IMAC 20 thin horizonal lines , then freezes shortly after normal boot.

20inch Intel IMAC, late 2006 model 2.16 processor, 2 Gig RAM OSX 10.4.
Horizontal lines are very thin and appear in random locations on screen.
Safe Mode Boot works fine, no horizontal lines in display, no freezing. Used Safe mode to update S/W to latest versions of 10.4. Extended Diagnostics from OSX CD show no problems. Tried to reload OSX from CD but computer freezes too quickly to complete in Normal mode and don't know how to in safe mode. Any assistance appreciated.

I have your soultion!
Send or drop off your unit to an Apple Store .. they will fix it free whether not or its out-of-warranty!

  • Backup Freezes shortly after start

I've a recurring problem with Time Machine, whereby the backup appears to freeze shortly after starting. No error message is reported and I can see nothing in the log.
At first it seemed to be caused by my children's log-in still being active but it's not that. It does seem to happen more when my wife has left lots of applications open, including MS Word with lots of documents.
I've checked the external disk (Lacie 500GB), even erased and reformatted it (Mac OS Extended (Journaled), same as by iMac hard disk) but to no avail. Stopping the back-up does nothing. Pulling the cable or turning the disk off whilst kills the current back-up doesn't cure the problem.
The only solution is to restart and run a back-up straight away.
    Any ideas?

Unfortunately, a lot of things can cause this.
Let's take a look at the log: there may be a clue. Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget from: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to one of these stalled backups, copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).

That sort of thing might slow it down a bit, but shouldn't be much.

Also check the *Partition Map Scheme* shown by Disk Utility on the first line of the drive (the one with the make and size). It should be GUID for an Intel Mac, +Apple Partition Map+ for a PPC Mac.
Is your LaCie Firewire or USB? How is it connected?
Does it have it's own power supply, or does it get power from your Mac?
Are you running FileVault, any virtualization software, or any significant non-Apple software?
How much data is on your internal HD?
That info plus the logs should at least get us started.

on system start up safari boots up and shortly after chrome boots up. why? I do not want chrome to boot up..  What do I need to do?

It's likely that one of your login items is causing the problem. Select the Login Items tab in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences. Delete any items that you don't recognize. If you're not sure which ones to delete, double-click each to test it.

  • Blue lines then freezing up

I've been having some trouble with the imac freezing up on me. It usually happens just after thin blue lines start to appear on the screen while on the internet. I then have to turn it off and leave it sit for a while before I can boot it back up. If I try to boot it right away I get a blue screen with some white lines in it. This all started happening after I noticed some faint horizontal lines in the icons. Those have been there for a couple of weeks now. This process happens every 2-3 days or so. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Mike

    Thanks for the advice Miriam!
I've reset the SMU and went ahead and did the PRAM as well. The lines in the icons are now gone and it seems to be running okay. Its still locking up some though. Happens more on the internet than when I'm in Photoshop or Word. I did the extended hardware check from the system disk and everything passes that test. I haven't been able to determine any pattern so far. Sometimes it goes days without crashing and then some days I see that spinning beachball of death multiple times. A few times I have seen thin blue lines appear randomly on the screen right before crashing. When that happens I have to let it sit for a while before I can restart the machine. When it crashes without seeing the blue lines I can restart it immediately. Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Mike

  • ITunes 10.5.3 freezes shortly after start-up (culprit= iTunes match?)

    Hi,
I'm running an early 2011 macbook pro (OS X 10.7.2, 2.3GHz quad core i7, 8GB RAM). iTunes has started freezing up and becoming non-responsive shortly after opening. It takes between 30 seconds and ~5 minutes, irrespective of what I'm doing in iTunes.
I think this may have started after purchasing an iTunes match subscription, but I'm not entirely sure the two are linked. If I stop the iTunes match process, iTunes will still freeze up.
Is anybody else experiencing this problem? I've seen a few unanswered posts similar to this.
When will 10.5.4 be released, and will it solve this issue? Is there an easy way to return to an earlier version of iTunes without having to add everything to my library all over again, and do any earlier versions have iTunes match support?
It would be really nice to be able to actually use iTunes again.
EDIT: if I'm playing music through iTunes when it freezes up, it will continue playing until the end of the track. The next track doesn't play though.
    Thanks,
    Dylan

    CindyCoult wrote:
It's possible. The technician also indicated to me that 10.5.3 was the most recent version of iTunes. Could just be that the version you upgraded to is extremely buggy still.
Yes, lots of complaints and issues with 10.7.3 which may have brought this about on my early 2009 Mac Pro  which on it I have my system that has gone through an earlier mac pro, maccbook pro and iMac over past few years with out needing to do a clean install and then go back and update from time machine.  My 13 inch macbook air does not have problems but I do a lot less with it and do not use the itunes on it to sync my iOS devices which gave me the most problems on 10.5.3.
I have done the deed (remotely) and itunes seems ok and stable, but now we will see how syncing goes with my two ipads, and iphone.  Testing over next 24 hours will tell the tail. If this works then I will sit back a bit and see what the issues are with the 10.7.3 OS upgrade before reapplying on my Mac Pro.
Thanks for info, this may be what I have been waiting for.

  • Why does my entire system freeze shortly after I open iTunes?

