Imac 24 aluminum with 750GB drive freezing

I have a new 24inch - 3GB 2.8GHZ and 750GB drive iMAC. I have 5 other C2D systems. The new one locks up from time to time - odd as the mouse moves but nothing else. have to remove power cord sometimes the button wont do it either.
I dont think its the drive - i have heard its the dog ATI video card that is doing it. The drivers are painfully slow compared to my other 24" prior generation 24inch imac with 7600 Nvida. not only are they slow it also looks like they are buggy. Why they would go to a slower and buggier graphics chip? Macs should be better in this area and this is a step back

I had the same problem, I just purchased a new 2.8extreme 750gb iMac and it froze up on me!!
The mouse pointer would work and the dock would enlarge but could not select anything....
Now the scroll wheel(scroll down) has packed up on my wireless mouse....arrrghhh!!
COME ON APPLE!!

  • Finder is really slow ( 15 sec.) after mavericks update on brand new iMac 27" WITH fusion drive...

When looking up files it's fine, but when trying to save or open anything through ANY program, i.e. Adobe CS6 programs, Microsoft Word, but also Apple software, finder is really slow (15 sec. or more of the same spinning beach ball) after the OSX Mavericks update on my brand new iMac 27" WITH fusion drive... This ***** really bad because it totally disturbs the smooth workflow I bought the iMac for in the first place...
    Any suggestions?
Already tried 'clearing the plist file' through terminal; didn't work... Rebooting (obviously), didn't work.
Will there be a fix soon?
It's costing me way to much time waiting for the finder to show it's content when working.
Any official word from Apple on this?

I had a similar problem.  Tried repairing disk permissions, tried cleaning up with onyx and applejack with no luck.  Finally what did work was simply starting up in safe mode (hold shift key down after restart) and it sorted itself out
    Hope this works for you

  • New 27" iMac; Glitch with DVD drive

Just got my new refurbished 27" iMac yesterday(my first mac computer ever) and after starting up and playing around few things, I tried to play DVD and it would not accept any DVDs including the setup dvd that came with iMac.
After talking with tech support they asked me to powered down and take out the power plug for few second and restarting the mac solved the issue with DVD.
Not sure how did powering down and restarting helped with DVD in this case. Should I be worried about this DVD drive?
    Thanks,
    Jeegar.

I guess at least it is now working - I have just bought one myself and just been shipped. First refurb Mac i have ever bought so fingers crossed...

  • Front Row a complete failure on new 24" iMac aluminum with Leopard.

One of the features I have enjoyed on my recent Macs, Front Row, is now one of the biggest disappointments on my latest iMac. Each movie will start by showing the usual progress bar extending to the extreme right (2.29 minutes,it would seem,) but then the actual movie clip stops and starts, sometimes in ten second increments. While all this is going on, the progress bar will indicate repeated progress out to the extreme right end of the bar, but it is then followed by the small segments of the clip, sometimes as many as ten segments until it finally reaches the end and puts me out of my misery. Anyone else experiencing this or has Steve singled me out for some rather cruel and unusual punishment ?

The strange thing is that Front Row works just fine on my Apple TV.
The application on the Apple TV is called "Back Row" inside Apple. I don't think this will have anything to do with Front Row on your Mac. (Except for the fact that both might share some music files, movies and pictures from your Mac.) But if your movies files do play on the Apple TV, it might indicate a problem with iTunes, QuickTime or Front Row on your Mac. All of those parts need to work together for Front Row to function correctly.

  • Installing from iLife CD on an iMac G3 with Combo Drive

I am helping my son to upgrade to iPhoto 4 on his iMac G3. I sent him the iLife 2004 installation CD, not realizing that he had a combo drive. The install program tells him he must use the DVD. Is there anyway to bypass this? If not, I guess I'll have to send him the DVD.
    Thanks
    iMac G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    hello grk,
    I installed iPhoto 4 manually.
Try this: insert CD, try to find the iPhoto Package
(I guess it was the "resolve alias" on the main installer icon)
    open the iPhoto installer directly

  • Which 750GB drives used in an XServe RAID?

Could somebody with an XServe RAID with 750GB drives please tell me, which drives are used in this configuration? You can look it up in the XServe RAID admin utility, under Arrays and Drives when selecting a drive in "drive" mode.

