IMac 24" Causing Interference?

Currently have a 24" iMac 2.33ghz Core 2 Duo\2gb\750gb\10.4.8.
As well as suffering poor wireless performance (slow transfer, unsteady connection), it appears to be interfering with other equipment in the house.
Whenever my external hard drive is plugged in, all radios in the house become unlistenable and my ADSL connection drops out. I have eliminated all other possibilities and it is down to the iMac-External HDD combination.
With the hard drive plugged into my iBook, no interference or drop outs occur.
I'm thinking perhaps something is amiss inside and the wireless antenna is broadcasting interference from the USB port/HDD? Its a strange phenomenon.
Anybody else experienced anything like this?
Cheers,
james.

Folks who have downloaded and installed the 802.11n Enabler for the Core 2 Duos have reported dramatically increased wireless range and usability.

I realize this may not help with the external HDD interference, but it should make your wireless experience better. A question for troubleshooting this issue. Have you turned off the AirPort card in you Mac and still experienced thi radio interference?

  • TV causes interference with powerline adapter

I just had infinity installed and I have a problem with my powerline adapters, which is next to the TV (it is for the sky+ box for sky go). The powerline adapters are TP-Link tl-pa211 and the TV is a Panasonic th-37px70b.
When the TV is on, the maximum I can get through the ethernet powerline is 14mb/s, but if the TV is off or on standby I can get close 40mb/s (i.e. the maximum on the broadband line). The TV is on a wall bracket so it is difficult to move.
    I have tried:
TV in room 1 connected to socket in room 1 and powerline in room 1 - 14mb/s when tv is on, 40mb/s when tv is off/standby.
TV in room 1 connected to socket in room 1 and powerline in room 2 - 40mb/s constantly.
TV in room 1 connected to socket in room 2 and powerline in room 2 - 40mb/s constantly.
TV in room 1 connected to socket in room 2 and powerline in room 1 - 14mb/s when tv is on, 40mb/s when tv is off/standby.
It seems it is the actual TV that is directly causing the interference with the powerline adapater, not the TV causing interference in the electricity line. I'm not sure how it can interfere directly.
Has anyone had anything like this before or is the TV just faulty?

Thanks for you reply. I have tried the TV connected directly to the socket and the powerline connected to a seperate twin socket about 1 meter away and I still get the problem when the TV is on. Also, I have connected the TV to a power socket on the other side of the house with a extension cord while not actually moving the TV and the powerline adapter connected to a socket near the TV and this still gives the same problem when the TV is on. And then, with the TV still on the extension cord to the otherside of the house, I connected the powerline to the same twin socket as the extension cord and this produced no problems.
So, it must be the physical proximity of the TV with the powerline adapter that is causing the problem. So could the TV be emmitting some frequency that is interfering with the powerline adapter?
I actually use a wireless powerline adapter (TP-Link TL-WPA281) in the socket, but for testing this problem I use the non-wireless version (TP-Link TK-PA211). And according to this thread, the BT Hub 3B isn't compatible with wireless extenders. Why is upgrading to infinity so annoying?

  • Does a sports camera positioned beside the top right corner of iPhone4 cause interference to GPS?

I rarely experience inaccurate tracking on Sports Tracker app though I did experience it the other day.
Since buying my HRM2 (for iPhone 4) I no longer run the myriad other GPS tracking apps on my iPhone. However, while out on a ride I discovered ST was not tracking well, so decided to simultaneously run a couple of apps. Another also experienced tracking problems.
I decided to remove the iPhone from the ST bike mount and put it in my back pack. The tracking issue resolved itself.
I was operating a sports camera on my bike at the time. It was located right beside the top right corner of the iPhone. On another bike, the sports camera is positioned differently (forward and lower of the top left corner) and I have experienced no problems with tracking. Could it have been causing interference on this ride due to its position?

