IMac 2011 Spring - SSD Drive - Shipping

I want to buy my new iMac with a SSD Drive, but, if i click it, ship goes from 4 days to 4-6 weeks? How can it be? I have to wait 6 weeks!? For only an SSD?

Luxamor wrote:
When I called Apple and asked why there was a 4-6 week delay caused by an SSD order, the rep said it was because they had to install a different type of motherboard (?) . So I ordered the 2 TB drive and decided to take advantage of the future Thunderbolt capabilities instead.
I just talked to a rep that said the same, but when I asked why, he said because the SSD was like a Macbook Air, it's built into the motherboard!!!
Is this a good thing? I'm not so sure! what if it fails when out of warranty, omg, the repair cost would be through the roof! Plus upgradability would be completely shot in the foot!
ARRGgg!!!  The rep I talked to was with the business group division, not sure if that would make any difference on validity of his statement.
Can anyone confirm this? If so I may well cancel and get the standard w/o and look to upgrade it later.

  • Why is my iMac Start up SSD Drive filling up without any use?

I noticed yesterday that my main boot drive, my SSD drive, on my iMac was seriously depleting in memory without me doing anything or downloading anything either so much so that but 10pm last night it was saying my start up drive was full. I ran Disk Utility on the drive and it said I had a problem and should run in Recovery HD so rebooted the computer and ran it, it said it had fixed permissions so thought all was okay but after rebooting again the memory is still running down!
I also tried erasing the disk and using Time Machine as a back up from a previous time, this had no effect. I thought it could be a Snow Leopard update that came in yesterday but that doesn't seem to be the problem as I have used a back up from before I updated...
I'm literally watching the 'Used' numbers from the Get Info on my SSD drive go up infront of my eyes every few seconds.
Any help would be much appriciated!

In your Mountain Lion's Time Machine settings, you are now allowed to designate not just one only, but multiple Time Machine backup drives, though you don't have to.  I'm wondering if possibly your TM settings are backing up one of your internal hard drives both to your external hard drive AND to the internal SSD drive.  You might want to check to see if that is the case, and if so, change it.
    Hope this helps

  • Switching from MBP to iMac with 2nd SSD drive

    Hi, all.
I'm thinking of the possibility of upgrading my 2007 MBP to an iMac running Logic 9. What's impressed me is the BTO option with the quad-core models where they add a second SSD drive for the OS plus the 1 or 2 TB hard drive at 7200 rpm. I currently have a Glyph hard drive for samples, audio and backups. I know it's expensive and many people aren't using SSD's, but would that be a good way to go if I put all my samples (BFD2, Omnisphere, Trilian, etc.) on the 7200 rpm hard drive and backup stuff to my Glyph? This would free up my Firewire bus for the Duet so that I can put the Glyph on a USB port to backup stuff.
I'd like an answer ASAP on this, please.
    Thanks,
    Damian.

Sounds solid to me. If the Glyph was connected on a firewire port that is. This would free up the bandwith that way but actually it is hardly an issue with the Duet considering the limited inputs. But using the Glyph as a backup for your projects is good wise idea anyway.

  • IMac G4, is SSD drive worth using in it?

Basically I'm wondering if there would be any benefit using an SSD over a mechanical drive.  I have a Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB 5400 RPM and a ocz agility 3.  Besides the difference in sound, would both of these perform the same?

Hi, if you can find a compatable SSD and SATA->IDE adapter, you would notice a small speed increase, less in 10.4.11 than 10.5.8, & much of the increase will be eaten up by the slow Bus speed, most noticeable would be Boot times likely.

  • Editing on an OS/Applications SSD Drive?

I know that with hard drives you are always supposed to edit video on a drive separate from your OS/applications drive. I just got a new iMac with a SSD drive that I am using for the OS and applications. Can I edit 1920x1080 video direclty on this SSD drive OR should I still do this on a separate drive?
    Thanks.

This is geared toward a different market, but there's lots of useful information about optimizing your system here:

  • Will the new 2012 iMac support 2 hard drives (HDD and SSD) like the 2011 iMac?

