IMac 24" 3.06GHz mysterious crashes

Hi there,
I've been experiencing rather worrying crashes of late. My machine is running 10.6.1 and lately when starting from Sleep mode, I get the spinning ball of doom. I try to force quit the applications running and nothing. I then force a restart at which point it can't find the system, and if I start it in Target Disc mode, nothing appears on my other computer. The next step I've been following is to start up with the TechTools DVD and it finds no errors. I reboot from my Snow Leopard DVD and use Disk Utility, repairing both the disc and permissions.
This started happening last week, so I did a Time Machine back up and formatted the drive and restored, but it's now starting to do it again. Is this behaviour that anyone recognises, or can anyone recommend what other steps I might take to remedy this? It's starting to get frustrating!
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers,
Dan

Ok, despite what Techtool and Hardware Test are telling you this sounds like the classic syptoms of a failing Hard Drive. From your description I can't tell if your Mac is the early 2008 or 2009. If it is the 2009 it's still under warranty and you should take in to an Apple Store or another AASP. If it is the 2008 you can very easily replace it yourself.

  • FAULTY Apple iMAC 27" 3.06Ghz

Hi, im interested in buying this iMac on eBay - here is the sellers description of the faults, from the sound of it the seller is not the nicest of people so i apologise on his behalf for any foul language he has written,
So im wondering if i was to buy this, is it easy to fix? what would i need? what would i need to do? i was wondering maybe just changing the hard drive and re installing everything?
    FAULTY Apple iMAC 27” 3.06Ghz
I bought this very, very expensive, stupid computer “BRAND NEW” from Apple UK in April 2010. It was fine for months but then, very occasionally, I got the messages:
“Safari has quit unexpectedly”  or  “Safari plugin has quit unexpectedly”
    Then I started getting:
“Word has quit unexpectedly”…..ggrrrrrr  usually when I hadn’t saved my work for a while.
Other programs started doing it, usually at the most annoying moment causing me to lose my work.
A couple of months ago, just after the warranty ran out it got worse and worse so my son wiped the drive and
re-installed from Time Machine… whatever that is.
No improvement. Then every few days the screen started going grey and telling me to re-start. I took it to someone who knows how to fix computers. After two weeks he returned it and told me it was a cable fault. It was OK for a week, now the AIRPORT does not work and says “Airport Card Not Installed”
!!!!! YES IT IS INSTALLED !!!!
    and programs are crashing again.

    Hi,
I would stay away!  It has been listed as faulty so you will get no chance of a refund, also are you able to work on these yourself? Changing a hard drive on these is not a novice task. I would also assume the seller has no apple care and thus you will not be able to get any.
If he took it somewhere that knows what they are doing then they must have checked the drive? thats the first thing you would do before even opening the iMac, and he doesn't say which cable was faulty?
Worst case its the logic board and thats £££££££££ its not worth it!
If it was me and it was cheap then yes i may take a gamble but then i don't have to give it to someone to repair, i can do that myself. Don't buy it to then pay money on a repair, thats my best advise.

  • IMac 27" 3.06ghz white screen for 40 seconds on start up before grey apple

when i start up my iMac 27" 3.06GHZ i get a white screen for 40 seconds before the grey apple appears and it boots up.
If anyone else is experiencing this or has a solution it would be great if you could reply.
    Cheers.

    Hi guys,
I'm new to the forum, i have recently bought a new imac 27" i7, i don't have any problems with white screens when starting up, the imac runs great, however when i try playing any games thats when the problems start. i installed X-plane it first worked without any problems but not in full resolution, i upgraded the resolution to the maximum imac resolution and from that moment every time i start the game the screen turns white you can hear the imac starting the game and even for a while sound appears, but then after 30 seconds the programs fails and you get a typical apple message.
i have also tried installing need for speed, here i didn't change anything to the graphics however the problem occurred straight away. white screen then the sound of the games menu and crash. did anyone else have this problem? is there a solution to this? i would like to apologize if this matter has been discussed in earlier forums. However i hope there is someone whom is able to give me a helping hand here. Whats wrong???? thanks ruben

I believe that insufficient RAM may be the source of some of your problems. If you have a RAM of somewhere 4 to 8GB, you will experience smoother computing. 3GB doesn't seem right, so you might want to learn more by going to this site:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/drammemory.aspx
I don't know what know what's happening with your optical drive, but it seems you use your drive quite a bit. In that case, look into a lens cleaner for your machine. It's inexpensive, works quite well.
I hope you'll post here with your results!

