Imac 233 - beeps and doesn't startup

Hey,
i'm a new poster on this forum, looking for some help.
My tangerine imac 233 is behaving strangely: when switching it on it beeps 4 times and doesn't give any additional sign of being alive.
i can hear both the fan and the hd going, but there is no sign at all that something is happening.
The screen is not giving any sign of life and there is no response from the keyboard (ie caps lock doesn't switch on and the power button doesn't allow to switch off the imac, though it allows to turn the power on).
I've tried to reset the NVRAM, but i couldn't see any result, as the imac doesn't even get to the Chimes sound.
I'd love to keep using this imac, is there anything i can do to keep it alive?
many thanks
benedetto

Ciao e benvenuto alle discussioni di Apple,
4 Beeps is the Power On Self Test telling you something is wrong. I think you need to take this in to a professional.
You can recover the data by installing the hard disk in an external enclosure and transferring it to the iBook.

  • The fan on my imac runs fast and doesn't stop.

The fan on my imac runs fast and doesn't stop. I have to shut down the computer to get it to stop.
Why is it doing that and how do i stop it?

Reset the SMC using the directions below:
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Mac Pro, Lion: front light flashing, fans blowing, and doesn't startup...

This has never happened before: my Mac Pro's (Lion) front light flashing, fans blowing, and doesn't startup...
    Any workaround? Help, please...

If there is no response to keyboard or powerbutton presses; hold power button until it shuts off. Unplug and wait 5 minutes and then plug back in and try to start again.
    Post back with results.

  • IMac screen pixilated and frozen on startup, won't get as far as home screen, any ideas? Thanks

iMac screen pixilated and frozen on startup, won't get as far as home screen, just pulsating pixilation! Any ideas gratefully received, Thanks

    Hello,
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Does it get any further if it cools for an hour?
Hold Shift key at bootup... does that work?

  • Powerbook beeps and flashes on startup the NOTHING!

    Hi there,
My powerbook froze last night and I turned it off by holding down the power button. I then left it for a few minutes and turned it back on. The machine made the usual noise when once i pressed the power but then made a noise of 3 beeps and the white light at the front flashed about 4 times.
The display is black and nothing else happens. Just a continuing flashin light on the front.
    Can anyone help?

Also, if swapping the two RAM sticks does let you boot, check "About this Mac" on the Apple menu afterwards to make sure your Mac is still seeing all the RAM-- if it's only seeing half, you might have the dreaded lower memory slot failure.

  • 2.1ghz iMac Kernel Panics and no CD startup

Just got my Refurb iMac G5. Its 2.1ghz, the iSight model. I chose the Apple Certified Refurb because I work alot with Adobe Creative suite and heard that it wouldnt be UB for at least 2 years by which time I will have a new system.
Anyhow, I bought a 1gb Samsung memory stick from OWC and have been getting Kernel Panics(6 in the last two days). Funny thing is, even when I removed the memory stick I still get the KP's. Secondly, my iMac will not strtup from the Applecare CD. I just get the gray screen with the circle slash through it.
Back to the memory, I ran Disk Utility while booted from the startup disk and it showed a catalog error which Disk Utility could not repair, even when booted from the OSX install DVD. During this time period some crazy stuff was happenning, the computer would NOT startup at all, from strtup disk or cd drive. It wouldget to the Apple logo with the progress spinner under it and then just go black and shut off. It did this probably 15 out of 20 times during an hour. I then got it to finally start up by booting into the black screen with white type (forget hat it is called, single user or verbose or safe...?) ran fsck -f, which showed the same catalog error as before and said it still couldn't fix it. Finally got it to start up; So, I backed up all my files and zeroed out the whole 250gb drive and reinstalled OSX, ran all the Software Updates to get to 10.4.7 and am still getting Kernel Panics, and it still wont start up from the AppleCare cd.
    My questions are:
I thought Samsung memory was Apple approved, what should I put in this iMac?
Is there a known issue with 10.4.7 and iMac G5's with KP's?
BTW, I ran Apple hardware test( the LONG one) and everything passed, even the RAM.
Disk Utility now shows a verified and "ok" drive when I test it now; yet still I get KP's
Thanks for any help, sorry for the long post but I wanted to assure clarity in my situation.
offtopic- When I tried to enroll my iMac for my Apple care it told me I need to call Apple, any idea why? I bought the iMac and the Applecare on the same invoice.

Hi swizcore, welcome to Discussions. Do you have any USB or Firewire devices connected to your Imac? These can sometime cause problem start ups. Try if possible to disconnect all but the USB keyboard and mouse and restart.
As for memory most brands of RAM will work, more important is it the correct RAM for your Imac. The fact that you removed it and all that was in the Imac was apple (Hardwired RAM I beleive with iSights) I don't think it would be the problem YET
I would definately be getting a hold of Apple ASAP this should not be happening and at the same time you can get the Apple care registered.
Good luck and post back with results or if they don't find the problem. Bob :~))

  • IMac screen pixelated and unreadable at startup...what's going on?

