IMac 20" - whirring noise every few minutes

hi
since yesterday, every few minutes a whirring noise occurs. It builds up quite loudish like a crescendo and then resorts back to normal sound levels pretty much straight away once it has hit the highest noise level. Roughly happens every 4 mins and lasts approx 10 seconds. Also happens when im not using/running anything.
i better mention the night before it started i had to move the iMac off my desk for the first time and therefore pulled the mains out. checked other internet discussions that were based on fan noise and which suggested removing the mains lead again and waiting for 15 secs. i have done this but the whirring noise still occurs.
does anyone have suggestions what it might be?
thanks in advance
adam

thanks guys for the quick reply.
i shall have a go at resetting the SMC now and will let you know if it continues.
more information required; come to think of it, the noise sounds like when you put something in a fan and when the blades passes it, it makes that flipping noise. or even when you put a ruler on the end of the desk and 'flick' it it makes that same flipping noise.
hope you can try and work out from that what i mean. not the best at describing noises. just seems weird how its like a crescendo and then dies out straight away once its got to a high noise. it seems like its coming slightly to the NW of the middle of the screen. also seems to make a louder noise when ive got a few things open.
hope that helps.
will try the SMC and will report back.
thanks again

  • Strange "twanging" noise every few minutes

My iPad is making a strange "twanging" noise every few minutes and I can't seem to find the reason for this.  It is driving me and my whole family crazy.  What can be causing this?  I tthought it was some sort of alert, but can't find the source.

It's almost certainly an app alert. Go to Settings, Notifications and see which apps are yelling at you. ry switching them al to OFF, then re-enabling them one by one

  • Idle Super Drive, makes noise every few minutes

My empty and idle super drive will make a mechanical noise, which sounds like the initial motion before the drive drawer opens (perhaps the head seeking and moving). The sound is an annoyance and obviously something is moving and therefore wearing. This happens every few minutes, even when the computer is idle. The drive works fine, both reading and burning. Anyone know what is initiating this movement and how to stop it?
    Thanks!
    G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

My PowerMac G5 drive makes the same noise. It's been happening ever since 10.4.6.
About every five minutes or so, the superdrive will sorta spin up like it's about to read a CD-ROM even if there's no CD in the drive.
It's sorta annoying but I'm more worried about the extra wear and tear on the drive.
I haven't been able to figure out why this happens.

No. There's nothing wrong with Mail, so changing it by upgrading to Lion will not solve the problem you're experiencing.
If you're being asked for your password every time Mail checks for new mail, then there are two possible solutions. Let's try the first one:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Open Keychain Access, go to the Keychain Access Menu and choose Keychain First Aid. Chhose repair, type in your password and click on Start. When it's done, quit Keychain Access.
    3. Restart Mail and see if the problem is still there.
If it is, then try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Open Keychain Access, select Passwords and scroll through the list until you find the password entry for that email account; delete it, and quit Keychain Access.
    3. Restart Mail, and when it asks for your password, enter it and check the box to store it in your Keychain.
With any luck, that will definitely solve your problem.

  • I have an iMac, and have a Verizon DSL account. Recently, my Mac Mail keeps requesting the passwords on my account every few minutes, and will not allow me to send messages using Mac Mail. I cannot edit the outgoing server; how can I send emails?

I have an iMac, and have a Verizon DSL account (3 email addresses). Recently, my Mac Mail keeps requesting the passwords on my accounts every few minutes, and will not allow me to send messages using Mac Mail (the message says that the outgoing server was rejected. I cannot edit the outgoing server, and the keychain will not save my passwords (the ports are valid). How can I change the outgoing server to send emails, and how can I avoid having Mail request my passwords every 2 minutes? Verizon, as usual, will not provide support to iMacs.

Is there an email saved in your drafts or outbox folder?  I suspect that Mail is continually trying to send it, and each time Google is rejecting the email message.
You can open the message and then delete it from your Outbox folder.  Then try removing all @gmail email addresses from it and seeing whether you can send to the other folks.  I suspect that will work.
With email, if an SMTP server *can* verify email addresses, sometimes it will and it will refuse to send messages.  If a message has to be relayed across servers, no verification is done, and you'll get a bounce if an email address is bad.

