IMac 2007 20'' black screen and fan loud

Hi, I have a imac from 2007 and i got it from an other person that said to me that the problem was the rams, and i got the rams and the screen continues black and the fans loud.
Thank you.

Hello brunofig132,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your iMac is booting to a black screen and loud fans. The following article provides steps to troubleshoot the startup process for your iMac. It should give you an indication of what might be causing the problem.

  • IMac G5 (iSight) Black Screen and Won't Start...HELP!

    Hi,
I have an iMac G5 (iSight) PPC, 2005, model 1145.  All was running well until a couple of weeks ago (see post/thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/16191999#16191999), when I had an issue with a grey screen, no start, and spinning wheel.  Through a series of replies, it was determined that I probably had a corrupt file in the OS (10.5.8).  I did an Archive and Install of the OS and all was running very smoothly....until....NOW!!!!!!!
At this point, I cannot start up at all.  When I turn on the computer, I get a 'light', but in a few moments, the fan gets loud, stays loud, and the screen is just black.
I tried to start up from my Leopard Disk, hoping I could run the utility....but that didn't work....AND NOW I've the install disk stuck in the drive!!!!!
I also thought it might just be some bad RAM, so I took that out and tried to start up again, but that didn't work either.
At this point, I'm clueless and hope that someone might be able to offer some good advice.
    Thanks,
    Sandie

Just repaired my iMac G5 with complete boot failure, it all came down to capacitors, there was an industry wide use of sub standard/sub spec capacitors at the time the imac G5 was manufactured, due to a manufacturer using a capacitor recipe missing one ingredient, This caused the imac G5's to fail at a much faster rate than they should have done, I had to replace half the capacitors in the power supply and 5 of the higher rated capacitors nearest the power supplies internal vent onto the logic board once this repair was affected, my machine worked perfectly.
take the cover of the back of you imac G5 and see whether your imac version has some led diagnostic lights and check whether the power diagnostic led light lights up properly when started, there are tutorials for this on the web also a light there that indicates whether gpu is communicating with the display properly. all led internal green lights should light up, apart from the right hand one of the four.
with your dark screen and sleep light on symptoms it seems quite likely a surface mount BGA graphics chip failure, but to be honest it could also be a capacitor related issue, if your not into stripping the machine down and soldering capacitors then the machine for you is probably a right off, just try a pram reset boot before giving up, I had similar sleep light no boot scenario on a macbook pro, and a full stripdown got it booting again.
the power supply in the imac G5(als version at least) gets very hot and has no fan of its own and is dependant on the one internal left hand open motherboard fan for its cooling in my opinion it gets too hot, there is also no temp sensor for the power supply to give you an indicator as to how hot its getting, I feel the the heat venting from the overheating power supply internally is what cooked the capacitors nearest it, this is a flaw in the design of this machine. One way to reduce this issue is to perhaps use some kind of extra fan control software to boost the based speed of motherboard fan, whilst at the same time placing and extra entry quality pc fan thin filter foam on intake underneath to prevent any extra dust intake because of the fan speed increase so as to protect the machine from clogging with extra dust and heating the power supply further

  • Black screen and fan running full- bore

Computer was running fine when I closed the lid (no shutdown) to put it to sleep for the night. Next morning as usual I opened the lid but the screen showed no signs of waking up. The battery was apparently dead so I plugged it in. Pushed the power button and the fan came on full-bore and the screen never showed a sign of coming to life. Restart, no help. Attempted to zap the PRAM but no signs that the key commands were recognized. (2 month old keyboard after the computer took a nasty fall and the old one popped out damaging the ribbon cable connector). Inserted a disk I thought would allow the computer to boot off of, it did some spinning but no change in computer's operational status. Eject button or key commands now fail to get the CD out. The only way to restart is to press power button until computer goes off then press again to start. The fan just keeps on running but nothing on the screen.
Connected computer to external monitor, no help, even after restarting. The monitor is connected to a G4 platinum tower so I know it works.
I also don't see a way to eject the inserted CD manually as command E, eject button, won't eject it.
I'm at a loss! First time a Mac has gotten the best of me. None of my years of little trick gathering has helped.

