IMac (2007) intermittent power issues

Hi,
I have a 2007 iMac. I am getting intermittent power issues with it.
One day it wont power up at all...and might not power up for a number of weeks. And just when I have given up on it, it will power up and work for a wee while without any issues (including being shutdown nightly). It'll work for a while and then it'll stop working and again it may take a couple of weeks before it'll start working again.
Does anyone have any idea what might be the issue?
any help/advise greatly appreciated.

Hi IsMiseAodh - did you ever determine what the cause of intermittent no response to power was?  I have a iMac with a similar problem.  Thanks!

Have intermittent power problem that has just lately started. If Imac put to sleep via the side bar I sometimes cannot get it to boot up either by using the space bar ( which is how I normally awake it) or by using the power button. The logic board, power supply and the wire for the power supply has just been replaced and the problem has happened again. The iMac has been plugged into a UPS for some time and doesn't appear to be the problem as other items work OK. I can reboot the Imac if I pull the power plug and re-plug whenever the problem has arisen. I can also reboot by shutting the UPS of and the on again. Any thoughts?

    Try resetting PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

  • IMac G5 17" - Power Issue

    Hi,
I have an iMac G5 17" with light sensor, recently it had turned itself off, I went to power it back on and nothing happened.
I have gone through the procedure to reset the SMU and I have also tested another PSU. Capacitors and components appear fine, nothing out of the ordinary.
When iMac is plugged in and power button is pressed, diagnostic LED #2 turns on for a split second, again I have tested this unit on another perfectly working PSU, the original PSU from the unit has also been tested in another G5 iMac left on for a whole day and no issues occurred.
    Can anyone help?

Hi luna-nz and welcome to the forums.
This will probably sound silly , given the tests you have already done, but is there any possibility that the "collar" on the power cord where it enters the machine has become a little displaced? When these computers first came out we were seeing numerous situations where a slightly displaced "collar" could result in sudden power drop outs because the power cord wasn't seating properly.Simply pulling the collar further up the cord, and then making sure the plug itself was firmly seated, would rectify the problem.
A long shot, I'm sure, but worth checking if you are sure the power supply unit itself is not the issue.
There were also some situations where the power switch itself could fail, leading to sudden power drop outs and difficulty restarting. To test this, if you have access to another identical iMac (as it appears you do) , you could simply try swapping the backs on the two machines.
    Cheers

  • IMac G5 Intermittent power shutdowns?

System has powered off several times over the last few months for no reason? Last night it powered off and when I powered it back on the "FAN" was running at a very high speed and was loud. I reset the SMU and that solved the fan issue for now but I have concerns over the power supply. Anyone having these problems?
    Thanks,
    Jack

Mine did the same thing a few months ago. Took it into Apple authorized repair shop and turned out to be a problem with the power supply internally. Got a new part and it went within a week or so. Got a second part (warranty on the 1st part so no charge) and so far so good. Total repair cost $150US.

  • SBS 2008 and Exchange 2007 intermittent Email Issues

    Hello
I am having an issue with my SBS 2008 Server and Exchange 2007.  After setup, the mail seems to work great for about a week, then the mail just quits working.  To get it working again, all I have to do is reboot the server and mail starts working
again.  When looking in the event logs, all I come across is transport.exe errors.  Any ideas on why it works for 5-10 days, then just quits working?  Any help or insight would be much appreciated.
    Thanks All

  • IMac 2007 start-up issue

A while back our iMac suddenly froze after working perfectly for years. We crashed it and when we attempted to re-boot it couldn't complete start-up. The computer still chimes and begins its process but it goes to a white screen before reaching the User login. We can still access the computer's HD fine through firewire. A repair place said the motherboard is gone and needs replacing at a cost of $2500 (obviously not worth it).
So before I consider the computer as parts only or landfill, can someone please confirm to me that it is possible that the motherboard dies and Firewire still works absolutely fine? Because I find myself questioning the diagnosis... And wondering whether it could still be saved. Its running Snow Leopard. Thanks so much for any assistance.

Hi Mike - I am now writing from my 'Dead' computer! Thanks again so much. I tried all your suggestions and they didn't exactly work but the results gave me enough hope to keep researching other things I could try.
I would like all the Apple Community (especially in NZ) to know that I took my ill computer that wouldn't complete start-up to Mac specialists 'The Core' in Newmarket. They spent a few minutes with it, diagnosed a failed motherboard, quoted $2500 to fix it - and showed my Dad (aka my courier on the day) some nice shiny new iMacs.
I have now managed to fix the computer myself (a woman with hardly any computer knowledge), by making a carbon copy clone of a similar iMac (smaller screen, similar specs), and replacing this hard-drive with the bootable clone of the other iMac.
Obviously the motherboard was NOT the problem. I'll be phoning The Core next week to let them know what I think of their 'service'.
I encourage everyone with a sick computer to do their own research, ask lots of questions, and if you can't find a way to fix it yourself then take it to some place with an excellent reputation.