  • MICROSOFT FOR MAC FREEZING EVERY FEW MINUTES!

Does anyone know why whenever I'm working on Word or Excel on my Macs, that every few minutes the application freezes, indicating that I have to go & kill 5-10 minutes before I can continue with my work?
    It's very frustrating :-(
I'd be grateful for any help / advice.
    Thanks.

Try repairing your drive for starters.
For another, killing can leave open files corrupt.

  • Every few minutes my screen goes blue! It has never done this before I upgraded to Lion.

I installed Lion last night, now every few minutes my screen goes blue! It has never done this before I upgraded to Lion.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Jack
Thanks for the reply. Thankfully, it has stopped now.
My iMac is quite new and less than half full, so I don't think deleting anything would have helped. Maybe the CPU was working too hard for a while ?
Just glad that it is now stable again.

  • 3 "not  really chimes"    every few minutes

I am hearing 3 (three) "not really chimes" every few minutes, through the loudspeakers. It interrupts music and occurs apparently randomly. Any clues as to how to rid myself of this noise that haunts everything that i do !?

    Hi robin2004studio-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards
Most likely the sound is caused by an external device. I have had firewire drives inject so much noise into the circuit that they have to be off during recording sessions.
Could you provide a little more information about your setup? What speakers are you using? How are they connected?

Im now at a bit of a loss. The firmware is Version 8.1.H.J (Type A) and i notice that the firmware updated on todays date.
Im hoping someone has some ideas as im all out now.

I have the same problem friday afternoon at 4.30 to 11.30 at night the router reset itself every five minutes ....the prob first started in nov 2010 i have had 3 home engineer visits and finally we might be getting somwhere it looks like its caused by interferance on the line the phones fine its the broadband ,looking at the engineers meter it was running fine then all of a sudden it spikes erros 21,000 of them the router reboots and steadys again .......somthings causing line interferance it could be anything a pir on a security light ,a street lamp with a faulty timer ,there has even been a case where a car tyre garage has had its broadband removed by sombodys faulty tv .......
the engineer fitted a resistor box under the wall socket and ran the wires through it to the socket ...this is disigned to filter out certain frequencies of line pollution but not all ......it seems to be working its only shut down twice tonight and that could be the exchange mucking about as they are continuing to monitor the problem ......HOPING ....... oh he also removed the front of the wall socket and fitted me a dsl one with a separate phone socket hence doing away with the dsl filter ......................

  • FRUSTRATING!! 4 month 27" iMac. WIFI drops every few mins.

I have a 4 month 27" Intel iMac. The WiFi connection drop every few minutes.
I called up phone support and they told me to move the router away from magnetic fields so now I have 'stuck' it to the ceiling of my apartment away from the Cordless Phone, TV etc....
    Power Cycled the Modem
    Updated the Mac Software
Called up the cable company to check for Firmware updates
Updated firmware on the wifi router
I then too the iMac physically to GENIUS - they kept it for a day and ran checks but did not find any issue with the system
Renewed the DHCP Lease as advised by someone on this forum
    All possible approaches
Point is - this does not solve my problem. I have to click disconnect and re-connect WiFi every few minutes. It 'drops' while drafting a mail and then you have to reconnect to SEND the mail OR when streaming a movie 'LOADING' every few minutes and you have to re-connect.
What is the point of a high end computer when it cannot hold on to a wifi which my $500 Dell holds seamlessly and so does my iPhone and Wii.
    Anyone have a concrete solution?