  • Upgrading 250GB drives to 750GB drives

We have an XServe RAID that is a few years old. It has 8 drive modules with 250GB drives and 6 blanks. We'd like to upgrade all available slots to 750GB drives.
Can I fill the blanks with 750GB drive modules and fill the existing modules with new 750GB drives and rebuild from there? I have read that I need to update the firmware to recognize the larger capacity. What about the controller module and fiber card. Will it work with the existing pieces or will I need to upgrade those as well?
    Any other suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks!

Any advice on types and brands for the drives?
    Apple.
Apple doesn't manufacture drives. Last I checked only Seagate makes 750GB PATA drives, everyone else in the business seems to make only SATA drives that size or bigger.
Unfortunately nobody makes 1TB drives that are PATA, so it looks like the current crop of the drives mean the end of the line for the XServe RAID in terms of capacity.
While I have heard of people who've replaced the bundled drives with larger ones, with some success,
the blank drive bays have simple blanking plates - i.e. do not have the electronics required to actually
    support a drive.
Apple do not sell empty drive modules (with the electronics, but no drive), which makes it difficult
to expand the array other than by getting drive modules from Apple.
Correct. However, if you upgrade from a system with 14 250GB drives, you have all the mounting hardware you need, you just have to swap the drives in the carriers.
If you just bought new drive modules for Apple for the current blanks, and opted to manually
upgrade the existing drives on your own you'd end up with mixed drives (vendor, models and
firmware) which, at best, will result in degraded performance.
This has not been an issue in the past. After all, when you have a drive failure, you end up often with different drive models and firmware versions, too. E.g. Hitachi discontinued the 250GB drive model that was originally in the XServe RAID, and replaced it with a different 250GB drive in their line up.
You had no choice but to mix models if a single drive failure required swapping drives. (To make matters worse, the new drive, while faster, was a tiny bit smaller, which really caused head aches!)
Even though the drives sourced from Apple are more expensive than you can find similarly-sized
drives elsewhere, you get server-grade drives, burned in, with known/standard firmware, and
vendor support by taking the Apple route.
Sorry, that's FUD without basis. No drive manufacturer will run a special assembly line for "Apple grade" drives. Worse, you buy a drive module from Apple, and you have at best a 1 year warranty. You buy the drives from Hitachi or Seagate directly, you have a three or five year warranty.
If you try to use the manufacturer's warranty on Apple sourced drives, the manufacturers will not honor it, because the drives are OEM drives sold at a big discount to Apple, which means they don't give any warrantee beyond what Apple gives.
In terms of what you get for the money, both in absolute price, and in terms of warranty, is much better if you get bare drives straight from the manufacturer than going with Apple's drives.
Without knowing your business I can't tell you what to do, but for me I can't bear the thought of
telling my clients that I lost their data because I opted to save $100 on a few hard drives.
If you're selling to clients, of course, Apple drives are better: there's more profit in those, because they are not a commodity like bare bones drives, but a brand-name special order item.
(that's not to say that third-party drives are necessarily less reliable than those sourced from
Apple, more that being able to say you had a problem even though you were using vendor
supported and provided parts goes a long way ).
Apple's support in regards to drives that fail after a year is non-existent, except if you get the $999 AppleCare contract, but that means you can buy quite a few replacement drives to cover that, and it's still only 3 years coverage, vs. 5 years for the drives direct from the manufacturer...
Obviously Apple needs to make a profit, and inventory, logistics, etc. for parts are expensive, so you pay in essence for the convenience of getting a module you can just shove into the unit and be done. No need to mess with screwdrivers, etc.

  • Installing iDVD with external drive

Has anyone had success installing iLife '05 while using only an external DVD burner. Can't get iDVD to recognize the drive and install.

Not sure about your question, but let me relate my experience. I have an iMac G5 with combo drive. Use a Lite-On external DVD burner. the iMac recognizes this USB drive with no problems. iMovie and iDVD both work with this external drive.
If you are trying to install the iLife program, my question is why are you using an external drive? But in my experience I have installed software from the external DVD drive.

  • Lumia 930 & Here Drive+ Freezing Issues

Just recently used my Lumia 930 on my commute to work and the app seized up and stopped responding about 4 times in a 30 minute journey. It possibly might have something to do with GPS and cellular coverage in the area I was but my 920 just looked for the GPS again. Has anyone experienced this yet?

