The screen is breaking up during start-up with loads of small squares in a grid. Then the screen goes blank grey the grid of squares come back and start-up gets stuck. Please see image.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Scott

Doesn't hurt to make some trouble shooting before taking it to repair. But before making tests make sure to take backup of your data. Start by starting up in “safe mode”.
  1. Shut down your Mac and wait 10 seconds.
  2. Press the power button.
  3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key. You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.
  4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator (spinning gear).
To leave safe mode, restart your Mac normally without holding down any keys during startup.
Once you have your data in safe place try to make some test to determine if this is a hardware related problem or something else.
To start with follow these simple guides:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM

Bluetooth shuttted down after I updated to Mavericks, please help me !
I am 70 Years old and worked very happy with my iMac (21,5“ mid 2010, 3,2 GHz Intel Core 3)
until I updated him from  SnowLeopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks 10.9.2.
2 Days all was OK. Next Morning-Start he needs (until now) 3 minutes to show me a SCREEN only milky white. After that he starts like ever with all ICONS in about 1 minute. (together 4 min.)
..But I must notice, that I cannot make anything, because the „BLUETOOTH APPLE WIRELESS KEYBOARD  and the APPLE  MAGIC MOUSE“ doesn't work anything like before.
I could nothing do, I must drop my APPLE only out.
That I maked ever 10x and all was the same... (Maveriks also 4x new updated)
I taked my Logitech-Bluetooth-Mouse from the WIN-Laptop, dropped it in USB from iMAC...and in one second I could work only with this MOUSE...I buyd the Logitech COMBO K520 and all was OK now with my lovely APPLE iMAC to work with him...But without APPLE KEYBOARD and MAGIC MOUSE...and with a 4 min. -START until now.
I  asked the EXPERTS from APPLE-SUPPORT under Tel. 0800-6645451 in Germany, became a Number, maked many Things by starting new, but the mistake after all is the same like before.
When I look into ...Apple/ Info/System/ Hardware/ Bluetooth   ..my APPLE says: NO INFOs FOUND (Es wurden keine Informationen gefunden.)
Under Hardware/ Diagnose : Selbsttest beim Einschalten: zuletzt ausgeführt: 15.05. 14, Ergebnis: Bestanden (that means OK) !!
I asked many Peaple, who sold APPLE-Computers in the STORS, but they all had no IDEA, how they can help.
I think, it could be a DRIVER when Starting the BIOS, JAVA RUNTIME a.s.o...
Is an Expert under YOU to help me by my Problem with this iMAC ?

    dietmarfromdeu,
if you start up your iMac in Safe mode, do you still have Bluetooth problems with your Apple wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse?

  • How do I run Extended Apple Hardware Test imac 21.5 mid-2010 mavericks

How do I run Extended Apple Hardware Test imac 21.5 mid-2010 mavericks?  I have tried to start my computer holding down the "D" key but my iMac simply just restarts as normal.
I have checked the list of iMacs that can be upgraded to do an internet Extended Apple Hardware Test and I do not have one of those computers.
I cannot find any solution as yet.
I do not have the start up disks or the usb disks.

You can't run the hardware test without the installation discs.
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity

  • TS1587 My iMac 27" model mid 2010 cannot boot

My iMac 27" model mid 2010 cannot boot , it shut down after apple logo running a while. It happened after I'd installed ntfs-3G and restart the system

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • ASUS PB278Q with iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010) using DisplayPort

    Hi,
I bought a new display ASUS PB278Q (27-inch). So I can use my PC with a bigger screen and also extend my iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010) with it.
    I'm using OSX 10.9.5
    - Idea was to connect my PC to monitor using DualLink-DVI cable - which worked fine. %
    - My iMac to monitor using Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable - after that display says -- DisplayPort - No signal --
Could it be that the cable is wrong? Or what can it be
I would really need some help.
    Thank you and best regards.

    Solved.
I bought better Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort -cable and then the resolution from iMac to ASUS PB278Q got the wanted 2560*1440.
    Now I'm happy.
    Resolution out from
    - PC is 2560*1440 via DualLink DVI-cable
    - iMac is 2560*1440 via Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort -cable and for both screens, iMac 27-inch and ASUS 27-inch
    - Playstation 3 is 1920*1080 via HDMI-cable
    What I learned.

  • IMac 21.5 mid 2010: loud alerts : some ideas?

iMac 21.5 mid 2010, i3 processor: loud alerts : some ideas? After upgrading from 4 Go of rams to 8 Go. No alerts on start up. But during some processes (printing, edition in iPhoto, permission reparation, ....), 3 lood alerts, silence, 3 loud alerts in succession. I replaced the new 4 Go bought from Kingston. Five days later, same miscomportment.  Rember test and Appe Hardware test  didn't reveal any anomaly. I teared off these new Rams and run with the 4 Go shipped with the machine: all is Ok now as before the upgrade.  Some suggestions, please.