Will the new 2012 iMac support 2 hard drives (HDD and SSD) like the 2011 iMac?

Well, I'm not sure how anything can fit into a 5 mm depth, so I can see why they've removed the CD drive -  there probably wouldn't be enough room for the laser, LOL. Can't imagine speakers, hard drive (of any flavor), logic board and so on and so forth. Fortunately, my iMac has Applecare through early 2015 so I'm set for a while; I may check out a Mini at that point - saw that it is configurable with a fusion drive, which would make it interesting for me.

  • IMac 2011 + Intel 510 SSD Performance

Yesterday I installed Intel`s SSD 510 (120GB) in my iMac 2011 27 inch (along with a 2TB WD Caviar black)
Today I did some testing and the results are somehow disappointing.
It would be great if other owners of Intel`s 510 can post some benchmark results! Here is mine:
    Tested with AJA:
    Write: 131,3
    Read: 174,4
    720x486 8-bit and 128mb file size
    The 510 in system profiler:
    Finally: xbench
The results should be WAY higher!?
Does anybody have a hint what I did wrong?

How did you manage to get the SSD and the 2TB drive in your new Imac? OWC said you couldn't update those internal parts. I am too looking to get an Imac 27" but I want to add my own SSD and 2TB drive similar to what you did. did you buy the imac with this set up already from apple? do you have to get the SSD/Harddrive combo from apple to have the parts needed for the replacement? thanks in advance.

  • How do I perform maintenance  on my iMac SSD Drive so I can extend it's life

I recently purchased a Mid 2011 27" 3.4GHZ i7 /16GB Memory iMac and would like to know how do I perform maintenance  on my iMac SSD Drive so I can extend it's life, Does apple now support Trimm or is there some thing else I need to do? Defrag?  I do not store anything thing but OS and APPS on the drive
    thanks

There is nothing you need to do to the SSD. Do not attempt to defrag an SSD as there is no need and uses the device excessively. TRIM is supported only if the SSD is an Apple device so if you reformat the SSD there's no need to Zero Data for garbage collection.

  • Original SSD kit for apple iMac 27 2011 or OWC SSD Apple 27" iMac 2011 Modell

is it better to use Origina SSD kit Cable for Upgrade the 27 2011 iMac with a samsung pro SSD? or i can use OWC cable. is there a differece ?  the Origina SSD from apple is 2.5 tims more Expensive then the OWC cable.

Difficult to say without seing the machine.   It sounds as if you installed the SSD drive yourself.  If that is the case you may have voided the guarantee and Apple Care extended warranty.
If Apple installed the drive, all should be well.   Apple hardware and work usually carries a 12 month guarantee.

  • Imac ssd drive upgrade

Hi there...  I have a mid-2011 iMac.  I have maxed it with RAM and have a have a 7200 rpm HD in it.  I use this for shoots using Capture software where the camera is tethered either using FireWire or USB2 connections.  After a long day the computer begins to slow down, often crashing, even using the so-called 64-bit enabled software.  I have been told that if i had an SSD drive to run my operating system and my spinning drive as a write-drive, this would speed-up and stabilize my workflow significantly.  My question is whether or not i can now get Apple to perform an additional installation of an SSD drive?
If any of you have been through the same / similar process, i would love to hear about it...
    Thanks!
    Simon

I think whoever is offering you advice is mistaken and I would recommend you run Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitory), the next time you see a slow down look in Activity Monitor and see if there are any processes that are using a lot of CPU cycles. That will be listed as %CPU.
Also you mentioned you have maxed out the RAM so I'm assuming that means you have 16GB, is that correct? While you are in Activity Monitor click the System Memory tab and look to see how much FREE RAM you have. It will look similar to:
Finally no Apple will not install a SSD into your machine however you may be able to locate an AASP that will. While a SSD will improve
    startup times
    application launch times
    shutdown times
times when you have a lot of IO to storage
for most day to day work you will not see improvement.

  • How do I install an ssd drive in a iMac?