I tried holding down the trackpad button (forever), no help.
Was the computer all the way off (no lights, fan, sounds, etc.)?
Hold down the power button for ten seconds to shut everything off. If that doesn't do the trick, unplug the power adapter and remove the main battery. Then put them back, hold down the trackpad button, and start up. Is your CD ejected this time? If not, shut everything down again.
If it's a bootable CD, try booting to it after resetting the PRAM: hold down the p and r keys while starting up, and keep holding them down until you've heard three or four startup chimes (if you hear any). After the chimes, release those keys and immediately press the c key to force the PB to try to start up from the CD. Any luck? If the CD isn't a bootable one, of course there's no point in trying this step.
I tried restarting in the firmware mode (command, option, O, F), no help.
I don't know anything about that, so I'm no help with it either.
Before the black screen problem I noticed the battery would run down to zero overnight when the lid was closed and computer was sleeping. I'm not sure this is normal.
Definitely NOT normal, and this is undoubtedly a clue to what's wrong. Something is allowing the battery to drain when it shouldn't. (Batteries, actually, since the backup battery will also drain completely within 10-15 minutes after the main battery, if no AC adapter is connected.) This strongly suggests a short circuit to me. But tell me: do you always leave the Powerbook sleeping on battery power overnight, without the AC adapter connected? Or does the battery drain even with the adapter connected? That would point to a fault in the adapter or in the charging circuitry inside the Powerbook.
A short circuit might leave marks on the surfaces that are coming into contact and shouldn't be. Check the inside of the bottom panel, the logic board surface components, the underside of the keyboard, and whatever else you can see for visible signs of shorting. If you can see that something has been shorting against the inside of the bottom panel, as has occasionally been reported here, cover the affected spot with a small piece of electrical tape to insulate it. Tighten all visible screws — you'll need Phillips #0 and Torx #8 drivers. Look for empty screw holes: a screw wandering around loose inside could cause untold damage.
My AC adapter appears to work fine, it, like the battery, is only a couple of months old. Thing ringlight shows normally.
By "normally," do you mean orange while charging, green when the battery is fully charged, and never flashing, red, or off? That's what normal is.
If you haven't tried to recharge your internal backup battery as described in step 6 of the "Testing Backup Battery" article I linked above, do. Of course you won't be able to see or set the date and time or verify that the battery has been charged, but you can at least do what is supposed to charge it and hope for the best. Again, if it is discharged and hasn't been recharged in the course of all your machinations so far, everything else you do is doomed to fail until it gets recharged.
If after that nothing has changed, you might try disconnecting the backup battery from the logic board. Doing so will sometimes allow a PB to start up that has been prevented from doing so by a stone-dead backup battery. Consult the iFixit Guide for your particular Tibook model to find out exactly where the backup battery connector is in it. In my 1GHz Tibook, it's a small white connector under the right-hand Shift key, with red, white and black wires attached.
If none of this helps, I'm afraid you're due for a trip to the repair shop.

  • IMAC start issues: black screen and required to enter EXIT.

At iMAC start I get black screen with Root directory and requested to enter EXIT to continue. This happens very frequently. Can somebody help me to solve this issue? Thanks

I would suggest booting from the Recovery partition, choosing Disk Utilities, then running Repair Disk and Repair Permissions.  See if that clears this issue.
Others may have suggestions, but if the above doesn't work you may need to reinstall Mountain Lion...again, from the Recovery partition.

  • 20" imac gets random black screen and wont wake up.

O.K. this imac randomly goes to a black screen while your using it. It looks like it's asleep accept the light in the front doesn't pulse and it wont wake up.
If I hit the power button to put it to sleep I can then wake it up.
I tried resetting the SMU but have had no luck (not sure if it's even resetting seeing the date and time are still good) not sure why seeing resetting the SMU is a very simple processes.
    It's a 20" intel imac 2GHz duo with system 10.4.11 (early 2006)
I was going to reinstall 10.4.11 to see if that helps and wanted to see if anyone else knows what to do. Its very random and seems to be getting worse, sometimes as soon as I get it fixed it goes black again. It usually only takes 15-30min after start up and doesn't matter if your using it or not.

    Hi all,
my first mac ever was also an Early 2006 20" iMac and it had the same symptons as yours late last year.
Tried all I could think of and then took it to an Apple Dealer here in Hamburg.
Turned it was the Power Supply Unit (both of them) and a repair (out of Applecare obviously) would have been in the range of about 500 Euros (material plus manhours).
So I decided to not get it repaired.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • IMac, update causing black screen and randomly powers off...?

