IMAC (21.5") and MacbookPro display help

So, I have an IMAC 21.5 bought today (8 July 14) and a Macbook pro (forget the date, late 11' I think). Both Computers have Thunderbolt ports and I have Thunderbolt cable plugged into both. Each Computer is capable of TDM mode. Right now the Macbook is in TDM mode (a gray screen with a weird Y shape bouncing around. All i want to do is have the MacBook act as a second monitor, giving me the ability to drag what's on the IMAC screen over to the macbook (or vice versa I suppose). I've tried every thread and I haven't had any success. Thanks in advance guys!

IMac loudly whirs and freezes. please help!

I have a 27" iMac purchased November 2009. Have tried searching discussions for help but am unsure what to call the problem as it is so peculiar!
Several times an hour it makes a strange loud whirring noise (which does not appear to be a fan to me as it is not a smooth sound, sounds more like a hard drive 'thinking' possibly?? but I have no idea) and freezes until the noise stops (which generally takes anywhere between 10-30 seconds). Very frustrating as it interupts my workflow and all I can do is wait it out. It does not seem to matter how many/which applications are running. it happens when i have creative suite open but then it also happens if all i have open is chrome!
It is within warranty, however I have no time to take it to be fixed until November as I can't be without it until then, so am hoping someone will have a suggestion to help me out!
I don't know what other information would be helpful, but just in case, it has 4GB of RAM and has a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and still has about 775GB of hard drive space free.
would doing a fresh install of my OS help?
any advice you can give me would be appreciated! or point me towards an existing discussion (all i could find were people describing their whirring noise as a buzzing, and mine is definitely not buzzing)

My first thought would be the hard drive, you may not have time to get it check out until November
but think about what you might loose if you don't. Just have a great backup plan for a just
incase scenario
If its not a harddrive, what ever you have going on is not good, as your aware of, you need to
reevaluate and think about if you lost what you have verses not having access to your files.
I assume you have contacted Apple support on the phone, to see what they might have to say

Late 2010 iMac Running Sluggish and Loud-PLS HELP

I have only found one or two threads relating to my specific problem, and I still need more help. Anyone's help (...Linc Davis) would be very much appreciated.
First off, let me tell you what I am running.
Late 2010 model iMac (3.2 GHz intel core). OSX Snow Lion 10.6.8. 4GB Ram. 1TB hard drive (less than half full)
Here is where I have isolated the problem so far.
-Switching between applications is often very sluggish and laggy. It takes up to 10 seconds sometimes to open an appplication.
-Playing audio files with either itunes or preview. Quite often a song will stall for up to 5 or more seconds before playing again
-NOTE occasionally the audio actually cut out for five seconds and then start again later on in the song as opposed to simply stalling.
-Typing in search bars, this action is often sluggish and laggy as well.
-Clicking on icons and links. Example, at the start up window when I clicked on my user account it took about three seconds to bring up the username box
-Fan is working very loudly right from startup, and not slowing down at all.
Here are the solutions I have tried to no avail.
-Ran disk utility, everything came up as ok
-monitered my CPU usage with various problem causing applications. The RAM usage is fine and should be working great, I almost always have more than half freed up RAM
-I replaced the thermal cream around the hard drive because it was over heating a bunch and I also gave it a good clean. This fixed the over heating problem but the laggin still occurs.
-SMC reset (twice). no change.
I don't know what to do next, somebody please help. Do I have any malware? Is my harddrive failing?
p.s. I'm pretty noob to the intricacies of going deep into computers, but I can follow steps and figure out what's going on easy enough.

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

Update date for anyone who ha suffered with the problem of losing connection to an ext HDD.
For me, the solution appears to have been achieved by making use of my old 802.11 b&g Airport Extreme base station and my new 802.11 n Airport Extreme Base Station.
My network is now setup as follows:-

I connect my ADSL line to both AEBS by ethernet, changed the settings and this has dramatically improved my connection reliability and speed when streaming movies and/or music.
Through trial & error, I have also discovered that the other problems that I have are connected to situations when restart my Macbook after a shut down or restart and my iPhone is connected. This causes iTunes to start up but due to the restart, the ext HDD is not ready and therefore, ITunes opens its local library - I now just try to remember to use the Option key to choose the library. Finally, if the laptop just runs out of juice, the ext HDD doesn't have the chance to have a friendly handshake before losing its connection. When I restart, the connection does to the HDD fails and I have to restart AEBS
I hope that helps anyone with similar problems or who wants to make the most of their fast 802.11n equipment by making is use of that kit that was maybe considered redundant - by creating a dual frequency network that maximizes speeds on 802.11 n whilst allowing use of the legacy 802.11 b&g devices.