Unfortunately, that drive is long gone, probably back to the mfr. Drives are not returned when they are exchanged. You can go by and ask them, but the chances are slim to none.

  • IMac 27" 3.06GHz 240GB SSD / 2TB WD Black Caviar 16GB SUPER SLOW

Hi Apple or other fellow Apple Users,
I have the iMac 27" 3.06GHz and was on Snow Leopard. Was amazingly snappy and fast but I wanted more.
Upgraded RAM to 16GB and soon the 1TB filled up and was slowing me down.
I took out the optical drive and installed a Runcore 240GB 2.5" SSD with a Caddy holding the drive using the optical bay's connection (with an adapter of course)
Replaced the 1TB with a WD 2TB Black Caviar as my Data drive.
Freshly installed OSX Lion on the 240GB SSD and then moved the Users document folders linked to the 2TB drive.  Apps are installed on the 240GB SSD and Trim support is switched "on".  Ran fine (but not super fast like it should) for awhile but now after some usage, it slows down to the point where typing letters takes about 10 seconds to come out, spining wheel appears virtually everywhere, Flash pages loadings are extremely laggy.
I am a photographer and use Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop CS5 and a load of other graphic applications.  They run quite slow after about 1 hr of usage and then to the point where it's unbearable.
Usually speeds back up after reboot, but then super slow again after some usage.
I believe it has something to do with the Fans that after SSD installtions, causes them to run constantly, so the iMac is constantly cool around 36 degrees and hottest at 41 degrees.
Done Repaired permissions, rebooted to safe mode and have plenty of hd space.  Updated everything and OSX 10.7.2
Any ideas how to speed it back up?
    Thanks

How did you manage to get the SSD and the 2TB drive in your new Imac? OWC said you couldn't update those internal parts. I am too looking to get an Imac 27" but I want to add my own SSD and 2TB drive similar to what you did. did you buy the imac with this set up already from apple? do you have to get the SSD/Harddrive combo from apple to have the parts needed for the replacement? thanks in advance.

If you want to sync it to the iPad from that Mac, you need to upgrade it to at least 10.5.8.
If you want to copy the music to another Mac, you don't. Move the iTunes folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar over as you would any other folder. If you put it somewhere other than the Music folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to that location.

  • 64 bit and the iMac 24",  3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory

    Hello,
I am confused about the whole 32 bit 64 bit situation
I have installed Snow leopard on my new iMac 24", 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory.
Can this machine run 64bit? I thought it was a 32 bit machine.
Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Most Apple application run in 64 bit mode no matter what. Third party apps will if they are designed to. The unix kernel defaults to 32 bit mode for compatibility reasons. You can switch it to 64 if you like. I tried it and lost my Kensington mouse driver. Switching back to 32 brought it back. There is very little reason a normal user would need to run in 64 bit mode... but dangit I WANT to! Sadly my extra mouse buttons are more important...

  • My iMac Seagate 1T hard drive crashed. I replaced it with a Western Digital 1T hard drive. Where can I get the Lion OS?

My iMac Seagate 1T hard drive crashed. I replaced it with a Western Digital 1T hard drive. Where can I get the Lion OS?
The iMac comes up with a ? in a folder, even after starting with Option/Command/R keys pressed.
    Please help.

Call Apple to purchase replacement discs or order a copy of Snow Leopard from Apple's Online Store. Follow these instructions:
Drive Preparation and Install Snow Leopard
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. When completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard. Once you boot from Snow Leopard you should open Software Update and install all the available updates required. After you complete this and restart the computer open the App Store application in the Dock or Applications folder.
    8. Sign into the App Store with your Apple ID and password. Purchase and download Lion.
    9. After Lion's installer downloads, install Lion.

