IMac (24" Aluminium, Mid 2008) Freezing and Graphical Glitches

Hi all,
I'm having to write this on my MacBook as my iMac developed serious problems yesterday evening. Nothing new has been installed recently, and I was just listening to music on iTunes when I noticed that my iMac seemed to have frozen, although music was still playing. After the song finished it switched to the next track, but I could not control anything. The screen developed graphical glitches in the form of a lot of speckles. All I could do was hold in the button on the back and turn it off.
I've tried turning it on a few times today and the problem still persists. I've tried resetting the PRAM but that hasn't fixed it. Myself and my housemate seem to think it's a graphics card issue (NVidia GeForce 8800GS), but the problem doesn't occur when booted in Safe Mode and also doesn't occur when in Windows XP under boot camp. My iMac is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, and I have no idea why this has suddenly happened. I swear this has happened once before, but I think the PRAM reset was what I did back then and it worked.
A few weeks ago I upgraded the iMac from 2GB RAM to 4GB RAM but it's been absolutly fine until now. Could a RAM issue be to blame for this, and could it take so long to suddenly emerge?
Thanks in advance for and help or insight anyone could offer. I know there are a lot of posts about this but I know some symptoms are slightly different so I wanted this post to be specific to my case.

+I guess the big question is whether the iMac dvi port is output and input.+
Output only on that model iMac. You'd best borrow a real monitor for initial configuration of the Mini. Once it is configured and you've turned on Screen Sharing, you can access the Mini remotely from the iMac.

  • IMac crashes on startup or freezes with graphical glitches

    Hi,
My early 2009 24" iMac suddenly crashed a few days ago, while browsing on the internet with no major app running. It did so with graphical glitches, like coloured dots. Since then, it would always shut down suddenly every time I restart. It shuts down right after the Apple logo and the wheel, once even reaching the user selection screen for a second, then shutting down before I could even move.
I started it in safe mode and ran all the checks, it says the volume is fine. When checking disk permissions, it did give me a few error messages but let me do the repairs. Weird thing is when I ran the disk permission verification again it showed me the same permission, as if they hadn't been repaired.
Now I backup everything and tried to reinstall OS X but to no avail, it kept doing the same thing.
So I formatted the disk, zeroed it out and reinstalled Mavericks. Same thing keeps happening, which seem to indicate some kind of hardware failure, right?
On one occasion it did start up but after a few seconds it froze, with heavy glitches (see picture attached - sorry it's upside down but it doesn't make a huge difference anyway!).
I upgraded the iMac with new RAM a year ago or so, and 2 years ago it had a hard drive failure, so I replaced the HD. Never had any problems in general, apart from when I had to replace the HD of course. It's always been very stable and well behaved.
Any idea what the problem could be? I'm not looking forward to having to fork out £1500 for a new one...

http://www.apple.com/uk/legal/statutory-warranty/ may be worth reading before you visit Apple. I don't thibk you'd be the first to argue that an expensive, quality computer ought to last more than 5 years, albeit that say, mechanical hard drives inside might need replacing.

  • IMac 24" Aug. 2008 freezes and crashes

I have clean-installed Mountain Lion, upgraded RAM, run TechTools Pro and disk repair. Problem subsides briefly, then returns.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for crash or panic reports. If you don't see that heading, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. A crash report has a name ending in ".crash" and a panic report has a name ending in ".panic" Select the most recent report from each subcategory and post the entire contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • HT1846 My iMac 24" is mid 2008 and I have just instaled Win7 Pro 64 bits. All went well execpt...

    Hello everybody,
My iMac 24" is mid 2008 and I have just instaled Win7 Pro 64 bits. The windows installation went very well, except wen I starte to use the Boot Camp CD for the drivers and then I have this error "Boot Camp x64 is unsupporteded..." So I had to instal everything in the CD one by one and went quite well. The only thing that I can not install is the Boot Camp itself! So I do not have any windows control over the Boot Camp. How can I solve this issue?
    Thanks

Follow the steps in this guide...

