  • Receiving New iMac Free - Video Card Question

Much to my relief, Apple is replacing my 2008 24" iMac after I have brought it in to them 3 times for the same issue in a month (failure to startup, they have replaced two video cards, one MLB, and the display but the problem repeats itself within 1-2 weeks). They are replacing it with a newer model that has a 27" display, twice the ram (4 GB) and twice the HD space (1 TB). My question is about the video card in the new iMac, it is a ATI Radeon HD 4670 with 256 MB, and the card in my old iMac was a NVIDIA 8800 GS with 512 MB. My primary application for my iMac is gaming, which I believe makes the video card the most important component. Does anyone know the difference between 256 and 512 or anything about this new card? Should I ask them if I can pay to upgrade to the Radeon HD 4850 512 MB before I go in to pick up my new iMac?

    Hi Crazy,
I had the exact same problem... my 18month old 24" iMac (with 512MB Video card) went belly up.
I pointed out that what they wanted to offer me had only the 256Mb Card ? ....and he said; "oops I didn't notice that"... so we will send your new 27" iMac - with a 512MB (ATI 4850) at no charge,
So... buddy you just need to tell them - and they will configure your replacement 27" to equal or better the minimum specification of your faulty unit.

  • IMac Display/Video card "error"

Hey ppl, just had the most random thing happen to my new iMac Core Duo 20" today. ive had it for under a month, and its the standard model from Apple. I had a few Apps open, and was using VLC to play a video file.... suddenly, the entire display goes washed out(very bright white/yellow) with a few colored bands going from top to bottom. I could hear the audio from the video playing...but i couldnt make the display get back to normal (force quit, etc). So i had to do a manual reboot of the system and all was fine.
Anyoneelse here experience anything like this ? or anyone here know why something like this would happen ?
    Cheers

this could be caused by any number of things. i would reset the pram holding apple-option-p-r and that might help. but i would also run the apple hardware test. you can do that by booting to your install disk holding the d key. could be the logic board. but could also be inverter, or video card. it could even be software related. i would definitely run apple hardware test though and see if everything checks out. • My 4yr old iMac's video card caught fire, should apple replace it?

I bought an iMac on Monday 24th December 2007, and after attempting to turn it on - 19th January 2012 the video card caught fire in it and has damaged the computer completely.
I find this very surprising from such a high quality brand such as Apple, and I'm wondering if I'm within my rights as a consumer to ask for a refund or fully paid repair. The computer is barely four years old and I treat it with kid gloves. I keep it well away from any danger and it sits comfortably on a solid wood desk, So again I find it impossible to believe that this is a 'natural death' of a iMac.
I took the iMac to a reputable apple centre who quoted me around £1200 to repair the faulty machine.
Cana anyone offer any advice or have suffered any similar problems?

Your iMac is far beyond it's normal warranty, and even beyond the period that would be covered by AppleCare. So getting Apple to cover the issue for free is highly unlikely. I doubt that any consumer rights group would find that Apple is obligated in this matter.
You can of course call Apple support and discuss the matter with them, but even if the iMac actually caught fire rather than a chip just failing (which can in some cases result in significant smoke and stink and make it seem like there was a fire), it's not likely Apple will do anything for you since you probably could not prove that the fire wasn't caused by dust or other debris in the system.
    Regards.

  • Can my Late 2009 24" iMac's video card be replaced without replacing the entire logic board?

Can someone help me determine if my video card is built onto the logic board on my Late 2009 Intel 3.06 mhz 24" iMac?  The video shows corruption (checkered blocks) with a progress bar at the bottom of the screen, then it reboots in a cycle.
According to similar problems found on the web, I'm failry sure that the VRAM is corrupt.  Apple Tech support had me do a reset on the PRAM and that only changed the direction of the corrupt pixels on my display.  I also ran the Apple hardware diagnostic program that came with the iMac 3 times and it found no problems (from what I could tell squinting through my corrupt display).  The S/N is W891507C250.
    Thank you,
    Will W.

I appreciate your reply and you are correct about it being an Early 2009 iMac.
But I'm not sure that you are correct that all Early 2009 iMac's do not have seperate video cards though.  You may be, but according to other sources on the net (such as the link below) claim that some Early 2009 24" iMac models with certain video cards (i.e. NVidia, which I have in mine) are replaceable without replacing the entire logic board.
Again your feedback is appreciated, but I was kind of hoping for an Apple employee or at least an Apple Support Forum Admin to give me an official answer.

  • IMac and video card ATI Radeon HD 4850

Using my iMac 24"/3.06/SD with OSX 10.6 and trying to access Final Cut Express, it tells me I need an AGP video card! Why isn't the ATI Radeon HD 4850 able to display FCE? It operates all my other Apple software. Please, has anyone an idea about this?

  • Upgrading my iMac's video card

I have a 24" 2.33Ghz 2nd generation(?) intel iMac and I'm wondering if I can have apple upgrade my Nvidia GeForce 7600 GT 256mb video card. I've been told by someone that this isn't possible, but I'm curious why not? My last card was recently replaced when my display wouldn't come on, so clearly the exactly card can be switched out, but why would Apple be unwilling/unable to upgrade my card?