I have 2 iMacs.  One is 21" 2007 the other is 27" 2009.  Can either accept a 120GB SSD drive?  How do I intstall it and make it my primary drive?

Yes, but it means some disassembly so you should search Google for articles on it.
For all Macs you set the startup drive using the Startup Disk preferences. Obviously, you must have installed OS X on a device to make it bootable.

  • (Mac Mini mid-2011) Installing an SSD drive as a replacement of the HDD

    Hey all,
I just got myself a Crucial M500 240GB SSD drive for my mid-2011 Mac Mini. I intend to replace the standard hard drive with this one.
Here are a couple of thigs that are still unclear to me :
    - what will happen when I first boot my Mini after I replaced the HDD with the SSD ? As of now, this drive is in stock state, I guess not even formatted and empty.
    - how will I be able to make a fresh install of Mavericks ? I made a bootable Mavericks install usb stick, but haven't found out a way yet to boot on it (I have a wireless Apple keyboard, and holding the cmd key when booting won't pop any disk manager)
Any further details on how I should proceed are appreciated, thanks !

    Hi,
First off, thanks for taking the time to answer.

You have to hold the Alt key while your computer is starting up in order to show all bootable partitions, so you will be able to choose the OS X Mavericks installer flash drive.
Then, format the SSD with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
In case you want to clone your HDD to the SSD, you can use the Restore feature in Disk Utility to do it. Get a USB to SATA adapter, connect the HDD and follow these steps with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html Choose your HDD as "Source" and the SSD as "Destination". When you have finished, restart and disconnect your HDD.
Just so you know, what I'm trying to do is a fresh install of Mavericks, from scratch. I do not want to clone the install I'm running know on my standard HD.
I tried to use several keyboard combinason without any luck. I Googled that and found out that this is normal behaviour on a Mac with a wireless keyboard. How am I supposed to get into recovery mode then ?
    Thanks !

I have a MAC Pro from 2011 currently running MAC OS 10.9.5.  This weekend I cloned the MAC HD drive to a new SSD drive for improved performance.  The clone was completed successfully with no errors.  After the clone completed I successfully restarted my system using the SSD as the boot device.  I then successfully tested all of my products, including Photoshop CS6 and all of its plug-ins.  I successfully tested the key features that I frequently use.  Today while attempting to launch Photoshop CS6 a message is being displayed indicating that a scratch disk cannot be found.  All drives are available on the system via the Finder and Disk Utility.  I can access all drives including the old MAC HD which is no longer the boot device.  I've even attempted to launch Photoshop from the old device yet the same error persist.  Is there a way to review/edit/change Photoshop preferences if Photoshop doesn't launch?  I've even restarted my system several times to see if that would resolve the issues.  Does anyone have any recommendations for this issue?  Have you previously address this issue?
    Thank you Gregg Williams

  • I'd like to carry my system, applications and files on a portable Thunderbolt ssd drive and boot from it.  I have a Mac Pro in the office, iMac at home

I'd like to carry my system, applications and files on a portable Thunderbolt ssd drive and boot from it.  I have a Mac Pro in the office, iMac at home, a MacBook Air for when I'm on the road, all with TB.  Can a single external TB drive boot all three hardware configurations successfully?  I've been told that differences in hardware configurations between the systems make this impossible.  Is this correct?

Piece or peace of cake really though.
A quick install on new hard drive or SSD or 10K and less than an hour to move everything over properly.
YOU looked for a quick fix and found none and all the brick walls.
It is not  days of work to do a clean install and migrate.
There are few if any apps that need to be freshly installed either though there are updates needed for them to be compliant, any driver or plugin also and that is done ahead of time with research.
And your backup or clone of your system is taken care of - you leave the old system boot drive 'as is' untouched.
Also, better strategy to move most all your home folder (except for its own ~/Library) to ANOTHER disk drive and not on t he system drive at all.
As for applications on its own drive or 3rd party, beeen there done that, even SSD or 15K SCSI - no benefit in performance or organization.
