IMac 20in makes three beeps and fails to boot?

I have just changed the hard drive on my previously working 20in Intel iMac. The drive was pre-formatted and loaded with Mountain Lion using an external dock. The computer functions when fire-wired to another iMac, showing the doners desktop. Now I hear three intermittant beeps when pressing the start button on the 20in iMac. The screen remains dark. (It is assembled, but I have not fitted the aluminium front bezel or the glass yet). It does not respond to any keyboard commands. The memory moduls have been re-inserted firmly. Help please?

Sounds like a RAM problem:
Beeps on startup:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images.
5 beeps = processor is not usable

  • IMac gives three beeps and freezes

My neighbour's iMac starts and runs normally most of the time, but periodically when running emits three beeps and then freezes. This is NOT the usual "three beeps at startup" indicating a RAM problem, but whilst the machine is is actually being used.
Can't seem to find anything about this anywhere. Any ideas, anyone?
(The logic board was replaced very soon after purchase as the machine had all sorts of problems . . .)

My imac mid 2010 worked fine with "new" memory for 6 months, then started hanging in mid-session - meaning it froze and beeped loudly hours or days after it booted OK. Put old memory back in and noticed it ran more smoothly with less memory than more. Put the "new" memory back in and ran memtest for days and days; no problems reported. But, the system still froze after I'd been working for a while - at odd times. So, took the "new" memory back to the store, and, while there, upgraded to (more expensive) Crucial brand memory - just to be on the "safer" side. Put the replacement memory in and my imac has never run better - not even when new. So far, my imac is quieter, cooler, and smoother now than since the day I bought it. Thought I'd post this on this old thread because Apple Care had told me to bring the machine to them for three days of testing - per other posts I'd seen on the net. But, that would have been a complete waste of time - since they'd wind up (with the old memory) telling me "no problem," or, (with the "new" memory,) "it's a non-apple part problem." Meanwhile, bad memory can mean bad writes to your hard drive; mine seems fine, but I generally pay close attention to problems and fix them asap, or, sooner. If you wait until you have additional problems, you may spend a lot more time and money getting things finally done - and you may wind up back at "square one" or worse if you trash your drive and it's contents.

  • IBook G4 makes 3 beeps and nothing else...

When I try to boot up my old iBook G4 it makes three beeps, the white sleep light flashes a few times and then nothing happens. The screen never lights up. It is plugged into a wall socket.
Is the computer just dead? Or can I boot up in a different mode?
What do the three beeps mean? Is it a death knell?
    Thanks for any information!!

If you do not feel confident following the process involved then just take it straight to a competent Apple tech or SIG.
Swap out or borrow a compatible RAM stick to see if that makes a difference. You do not have to fully restore the keyboard, but beware of the metal backing frame that may angle down onto internal components.
If all the above reveals no change, then a full diagnostic by an Apple tech is your only likely saviour.

  • Turning ipod shuffle on, it sounds three beeps and thats it.

Turning on ipod shuffle, 4 gen., it sounds three beeps, that's it. nothing else happens.

    JDee -
It does seem I was prematurely expecting a logic board failure - guess it's the bad side of my 'hope for the best, prepare for the worst' philosophy.
I followed the instructions you linked to and removed the RAM module (I only have a 1GB one) from the lower slot and placed it into the upper slot and booted up the PB. And voilá - I got the chime and it booted up just fine (actually, a bit quicker than it used to...). So i decided to back up all my data (as it was a month or so since the last one) before the next step - shutting down, opening the memory access panel, and shifted the module back to the lower slot, while making sure it was pressed in firmly. And it worked.
So it seems all that happened was that the RAM module got loose - which would make sense as the problem occurred shortly after i moved my laptop downstairs to write some emails while watching the telly (TV).
Now I'll wait for a few days to see if everything has sorted itself out (just to be on the safe side), and then think about adding that second 1GB memory module i've been thinking about for some time...
Thanks for the advise and the cool head!
    Cheers,
    Mika

  • Lenova Think pad makes 8 beeps and screen wont turn on

I have a black lenova thinkpad laptop and once in a while when i turn on the laptop, it makes 8 beeping noises and the screen wont turn on at all but it sounds like the laptop is on. I have tried fixing this by keeping the laptop in the fridge for a day because i think it was becaue it was over heated. Once i take it out, it works perfectly fine. But when it happens again it eally gets on my nerves and it sometimes happens at poor times when i actually NEED to use my laptop. This has happened probably over 12 times now. I have no idea how laptops work or what the different parts of them are called. So if there is a solution, please explain it in a simple manner. Thank you!