    Hi
I may have a fix for you.  It requires you to change your WiFI security from WPA/WPA2 to the (lower) security but effectively still pretty secure WEP.  You can use the 128bit security.  Some routers seem to have a problem with the passwords of WPA - I don't know the technical stuff but its happened to me not just on a mac network but on a Windows XP network aswell.  I offer this to you because it worked for me, and is still working.
The thing to do is to log onto your router and change its security from WPA to WEP.  To do this open your browser of choice and type in the ip address of your router.  eg. 192.168.1.2  The side of your router should have this address displayed.  If you have changed your router's ip address for some reason you need to use that address, obviously.
Navigate to your security page on your router.  You may have to type in an Administrator password for the router.  (this prevents anyone with a bit of knowledge randomly, or maliciously changing your settings and locking you out).
Select WEP security, and select 128bit if you have the option.  This will give you a passkey of 26" bits" long.
Type in your new security password.  Write it down EXACTLY as you type it.  Remember, for WEP you can only use Hexadecimal - so numbers 0 to 9 and letters a to f in any combination.  JUST make a note of it exactly, as if you don't, getting back on your router via wifi will be impossible.
Next on your iMac, or whatever, delete your wifi network connections.  You could also delete your wifi connection in Network Preferences,  and start again.  To make things absoutley sure you can edit your keychain and delete the keychainentry for your old WPA wifi network name aswell.
Now, in Network Preferences under Network Name type the SSID of your wifi network exactly as it is on the router.  The iMac will find the network and offer you a box to enter your WEP password.  Type it in exactly as you remebered/wrote it down.  You should now be connected to your Network using WEP security.
You shouldn't have any more problems with dropping wifi connections after sleeping your iMac and in most real world situations you will still be spretty secure.
I offer this fix "as is" - if you don't feel competent to make the changes then don't - just ask someone who does know!
    David

  • Tecra M9 PTM91E : WLan Intel 4965AGN disconnect every few minutes

I have a M9 laptop, model PTM91E. The wireless connection keeps disconnecting (then reconnecting again) every few minutes. This happens on every wireless network I try connecting to. Here what I have on my laptop: -
    Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
    Driver version 11.5.0.32
    Driver date 9/26/2007
    XP Pro
Toshiba suggest I upgrade to Windows Vista, something I have nigtmares about.
Does anyone else have the same problem? Any solutions?
    Thanks

I have read about the similar issue on a Sat A210 and with Atheros WLan card.
The solution was a BIOS and WLan driver update
    So check it out.
    Good luck

  • Macbook pro ( 13" mid 2009 ) keeps freezing every few minutes since downloading mavericks

Ever since downloading osx Mavericks , my mac book keeps on crashing every few minutes. Doesn't matter what application I am using, system hangs every few minutes. I have been looking at Activity monitor closely. Following programs end up using a lot of CPU and hang a lot:
SystemUIServer ( not responding -- several times )
Google Chrome ( not responding -- several times )
Google Chrome Helper ( not responding -- several times )
PepperFlashPlayer ( not responding -- several times )
Windows Server ( not crashing -- but using a lot of CPU resources - remains at top 5 CPU usage tasks. )
Looking at Console app .. following programs cause a lot of crashes: ( Console itself was not responding several times I was looking at it )
    systemstatsd
    GoogleChromeHelper
I also ran EtreCheck program .. here is the output:

    ChmodBPF - Path: /Library/StartupItems/ChmodBPF
StartupItems can slow your Mac down.
Go to HD > Library > StartuItems
    Remove this:  ChmodBPF
    Restart your Mac.
If it's still slow, open System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items
Remove Google Drive.  (iTunes Helper should not be a problem)
    Restart your Mac.

  • Firefox 3.6.6 crashes every few minutes or freezes up even when i'm not doing anything

For the last few days, firefox has been crashing or freezing up every few minutes. It seems to be independent of what websites i'm on. Firefox either just freezes up ("this program is not responding") or will crash entirely and i'll get the firefox crash console. I've tried disabling all my addons and that didn't help either. My explorer seems much more stable.

Having the same problem and is adding up to the problems I keep experiencing like the huge memory loads (tried everything, but no cure found).
See the graphs added, this is when I don't even use firefox.

My iPad2 is frozen at slide to unlock screen, every few minutes the apple appears in the middle of the screen and couple of minutes later it will go back on freeze to the slide to unlock screen .  I have tried all tricks even the restoration through iTunes which I was never able to complete because of the apple screen; iTunes thinks I am resetting my iPad and the restoration get aborted.
Please help, I can't even turn it off.

    Force iPad into Recovery Mode
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Connect USB cable to computer; leave the other end alone
    3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
    5. Release the Home button
    6. Open iTune
    7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
    8. Use iTune to restore iPad