I also have Great issues with here drive freezing up constantly on my 930. This is a big problem, as I use my Phone every day for navigation, and have done so with all my Nokia devices,n95, n97, n8, lumia 800, lumia 900, lumia 920, and now this 930.
Now I have had to buy a Garmin as well, cause this freezing up all the time, is not usable at all.
I have noticed some problems with my 930, that it have small location problems. When i drive on 1 of two parallel roads with a gap of up to 50-70 meters, the Phone often mistake witch road im on. When it finds out, it lags a Lot on catching up on location, telling me im driving up to 200 km/h. In this sequence it often freezes up. Yesterday when I drove between two costumers, I tried to use here drive again, and it froze up 5 times on only 12 km, and then I gave up.
When it freezes, "here drive" have to Be restarted.
The Phone gets hot as hell, even more than my previous 920.
Actually I even belive at some points, this new 930 is a bit more sluggish than my old 920. Have you guys been a Little to optimistic with battery saver??

  • IMac aluminum + iTunes = System Freeze

i have an iMac aluminum and iTunes freezes my system when ever I try to access the apple store. iTunes works fine on my MacBook. When i try to access the store it just freezes. I have looked at the net connection, unplugging USB devices. Nothing. it still just locks up. any ideas?

    Hi ndstrkt
Have you looked in the itunes prefs, it could be possible that the itunes store could be disabled. Do you have the latest itunes installed on your computer? Version 8.0.1. You could try Repairing your system permissions, Go to Applications/Utilities/diskutilitly, click on your hard drive, with the first aid tab and click repair permissions. If this fails, you can try a new user on your computer and see if the fault still occurs.
    Good Luck

  • Does YOUR aluminum iMac work with Logic 8?

Hi, I have been facing Core Audio overloads with less than 5 tracks in Logic Pro 8 and have tried numerous suggestions. I have written ~6 songs even with the crashes and I want to something to give me a performance boost to see if Logic is worth it on an Imac or just a buggy trashpot. I recently of people with interfaces getting the same issue however.
I have a 2.4 ghz 24" aluminum imac with 4gigs RAM and am going to try adding these both: an Apogee Duet and an external dedicated FW800 drive in the next month.
For the dedicated audio FW800 drive I was considering a Lacie Quadra. Please come forward if you have an Aluminum Intel mac especially, due to all the firewire chipset discussion etc.
Can anyone who is very happy with their aluminum imac setup in Logic 8 please chime in? All responses are appreciated; So often we hear about problems on discussion boards, please share your smashing success story!
    Thanks,
    smooves

I have a 2.4 20" aluminum iMac running 50+ tracks (no freezing) with a few hundred plugins, with only 1 GB of RAM. I use a few external GLYPH Firewire drives. This system was actually a replacement from Apple for an iMac G5 that had the motherboard die 3 times in a 2 month time span. I'm very happy with it, its allowed me to get more work done. I don't understand why you're having so many overloads w/ only 5 tracks. I'd say up your buffer, but even for mixing I'm running at 256 on my buffer with 50 tracks or more and I'm fine. I've also never had Logic crash on me during recording or mixing. Only when using the score window. But since the update that hasn't happened.

  • Has anyone experience iMac memory issues with One Drive (previously Sky Drive) - uses 5GB of my 8GB memory!

I recently started experiencing memory issues with my iMac due to One Drive using up to 5GB of my iMac memory (total of 8GB). Every time I start up my iMac Activity Monitor shows One Drive uses around 4-5Gb of the internal memory for no reason. Previously Onde Drive seemed to work fine, it's only since about 2 weeks I notice this. It's really annoying as the iMac freezes up regulalrly and I need One Drive to synchronise my files across different devices.
Has anyone experienced this too and are there any known fixes?

Yes this is happening to me too, since the last upgrade. Eventually MacOS starts insisting I "Force Quit" all my applications as I have run out of application memory.
OneDrive doesn't appear in that list because it's not an application... but Activity Monotor clearly shows it's the culprit, taking up 5GB+ of RAM.
I've raised the issue on Microsoft's forums:

I am planning to buy an iMac 21.5 inch with Fusion drive and 16 GB RAM while i visit USA for a conference. My country of origin is India and the option of configuring to my need is not avaialble here in India. My concern is once i am back to India, will my iMac be covered by the Apple's Protection Plan if something goes wrong here in India?
I recently came across some posts regarding International warranty related issues for iPhone and iPad....hence this crossed my mind...
Waiting for response from the support group members...

    Thanks Ralph
This essentially means that if my iMac develops some problem (both software and hardware) in my country (India), it will be completeley attended (even the whole system requires replacement) by the AASP in India...is that what you say?

If you have a considerable photograph and/or movie collection you may want to consider off loading those to the EHD too. Here are Apple's article showing how handle iTunes & iPhoto libraries.