    Hello and welcome,
Please tell us what model laptop you have.  The Hardware Maintenance Manual for you laptop probably has a "beep code" section that may help narrow down the situation.
For example. if a T420 emits One short beep, pause, three short beeps, pause, three
more short beeps, and one short beep. It can be a memory module or the system board.
The beep codes may be common to all ThinkPads (I'm not sure...) but it would be good to look up the documentation specific to your machine.

  • IMac blank screen & three beeps!

Since I received my iMac I have had issues with it not waking up using the Apple Bluetooth keyboard or trackpad.  As I was downloading Lion yesterday the screen went blank and the iMac started beeping three times in a row, this happened twice more during the installation process.  The only way to stop it beeping was to force a shut down by holding down the power button.  I have run Techtool Pro 5 and it says there's nothing wrong with my RAM.
Are the two incidences related or do I have a faulty Bluetooth module and a faulty graphics card or RAM?
    Please help!

  • My apple i mac wont start as normal   it makes three beeping sounds

my apple I mac 2009 won't start up normally   it makes three loud beeps

Remove and reinsert the computer's RAM. If that doesn't work, use different modules.
If that only happens when you try to boot the computer to a specific Mac OS X version, it's too old.

  • Restored 10.6 OS from CD and fails to Boot after Combo upgrade

I have a clean install of Lion on my internal drive and an external clone of the HD from the previous Snow Leopard install. The Clone worked until I updated via the latest auto update. I have App's and other settings to transfer to Lion from this clone so want to get it working so I can ensure all the App's are upgraded to work on Lion or are deleted.
After the external drive failed to boot I reinstalled the system from my Snow Leopard Install CD, not the 24-inch iMac (Mid 2007) restore CD.
I then used Auto updater to install the combo and other updates to 10.6.8 this booted fine until I upgraded Safari 5.1 and Java - the last items that came up on the software updater. Upon restart, the boot failed in the last portion of the boot and at this point the Apple emblem went away and the round circle with diaginoal line apeared.
On starting with the option key down, the clone disk 10.6.8 shows as being available, along with the internal Drive, for booting.
Starting with "command + S" gets through to the last line of the process then states "waiting on Root"
When compaired to a Snow OS that boots OK it is the last line of code before the curser is ready for entering a command.
Can anyone tell me what to look for or how to repair this error so that I can get my data across to Lion. Thanks

Well, in case anyone else has a similar problem I managed to fix the system by the following process:
I reinstalled 10.6.0 from the retail Snow Leopard CD. The drive Booted OK but I needed to be upgraded to 10.6.8 to use the migration tool so I then upgraded using the Software Update utility. Boot failed again at this point and could not be fixed by anything I did.
I then reinstalled 10.6.0 from the CD to try again, but the HD would not boot this time around.
I downloaded CleanApp by Synium Software (http://www.syniumsoftware.com/cleanapp/) on a commendation from the famous eBook, "Take Control of installing Lion" by Joe Kissell of TidBits. I used this from my Lion HD to remove all orphan files, PPC files and Apps, and other junk. Snow Leapard still not Booting after repairs by various disk repair utilities including Apples.
I Booted from my internal HD using Lion and ran SuperDuper to make a new Clone of the failed HD on a second external HD. Took a day and a night to run while I was at work, but the new clone would not boot at this stage so I ran SuperDuper again using the "Smart Update Backup" option. This just adds changed files or missing files to the clone. At the end of this process I had a running Clone that would boot on 10.6.0.
I Booted from the second Clone and used the Software Update utility then to up grade in the two stages the Auto system used to bring my OS up to 10.6.8. This was successful and I had a Bootable Snow Leopard with no old Apps from which to Migrate my data.