The video on the eMac, mini(PPC), Macbook Pro, iMac is a single chip soldered onto the Logic board and so is not upgradeable (changeable) if you could unsolder it without damaging the logic board then you would have to find a video chip that :
    1/ is the same size
2/ has the number of connections (legs)
3/ is the same pin out
    4/ has apple drivers !
    Good luck.

  • Horizontal lines on imac display, video card going bad?

I have horizontal lines and a triangular shaped artifact on my 24 inch Imac display. This happens after quite awhile of use, so I am thinking it might be the video card is about to go. Also, have issues with viewing flash videos, the browser (safari) will just quit responding, sometimes it will recover. Most times I have to reboot the machine. I believe all these syptoms are related. Any ideas?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Your graphic card is damaged. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is to take the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get the computer repaired.
Both problems may be related, because Flash uses the graphic card and it often fails

What do I have to do to have Premiere & Photoshop use the maximum power of this new video card ? Am sure there is something I haven't done? is ther some driver I need to download?

  • Building a new computer.. video card help?

im building a new system, planning to use after effects CS5 on it, and these are the specs.
    Intel Core i7 930 2.8 GHz w/ 8mb cache
    Asus P6T SE Motherboard
2 x 500GB Caviar Black 7200 RPM SATA HD (linked somehow.. raid, maybe? he said it's show up as one drive and be faster)
2 TB 5400 RPM Additional storage drive.
    Patriot Extreme Performance Viper II Series DDR3 12GB (6 x 2GB)
    GeForce GTS 250 512MB PCI-E w/ DVI, HDMI
    and a 24" Samsung Display.
This has run me 2200, already a little over over my budget?
My question is, is it worth the upgrade to a 285 (or maybe a Quadro)? This'll cost probably 300-400 more dollars. How different will it really be with this Mercury Playback Engine?

If you build the PC and it has RAID you can use a RAID 0 (striping).  It
reads and writes faster but if one drive fails all is lost as each drive only contains half of
the data.  I run an ICor7 920 2.66 that boots from a Western Digital 10K hard drive and runs two 500 GB drives in a RAID 0 for data drive.  I didn't get the boost I expected from the RAID 0.  I run two monitors with a 512 MB NVidia 8400 video card running my editing screen and a 1 GB NVidia 9500 running my display monitor.  It works pretty well.  The CS5 x64 really made it better but if I have too many layered sequences I have to reduce the monitoring to 1/4 res.  I run Windows7 x64.

  • Frustrated with my new g4mx440 vtp video card

hi all. i just built a new system (first time) and i have been having some trouble with my video. i have an athlon 1800+, kt3 ultra motherboard, g4mx440 vtp video card, 512 mb 333 ddr ram and a 350 watt ps. it will work for a while fine (1 day to a week or two) then when i boot up it goes through the windows xp logo and the screen goes black with just a small dash in the upper right corner. i have tried several drivers, (vgasave is about all that works after this) and the only way i have been able to fix this is to reinstall windows. Anyone have any suggestions. i am pulling my hair out.
     ?(

    harlmagic,
If you are running WinXP, get the Detonator 4, 40.41 drivers from the nVidia Site and the latest 4in1 drivers from Via.
Check your power supply to make sure it can handle the load with an Athlon and a GF4.   Not all 350W power supplies deliver the juice as advertized.
Then get a new HD Ribbon as Assaf suggests.  T
he only other thing would be to leave the computer as a virgin install and do not load and programs for a week or so.  Just surf the net etc and see if you still have the problem.
If are are good, start adding programs and see if it corrupts then.
    Good Luck,
    Richard

  • New MACpro Configuration - Video Cards

    hello,
i am trying to configure my macPro online, my question is about the VideoCards, is it better to have 4x the Nvidia Card on the ATI with 512 MB??
I am mainly using Apeture, After effects,Motion and PS.
    What should i do?
    Thank you

the only main reason to have more than 1 video card is if you need to hook up more than 2 monitors.
there is a minority of users that know how to and can utilize two of the 7300 in SLI while running Windows in Bootcamp, but the performance of the SLI'd 7300 is much much less than the single ATI X1900.
the X1900 is much more powerful than the 7300, so if you are going to do a lot of work in Apeture and Motion, and you aren't going to use 3 or more monitors, then the right choice for you is the ATI X1900 hands down.
If you were only the occassional Aperture / Motion user, then you would not see a day to day difference between the 7300 and the X1900, as the faster card really only shows its muscle with certain tasks, it does not help while performing more mundane duties.

  • IMac video card is busted again. Options?

I have a 27" iMac purchased in 2011. Since this January I've had to take it to Apple Retail Store for video card replacement twice, and now it's busted again. I don't want them to put in another refurbished card and likely break down on me in a short time. So far it's costed me 6 days without my computer which I use for work.
My question is what options do I have to prevent having this problem again and again?
I do get free repairs via Apple Care but I shouldn't have to deal with so much down time. I feel that I should be compensated somehow, or at least be guaranteed a new, not refurbished, video card.

first, call AppleCare and complain in a polite manner so they can document the situation, also have them make an appointment for you in the genius bar and have them give you the case #.  Then go to the appointment and ask for a new one after you plead your case about how much you have been inconvenienced.  I think you have a pretty strong case.