This morning when I started my computer for the day, I noticed that the wallpaper was very pixelated, almost like a transparent Photoshop layer.  When I moved the cursor all I saw was a pixelated box and I was unable to interact with any folders/icons.  I had to turn off the computer using the power button but when I restarted, the screen looked even worse - pink pixels on top and black ones on bottom.  I am having to use my iPhone to post this and while I took a few pictures of the screen I cant figure out how to post them here.  Another restart showed the same thing so I've left it turned off... It was behaving normally just last night!  Can anyone help me, or am I going to have to haul it into my local Apple store?  Thanks!

It's possible that the GPU is damaged. The only thing you can do is to take the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller, so they will tell you if it's a GPU or display issue and the cost of the repair

  • My iMac goes to disc utilities on startup, repair disk doesn't cure it and I can't reinstall Mountain Lion because I don't remember my I'd and password at the time I bought the software. Currently working abroad and at a loss can anyone help please?

My iMac goes to disc utilities on startup, repair disk doesn't cure it and I can't reinstall Mountain Lion because I don't remember my ID and password at the time I bought the software the system isn't accepting my current details and Apple isn't recognising the answers to my security questions.  They don't even seem to have my correc date of birth so I can't progress the reinstallation.  I'm currently abroad and have my iMac with me but with no way of contacting Apple that I can find, I'm at a loss and very reluctant to pay £35 to try and get my ID and pasword sorted out given that their system recognises my current details.  can anyone help please?

when they gifted me the mountain Lion software several years ago.
Mountain Lion was introduced in July 2012. Did the people who gifted you possibly use their Apple ID for the purchase of your OS? If you used your own Apple ID, you should have simply used the one you use for all things app store. The problem with any purchase at the app store is: whatever Apple ID was used to purchase, it willl stay tied to that Apple ID forever. And, purchases from the app store are not transferable.
So, you can check with the person(s) who gifted you or spend $20 to buy it - or, if your hardware is compatible with the new OS Mavericks, you could download it and associate it with your Apple ID.
FWIW, according to the licensing agreement, the OS remains the property of Apple and you are only granted a license to run it.

  • IMac running Lion sometimes does Repeat Beep and freezes crashes

Longtime Mac user. Upgraded to Lion when released. Worked fine for days till three days ago.
About twice a day (computer is on all day in office - iMac), it has started a loud beeping, long beeps, several at a time and then a pause, then more beeps, and all the whilte the cursor FREZES on screen. Keyboard input is ignored.  Nothing changes on the screen but it must be shut down with the Power Switch, no other way works.
    Lion? or what?
    Never saw this before.

There's a kb article here about beeps, but it refers to power on beeps:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1547
Doesn't sound as if your machine is very healthy - I'd advise backing it up as soon as possible
Do you have Apple Care? Can you take it to a Genius Bar for inspection?

  • IMac beeps 3 times at startup

Imac beeps 3 times at startup, the original ram was put back into the ram slots, but it still beeps 3 times, how do I fix this

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1547
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
Your RAM is bad.  Make sure you push the RAM firmly until you hear a snap.  If that still does not work, you need to purchase new RAM.

  • IMac gives three beeps and freezes

My neighbour's iMac starts and runs normally most of the time, but periodically when running emits three beeps and then freezes. This is NOT the usual "three beeps at startup" indicating a RAM problem, but whilst the machine is is actually being used.
Can't seem to find anything about this anywhere. Any ideas, anyone?
(The logic board was replaced very soon after purchase as the machine had all sorts of problems . . .)

My imac mid 2010 worked fine with "new" memory for 6 months, then started hanging in mid-session - meaning it froze and beeped loudly hours or days after it booted OK. Put old memory back in and noticed it ran more smoothly with less memory than more. Put the "new" memory back in and ran memtest for days and days; no problems reported. But, the system still froze after I'd been working for a while - at odd times. So, took the "new" memory back to the store, and, while there, upgraded to (more expensive) Crucial brand memory - just to be on the "safer" side. Put the replacement memory in and my imac has never run better - not even when new. So far, my imac is quieter, cooler, and smoother now than since the day I bought it. Thought I'd post this on this old thread because Apple Care had told me to bring the machine to them for three days of testing - per other posts I'd seen on the net. But, that would have been a complete waste of time - since they'd wind up (with the old memory) telling me "no problem," or, (with the "new" memory,) "it's a non-apple part problem." Meanwhile, bad memory can mean bad writes to your hard drive; mine seems fine, but I generally pay close attention to problems and fix them asap, or, sooner. If you wait until you have additional problems, you may spend a lot more time and money getting things finally done - and you may wind up back at "square one" or worse if you trash your drive and it's contents.

  • My iMac doesn't load past the start up white screen and doesn't reach the login screen.

I'm having issues trying to load my iMac up after i had to to shut it down the other day. when i start it up it makes the chirme
and reaches the white screen with the loading symbol but doesn't move on from there! Doesn't anyone know how to fix this to get to the login screen?

    Reinstall Lion.
    Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