The 3 tones alert means ram problems.
The kingston ram you got is not fully compatible with your imac.
This seems to be happening frequently with ram from kingston.
Get ram from OWC it will work better.

Launchpad had disappeared from Dock. Launchpad is present in Applications but refuses to activate. How to activate and make available in Dock?
    iMac 21.5 mid 2010. os x v10.7.2.

You should be able to put Launchpad back in the Dock by dragging it from the Applications folder to the left section of the Dock.  As to why it won't launch, run the Console utility, try to run Launchpad, and see if any messages appear in the Console window.

    Problems installing OS
I have an iMac 21.5 (mid-2010) and I'm trying to install a new hard drive.  When I choose the installation disk the Apple logo comes up and it stops there.  Then the mouse and keyboard goes dead.  I'm trying to install 10.6.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Since you have a new hard drive, there is nothing on it, so you need to boot from an external source (and probably format the hard drive before installing an OS). Are you booting from the 10.6 install disk? Better yet - do you have a bootable backup clone or at least a Time Machine backup?

  • How to upgrade my iMac 27-inch Mid 2010 for video editing?

Hi there, I have an iMac 27-inch, Mid 2010 1TB that I would like to upgrade to work well with film editing (using programs like Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.)
    My System's specs:
    iMac 27 Inch Mid-2010
    - 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3
    - 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    - ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MB
    - Last 4 Digits of the Serial Number is JDNP
I'm quite unfamiliar with upgrading an iMac and was hoping I could find some help here regarding what is possible to upgrade on my system?  I understand that installing RAM is quite easy, but is it possible to upgrade the Processor and Graphics Card?  And what about Installing a bigger hard drive or SSD?  Also, where do I take my iMac to get these upgrades?  Apple Store?  Hopefully I'm not sounding like a complete idiot here.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you are not computer savvy and have never upgraded a computer before, then you need to see what Apple can do for you, but it maybe better to take your Mac to a third party Apple authorised reseller/repair center as they will be more likely to do actual modifications to your Mac. Apple stores tend to only stick with installing stock OEM Apple hardware.
The CPU cannot be replaced or upgraded or replaced as I believe it is soldered to the logic board.
The GPU maybe able to be upgraded, but the only other GPU option that it can be replaced with is the the 1 GB VRAM GPU version that was a GPU chip model available during the 2010 iMac model year.
This will be hard to locate and, probably, very expensive to purchase (at least $300 U.S.D..).
A third party Mac compatible SSD should be able to be installed, but will be expensive, too!
Get as large an SSD as you can afford to purchase and pay for the installation.
If you stick with a traditional hard drive, your Mac can take up to a 3 TB hard drive.
You CAN install additional RAM yourself. However your Mac year and model will only take a total of 16 GBs of RAM.
Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (http://www.macsales.com).

  • My IMac 21.5 mid 2010's HD is going bad on it, after upgrading to mavericks it slowed way down and after it shut off and now won't come back on, would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked?

My IMac 21.5 mid 2010's HD is going bad on it, after upgrading to mavericks it slowed way down and after it shut off and now won't come back on, I call apple support and they told me to bring it in but the nearest store is about two hours away. They said I need it to erase my hard drive but I have too many family pics on it.
would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked on it? I could replace the internal and get an enclosure for the original until I get the pics out of it?
Please advise, it's like five years of family pics I don't wanna loose them and I am worried.
    Thanks
    Al Florez

    A Brody,
I really apprecate your very quick respond, Its too late to back up as of now, my hard drive wont load at all so I cannot follow your instruction to back it up. Learn a hard lesson but I will from now on following your link.
Also my hard drive it is not available to do the free exchange program.
I read the OWC instruction on how to replace the drive I was just wondering if the 2TB would work on it instead of the 1 TB they offer, I specifically asked for the Seage Barracuda because I had great experiences with it on PCs.
    Again, Thank you

I have an imac 21.5 mid 2010 and want to restore it to out-of-the-box condition.  It came with no dvds.

That model should have come with a DVD for 10.6.3 or .4
Call apple support and request the DVD for your model.  (The retail SL DVD won't help in your case as it's too old).