  • PowerBook Constant Freeze and Graphics Problems

I have a Powerbook 12" 1.33Ghz Leopard 10.5.2 , I star to work in anything and in a few minutes its freezes and appears a Kernel Panic or de backend System Text start to output reports overwriting the last graphic image.. here a picture..
    http://cyberkiko3d.com/down/photo.jpg
I remove the memory card, and stills hapening..
I want to know is this is just a kernel problem that it stops formating or is a hardware problem involving the LogicBoard or Graphic Card..
    Thanks

I guess memory can fail over time. I just haven't experienced it myself. (Or heard of it, but it is a piece of hardware).
You can test your RAM by either using your system installation / restore discs (the original grey discs that came with your machine) and pop in Disc 1 and reboot the computer holding down the OPTION key and from there, you will get the choice for Apple Hardware Test, which you can use to do a basic test of your RAM.
Second, if you ever signed up for AppleCare and got the TechTool Deluxe disc that comes with it, you can use that too for a more extensive RAM test. Just be careful not to use it to diagnose anything with your hard drive. Just use it for RAM. (Be warned, as their is an incompatibility with Tiger that can ruin your drive. Though I see you have Leopard, so don't even know if it works).
The other test you can do, as suggested by many of the top users in these forums is "Rember" which tests your RAM and should let you know what's going on. I used it once after using it as a suggestion (taking someone else's suggestion and using it for my own testing) and it showed the second module of memory that I bought on eBay--the one that doesn't cause kernel panics--to pass.
You can find that here: [http://www.kelleycomputing.net:16080/rember>
Also, when you get your RAM replacement, I highly recommend getting Apple OEM suppliers such as modules from Samsung, Hynix, or Micron (manufactured by Crucial). They should be trouble free.
I say should because the Samsung 1GB module I bought for my 12-inch PowerBook from OtherWorld Computing has worked flawlessly for almost two years now. The one I was talking about previously, that crashed my 15-inch machine? A Samsung one as well. So, it is true that these Aluminum PowerBook G4s are picky about the RAM installed.

I forgot to ask you... what brand RAM do you have installed? (If you know and it is labeled).

  • Imac intel core duo (2008) crashed and wont reboot after Mountain Lion upgrade

    Hi can anyone help?
Hi, my imac was loaded with Snow Leopard and I upgraded to Mountain Lion a few days ago and today when I got back from leaving it a few hours the screen went funny!!! (see pic) and it wont reboot. The same screen appears straight away when restarting. I have tried holding down the shift for safe start but it didnt work and also a nv/ram pram reset (but only heard one 'mac sound')
I have my old snow leopard disk..............somewhere!!! but I'm not sure if I can boot from them if I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion via the app store download??
I didnt do a boot disk! (yes I know) or a back up (yep again...I know!) so if anyone has any ideas on how to help :-) I'd be very grateful!!
    Thanks Melanie
PS is the problem called a Kernel Panic????

I'm afraid my next piece of advice you won't like. I think you need to erase the drive and reinstall Mountain Lion from scratch.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on
the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero
Data option to one-pass. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Momentary Pauses and Graphical Glitches

I'm having the following issues with my mac pro that I use at work. I also have the same specification machine at home without the problem.
1.) During a cold boot (after being off over night) two of the screens become absolutely garbled. Both of the LCD's are connected to an NVidia 7300GT thats plugged into the x16 PCI Express port. I also have another 7300GT that drives an additional monitor that doesn't have any issues. This happens when I boot to OS/X, and when I boot to Windows XP. However, on XP it doesn't happen till I login.
2.) When the machine is warm everything seems okay most of the time. Under OS/X it will occasionally hang where nothing does anything, but then after a second or two everything will be fine. There are little graphics hickups occasionally that go away if I move a window over them. Under XP every great once in a while the screen will become garbled and it will lock up. No blue screen or any error messages. I don't believe its ever the screen connected to the video card in the X8 slot.
These are the steps that I've taken to rectify the problem, but they've all failed.
A.) I did the hardware diagnostics and it reported everything as peachy. I ran both the quick test, and the extended test. It DID however seem rather unresponsive during sections of the testing, but that might be normal.
B.) I reset the PRAM/NVRAM. FYI - it only beeped once and rebooted.
C.) I pulled out the Video card on the X16 lane, and replaced it with the one that was on a X8 pci express lane.
D.) I used the video card from step C on the PCI Express X8 lane, and didn't have a video card in the X16 lane. I don't remember if this test worked because I soon had issues booting it. Apparently it didn't like this configuration.
E.) I removed a hard drive that I put in recently (couple months ago). I can't remember having any of the issues before I put it in. The hard drive seemed fine though. No errors, clicking or any strangeness.
F.) I reinstalled OS/X using a brand new disk, and I also installed Vista on it. Vista showed no signs of issues, and the brand new install of OS/X 10.5.6 still had the occasionally pausing. I haven't tried a cold boot with Vista yet. I imagine the graphics will become garbled. I also haven't used Vista enough to experience the every once in awhile (1 or 2 times a day) garbled screen lockup that I had with XP. I have used Vista enough to know it doesn't pause like OS/X does on the machine. I know OS/X doesn't pause like that normally.
G.) I reconfigured the PCI express lanes so that three of them are X8. I haven't tested the cold boot, but OS/X still hangs occasionally. I haven't been able to determine any pattern to the hanging.
H.) There is no indication in the console of whats making OS/X momentarily freeze
I just want to see if there is anything left to do before I start swapping parts with my Mac Pro at home. There really is only the memory (maybe the cards the memory is on as well), mother board and the power supply. My bet at this point is the logic board.