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • IMac hanging caused by Safari (I think)

Have been having problems with my iMac hanging which I think is caused by Safari.
Safari (5.1.7 )will be working OK and then hang with the spinning wheel. Am then unable to quit and finder hangs in turn and I end up doing a restart with the power button.
Have 1 external hard drive attached which is partitioned for Time Machine backup and iTunes library.
In attemt to address problem I have previously erased my iMac and reinstalled all software (from new rather than from Time Machine backup) and then reinstalled user files (but not application library files in case any of these were corrupted.
Problem is common to all users.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only Guest login created by Find My Mac.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Some bizarre effects like a surround on two sides (top and right) of main Firefox window with elements captured from the top and side of main screen which on occasions flash at high speed and also a mouse focal point offset
I've tried Firefox safe mode and extensions plugins disabled and it definitely seems to be caused by switching hardware acceleration on as problems disappear when switched off.
Never had this problem before in several years use of Firefox until 16.02

Thanks for the link. Has something changed in FF v16.02 hardware acceleration that you are aware of that might have caused this?

  • My Wacky iMac - EVERYTHING causes a reboot!

Well, maybe not quite everything; I can get online. BUT:
Adjusting the volume with the keyboard
Opening the combo drive with the keyboard
    Trying to run Cro-Mag Rally
and a host of other things all cause the machine to reboot. We have 10.2.8 on the thing; I've tried to reinstall it, but, of course, every time I open the optical drive, blammo, instant reboot. Once the I've re-logged in, though, the drive doesn't seem to read the CD.
Ideas? I have an external optical drive that I might be able to read a CD with - can I reinstall the OS with an external drive?
    Thanks -
    did

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Before we make some suggestions could you please confirm whether the iMac actually powers off instantly and then restarts, or
whether the screen wipes down grey and then tells you that you must restart (Kernel Panic).
Was the iMac connected to the Mains when you had that power outage?
    Thanks.

  • IMac, update causing black screen and randomly powers off...?

I've seen many comment on this with few solutions.  It had never occurred until yesterday afternoon after the latest security update for Mavericks, 2014-005 v.1, was loaded and the system was rebooted.  After that moment the mac has been unusable.  It will start and after user log on, will black screen, sometimes still running and other times instantly powered off.  I have followed resetting the PRAM, and SMC procedures with no change and have booted into safe mode in order to examine the system and it is just as unstable there.  The times I have gotten it booted and running, attempting to access an earlier Time Machine backup, but before I can start reload it goes black.  The same goes while trying to check the sleep mode and security settings.  Unless this is an amazing coincidence, I believe the latest update has caused this problem and has for others as I have seen on many conversations.  Can this be uninstalled or does the drive need to get wiped and then reload from the Time Machine?
    Thanks.
    iMac,  A1311  21.5"  Mavericks 10.9.5  Update 2014-005 v.1

Well, initial call into Apple Care and one answer.  "We have no idea what it is, we can get you an appointment at a Genius Bar in 4 days!"  4 days?!  Seriously?  At least they were kind enough to only put me on hold for 30 minutes, AND then transferred me to a "Sr. Care Specialist" who basically blew smoke up my arse only to tell me the same thing... why transfer me at all?

  • MacBook Pro causing interference with EyeTV while charging

    Hi,
I bought an EyeTV DTT a while back and it just will not display anything while my MBP is on AC power, the signal quality drops from around 80% to zero. I also noticed by accident, that if there is current running through the magsafe (I accidentally let it touch something metal), the same interference is caused even if it is not connected to the MacBook Pro. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks but I've tried both USB ports and tried moving the device away with a USB hub and a USB extension, both didn't work.

  • Too Many Networks Causing Interference

    Hi all,
I'm running a PB G4 and Toshiba Tecra laptop on a wireless AEBS + AE network using WDS in a first floor apartment. My signal strength throughout the house is usually full bars with the AEBS running at around 45-65 and the AE at 35-45 signal strength depending on what room I'm in.
Now, sometimes my network just crashes and I receive error messages on the PB and PC telling me that there was an error loggin on to my network or that the connection is incomplete, respectively. My only recourse is to unplug the base station (and AE) and replug it. Usually, this corrects the situation.
I think this is happening because I detect no less than 5 other networks in my area. There are four units in my building, and the building is part of a row of connected apartment buildings. Adding my AEBS and AE, this makes a total of 7 transmitters in this cramped area! I think this might be creating a wireless blitz.
FYI, before running my current configuration, I was using a Netgear wireless router with the AE as a client (to stream audio). I switched to the AEBS + AE in WDS config because I thought it would add greater stability and range--which it has. But it seems I might need to "power up" some more in order to fend off the interference from other networks. I realize that this might have bad consequences for those other networks, but something has to be done!
So, I've been considering boosting my signal by adding an antenna. Is this a solution? I'm also thinking about tweaking the settings for both stations through Admin Utility. Maybe enabling interference robustness on the AEBS, AE, and PB might help?
Please offer any advice on what you think the problem might be and what might be the best solution.
    Thanks,
    FC

