IMac 20" making noise related to the brightness setting

Hi guys,
I just bought my imac 2 days ago and it has started to make noise on the night i bought it. But i figured out by tilting the mac forward for few seconds make it disappear.
Then i found out from the forum that it was the inverter and can be reduced by setting the brightness level which works in my case.
Just wondering should i concern about it and send it back to the store to get it fixed or just bear with it and solve the minor problems myself by tilting and making it goes max on the brightness setting?
Note: i found that it goes off after few minutes. Maybe it only happens at start up..
I just dont want to see this new IMac goes into surgery so soon...
"sigh"..

As a former authorized Apple service tech I agree with your findings. Thirty days ago I bought a 20" iMac (Early 2008) and the buzzing occurs when the iMac is 'cold' (ie: has been off for several hours and doing a cold bootup). Once booted up (to the login screen will do), use the F1 key to drop screen brightness a few notches (I go to 1/2 brightness) and there is the buzzing noise. Obvious. Simple. This noise was initially first noticed when the screen dimmed on its own when not using the iMac for 60-90 seconds or so.
... but once the iMac has been on for a while (say 10 minutes) and is 'warmed up' then I don't get the annoying buzzing noise when decreasing screen brightness.
... so I'd have to say the iMac's display inverter is needing to be replaced (unless it's integrated within the main display assembly module itself at which point the whole display panel needs swapping). Alternatively, this might be a power supply issue too although in my years as a technician any power supply issue (internal in the iMac's design) usually causes other goofy behaviour other than a screen brightness control problem.
So, Apple! You folks monitor these discussion boards. Can someone in the 'official channels' confirm/deny my findings here? Really Apple -- this issue is noted back to the 24" iMac design from 2006 so PLEASE tell us users that you DO have a permanent fix to this and it's being implemented at the production build level!!

  • What "exactly" does the Brightness setting in Print do?

What "exactly" does the Brightness setting in the Print module do?
I know it's a controversial button, especially now that there are proofing options available. Also, since you're using it "blind" it's impossible to know how much or what it's really doing.
Does anyone know if it's e.g.. the same as going to quick develop and going up on "exposure", or "brightness", or "shadows"... How exactly is it brightening the image, and is +100 a full stop or how is it calibrated?
    Thanks,
    Alan.

    Ooops,
Obviously there is NO brightness control in LR...is the print adjustment similar to an exposure adjustment or more like moving the "shadows" and "whites" adjustments (which if I understand corrrectly, moves tones above or below mid tones, but not highlights or blacks)?

  • IMac 2010 making noise

Hi guys, my iMac 2010 model has been making a loud fan noise after 1year(s) of use. I have used apple's hardware test but it says no problems found. Does this mean I'll have to send it to apple shop and send it for an expensive repair / service?

    Tom,
Is it running hot? Are the fans running fast for no good reason? Are you sure it's a fan noise and not the harddrive?

  • IMac 27'' making noises

My 27" iMac makes "stomach growling " noise at night when its idle. I can let it go to sleep but its a server as well so thats not an option. I took it to the genuis Bar where they installed anew 1TB HD but eventually it started to make the same noises. what do you suggest I do???

When my iMac accesses the hard drive it makes a noise that I suppose you could interpret as "stomach growling", but they're not really that loud that I would notice them at night...unless maybe the mac was in my bedroom. Is it THAT loud?

  • I am a PC user now adjusting to the iMac. How can I change the font setting so that every app is the same font...larger than what is currently showing?

I am new to th imac, having used a PC all of my life. I would like to set the text size for all applications, is this possible?

You can only do that globally by changing the screen resolution. In OS X it is on an application by application basis, if you can change it at all. For instance, for finder windows choose  View menu > Show view options. In Text Edit in Preferences > New Document. Mail > Format > Show Fonts but this is only for messages text.
In short, Apple wants you to live with what you've got and dosen't make it easy to change any fonts except the ones you use to compose.

  • Brightness setting changes everytime I turn on my powerbook.

Everytime I turn on my powerbook the brightness setting is at a different level. Sometimes it is all the to the dimmest setting and I can't even locate my pointer because my screen is so dark. Is there a way to keep the brightness setting from changes levels?

I have a brand new macbook that is having this problem, and I already have the display setting with the brightness slider all the way to the right, so that's not the problem. This machine is a replacement for an early macbook that went through too many repairs and finally got replaced. I never had this problem on the old one, so I'm baffled. I have installed all updates and I have my settings all the same as on the old machine, so I can't figure out why it's behaving this way. It doesn't happen every time the machine sleeps or restarts, but sometimes when I come back to the machine, I find the brightness is turned all the way down and I have to turn it back up.

  • Brightness setting on 2.2

I recently got a replacement 2G iphone as well as updated to 2.2 from 2.1. The brightness setting now is much dimmer than all previous version of iphone os. Auto brightness seems to be malfunctioning in 2.2. The screen does not adjust to a brighter setting when I step into a dark room.
I just want to find out whether it is the OS 2.2 that has a brightness bug or its the replacement 2G itself that has a bad light sensor???

