. (takes like 5minuts to save the edited photo is way to long) Now i know i can upgrade the RAM for not much money but i want a new machine.
I'm at a dillema. Should i get the macbook pro 13 inch i7 or the imac 21,5 inch same price point?
If i get the macbook pro I would be using it somewhat like this: 90% desktop with external monitor 24inch and 10% portable.
(Like when i'm going on vacantion to edit some photo's or use it as storage for them, sitting downstares not behind my desk, take it a friends house. But all this i can miss if need be)
    Now for the questions
Is the macbook pro 13 inch going to cut it as a desktop computer + monitor while using aperture as the heaviest program ever and multi tasking?
Do i need the graphics card and quad core of the imac for aperture?
    Thanks

I wouldn't even consider a laptop. I upgraded from an iMac 17 to a 24 over three years ago and now it seems small c/w the 27.
I use my old 17 when I go on the road as it goes into a padded bag along with the keyboard and mouse and only takes minutes to set up.
You'll get far more bang for your buck with a desktop and it will last you a lot longer. MacBooks are famous for hard drive failure and I wouldn't bother with one until they are fitted with flash drives as standard.
Me, I'm waiting for a 17 inch Airbook to appear.

  • Do 17-inch and 20-inch iMac G5's have the same hard drive

    I have two iMac G5's. One 17-inch 1.8Ghz, and the other a 20-inch 1.8Ghz.
The Hard drive is gone on the 20-inch. Is it possible to remove the hard drive from the 17-inch, and install it in the 20-inch. Do they both use the same Hard drive type?

All iMac G5s and Intel iMacs both use Serial ATA hard drives. You can happily and cheaply buy new larger capacity drives easily anywhere on the highstreet. I can't really see the point in using a 2-3 year old drive if you are going to the effort of cracking one of these things open:Examples of suitable drives.
Likewise you'll probably find a brand new Superdrive is faster and pretty cheap:

  • Is it worth buying 21 inch iMac or buy the 27 inch iMac?

    please give some edvice

21 in iMac does not allow RAM upgrde later.   27 in lets you upgrade RAM later.
for 21 in you need to buy the amount of RAM you will need eventually.  That can drive the price of a 21 in up to a 27 in that has base-amounts of RAM but can be upgraded later for low cost.

  • IMac running hot  (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)

    Hi
I just wanted to give a heads up on my new intel iMac running hot when the monitor is brighter than half way or (newer) games are set to high graphics performance.
I was concerned from the back of the computer feeling very hot so I popped off the front glass and LED screen and took a couple pictures of the logic board where I assume capacitors or on the other side:
You can clearly see where the logic board is getting hot with a little scoring.
to resesolve this issue, I simpy run my games (which are newer ones btw) at lower graphics settings and keep the monitor level below half way. . .
anyway, just thought you should know.

    Ok panic over
    I found this http://www.derman.com/iMac-Fan-Control
I set the minimum fan speed to 2000, machine is much cooler now.  I suppose so long as the fan does not wear out I'll be fine now.
You know picures like you have taken are very worring, iMac is VERY expensive and I expect quality and I don't expect to see what you have. I feel your pain bro...

  • Apple iMac (G4-1.25GHz, 20-inch) Memory confusion

My iMac has 240mb Ram. I want to upgade it to its maximum. According to the handbook and Apple website this is 1024 mb.
My iMac appears to have only one slot so I assume I need to remove the 256mb card and insert a replacement 1024mb card.
Unfortunately I can't find a card that size for sale. The best I have found is 512mb. I sure there must be one around somewhere, could somebody point me towards it please?

I always recommend Crucial for RAM in the UK. You may get it slightly cheaper - but not from such a Mac friendly place with such a good returns policy. The snag with Crucial is that they'll only list for the User slots up to Apple's specs. But you can order it seperately (which I what I did to go to 1.5Gb RAM. The 1Gb SODIMM is really too expensive over this side of the world to be worth bothering so I stuck with 512Mb in the User slot.
If you do go for the Factory Slot as AxL suggests you can get both the PRAM battery and Thermal Paste from Maplin (Gloucester Rd, Bristol).

  • Can I connect my 27inch iMac to 2 other 27 inch iMac displays using 2 thunderbolt cables to create a 3 iMac canvas?

Any suggestions or personal experiences are welcome, thank you.

Hi Malcolm, Thank you for your valid help on this.
I read some rumours about the new Mac Pro comming with Thunderbolt, as it should be expected since all laptops and mac mini have one. Is your opinion that I should wait for the new Mac Pro to be anounced and then make my decision or should I just go ahead and buy the Thunderbolt displays since I am looking to purchase the Mac Pro in probably 2 years and by then they will almost for sure have Thunderbolt on them? Also could you please let me know if there is a big difference between the Cinema Display and the Thunderbolt Display beside the Thunderbolt conectivity, is the screen exactly the same? or is the TB faster?
Thank you for your help and imput on this