FYI: This is a brand new 8-core 2.66 MacPro and I migrated via firewire target-disk mode from a PowerMac G5 running 10.4.11.
It also looks as if the first error occured at Apr 8 01:05:24 and all the rest is just a follow-up on that one. At that time BOINC was running several projects.
And: This seems to be a known issue as lined out in this discussion: 10.5: Avoid a direct screen saver activation issue

Mavericks doesn't include iMovie. It's a separate download from the App Store.
Log into the App Store and download it.

  • Possible solution to the mysterious crashes

I have just been contacted by an Adobe engineer trying to get
    to the
bottom of the mysterious crashes that appear to be connected
    with the
clock change in Europe. Try deleting the
    WinFileCache[series_of_random_numbers].dat file in your
    configuration
    folder.
On Win XP, it's located at:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
    Data\Adobe\Dreamweaver
    9\Configuration
    In Vista, it's at:
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver
    9\Configuration
After removing the WinFileCache, scripts that previously
    crashed
    Dreamweaver CS3 acted normally again.
This *appears* to be the solution, but has not yet been
    officially
    confirmed.

Try using the code below in a new PHP file. You should see
    the crash, if
you didn't already delete your FileCache.dat file. From what
    we've seen so
far, the crashes are limited to PHP files with dynamic list
    menus.
We can reproduce the problem with PHP files, but we're not
    able to reproduce
the problem with ASP files or any other file types. Can
    people that are
seeing this problem with non-PHP files post their code so we
    can reproduce
    the problem here?

  • IMac 24" 3.06Ghz crashes intermittently, causes endless restarts

    Hi All,
I have a 24-inch, 3.06 Ghz Intel iMac that has been crashing intermittently for months now. The crashes seem to happen at mostly random times, but occur more frequently during processor-intensive tasks. Specifically, the crashes almost always happen when I'm playing a game (World of Warcraft), doing a system update thatbrequires a restart or doing more than one thing at a time in iTunes (syncing my iPad, listening to music and downloading multiple podcasts).
When the crashes happen, everything freezes up and I get the spinning beach ball. No applications are responsive and I'm unable to bring up the Force Quit window. At this point, I have no choice but to do a hard shutdown (by holding the power button). For the next several minutes after the shutdown, starting up the computer causes a series of endless restarts on a blank black screen. The only way to get the computer to start up normally again is to leave it off for a few minutes. Then it starts up without a problem.
I'm stumped. Thank you all for any help you can provide.
    - Mike

The CPU is fine. The HDD is pretty warm - 120F would be more comfortable (mine is 123F with nothing much going on), but the fan is trying to keep it down so the system is doing what it should.
If your HD stays that hot constantly, rather than only when being very active (reindexing Spotlight, running a backup, or other continuous activity) then I'd start to worry some. Generally HDs don't like going over 130F.

  • Refurbished iMac Mid 2011 continues to crash after clean install of Mac OS 10.8 .2 on cleaned HD