Yes the auto brightness is on. I tried turning off then on again, off reset then on, hard reset. Nothing seem to aliviate the issue. I can put my thumb over the sensor bythe ear piece and the brightness level stay at really dimmed. Then sometimes when there good light, the screen is real bright. Like right now I'm typing this under a 100w flood buld and my screen is way up!?!?
The brigtness adjustment is definitely different on 2.2 vs. al prevous vrsion. I used to be miserly turn my slider at 1/8 way to save batt. But since upgrade to 2.2, I have to be at least 1/3 way up, with the auto brightness on.
I think it's hw issue but jus want to see if other have same issue on 2.2.

  • My 2009 iMac is making a very loud, rapid pulsating electronic noise. It stops temporarily after adjusting the screen brightness or using certain apps. But it always returns

My 2009 iMac is making a very loud noise. It sounds like a rapid, pulsating electronic noise. It stops when the screen brightness is adjusted or when using certain apps. But it always returns and is getting louder. The unit was shut down for 4 months and the house temperature was set to 5C. It was powered up 2 weeks ago and ran fine for a while. Then in the last 5 or 6 days the problem started. 5 days ago I did watch a bike race for 3 or 4 hours from a quasi legal stream. I am not tech savvy. Just very confused as I've had a trouble free run so far. Ditto with my iphone5.

I would recommend taking it in immediately to your local Apple Store or AASP to be loooked at by an Apple Genius. I suspect you made a goof somewhere but diagnosing noises without seeing it is really difficult.

Your iMac should be almost silent.

    Loud imac fan noise

Since it says you have Mac OS X 10.7.4 in your profile information, it sounds like you have an Intel iMac, not a PowerPC iMac.  Is that correct?
The procedure you describe is not exactly the right one for an Intel iMac.  You should follow this procedure to reset SMC (power management)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
When you do it, disconnect ALL peripheral devices from your computer, including your keyboard and mouse.  Connect the power cord only, and power it up that way, initially.
Also, check the vents along the bottom edge of the iMac.  If they are clogged with dusk, it can block proper airflow, which can cause overheating, which can cause the fans to run high.  If the fans runs high immediately after starting up the iMac (when it is cold), this would not be the cause.

  • Is anyone having flickering or visual noise issues with the latest 27" iMac (2012-13)?

    Hi everyone,
I received my 27" iMac a couple days ago via the online store. I've been so busy that I've hardly been on it, but I noticed last night that the entire screen was flickering to black. I looked closely and also noticed that there was very faint visual noise (or "snow") when the display would flicker on. In a panic, I shut down my computer and plugged it into another outlet to see if that could be the problem. I haven't noticed any problems since then, but I am skeptical as the initial incident was so random.
I have called Apple Care twice and they have been very helpful, but I also heard different versions of what to do: 1) Get an official diagnosis that it is in fact the hardware, and do a straight-up exchange, and 2) take it to an official Apple repair shop.
Either way, want to know if anyone else has had a similar problem; and if so, is it worth trying to get repaired? The repair shop was suggested because I'm about an hour drive from the nearest Apple retail store (which is frustrating in itself), but I would much rather get it exchanged than go back and forth with diagnostics and repairs.
    Thanks for the help!
*Disclaimer: I am very satisfied with the Apple Care service I have been given thus far, just frustrated and disappointed that my brand new expensive computer is giving me problems out of the box, and that I'll have to travel to get it replaced. Not to mention I've already installed a bunch of fonts and software! Ugh.

I'm using a Spyder3Pro with the new iMac and haven't run into problems. I did bring down the brightness three notches before calibrating - that LED is very bright.
I know there were problems with the previous generation's glossy screens (too bright) but I've gone from the old matte version to this one and I'm loving it.

  • My IMAC is making a little noise - is that normal?

    Hello Folks,
    I got a IMAC 2.1gjz PowerPC G5 - 512mb ram
So just wondering if it normaly does a noise when its turned on... I gett its the fan inside the computer that is doing that... but i'll tell you where the noise is coming from and you can prolly tell me...
if you are lookin from the back of the Imac the noise is coming from the buttom right corner where the power button is...
Now the noise is not VERY LOUD... its a small noise .... so just wondering could it be that I need to optimize my computer? if so what optimization programs are good for MAC?
I believe my hard drive is 260gigs and I only used around 80gigs so I have 180gigs available... I dont abuse my IMAC - so just wondering if this is normal (and im just over reacting) or something serious... again it's not a loud noise, small minimal but still can hear it... I just thought that these IMAC's don't make noise when their on...
    Regards,
    Joey

    Hi Joey,
From you profile, we must have the same iSight G5. Mine does not make any noise other than the very, very quiet whirring of the fans.
The only thing I can think of making noise in that area is the left side speaker. There is not much there, the HD is located above the switch area.
I do recommend tuning your machine: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/performance.html - http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html I do run the maintenance scripts via Terminal. My machine, to me, seems to run a bit quieter, and certainly runs cooler by a few degress after using the scripts.
    Good luck, Rick