Update - Despite my feelings that it wouldn't work I decided to try the Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT, and to my surprise it worked.
It solved the issue of momentary pauses within OS/X 10.5.6
It solved the problem I had where 10.5.7 wasn't working at all (it was nightmarishly slow)
It solved the occasional graphical glitches within XP
It solved the cold boot graphics/system freezes I was having within OS/X, and XP
It solved Vista's issue with the graphics driver crashing, and reloading a few times a day.(I never turned it off once vista was getting me by).
I find it really bizarre considering that I have two 7300 GT's and I tried both of them individually in the system with no luck.
I haven't tried putting one of them back in combination with the 8800, but that's my next step. I do want support for 3 monitors.
If that fails I'll try the questionable 7300GTs in my home mac pro. I have a 7300GT in it, and it's still working fine.
If the questionable ones fail than I'll feel a lot better. I don't care about a video card, but I do care that my mac pro is working without issue.
The only surprise in this is how well Vista works with crappy hardware. I mean it just kept running right throw the glitches. It would tell me about it, and where it occurred, and after a reloading the graphics driver it kept on going.

  • Ipad air lagging and graphic glitching

Ipad air lagging while playing games like temple run and candy crush, the graphic seems like glitching and the moving animation so slow compare to previous edition,,,,idk wht cause tis problem and now im waiting for new ios update hope it will fix it! Dissapointed.

I took it to genius bar and they replaced it with a new Ipad Air after getting them agreed to the graphic glitch. A more accurate description is the graphics are too jerky (as in not smooth). They agreed after running and comparing the same game (minion rush) in a new Ipad Air side-by-side. And the replaced Ipad Air began the same issue only after I got home. It came with 7.0.4 pre-installed, so there's no way I can know if it's the new iOS issue with Ipad Air or not.
I've compared it against other devices including GS4, note 8, Iphone 5s and even Ipad 3 and 4, where both Minion rush and gold star run smoothly. I tried to install other high graphic games and began to notice the problem is limited to these 2 apps only. Asphalt 8 graphics is too jerky itselfs to give it a real feel animation, so it's hard to judge in it. I'm wondering if it's just the app problems although both of them are claimed to be compatible with Ipad Air on their app store pages. But if it's really a universal problem with the app, I shouldn't be the only one Ipad Air owner facing it. There should be reports/complaints in forums/app comment boxes, shouldn't it?
If any of you own an Ipad Air too, can you please try to install these 2 games and reply me back coz I need to know whether this is a hardware problem requiring replacement or not.
Golf Star is most obvious when the power gauge moves up/down when u swing. You can compare it against any other later devices (apple or android)
It's most prominent in Minion Rush, from the video that comes on the very first run to throughout game play. The graphic is not smooth and too jerky to the point that even avoiding obstacles becomes too hard.
Please include your Ipad model and iOS too when you report back.
    Thank you

  • Imac 21.5 mid 2010 freezes is very slow enable to select anything.