  • Unable to Troubleshoot Power Issues on Mac mini 2011

I have been having odd and intermittent power issues with my Mac mini 2011 and could really use some help before I resign myself to taking it into an Apple Store. It's under warranty, but I now live in another country so I hope I don't need to ship it should it come down to that.
However, I have searched this topic a lot, and not only have I tried troubleshooting it, I haven't seen any power issues with other owners of this model. That leads me to think that the power supply itself is probably OK.
First of all, I live in China and the building I live in seems to have a questionable power supply. The air conditioner for example simply would not work and the repairman spent two hours messing around with wires inside the outlet and in the breakers. That did the trick, so I wonder if I'm simply not getting enough juice?
    Main symptoms:
    - My monitor recognizes an analog signal but will not light up (black monitor). Unplugging and replugging adaptor doesn't do anything.
    - Startup Keyboard Commands (e.g. Cmmd-R) may work, but I can't tell because the monitor won't light up. Letting the computer boot up though I can hear keyboard volume keys and such making the standard sounds. I can usually restart using the keyboard too.
    - My 2T external HD more often than not dismounts as well.
    - I can't hear any computer activity after the chime (hard drive, etc.).
    - Since I can hear the chime and there is audio feedback through the keyboard, I think that eliminates hardware problems such as logic board failure or bad RAM.
    - I can't boot even if I unplug all USB peripherals.
    - Holding down the power button (I have it set to make the computer sleep as well as shut down) often won't shut down the computer, but it seems to stay in sleep no matter how long I hold it. Unplugging the computer finally shuts it down, obviously.
    - Unplugging and waiting 5 minutes or so and powering up again doesn't seem to make any difference, nor does switching sockets, plugging directly into the wall, etc.
Problems began about two weeks ago, got better, and then worse again. Now I'm just keeping the computer and monitor on (never sleep 24/7).
Miraculously, after much frustration and countless restarts, suddenly the screen will turn on to reveal a fully booted system that was running all along in the background. No startup screen- the monitor just magically comes on again. Often I find that my external has unmounted, but it's no big deal to get to remount. At this stage, the Mac is still very quiet and for a while the system is sluggish, though it hops back into action in 5 or 10 minutes.
At first I thought it was just my monitor, and though that's possible I suppose, it seems I'm just not getting enough juice. Once the monitor is on though, everything is fine: I can power it off and on with no problems. But I can't just leave my computer on forever though.
    Any help appreciated.

Well, with the other monitor (which did not work with the mini either but worked fine on a laptop), I was able to narrow the trouble spot down to either a faulty Mini Display to VGA adaptor or a damaged port. I could determine that all the other ports (incld. the USB drive, programs, internet, etc., were all working fine behind the big black GUI all through sound feedback, so I seriously doubted it could be a supply problem or a residential electric problem.
I took my mini and adaptor to a "Mac Shop" (reseller) here in China, and found it quite professional, just like a Mac Store. They tested my machine, and although they didn't have VGA monitors, they said I could return the new $30 USD adaptor if it didn't work. But as I'm writing this on the monitor now, the new adaptor did the trick.
The long and short of all this is that I've read a lot about display problems with the mini and I suspect that most of these problems are adaptor related. I myself tried to save some bucks by buying a third party plug and lived and learned. I hope the Apple adaptor works like a champ, and if it doesn't, I'll know the first thing to eliiminate next time.

  • 2007 Intel iMac with sleep/wake issues

    Subject: 2007 Intel iMac, 2GHz, 4GB RAM, 10.5.6
I'm having difficulty troubleshooting this one and would greatly appreciate any advice/help. Basically this iMac will develop all kinds of problems over night. It will be put to sleep in the evening and in the morning it will be off or it won't wake from sleep. I don't think it's a power issue, as other computers aren't affected.
If you manually turn it off and then on again, it won't recognize the startup volume. Usually at this point nothing will work except Diskwarrior will find and repair some errors and it will work again for the rest of the day, but come morning, the problems return.
I've replaced the memory, changed all peripherals, completely rebuilt the OS (clean install), even replaced the battery backup unit. I've reset the PRAM and the SMC, ran surface scans on the hard drive, as well as all available tests in Tech Tool and Rember. Nothing found. SMART status is clear.
It seems to only happen over night. If I put it to sleep mid-day, it'll wake just fine, although perhaps there's a difference between that short sleep and its nightly slumber which is the key??
I don't think there's a software issue because the person who uses it basically only uses Mail, Safari, Firefox, and occasionally iWork apps. I'll put the latest crash report in a follow-up post, but I don't quite understand its contents and I'm hoping it will provide a clue which someone can help me with.
Thanks for reading this far - I look forward to any responses!