I think this is happening because I detect no less
than 5 other networks in my area. There are four
units in my building, and the building is part of a
row of connected apartment buildings. Adding my AEBS
and AE, this makes a total of 7 transmitters in this
cramped area! I think this might be creating a
    wireless blitz.
So, I've been considering boosting my signal by
adding an antenna. Is this a solution?
I don't think so. You'll increase your signal
level, and your noise level all together. But
your signal to noise ratio will reach a limit.
Exactly like what happens when you turn your radio
too loud because of the noise of your neighbour's
    one.
    I'm also
thinking about tweaking the settings for both
stations through Admin Utility. Maybe enabling
interference robustness on the AEBS, AE, and PB might
    help?
    Yes.
But more generally, like every wireless problem of
interference, you should first analyse it. You
should use a tool like iStumbler to identify all
the channels used by your neighbours.
Once you have identified these channels, and
their level of signal, you have to choose a channel
as far as possible of the most powerful ones.
In an idealistic world, you should choose a channel
3 channels away of all the channels used by your
    neighbours. (e.g.: if channels 1, 2, 5 & 6 are used,
you may use channels from 10 to 14, depending on the
regulations were you're using a wireless network).
All interference analysis should first go through
    this neighbour's channels hunt.
If you play randomly with your channels, you're
wasting your time, you may be disrupting your
neighbour's networks. And you will have to continue
this silly danse for a long time all together.

  • IMac 5k causing havoc with my wifi

OK, so this is strange.  First of all I'm not a mac newbie.  I've been using mac devices since the 80s. That being said, I don't know WHY everything works, I just love that Apple products Just Work, until now...
Ever since purchasing the new iMac 5K and updating my other two laptops to Yosemite my network has not worked.  Several calls to apple support only resulted in this:   Fix the network temporarily by unplugging the modem and unplugging the router and booting them both back up.  My network runs for a an hour or two and then suddenly its down.  And my 3 year old is screaming because Despicable Me is "Broken"
Things are just weird since the updates:
    1) non apple products (and the new iMac 5k) still connect to wifi when my network is "down".  my iPhone, iPad Mini, Apple TV, macbook pro retina, macbook air all  refuse to connect to the network, requesting over and over again to input the correct password this time....  But my OnePlus One - android phone connects just fine.  I borrowed a friends chromebook to test out and it connected seamlessly.  And my xbox 360 seems to connect as well.
    2) we discovered by accident that if we are in close proximity of the new iMac 5k (i assume close enough for Hand off or Airdrop) suddenly we are able to connect to the network.  We are able to remain connected for some time even after we have moved away from the iMac but eventually we are kicked off (1-2 hours)
    3) Most problems disappear when the iMac is turned off completely.  The network does intermittently cut in and out for a minute or so at a time every few hours or so, usually right in the middle of Despicable Me
    4) Turning off wifi on the iMac 5k and using ethernet does not seem to work either.  several hours later the network went down.
for some background, my network consists of Cox Cable supplied Docsis 3.0 modem (combined with voice over IP telephone) connected to Apple Airport Extreme (new version).  I have the older version Airport Extreme connected via Ethernet being used to extend the network.
I understand there is a beta update pending (10.10.2) that is supposed to address wifi issues but I wanted some input for my situation.
Anybody out there experience this or similar issues?

Please read the warranty paperwork that came w/your computer.
You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked.
You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support on top of your standard 1 year warranty unless you also purchased AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years of coverage plus FREE phone support.
Strongly suggest that you take FULL advantage of the above before it runs out.  Let Apple deal w/the problems & your concerns. It's what you paid them to do.

  • April 2008 iMac 24" causes my house lights to flicker

I have an April 2008 version 24" iMac with 2.8 GHz processor. When the computer goes into what I call "display sleep" mode, any lights on the same circuit as the computer start flickering. By "display sleep," I mean that the computer is running but the display has shut off. If the computer goes into full sleep mode, no flicker. If the computer is on and running, my lights don't flicker either. This problem occurs with both incandescent and fluorescent bulbs.
I had a program called "Shades" running to dim the display below its lowest setting, but the problem occurs with or without that program.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is it a bad power supply, or something else? The temperature levels, including the measurement for the power supply, seem normal. Many thanks.