    Hi,
Could anyone help with a problem I think I've overloaded my memory on my mac because ever since I transferred my iPhoto library to desktop it copied 18000 photos disk utility says I have 150gb of 1tb free, would like a method so I don't have to lose all files.
    Thank
    Rich

    Hi!
First of all, thanks for the compliment.
I totally forgot about the RAM upgrade...
It was done half a year (a bit more) after I bought the iMac. I think I can safely say that the freezes began four or five months after the upgrade.
I see discrepances between the required specs and my RAM specs that I didn't see years ago...
    My RAM specs:
    204-Pin DDR3
    1333Mhz
    PC3-10664
    Unbuffered
    Non-ECC
    1.5V
    4GB Module
Could this be causing the freezes? I can just pull out the RAM module and see if it no longer freezes, but like I said, It happens very randomly, and not a lot of times. Unfortunately, I need that 4GB module, but if you think that it could be the problem, I can easily buy another one (this time with the right specs), luckily they are not very expensive.
I'll be waiting your feedback. Thanks!

The problem is likely due to the discreet GPU failing. Download gfxCardStatus 2.3 and use it to disable the GPU. This is a temporary workaround until you get your motherboard replaced.

  • 15" Macbook Pro (Early 2008) Freezing and Acting Strange

    Hello All,
I don't have the original disks, and cannot run a hardware test, so no idea what is wrong.  My computer will freeze frequently, often times when I am trying to do multiple things, watch video (flash like hulu), or try to access the items like wifi, battery, date/time or spotlight at the top of my screen. The computer also occassionaly will not respond to the trackpad or keyboard.  The sound icon also frequently X's out, and I cannot adjust the volume from my keyboard.
I have tried an unsuccessful clean install of Lion, was able to recover from Time Capsule, and it was behaving like this even with snow leopard.  Actually, ever since getting a new Logic Board from apple on a previous service. (Sent in for a top case issue, and for some reason they replaced the top case and logic board...)
I called Apple Care the other day, they reccomended the clean install, but the computer is out of warranty.  My only saving grace would be if this IS actually a logic board issue from there replacement and they were willing to service it again based on that.
Anybody experience anything similar or have any ideas?
    Thanks.

Please boot in safe mode and test. Same problems? After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode.)

  • Computer Freezes and Graphics Pixilate, and then System reboots, whats

I'll be in the middle of a game or doing something else, and then my computer will freeze up and then a random pixilated color pattern shows up on my screen and then all of sudden the system reboots.
In order to reverse the problem the power has to be turned all the way off and then back on again.
    I have:
    MSI KT3 Ultra Mother Board
Gainward GeForce4 ti 4200 AGP Video Card
    Antec 480 Watt Power Supply
    768 MB Memory
    Windows XP
Any idea what may be going on, feel free to drop me a note.

  • Problem with my mac freezing and screen glitching?

I have the 2013 15 inch retina Macbook Pro and I have been having a problem with it lately. Whenever I use safari, my browser is freezing constantly. Its is only when I use safari, not any other applications, such as Microsoft word. Normally, I wouldn't consider this a big issue, but it gets worse. When I don't navigate on my computer and let it rest for a minute or so (while running safari and sometimes other applications) this screen pops up:
I have not dropped my computer, nor done anything to cause any damage to it. It hasn't moved from my desk and I am clueless as to what the problem could be.

    Hi patrickk9,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
If you are continuing to see this type of display distortion on your MacBook, I would suggest working through the troubleshooting steps outlined in the attached article.

  • Front Row Freezes and has Glitches with DVDs

I already posted this in another forum, but someone suggested I post it here.
Whenever I start a DVD using Front Row, about 1 in every 5 times the screen will remain black and nothing will happen, and I can't even force quit to get out, I have to do a force shut down. This is infuriating when all I want to do is watch a DVD and I have to restart the whole computer. What could be causing this? When the thing actually DOES play dvds, the screen has glitches, like pink and green random images that resembles when an old Nintendo system is crashing. Please help if you can!! Thanks in advance.

I sure haven't. I must note, also, that it's not just with DVDs. Video files on the hard drive have the problem, as well.
Someone mentioned that the VGA dongle might be the culprit but that doesn't make sense. The computer with an external display works fine until Front Row is used. And, as I stated earlier, it doesn't seem to matter with my situation if I have an external display connected or not.
My personal opinion is that there's a conflict with some third-party codecs on the system. For example, I have installed the Perian components and ffmpeg. Since I have some free time this weekend, I'll be removing these and see if the problems persist.