Here's the latest crash report. It seems to have originated after sunday night's crash, which is why it shows 10.5.4, which was installed by combo update yesterday. Last night's crash doesn't seem to have a report...

  • Power consumption of the iMac 2007

    Hello!
I found at this website: http://www.apple.com/environment/reports/ the reports also for older models of the iMac, but not for mine.
Can someone eventual tell me the power consumption of the iMac 2007 24" in standby- ond off-mode? Or is there an older report from Apple available somewhere?
    Best Regards!

It's going to fall somewhere between the idle of 92W and the maximum of 310W.  I would aim at around 210-230W.
I run mine on a APC 1500 pro which provides about 15 minutes at 400W.  I have other devices on it as well.
I would think at a minimum something like below.  This would only provide about 8 Minutes at 300W

  • 1st Gen iMac G5 - no power warranty ?

I have a first generation iMac G5, and my serial number falls into the ranges cover by the iMac G5 Repair Extension Program for Video and Power Issues.
My issue is that I've already had my global logic board replaced under this warranty, and now my iMac is not functioning again. I've already tried the SMU reset button, and I also followed the directions found in the help article "iMac G5: Troubleshooting when your computer won't turn on", and my out come was:12. Press the internal power button to start up the computer. Does LED 2 come on momentarily, or not at all?* Momentarily: The logic board has detected power, but the power supply cannot maintain it. Your power supply needs to be replaced. If you have an iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor) computer, you can order a replacement power supply here and then install it yourself. If you have any other iMac G5 computer, contact your local Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for service.
    * Not at all: Your logic board needs to be replaced. Please contact your local Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for service.
I suppose my primary concern is if my iMac is still covered, or am I going to have to pay for this repair? The iMac is only 2 years from purchase date, so it does still fall under warranty time-wise. I'm more worried about the previous board replacement voiding my eligibility.

"the repair will be covered by Apple for up to three years from the original date of purchase even if your iMac G5 is out of warranty."

  • G3 imac DV SE power up problem

I've run out of ideas on this one, so any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I have an intermittent power up fault with an imac dv 400Mhz 512Mb RAM.
On powering up via the keyboard or the main front button the power light comes on and stays green but no screen or hard drive noise goes along with it, pulling out the mains and reconnecting usually but not always allows the machine to boot and when it does manage to start up zapping the PRAM causes the machine to shut down.
When trying to install Panther from MacOS 9.2.2 the machine attempts to restart but shuts down and can't be started without difficulty.
The original battery that came out was completely dead and has been replaced with a used one that has good voltage.
The only other thing that sometimes makes a difference is disconneting the keyboard and powering up from the main switch.
I have reset the PMU, and upgraded the firmware and checked the logic board voltages J9,C10 and the J7 pins and all seem very close to the required outputs (how close do they need to be?) the only thing I haven't checked yet is the F901 fuse.
Is it likely that the PAV board is kaputt? or that the keyboard is causing the problems?
I'd really like to try and get this running as I use an identical machine upgraded with a 120Gb disc and 1Gb RAM running Tiger at my workplace that runs beautifully so I think it is worth trying to fix.
Or shall I give up on it?
G3 Imac DV SE   Mac OS X (10.3.4)

If it consistently works with the keyboard detached, I'd switch keyboards with that other iMac to see if that's the cause. I would also buy a "new" battery instead of trying to re-use a used one. Another good test is to try it with one 256MB module at a time, to see of if one of them is faulty. Sometimes, RAM modules that worked fine with Mac OS 9 do not work with Mac OS X.

  • I have OsX 10.6.8, and imac 2007-08, and enough disk space to download yosemite but still Apple tells something is wrong and generates a list of maybes but not a specific reason. Any ides as to how to pin point the problem of the upgrade?

Want to upgrade from 10.6.8 to yosemite  and I have a imac 2007, and enough disk space. but when trying to download, I get a "I can't" due to a list of possible issues, but how to isolate the problem?
    Thanks,
    josefromaptos

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
    Application Compatibility
    Applications Compatibility (2)
    Do a backup before installing.
If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again.  You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program.

  • Imac g5 - burned power inverter?

I have one of those so called troubled Imacs with a video issue.  Video eventually went to an intense plaid like pattern but compter itself ran great. I inspected all capacitors, even the ones in the power supply and they all look perfect. I took the power inverter that feeds power to the monitor and flipped it over and saw a small area of the circuit board discolored and burned. Its where a series of 6 black wires plug into the board. I have pictures to show (see links). Any suggestions here would be great as it is an older mac and I dont want to be spending additional money at guessing the problem.

Do mac techs reply to these forums?
No. We are all just fellow Mac users who volunteer their assistance here.
13 views and not a peep!!!
None of them, including me, knows the answer, but it would seem that you need a new mother board.
Better still, a newer Mac, as that would cost you about 75% of the price of a new Mac.
