IMac 21,5 2010 3,06GHz Second screen no max resolution

Hi there,
I have an iMac 21,5 3,06Ghz 2010-model. And an LG Flatron w2261VP. I want to connect this LG to my iMac, but when i do it gives a max res. of 1600x1200. This is not the native res. for this screen, the native one is 1920x1080. But when i select the 1600x1200 the screen goes black and says "out of range". However, when i connect the LG screen to my MacBook Pro 13" 2010 the screen automatically uses the 1920x1080 resolution and works flawlessly.. The resolutions i can select on my imac for my LG are: 640x480, 800x600, 1012x768, 1152x870, 1280x768, 1280x960, 1280x1024, 1344x1008, 1400x1050 and 1600x1200
I'm currently using the 1400x1050, can't select the higher one; screen goes "out of range"
I use a mini-displayport to VGA adapter.
My question is: Is it even possible to use a second screen with my iMac? Why does it work with my MacBook Pro and not with my iMac? Is it a bug? Do i need a DVI of HDMI? Anyone else suffering this problem?
Your help is very much appreciated!

Are both in Extended Desktop Mode?

  • IMac 27" mid-2010 as a second screen

    Hi,
I recently got a MacBook Pro Retina 13" (2015) and I would like to use my iMac 27" (mid-2010) as a second screen.
I already tried it by using a HDMI to Mini DisplayPort cable but it didn't work.
So I've checked on the Internet and as stated in this forum thread (Macbook pro 2014 connect to imac 27 2010), I need to use a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable and since the Thunderbolt port on my MacBook Pro should handle it.
So I hope someone can confirm me this solution will work.
    Thank you by advance.

    It's correct.

  • IMac constantly falls a sleep in dual screen setup

    Hi all,
    I have this crazy thing.
iMac and thunderbolt display are a pain and I think the latest OSX update has something to do with it.
While working the iMac goes in sleep mode and second screen stays up. I can't wake it up unless I force whole system a sleep and wake it up again.
    Realy annoying.
Hopefully someone has had this and knows a fix for it.
    many thanks

You can use the iMac as a second display, not the other way around.

This is an old problem I once ran into, but it's completely unrelated to SP1 which is the purpose of this thread.

can I add a second screen to my 09 iMac?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course. Just get a monitor and the Mini DisplayPort adapter you need to connect the Mac to the monitor. I recommend you to use HDMI if the monitor uses it. Also, you can connect it to a TV. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241

  • Using iMac (Intel) as second screen.

Is it possible to easily use an older iMac as a second screen to a new MacBook Pro?
This would obviously save the cost of purchasing a new monitor.
    Thanks for any advice/instructions/rulings.

Short answer is no. You need a late 2009 or later iMac to use Target Display Mode Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Macbook pro 2012 as second screen for imac 2013 via thunderbolt cable

    Hello,
I was wondering wether it is possible to use my macbook as a second screen for my imac using a thunderbolt cable.
I want to use my imac as primary mac because the specs are better.
    Thanks

Most new monitors will support standard DVI and VGA connections. Some may support Mini-DVI ports. That's about all I can tell you.
As for other factors I would look at monitor reviews - as many as you can - for the size and resolutions in which you are interested. There are a lot of products out there. You might try first doing a Google search to learn more about the meanings of the various specs the manufacturers provide so you might wade through the smoke and mirrors in search of meaningful information.

  • Sometimes my iMac starts with white lettering across the screen on a black ground and after switching off for a few seconds starts on ok ! Any ideas

Sometimes my iMac starts up with white lettering acrossthe screen on a black background - when it's switched off for a few seconds it starts up ok. Can anyone tell me why this happens ?

I have read on here that a PRAM reset can cure this problem:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

iMac G5 (iSight) with 10.4.11:  Screen always dimmed. Starts at full bright and a second later dimms and stays like that forever.  Brightness controls work normally under this circunstance.  Please help !!!
Please don't tell me to adjust anything on the preferences, since I have tried all.  I think it may be anoter kind of problem, maybe hardware related or anything.
I ran the Hardware repair DVD and everything was ok, but when the imac restarted the screen was very lit again, but when it went sleep, when it went awake again the screen got dimmed again.  Because of that I think that the problem could be software related, but who knows.  Excuse my english.

I can't see another possible answer - the longer your machine is up, the more the power supply is stressed, it protects itself by dimming the screen to lower the draw on it.

  • MacBook Pro - iMac as second screen

    Hi everybody,
I was wondering if I could connect my MacBook Pro to a iMac so that I can use the iMac as a second screen? I read something about a firewire cable...
    Thanks in advance

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
the thing with the firewire cable is called Target Mode and is used to access a second Mac with a first Mac in order to transfer files and/or troublshooting.

  • Make iMac G4 into a Second screen & Harddis?

I´ve searched all over the internet, but can´t find that question.
Is this possible? Not only to drag and drop, etc but to be used as if it was a second screen.
    Maju

You can use this clever program to make it pretend to be a second screen for another Mac.
    http://www.screenrecycler.com/home.html
assuming the iMac G4 runs normally and can run a "VNC client" program. It works over a network connection using the VNC (screen sharing) protocol.
For the "drag and drop" part, over that same network connection, you can do File Sharing to access the iMac's hard drive from the other Mac.

I downloaded Lion on my iMac (i7 mid 2010) and my Apple applications show up in the first Launchpad screen in two folders titled "Utilities". How can I fix this? At first I didn't think they were there.

Click the Utilities icon/folder to see the contents and then drag the items out of the folder upwards onto the Desktop and they will be removed from the folder.

  • Video Memory 128 or 256 ? Second screen would works on an iMac ?

I'm planning to buy an iMac 20". Here are my questions :
    1) I would want to play to X-plane. Is there really a difference between 128Mo and 256Mo on tha ATI ?
    2) Is it possible to plug a second flat screen on an iMac ?
    3) (Is an iMac really worth spending $1500 ?)
    Regards.

I can't answer #1 because I am not a gamer although I would guess that the 256 ATI would work better after all it is a better card. #2 Yes you can hook a second screen up. #3 Yes and it's also worth buying Applecare which extends you warranty to three years. Good luck.