I purchase a refurbished 27 inch iMac 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5 with Mac OS 10.7.3 installed in September 2012. I got the free upgrade to Mountain Lion OS 10.8.2 shortly afterwards. In December 2012, the computer started crashing occasionally while watching videos on the web. It deteriorated to the point that the iMac would crash while it was on, but not being used at the moment of the crash. After calling Apple support, they suggested I take the machine into an Apple store to the Genius bar to have the hardware checked and tested.
I took it into the Apple store, and several diagnostic tests were run on the hardware of the computer. The technician told me the good new was nothing was wrong with the hardware. The bad news was the technician believed it was a software issue. He asked how I got all my data and applications on the computer. I told him I had used migration assistant with the back-up drive of my Mac Book Pro with Mac OS 10.5.8. He told me to never use Migration Assisitant or Transfer to get data or applications from an old computer to a new computer.
Why is this even suggested in the set up process by Apple if it can cause issues? I have owned various Apple computers since my first Mac SE in 1984.  I have always used Migration Assistant to upgrade from an old computer, and never had any problems. Thanks for the heads up, Apple!
AS suggested, I cleaned my iMac hard drive completely with Disk utilities. I originally had partitioned my 1 TB drive to have a boot up for the existing OS 10.7 Lion, and another partition for the new Mac OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. This was suggested by Apple Support. I wanted to be sure I liked the new Mountain Lion, and that all my applications would continue to work. I was unable to erase the partitions before reinstalling the OS software from the Recoverry disk. I wanted to reinstall the OS and my data on the Imac the way it was delivered (1 single TB partition) when purchased. With the help of Apple Support, I was able to erase the partions, but had to reinstall the OS from internet recovery. The internet recovery process installed the original OS 10 .7. I decided to install Mountain Lion 10.8.2 before getting all my data and applications copied to the iMac. I used my Mountain Lion Flash drive install disk to do the upgrade.
Than as suggested by the Genius bar Technician, I created 2 new folders on my desktop. One folder was to copy applications from my back up drive, and the other was to copy all my data (music, pictures, doccuments etc.). The technician told me this could eliminate problems by moving everything by hand not any application to empty desktop folders first before putting items in their correct folder on the iMac hard drive.
After finishing copying all the items from back up, I moved the applications from the desktop folder (named applications from BU) into the hard drive application folder. I tested all the applications to be sure thay would open. Some had multiple user issues, and Photoshop cs4 wouldn't open or reinstall from the original downloaded .dmg. I contacted Adobe support to see what to do about Photoshop.
I was getting ready to follow Adobe's fix instructions, and the iMac crashed again just as before. The Genius Bar technician said a "kernal" message was what the error display was called. After starting the computer, I took a "picture" of the crash report before sending it to Apple. All my data (music, pictures, doccuments etc.) I copied from my back up drive remains in a folder (Doccuments From BU) on my desktop. I have not even bothered to boot up the iMac the last few days. I'm hoping it doesn't crash before I post this message.
Below is a list of the applications from my back up drive that I have moved from the desktop folder to the Application folder:
    Adobe Bridge CS4 (Version 3.0.0.464)
Adobe CS 4 (No Version, won't open, reinstall of software failed.)
    Disk Warrior (Version 4.4)
Jawbone Updater (No Version, need to plug in Bluetooth speaker to get update for speaker software)
Microsoft Office 2011 (Can't open, need to update multple users permission)
    Quicken 2007_Lion Version (Version 16.1.2)
    Turbo Tax (for  2006 - 2011)
To say I am tired of investing all my time and energy doing all of the above work on a computer that I bought only 4 months ago is an understatement!!! I do not enjoy spending what little free time I have trouble shooting an expensive recently puchased item that is supposed to make my life easier.
As I stated earlier, I have only owned Apple Computers since 1984. I supported all their products based on their innovative, trouble free operating systems, and the reliability and stability of their hardware. This frustrating experience is changing my opinion. I'm wondering if the company should consider changing their name to another fruit ... Lemon. Maybe, the operating system should be called Lemon and Mountain Lemon.
Any help or suggestions to fix this "crash" problem would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, one question & one suggestion...
What possible things are connected at home but not at the store, inlude every cable, etc.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • IMac running slow and frequently crashing since installing Mavericks. Any useful info in this log?

Since installing Mavericks some time ago, applications have become slow to open, proccesses have slowed and, well, eveything has slowed down some. Also, almost every day, sometimes more than once, the iMac will freeze for a second, then reboot itself. I've tried searching for similar posts but haven't found an answer yet. I did open the console (which, I confess, I don't understand) and I'm getting lots of messages. But, as I've never checked before, I have no idea whether any of them are normal. Here's a small section:

Thanks in advance for anyone's insight!

Ok, so I think I got rid of everything you suggested, Arthur. No real improvement in speed, but the computer's four and a half years old, so...  I should just be satisfied if it doesn't crash every day. That would be an improvement. I'll have to wait a few days to see. I've run Etrecheck again just incase you see something else that might help. Thanks.