I've seen many comment on this with few solutions.  It had never occurred until yesterday afternoon after the latest security update for Mavericks, 2014-005 v.1, was loaded and the system was rebooted.  After that moment the mac has been unusable.  It will start and after user log on, will black screen, sometimes still running and other times instantly powered off.  I have followed resetting the PRAM, and SMC procedures with no change and have booted into safe mode in order to examine the system and it is just as unstable there.  The times I have gotten it booted and running, attempting to access an earlier Time Machine backup, but before I can start reload it goes black.  The same goes while trying to check the sleep mode and security settings.  Unless this is an amazing coincidence, I believe the latest update has caused this problem and has for others as I have seen on many conversations.  Can this be uninstalled or does the drive need to get wiped and then reload from the Time Machine?
    Thanks.

Well, initial call into Apple Care and one answer.  "We have no idea what it is, we can get you an appointment at a Genius Bar in 4 days!"  4 days?!  Seriously?  At least they were kind enough to only put me on hold for 30 minutes, AND then transferred me to a "Sr. Care Specialist" who basically blew smoke up my arse only to tell me the same thing... why transfer me at all?

  • G4 ibook Black Screen and "Fan of Death"

(Posted last night. Removed for unspecified reasons. edited so is within terms of use and reposted).
My 2nd ibook just died. Treated it like a baby never dropped on it's head or anything, and yesterday it suddenly decided to play up.
    So what happened?
Well I'm sitting there with the 12" G4 ibook on my lap and blink the screen goes black, power still on, backlighting still on, but no display. Hmmm.
Ok let's not panic, turned off, waited, then turned on again.
Nothing! No image no start-up, except the rear fans going at MAX SPEED.
Turned it off **** quick. Turned on...same thing Whirrrrrr!
This continues until finally machine stays on. For 2-3 minutes that is, then blink the screen blacks out again, no beachball nothing just off!
Ever since then nothing but the fan! No start-up screen nothing.
So I start reasearching, and turns out a LOT of people have been experiencing the exact same problem. Okay now I'm freakin'
I read more and there it is a website explaining the situation: (link removed in case this is frowned upon).
Suggests there may be a batch manufactured around the same time in late '04 - '05, that have faulty soldering on a chip just to the laft of the trackpad. I don't know but I'm not impressed as I went through this with the G3 ibook this replaced which was part of the batch with the faulty logicboards.
Thankfully Apple eventually acknowledged the problem there and my and other peoples G3 ibooks were fixed, but this time the're saying there's no problem! I am unimpressed.
It's not right that I buy TWO ibooks only to have them BOTH die after a couple of years of careful use. Not right at all!! The ingenious remedy put forward by others with the same problem is applying a lot of pressure to the casing in that spot to force the chip to make a connection to the solder(?!), perhaps even using a clamp to keep it held down.
Guess what I tried it, palm down max pressure, and IT WORKS! Take my hand away and Zzzt screen off and back to square one. The alternative and only official avenue to resolve the problem? BUY A NEW LOGICBOARD?!?!
I have a Mac Mini, iMac and 3 iPods so you know I love you're work Apple, but there are limits to what a person can reasonably put up with! At this stage after being twice burnt with your notebooks I'm VERY hesitant about repeating the mistake.
Finding an email link on your site so I can lodge my issue has proved impossible. Hopefully I'll get a response other than a deletion.
Reading others posts, at present more than 2000 people have enquired about the same problem, and an independant body has verified the problem (complete with macro photos of the cracked soldering), so this is hardly an anomoly! All I want is a sign you are taking this seriously.
    Sincerely,
    W.Whatford
    Australia.

I helped my friend fix his 2 year old iBook that had the same problem.
We found information on the probable cause after doing some Google searching on phrases such as "G4 iBook logic board". It was one or 2 solder joints that had gone bad, connecting a chip to the logic board. It's a 28 pin chip, the Intersil ISL6225 power controller, the suspect pin is most likely #28 and maybe adjacent pins, and maybe #1. If you search around you can find more information.
We decided to try to fix it ourselves. We partly disassembled the iBook to the point where we could remove the bottom half of the white plastic shell case. You can find WWW guides on doing this. We used an old 35mm camera lens reversed to act as a high-powered magnifying glass to study the chip pin solder joints. Using a small soldering iron we attempted to re-solder one of the pins, which appeared to have come loose possibly due to repeated on/off heating cycles or a cold solder joint. We just reheated the suspect solder joints and did not add new solder, as this was the advice on another forum. However the iBook still had the same problem afterward and pin 28 seemed to be loose, although it is difficult to see, you really need a mucroscope.
Then we decided to take the iBook to a friend who had lots of experience repairing small circuit boards. He used a soldering iron and some solder to re-solder several of the chip pins and then used a special "de-soldering" braid wire to remove the excess solder that was now connecting together some of the chip pins. He heated the chip pins for about 5 seconds and was fairly rough with the board in applying pressure. He told us that these small chips can take more heat than you might expect, and the logic boards are strong and it's pretty hard to damage them by bending them a little or by touching a connection.
We fired up the iBook again and it now works! It has been OK for about a week. We're hoping it will last a few more years, or until the next MacBook becomes too hard to resist.
BTW taking apart and later re-assembling the case is tricky and we ended up scratching it up a little at the joint line (there are downloadable manuals that can help with this). But the iBook was dead before and now it works so it was worth it.