I don't know where you are so don't know about your house wiring
regulations but I would not expect anything plugged into a powerpoint
to have an effect on the lights. They should be on totally different
    circuits.

  • Phone 4 and Shure SE530 causing interference

    Hi,
I've been using my Shure SE530 headphones and an iPhone 3GS and iPod Nano for years now with now problems. I recently upgraded to an iPhone 4 and instantly noticed a little interference sound.
As I plug the headphones into an iPhone 4 I can hear a little cracking noise for a few seconds - after the plug is seated. When I'm on the train and we pass another train at speed I hear the cracking noise again.
I've tried my SE530's with other people's iPhone 4's and have the same problem. If I try any other head phones, no problems. If I try my SE530's with any other audio device, no problem.
To the best of my knowledge this is only a problem with an iPhone 4 and my SE530's. Unfortunately I don't know anyone else with SE530's so I can't test theirs.
Has anyone else noticed this ?

This didn't happen by itself. This means VoiceOver is enabled which must be manually enabled at Settings > General > Accessibility.
You can turn this off on the computer used for syncing the iPhone.
With the iPhone connected to iTunes, under the Summary tab for the iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, at the bottom select Configure Universal Access.
Select Neither for "Seeing" and select OK.

  • Since 2.0, iPhone causes interference in headphones

Since updating to firmware 2.0, speaker interference bleeds though my original iPhone ear buds. This never occurred prior to firmware 2.0, and if it did, it was not noticeable to this extent.

    I'm experiencing the same.
I did a Restore as a new iPhone or not from my iPhone's backup which had no effect.
Hopefully this will be addressed with an update that is likely in the works.

  • PC causing interference with Airport Express 802.11n

    Hi there,
My airport extreme base station is operating in WDS mode, with an Airport Express as a remote wds.
When i power on a Dell laptop in the house where the AEBS is, the wireless connectivity for any Macs or Pc's connected to the AEBS grinds to a halt. After a few seconds, the AEBS provides zero connectivity. When I turn the Dell's power off, the AEBS signal builds to where it was prior to the Dell being turned on, which is very strong.
The wireless antenna for the dell is not even powered on, and it is not connected to the AEBS via wire either.
Has anyone experienced this kind of interference with the AEBS? I would like to use this Dell on the AEBS network via wireless. Unfortunately, tossing the Dell out the window is not an option for me. Thanks!

Seems the Dell's docking station was interfering with the ABS. Strange.

  • Base station causing interference with cable modem

I have a late model apple airport extreme base station with time machine. The unit is placed next to the cable box (that provides phone service) that connects to the modem that connects to the base station. When the base station is turned on and working (we use wifi ) there is a nuisance noise in the phones when making and receiving a call for the first 20 to 30 seconds and then disappears. When the base station is disconnected there are no problems with the phones.
Is there such a thing as shielding for the cable box and/or modem? Or is there a simpler solution?
    Thanks in advance!
    Luc

    Hi thanks for your response.
I use a VOIP phone system provided by the cable company (no phone filters required). The VOIP connects to an analog phone management system called Talkswitch. So I have three VOIP lines connecting to the Talkswitch box and 7 lines leaving the Talkswitch box connecting to analogue phones (wired) throughout the office. So to recap:
Cable company line connects to a VOIP Box (ARIS TM604G).
A modem (Thompson DCM475) connects to the the VOIP Box and to the Apple Extreme Base station (with Time Machine).
Three phone lines connect the VOIP Box directly to the Talkswitch Box. The Talkswitch Box is NOT connected to the Apple Base Station.
The server (Mac Mini) is wired to the Apple Base Station.
When I make or receive a call there is a buzzing sound in the line. Sound disappears after 20 to 30 seconds.
When I turn the Base Station off (disconnect) the buzzing sound disappears.
When I leave the Base Station ON and I connect a phone directly to the VOIP Box, there is no buzzing.
I can only assume that the Base Station is interfering with something. Is it the Talkswitch box or the phone cables?
Should I move the Base Station further from the Talkswitch box? or Use shielded cables (which ones)? Or is there another solution? Or is it a voltage problem?
    Thanks!
    Luc
PS : I did not have this problem with the older Apple Base Station. Is the new one too powerful?