  • Random I/O errors (hdd) and failing to boot, Windows not affected

I'm experiencing lots of I/O errors when booting and running my Linux partition. I am dual booting Windows 7 (x86_64) and Arch Linux (i686) on a single HDD.
Im using a Lenovo Ideapad G505s with a Seagate ST1000LM HDD and an SDD currently not in use.
    Partition layout:
    NAME FSTYPE LABEL UUID MOUNTPOINT
    sda
    ├─sda1 ntfs System Reserved D8B40750B4073094
    ├─sda2 ntfs 00EA107FEA107360
    └─sda3 ext3 b753e7d2-6a23-4c20-8fa7-bf281a4a09e4 /
    sr0
All three are primary partitions. Using ext4 yields the exact same result.
The problem is easy to reproduce:
Install Windows 7 to first half of HDD and Arch on the second half
At first Arch works fine but over the next couple of days increasingly more I/O errors show up and at some point the system fails to boot
Windows seems to work just fine

I think I wil take the emergency procedure, and start backing up my files and system ...
I don't recall when this error first showed up, and I unluckily deleted my journal before noticing the problem, for it was getting big, so I can't trace back. But I have it in the journal since then (11.september). At begining only from time to time, but now things are getting worse.

  • MacBook beeping and no longer booting OS X after Boot Camp

So yesterday I used Boot Camp (under 10.5.3) to install Windows XP onto my Mac. I installed it following the exact instructions from Apple. However I was having problems installing the drivers. The install would always hang and never go anywhere. So I restarted and tried to boot to OS X, but it would just hang at the grey startup screen. No Apple logo or anything.
So I went back to Windows and got the drivers to work eventually. However my Macbook started making a weird beeping noise. It is very faint, almost sounds like a PC speaker on old DOS boxes. I had read that it might be harddrive related and ran a test from Disk Utility on the Leopard CD.It came up with no errors. By the way the beep happens under the Leopard CD when running Disk Utility, under Windows, and when trying to boot to OS X, so I think it's beyond the OS level.
Does anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for that clarification ...perhaps it's either the drive or the fan? Those are the only two moving parts that might produce a mechanical sound (and the optical drive as well). Perhaps even a weird vibration? There used to be problems with CPU whine, but that wasn't something that you'd hear as loud as what you're describing. I'd bring it in to your Apple tech. for a check over.

  • GF615M-P33 - 3 beeps and it wont boot (black screen)

Moved to https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=133091.0 with more information
    Thanks

    Hi there!
My computer broke down a couple of week's ago and i have been using my laptop meanwhile.
Now i finally got some new parts to my computer.
    So the current computer:
    AMD Athlon X2 250, 3,0 ghz, AM3, 2MB, 65W
    MSI GF615M-P33, Socket-AM3, m-ATX, GeForce 6150se, DDR3, SATA II, GbLAN, PCI-Ex16
    Sahpire Radeon HD 4670 512MB GDDR3 PCI-Express 2.0, DVI-I, native-HDMI, HDCP, Lite-Retail
    Kingston ValueR. DDR3 1333MHz 4GB, CL9, Kit w/two Matched ValueRAM 2GB DDR3
    Samsung HD501LJ, 500GB, 7200rpm, 16M
Windows XP Pro 32 bit, right now, will upgrade later to Windows 7 Ultimate.
    Huntkey Delcato PSU-422 450W DC Output: "+5V=35A(RED), 12V1=15A(YELLOW), +3.3V=30A(ORANGE), +12V2=17A(YELLOWBLACK), -12V=0.5A(BLUE), +5Vsb=2.0A(PURPLE), PG(GREY)
So the problem is that when i inserted all of my components and then just went to boot it, it gave me 3 beeps and a black screen.
My flatmate has the same motherboard and i tried the RAM, CPU and Video card on it, and it worked fine with one beep and i got a screen and came to BIOS.
I tried his RAM, CPU and Video Card on my motherboard and it still gave me 3 beeps and no screen.
So i have no clue how to troubleshoot anymore.
Tell me if you need anymore information
    Please help me!
    Thanks in advance!!