Not the exact same issue. Please create your own thread. However please do the SMC reset at least 3x back to back. It is also  possible you are not doing it correctly, please follow the directions in:https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603

iMac boots to black screen and then shows flashing white square in the top left of the screen. After a few seconds an error message - i assume appears.
    disc0s2 oxe0030005 undefined appears.
Does anyone know what this is?
    Can view HDD using firewire
Can load diagnostic disc and run diagnostics with no errors

The disc0s2 should be your OS X boot volume. Have you tried starting from the Install DVD1? Start from the DVD and when you get to the OS X installer go to Disk Utility in the Utilities menu and select First Aid. Choose the top drive in the left hand column and repair. Repair as many times as necessary until no more repairs are reported. Quit Disk Utility. Then go to Startup Disk in the Utilities menu and choose the OS x volume on your Mac and restart.

I've tried disk utility, but it won't settle for me to choose the hard drive, it kind of sticks and keeps rotating the wheel.
    any ideas anyone?
    please help.

Lots of things you can try - first, try resetting the SMU. Next, boot from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and try to verify and repair your hard drive. If that doesn't work, try running the Apple Hardware Test on one of your install discs.
Also, depending on which model you have, you may be eligible for Apple's power supply or video and power issues.

  • "Connection Lost" on boot + Wake from sleep black screen and racing fans

When my iMac boots, I receive a "Connection Lost" symbol indicating the Bluetooth Mouse, yet Bluetooth is not turned on. How do I get rid of this? I have been having the "wake from sleep" issue for the last few weeks (black screen, racing fans) and wonder if this is somehow related.
I have reset pram, nvram, trashed the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file, unplugged the computer, repaired permissions, etc. to no avail. I have to power down with the power button and reboot every time it goes to sleep. This is getting very annoying. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I used to have a similar problem when I used a Kensington Turbo Mouse Pro (not wireless). The computer would wake from sleep in the wee hours on its own and in the morning it would be so hot I could fry and egg on it. The Mouse was obviously so sensitive that any slight vibration would trigger a signal to the computer and wake it up.
Also I got the connection lost message on startup even though Bluetooth was not turned on. I figured that for some reason the Turbo Mouse was not discovered in the startup process. When this happens the System gives a warning that since no mouse was connected, I would have no way to control the computer and it advised me to turn on a Bluetooth mouse. It would then search for one for a minute or two. I just unplugged the Kensington Mouse and plugged it back in and I would usually get a message informing me that a mouse had been detected and the startup process would continue.
As soon as I substituted a Mighty Mouse for the Kensington Mouse, everything has been just fine since. I also uninstalled the Kensington Mouseworks software and started using USB Overdrive which gives far more options and a far better Mouse feel than the Apple Mouse settings.

  • After errors with disk partition, I removed Windows from my iMac. Now when I start my computer it goes into a black screen and not straight into the Mac area like it used to, unless I hold Alt straight away to give me the option.  Any help?

    Hi,
Sorry, I'm new to the community, so apologies if I'm repeating myself.
OK, so I tried to install Windows Vista onto my iMac with the disk partition.  Everything was going fine and it wasn't until last minute, when it was installed that an error came up saying that this can only be done with Windows 7.  After this error, I couldn't access any errors of my iMac and when I shut down and restarted my computer, it automatically logged into Windows.
So after a panic, I rang Apple Care and the lady helped me log into my apple area, delete Windows from my iMac, and all was restored.
However, now when I shut down my computer and boot it back up, I think my iMac is trying to log into Windows areas that no longer exist.  It loads up a black screen and doesn't move from there.  To log into my Apple area, I have to do the whole process of holding Alt immediately after I switch the power on and access the Mac drive and log in that way.
It's beginning to become a real pain and I'm paranoid this process is going to damage my computer.  Any advice on how to restore logging-in back to it's former glory when I first purchased it?
    Thanks

Solved it.  Thank you very much for that!