    Hi!
So I have OS X Lion installed on my new iMac 21.5" desktop. I don't know if I'm having an OS problem or an App problem here. Everything seems to run fine (a little sluggish at times though) UNTIL I use iTunes. Within a couple minutes of having iTunes open, the entire system freezes up. I can't do anything except for move the cursor around. If I wait around, every 45 seconds or so, it unfreezes itself only for a brief second or two and then freezes again. After waiting around for several minutes of it doing this, I can eventually manuever around to force quit iTunes.. OR I can simply turn the power off from the back of the iMac and restart... Either way, I haven't even been able to submit crashes to Apple to alert them of a problem. Once iTunes has been force quit, everything runs fine again. I have had this happen at least 15 - 20 times already and am very frustrated! Does anyone have a good idea what's going on here? Any suggestions of what I should do? I haven't contacted Apple about this problem yet.
Also, I've experienced this iTunes problem with both a small library (fewer than 100 songs), and with a very large library (1000s of songs). I usually won't have more than 4 apps opened at one time anyway as to not over burden my system.. So I don't believe I'm having a memory issue here. I've had this problem happen when my iPod was syncing, and when it was not even connected or turned on. I've tried several things including 1) reinstalling Lion, 2) resetting my iPod, 3) having all other items disconnected from my iMac, 4) I verified permissions and performed a disk repair in Disk Utility 5) turned Time Machine off & on... I haven't noticed problems with other applications.. other than once my DVD player froze up for a few seconds (along with the rest of my system) while on the dvd main menu. I really don't use many applications often and Lion is still new to me. So I'm not aware of having problems with other applications yet. Thanks.

  • Print's first line then freezes

Blue tooth connetion is fine on both printer and computer.  Computer recognizes printer.  Printer says "ready." When send a document to print, paper drops in properly, and printer makes printing noise. Display says "Now Printing," but nothing seems to be happening.  Eventurally an error message displays on laptop. Cancel printing (which requires disabling from labtop to get it to stop). When paper comes out, only first line of text printed. Called tech support. They asked me to print from notepad.  It prints from notepad (only tested on line of text).  It wll also print from Word doc if only one line of text.  WIth multiple lines of text or images from any program, it fails. I uninstalled, reinstalled, checked ink cartriges, checked paper, turned on-off, restarted, turned on devices in both orders (printer first, computer first)... all multiple times. Same result. The printer was able to print a webpage before (only printed one page since I've owned it). Now that I have installed the updated driver it does not work.

Hey , Welcome to the HP forums! I hope you enjoy your stay here. I see that you are experiencing some issues with printing from your Windows 8.1 machine to your Officejet 150. I can help with that. First, to make sure the printer itself is functional on the printer click on Setup and then Reports and then Print Status Report. If that prints then we know the printer itself is functional. Next, we'll test your print system. To do so:Turn the printer off.Go to your PC's Control Panel and then Printers and Devices.Right click on any picture of the printer you have.Click on Remove Device.Repeat for any other printers that are listed.Turn the printer on.Try printing. If this works then we know your print system is fine. From here we can try printing through Bluetooth. To do so:Return to Devices and Printers.Right click on the printer to remove it.Add the Bluetooth printer back.Try printing.Hopefully this will allow you to print. If you have any other questions please let me know. Likewise if it resolves your issues then please let others know by clicking on Accept as Solution below my post. I hope this helps and I hope you have a great evening!

  • Why will my iMac boot fine in Safe Mode but freezes on a normal boot?

It is a 17" iMac.  1.83Ghz Core 2 Duo.  1GB RAM.  160GB Hard Drive.  Combo Drive with Intel GMA 950 GPU.
I took out the screen and put in in a different computer a while back.  This was a working computer before hand.  I pulled it off the shelf the other day to get it going (using an External Monitor) and when it gets past the Apple Screen, it goes to the blue screen, and then loads the wallpaper and some of the taskbar, but no dock and it freezes.  (This is on a fresh install of Leopard).  When I boot to safe mode, it boots fine.  I have tried reseating RAM, different RAM sticks, and a different hard drive. Also replaced PRAM battery.  Done a SMC reset and a PRAM reset.  No change.
Also worth noting was that when I tried to boot my Leopard disc, it would freeze at the Choose Language screen.  So I took the HD out and installed Leopard thru my other iMac and reinstalled OS X.  Did the same thing when I tried to boot from a Snow Leopard disc.
    Ideas??

Hello, in Safe Mode did you try setting a good resolution on the Display?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems

    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons

  • My iPhone 4S is freezing shortly after being disconnected from the charger and/or while trying to unlock my phone.

Why is my 3 day old iPhone 4S freezing after being disconnected from a power source and/or while trying to unlock the phone?

hold down the power/home key together for 10 to 15 secs or until you see the apple logo and then release then wait for your phone to boot back up.

  • Mouse curser freezes shortly after startup

My mouse curser freezes quite often on start up. I have to turn the laptop off and on again to resolve. It doesn't do it every time just nearly every time. It seems to happen after being turned off for an hour or so, in other words I can turn off/on and it will work, then turn off for an hour or so and turn on again and it freezes.

    Hi @darcydo ,
Welcome to the HP Community! I hope that you enjoy your experience with us.
I saw your post regarding the problems with the TouchPad freezing. You mentioned that it happens when you turned it off for an hour. Are you actually shutting it right down or are you letting it go to sleep or hibernate mode? Try reinstalling your Synaptics TouchPad Driver from your driver page. It is listed under Drivers – Keyboards, Mouse and Input Devices.