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 13inch - Issues w/ all browsers

Hello all! Please read the entire post before replying.  I have attempted several fixes for my problem based on other posts, but to no avail.
Problem:  My mid-2010 MBP is having issues w/ all browers (Safari, Chrome, Mozilla).  Simply, I'll be online with email, reading news, shopping, working, etc. and the browser is working fine and then out of the blue when I attempt to go to a new page the status bar will load about 15%-20% (as if it's working properly), then stop and advance no further.  The remainder of the page will not load and I am unable to do anything online.  This happens regardless of the browser I am using.  The only immediate fix I have found is to quit the app and restart the computer.  I have had this problem in several differnet locations and on several different networks.  There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when or where this happens.  There are sometimes where the browser works fine.
    Attempted Solutions:
    1. Uninstalling and reinstalling all 3 of the above mentioned browsers.  Didn't help.
    2. Purchased and Installed MacKeeper.  Ran scans to check for viruses, maleware, etc. - any issue located was dealt with appropraitely.  And the problem persisted.
    3. Ran Apple Hardware Test from the disc that came with my MBP (Both quick and longer versions of the test).  No hardware issue was located.
    4. Ok so maybe the issue is software.  Attempted to reinstall Mac OS X from disc that came with my MBP (Snow Leopard).  Please note that my current OS is Maverick 10.9.2.  Upon restarting with "C" help down, I begin to navigate through the prompts.  About step 3 where I must select the startup disk, I chose the local HD.  I receive an error message at the bottom that I cannot use my local HD as the startup disk, but there is no other option.  I am not sure what's going on here.  There may be an error with running Maverick and attempting to go backwards to Snow Leopard, but if the issue is software OS related how can I reinstall my OS?
The only next option, that I am aware of, is to replace the physical wifi component as that might be the issue.  However, the Wifi signal always shows there is a signal and will dsicover mutliple networks (where there are multiple networks).
Does anyone else have this problem or know of a possible solution I haven't tried?
    Thanks in advance!!

  • How can I connect my MBA 11" 2012  to my Imac 21.5" mid 2010 as a display unit. Connected using a mini display port cable and this did not work. Any guidance welcome. Thanks. John

I bought a belkin mini display unit cable( new) and connected the thunderbolt port in the MBA ( 11" , mid 2012) to the Imac mini display unit port using this cable. Pressed the CMD & F2 keys on the Imac keyboard as required but this did not work. Should I try with another cable ? Should i try with a thunderbolt cable ( recommended by appple support ) -- but they too were not sure about this. Is the Mid 2010 21.5" Imac not able to function as an display unit? Any guidance would help and will be much appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Only the 27-inch iMac and Mid 2011 and newer iMacs can be used as an external screen, so you can't use your Mac as an external screen. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
You can still use your iMac as an external display, using an application like ScreenRecycler

  • MBP Mid 2010 screen glitch on OS X Lion

I wish i can show you a picture but the glitch happens so quick i cant take a screen shot. But what it is basically for like a second it shows the desktop image over google chrome when i used it. It doesnt show it completely. Its only a portion of the screen and it has like black squares or something on it. Anyone else having the same issue? It's really weird. Maybe it's just google chrome that has the issue. And also when im watching videos like on netflix. Maybe it has something to do with the adobe flash issues that have some up due to OS X Lion update.

Same here, I'm running Lion on the mid-2010 13" MBP and get similar issues. Recently I got similar problem with Adium as well, but mostly Chrome. I think this is a graphics driver issue.
The 2010 MBPs were running 32-bit kernel in 10.6 and now they run a 64 bit kernel by default. I'm thinking of rebooting into 32 bit mode and running it like this for a few days to see whether the graphics issues will persist.
If you want to try it yourself, reboot the computer and hold the 3 and 2 buttons on the keyboard to boot the 32 bit kernel. After you boot start up Activity Monitor and check "kernel_task", in the "Kind" column it should say "Intel" and NOT "Intel (64 bit)"

  • Can I connect my late-2012 iMac to my mid-2010 MacBook Pro?

I've just bought a new late 2012 27" iMac and also have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro.
I also purchased a Thunderbolt cable, is there anyway I can use this to connect the two? If not... do I have any options for file sharing between the two?

The Thunderbolt cable is useless to connect both Macs. Mid 2010 MacBooks Pro have got Mini DisplayPort, and Mini DisplayPort isn't compatible with Thunderbolt.
If you want to use Target Disk Mode in order to connect both Macs, you have to buy two things: the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, and a FireWire cable to connect the adapter and the MacBook. You have to connect the Thunderbolt adapter to the Thunderbolt port of the iMac.
Then, if you want to transfer old files from the backup, you can use Migration Assistant if you want to migrate applications and user accounts (if you haven't set up the iMac, use Setup Assistant. If you want to transfer individual files, use Target Disk Mode
