Imac 21.5 white screen on boot up

I have the A1311 2009 21.5" iMac. The computer was running fine. I changed startup disks to boot off of a friend's external USB backup to get some files off for them (I needed to export their address book and get other various files)
When I finished getting what I needed under system preferences I changed the boot up drive back to my imac's internal drive and clicked restart.
The computer restarted gave the startup chime and stayed at a blank white screen. No spinning sprocket.
I am using a usb keyboard and usb mouse.
The only boot keyboard command that works is command+option+p+r and when I do that I get the chime and a reboot.
I've tried resetting the SMC by unpluggin it.
I've tried inserting a disk warrior cd to boot off of it, but it doesn't boot. And holding the mouse button on startup does not eject the CD.
I've tried holding c when booting to boot of the CD drive.
I've tried holding option when starting. I've connected my own bootable USB backup and held "option" when starting.
I've tried holding shift when starting. I've tried command+r when starting.
Nothing happens. I always get the chime and then a white screen.
Looking online, it looked like several macbook air/pro owners with a similiar problem disconnected their HDD and then were able to boot off an external source. So I took off the glass and LCD and disconnected the 3 hdd connectors, put the screen on and tried booting again using all the steps above and every time always the same, a chime and then white screen.
I took all the ram out and when it was turned on got a low intermitent beep and black screen. Put the ram back in and get the startup chime and white screen.
I'm at a loss as to what else to try. I can't see how booting off my friend's external usb hdd would lead to this.
Any suggestions.

I reopened the imac, removed the optical drive (hdd was already out). Restarted with my USB external HDD connected, nothing happened, white screen still. I then reconnected the friend's USB HDD also and restarted and got the screen to choose a startup disk.
Computer then boots fine from my external hdd. Turn it off, reinstall my HDD and optical drive.
Turn it on again and am greeting with the same blank white screen again.
I then remove the optical drive again and am able to boot from the internal drive. BUT when I go to system preferences to change startup disk, if I check the internal drive or the external USB drive and click reset I got the error "building boot caches on boot helper partition failed". I have no idea what is going on. I repair permissions several times.
I then restart the computer several times and it seems to restart consistently from the internal drive. I then put the optical drive back in and it now appears to be working.
The original external drive I booted from was a 10.5 macbook pro cloned drive. So I don't know if that somehow corrupted my 10.8 imac drive or some firmware that made it such that it wouldn't boot.
What a hassle.
And for anyone who cares and has read this far, I am living in a remote town in Mongolia at the time and didn't have any suction cups to remove the front glass from the imac. I do have an iSesamo tool to open up ipod touches and such, and was able to use that to get the front glass off.
If anyone has an idea of what happened I'd be interested in hearing.

  • IMac not booting/finding HDD? White screen on Boot

    Hi
Upgraded to Yosemite on launch day and the iMac has been fine up until last Monday.
We had a power cut and the iMac was on at the time. Since then, any time I try to switch it on I get a white screen.
I've created a Yosemite boot drive on my memory stick and it finds it. Gone into Disk Utility and it says the drive is damaged and backup any data is can.
Are the power cut and HDD failure connected or could it be something to do with Yosemite?
Its asking me to backup the data on the HDD but is this possible if I cant boot into it?
    Thanks

  • Getting white screen when booting with alt key

Hi, I've installed windows 7 with boot camp on my brand new iMac 27" on OS X Lion.
Everything works fine when I configure boot camp to start as mac, or as windows.
However If I press the alt key when booting, as per this tutorial http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/04/boot-camp-tutorial-install-windows-xp.html I get a white screen and that's it. Any Idea as to what might be the problem?

    Hi
Try resetting the Parameter RAM (PRAM) - pronounced peeram. Restart the mac and depress the P, R, alt and command keys simultaneously. You should hear the boot chime. Keep the keys depressed until you hear the boot chime three more times. Release the keys thereafter.
Other possibilities are: you're filling up the hard drive and you need to clear some space; a problem is developing with the hard drive and/or directory structure. You need to run a disk repair utility such as fsck, DU's Repair Disk coupled with Repairing Privileges or something 3rd-Party such as Disk Warrior.

  • White screen when booting

Yesterday i downloaded driver and software for hp 8600 printer. Today, the imac 2009 does not boot. All i get is a white screen. Is there anything i can do?

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963 and restart your computer.