IMac crash - Hang and crazy display on restart

I've got an iMac Core 2 Duo and have had it for a year and a half. (Warranty expired)
I upgraded to Snow Leopard when it came out.
It hung recently and a restart brought up the grey screen, apple and the spinning load symbol but then the screen went light grey and was covered by dozens of 3mm black squares. The bottom 20mm of the screen was also black.
Sometimes a boot will get to the blue screen where I can use the mouse but then stalls and on occasion it'll get to the desktop image with an active mouse but then the pinwheel of death.
I've flashed the PRAM.
I've run an advanced hardware test. (Nothing)
I've removed all devices except the keyboard.
I can boot into Safemode and have done a permissions repair.
Still nothing.
I've tried to boot off another drive. Stills fails. Only safe mode will work.
Tried both the SL installer disk and the L installer disk and they hang on the screen that follows the language selection.
Tried with only one memory chip, then the other. Still didn't work.
This all happened a few weeks ago and I managed to get it working again after booting using verbose mode. Now verbose mode runs but then once it's done I get a black hang screen covered in tiny white dots. The pattern is reminiscent of the above mentioned grey screen with black dots but with more noise and inverted.
Any ideas?

Hmm. Based on a hunch that the screen tears implied a video card issue I tried deactivating the Quartz Extreme using the instructions I found at,..

Hello, I have a simple question. I'm having trouble on choosing a a new Mac. My two top choices are the iMac 21.5'', and MacbookPro 13''. I currently have the 2011 MacbookAir, but I find myself wanting an update. I also do a lot of video editing. Any ideas?

That's why I asked.
Plus the MacBook Pro 13" isn't that much faster than the MacBook Air.
Another idea to play with would be a 15" MacBook Pro plus a 27" ThunderBolt Display

Using iMac and the display for MacBook Air

Evening all
I'm trying to hook my MacBook Air up to my iMac in order to use my iMac as the Macbook's display.
I've just been out and bought a thunderbolt cable, plugged one end into my Macbook and the other into my iMac... pressed command + F2 but nothing happens?
I've also tried command + ctrl + F2...
Where am I going wrong??

Unfortunately the instructions do not help me... They suggest that the target display should function provided that a thunderbolt cable is plugged in to each device... however, when I press Command and F2, nothing happens?
I've tried rebooting both computers, resetting the PRAM and nothing works?

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 13" and bought a brand new iMac 27" last week.
I tried to transfer data (musdic & photos) via Thunderbolt, but i did not run, my system always
tries to transfer data via WLAN, but that would last more than 80 hours.
I tried to get some help from the Apple Support, but unfortunately they couldn't help me.
A promised call-back from the next higher support-level has not been done.
Does anybody know what the problem might be.
The Thunderbolt-cable is brand new.

Instead of using Migration Assistant, the best way is to use the Target Disk Mode, so you will save headaches (Migration Assistant creates a new user with the transferred data).
To do this, just connect both Macs with the Thunderbolt cable, and then, start the MacBook Pro holding the T key, so a Thunderbolt or FireWire icon should appear on the display. After that, go to the iMac, open Finder, and the hard drive of the MacBook Pro will appear on the Finder sidebar as an external drive, under "Devices". Just access to it, go to the folders with your iTunes and iPhoto libraries, and copy them to the iMac

IMac hooked up to HDTV - display and colours

I have hooked up my iMac to my HDTV Panasonic TC 26LX70
It works pretty well, i have 2 issues though:
Each time i hook up the imac to the hdtv, the display for my imac changes automatically. I tried to find the good setting in systems preferences but so far nothing great. I still have the display of the imac re-initializing eah time
The colours on the HDTV are not as good as on the iMac screens, they are more "HDTV" like, too bright, too flashy. How can i get the same ones than on the mac?

If you have it set to +Mirror Displays+ in System Preferences Displays pane Arrangement tab, you should uncheck that setting. Then, the two screens together will show an extended Desktop, as represented in the diagram on that preference pane, and you will be able to set the resolution on the two screens independently. So you can use the optimum settings for each screen; the standard HD resolution for most HDTVs is 1920x1080 (1080p).

Yes, eww, the language definitely states two thunderbolt displays, but I can understand the confusion and was siding with how they could make the mistake to think it would work like they want it to. My appologies for not being clear on that point, but I think you make it clear that the language in the ad says nothing about an imac.

Just in-case anyone els runs into this, I figured it out... I was working from my hotel and apperantly the fire wall was not allowing anything to uplaod, but I wasn't getting an error message from iweb, it would say that everything was published succesfully even though it wasn't. Once I went home and used my connection eveything worked fine.

Thanks, Jim, for taking the time, but the reply is unfortunately vague in the exact area of my confusion! "you need to copy that file to your new computer..." Well, the Import/Export instructions make it seem as if the two computers should be able to communicate this file thru wifi, but that's the linkage I can't seem tocreate with Import/Export. Should I instead email a copy to myself (thats what applecare suggested)? Copy it to and from a thumb drive? But then place the file where? And the article was helpful, but should I be trying to move the Library file or the Library.xml file (as iTunes Help suggests)? Sorry to be so clueless about it...I suppose I buy Apple in the hopes of not having to think about this stuff, which approach seems not to be serving me well. Thanks again for your time!
