IMac 24" disaster

Here's my disappointing story:
I bought one of the 24" iMacs the day it came out. About 10 days later I received it and one of the first things I did was install windows XP. I followed the bootcamp/xp installation procedure exactly but once through the XP installation, the machine simply NEVER BOOTED AGAIN.
Tech support couldn't help so I had to take it to the apple store and after 8 days of not getting any information out of the "geniuses" at the apple store, they tell me they can't resolve it and that they're going to order a replacement. I had a custom configuration so I explicitly asked them to verify all the options in my configuration so they would order me the right replacement machine. About a week later my replacement comes in and sure enough they sent me the WRONG CONFIGURATION. The apple store manager swears its apple not the apple store's fault. They had to order yet another one and after another week or so I finally get a correct replacement. I just set this one up but it has STUCK PIXELS in the middle of the screen! In the three hours I've been using (doing basic things) it it has also locked up twice where the screen goes grey and a message comes up in several languages telling you to hold the power button down for 5 seconds to reboot your computer.
24" iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Return to the Apple Store for warranty repair/replacement. There isn't anything that can really be done here. Apple needs to assist you with the issue. They will make it right. If you don't trust the Apple Store raise the issue with a phone call to AppleCare.

  • "Free Space" Partition disaster on new Mountain Lion iMac

    "Help"
I just received a new 27 inch iMac as a replacement for my old machine, which apparently disntegrated during warranty. In setting it up, I tried to create a small partition on the hard drive to run a Linux distro for testing purposes. It seems that with the non-system disc versions of the OS this has become more complex, and what I recall as an easy process turned into a disaster where 2 of the 3 TBs on the machine are locked out as "free space". I humbly retreat from any thoughts of working with partitions on this machine - I just want to clean it up and get it to a one-partition state for music and graphic design production. I have a backup. Here is a snapshot of this nightmare:
I also note that at the top level, where I am used to seeing "Hitachi" (or whomever makes the hard drive) it says Macintosh HD. That can't be right?
Here is a diskutil list report:

I want to get rid of disk1, I guess, and make disk0 correspond to the 3.0 TB physical volume, not a "Logical Volume Family".

Any thoughts? restarting to Command-R seems like it would not address the partition problem at all. I suppose I could put it in target mode and use my laptop to wipe it, but I'm not sure that would address the partitions either. I am completely comfortable with removing the built-in system recovery area if necessary, as I made a system mount on a USB stick.

Given you have a backup you may want to think about erasing the hard drive and reinstalling Snow Leopard then restore your backup.

First, get rid of the "antivirus update". This will definitely slow down your system and will probably **** it up. Also, you don't need it.
Delete all anti-virus software, and related files, from your system, if possible using the "uninstall" facility that hopefully came as part of your anti-virus package.
Then restart your computer and see if things have improved, which I'm sure they will.

  • 10.5.3 disaster on new 24" iMac

I have a new 24" 3.06 GHz iMac that I've been trying to update to 10.5.3.  What a disaster!  First no dock, then Safari won't launch, then Installer won't run.  And that's only what I've found so far.  The iMac was pretty much stock 10.5.2 with Adobe CS3 and MS Office 2004.
Here's what I've done so far:
    1) Ran daily/weekly cron jobs (sudo periodic daily; sudo periodic weekly)
    2) Repaired permissions - no problems
    3) Backed up iMac using both Time Machine and SuperDuper - no problems
    4) Booted from SuperDuper backup and verified iMac's hard drive with Disk utility.  No problems found.
    5) Ran 10.5.3 Combo updater - no errors reported
Then the fun started.  After the double reboot, I didn't have a Dock anymore.  I checked two user accounts; neither one had a Dock.  Changing the Dock pref settings had no effect.  I tried to repair disk permissions, but repair permissions immediately failed with an error I've never seen before.  Not good.
Then I booted into Safe Mode and reinstalled the 10.5.3 Combo.  After the restart, the Dock was back.  Hooray.  But then I noticed that Safari didn't launch.  It immediately crashed.  I tried more than one user account; none could launch Safari.
Back to Safe Mode.  Safari didn't launch in Safe Mode either (for any user).  Then I tried the Combo updater again.  No difference.  Then I re-downloaded the Combo updater (using Firefox).  But this time, the Combo update wouldn't run at all!  The Installer program crashed every time.
I tried resetting PRAM.  No help.
I've been using Macs since System 7 and this is the worst update problem I've ever seen.  After a couple hours of trying things, I reverted back to 10.5.2 using SuperDuper and all is back to normal.
    Has anyone had similar problems???

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    Umm...
Get a case number next time you call, and request to speak to customer relations each time they tell you something different.
Also you might consider that part of the reason they give you different suggestions is what you communicate to them the problem is. 10.5.3 certainly has a few bugs, but losing your mail and addressbook is your problem, since you didn't backup your data. Anyone who doesn't backup their data, isn't reading the instructions for the update, which specifically call for backing up your data. Edit: under -
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1141
which was an available link from the updater you chose, it says:
    Important: Read before installing
It is recommended that you back up your system prior to installing any updates.
    Here's my backup FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
The addressbook and mail normally are not lost unless there is data corruption somewhere, or user error happens. If you want to isolate those causes backup, or recover your data, and say you have in a new thread here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1219&start=0
And ask how to resolve such corruption issues.