  • White Screen on boot up - have had to restore system

    Hi,
Switched on my iMac this evening as was confronted with a white screen, no apple logo, no nothing. After trying switch on, switch off a couple of times I still had no joy. So I decided to restore from my last Time Machine backup (restore is currently in progress as I'm typing this post).
I don't know that anything has changed recently that would have caused this. I upgraded to 10.5.3 a few weeks ago and it's been working fine so I don't think it's that. Any ideas what may have happened?
    Thanks..

If it's only temporary and your Mac sucessfully boots, then don't do anything.

  • IMac Freezes at white screen during startup

    Hello,
I was off of my iMac for an hour or two so my screen saver when on.  I went to wake the computer and it was frozen.  I tried using the keyboard and mouse to wake up the computer from the screen saver, but it would not work, so I powered the iMac down manually from the button on the back.  I let it sit for 15 minutes, then I tried to start the computer up again.  Now at start up, I get to a blank white screen with the spinning moving pin wheel, and that is it.  Any suggestions?

You could try to use SafeBoot mode on startup, essentially you'd hold the Shift
key down on startup, perhaps you may need to login after waiting quite awhile,
then continue holding the shift key down until you see a traditional desktop.
And then use Disk Utility to verify HDD, & repair disk permissions.+ Restart.
Or if you have a system install-restore DVD, boot from that and have the
Installer's version of Disk Utility check verify repair the hard disk drive.
It can also repair disk permissions, too, from the booted version of D.U.
Then when it is done, choose the startup disk from installer menu options.
The DVD should eject, but if not, it should be ignored as a boot volume
after you've chosen the Mac HD as a boot system.
PS: If your computer is now running a system later than Snow Leopard,
where no DVD would be needed if it has a Recovery partition in the HDD
then you could see about booting into Recovery (command + R) to access
the later system's OS X Utilities, and choose Disk Utility to check/repair, etc.
    These may help.
    Good luck!

  • IMac with a White Screen

    Hi,
I have a 17" iMac G5 iSight that is about 3 and a half years old. Last week it started operating oddly. When asleep the fan started running very fast and loud. Then I noticed the screen would start getting colored vertical thick lines going through it. And now when I start it up all I get is a white screen with thin blue lines that looks like a grid.
Not sure what wrong. Maybe the graphics card?
My question is, is it worth a repair cost or should I upgrade to a new model iMac? I kind of hoped I would get more than 3 to 4 years out of this computer.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Hi Steve - it could be a number of things, your video card or your logic board come to mind. Try running the Apple Hardware Test from your install disc, if you can boot from it.

  • IMac stuck on white screen, no shortcuts work. What to do?

    Hello,
my iMac is just a few moths old and it is now stuck on white screen. Trying to hold alt or command+whatever at startup doesnt work. cmd+option+r+p havent helped as well. It starts, makes sound and stucks on this white blank screen. I have Win 7 installed as well. I have also tried unmounting all peripherals.I  used it yesterday, booted in Win 7 and I installed new wireless logitech mouse. Than restarted, installed new Win updates, restarted again. Then I worked in Win 7 and finally I shut it down. And today it is just stuck. Please help. Thanks a lot.

As I have written in my first post, trying to hold alt (option) key does not do anything

  • IMac late 2009 White sceen on boot.

I have a late 2009 imac, which when i startup i'm just getting a white screen.
I've serached and found various solutions, none of which are working. I've tried all of the following:
    Removed all the peripherals
    Removed additional ram I installed
    Tried booting from a USB
    Tried booting in safe mode
Tried booting in single user mode.
    Tried resetting the SMC
Tried to access the hard drive in target disk mode via firewire.
The only thing that actually creates a response is a PRAM reset, which restarts the computer after a few seconds, but I still get the white screen.
Anyone got any other suggestions, it's driving me insane.

  • IMac suddenly shows white screen after update Yosemite to 10.10.1

The day after I installed the update(10.10.1) for Yosemite, regularly my iMac suddenly stops working by showing a white screen. After 10 seconds, the iMac reboots automatically and again shows a white screen. Than, it stops. No action. No noise. I'm  always obliged to stop the iMac by pressing the start button and restarting by holding the 'shift' key otherwise I have to look at a white screen again! In the save modus, I can work(typing this story) and restart the iMac. After a while, the whole show starts again. What can I do? Installing Yosemite again and whiteout the update? Can I undo the update? This once, I made no backup before the update(Murphy's law). Any suggestion will do!

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