  • Imac + Playstation 3 = disaster for airport

I bought my current 24", 2.8 ghz Imac one month ago and have never experienced problems with my wireless service. Last week I bought a playstation 3 and connected it wirelessly to the same router. Now, whenever I try and access the internet on my Imac I can't seem to get a connection. When running network diagnostic it picks up my router but can't connect, I've attached the ethernet cable and it works fine. When attempting to connect I am told 'connection timed out' and then 'connection failed'. Sometimes it briefly picks it up again and seems to be running fine. I've turned off the playstation and disconnected it from the router completely but this has no affect. Anyone got any ideas?

Don't know what kind & maker of router. I would suspect that if you can have a Utility if an Apple router or the web page setup if Linksys router to at least re-check your network setup. Sounds like the router you have wants to JOIN the Sony new network instead of the other way around.

  • It seems that my Office 2008 is incompatible with the Yosemite OS that my friend just installed on my iMac. My Word no longer works. Also, I can't access messages on Entourage. What version of Office should I buy?

My friend installed OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 on my iMac. Since then, I can barely use my Miocrsoft Word 2008.  The spinning pinwheel, things freezing up, template and formatting trouble, and I can't get any Entourage messages more than a year old, which is a disaster.  I read that Yosemite won't support Word 2008. What Microsoft Update should I buy, and will that fix my problems?  I am desperate. Thank you in advance for your help.  Here is the result I got from EtreCheck. I hope this helps you help me.  BTW, your drop-down menu under Operating System doesn't work

Remove Office 2008 for Mac using Microsoft deinstall procedure. Reinstall Office 2008 for Mac.  If there are updates, apply them. Using Disk Utility, verify/repair permissions on your boot drive.
Does Office for Mac 2008 now work correctly? If not, you may want to repeat the above first sentence, and then update to Office for Mac 2011, and apply the latest (14.4.8) update which has Yosemite fixes.

  • Any others with 27" iMac 10.9.4 memory issues... my experience.

Hi, I just thought I would provide my experience here to both see if others have seen and dealt with the issue - and to alert others that this may be something worth considering in upgrading from Mac OSX 10.9.3
My 27" iMac 11,1 update to 10.9.4 was a disaster.  From the time I restarted my Mac it bogged down in performance and my applications were being paused (as seen in the Force Quit window).  The mermory task_kernel was grabbing over 5 GB of my 8 and not letting go.  At idle with no applications running all was fine with memory, but the moment I launched any of my standard browser (Firefox or Safari) or Windows apps (Outlook, PPt, Word, etc) or nearly anything else the Mac ground to a halt and applications were being Paused.  Quitting applications did not release memory from task_kernel.
I finally re-installed Maverics from scratch and nothing changed.  I tried Disk permissions and cleaning out as much as I dared and re-updating things like Flash but nothing made a difference.
For 3 days I searched all over the net for answers and could only find some reference to changing files that are energy-management related.  Apparently this was an issue for many portable users in the upgrade.  I tried their work around but this did not work for me either.
Being without a working Mac was getting to be too much so I finally decided to go backwards and used Time Machine (thank you, thank you, thank you Time Machine!) to go back to my last backup with 10.9.3.  I held my breath when it started and with Activity Monitor running all started fine... and stayed fine!  And has for days now.
By the way, I have an identical iMac with same software that was not upgraded that has stayed fine as well with every other upgrade but 10.9.4.
I do not know why this problem happened but clearly 10.9.4 is either not properly tuned for my Mac or it is creating a not so obvious conflict that is beyond my ability to manage.  I could spend days trying to figure this out - or - just leave well enough alone and hope that Apple fixes the issue or let's us know what is going on that we should fix.
For now, it's goodbye 10.9.4 and will be looking forward to but apprehensively at 10.9.5

Sorry, I had it ready didn't post.  Even have the log file as it was happening.  I took a video of Activity Monitor during it too.

  • ICloud disaster destroyed all my Pages work on the iPad!

I have an IPad 2 with Pages that I have used for months to write business articles and research papers for publication. I have been using iCloud to synch it through a single user account.
Last week, I was forced to upgrade my iMac to Lion because corrupted account permissions locked me out of all my home folders as well as my two different external drives and even my Time Capsule and Time Machine --- something supposedly impossible. But it all inexplicably happened. It took over a week for assorted sympathetic Apple care specialists and engineers to try to sort it out. The original problem was still never diagnosed or solved. Instead, my hard drive was erased, OSX 10.6 reinstalled, a date back up restored, and then Lion loaded as new.
As per Apple care instruction, iCloud in Lion was immediately activated on the iMac -- but no document files were ever shared.
Four days later, after synching my iPad to iCloud, when I next opened Pages I watched in horror as in a mere second more than 30 documents vanished en masse right before my eyes.
Somehow all these files never got backed up in my iTunes even though I had made several recent saves to the hard drive as well as an iCloud back up!
And as for the files or even the mobile documents library folder being save in my recent Time Machine back ups, they never were. The back ups contain no iOS Pages text nor any deleted folder files to restore.
Despite all the Time Machine and iTunes back ups, and despite all the free space on the iPad where I actually did all the work without an internet connection, as soon as I synched they were mysteriously deleted by iCloud.
Pages on iPad was left empty and blank. Replacing the mobile documents folder on my iMac from a back up did at least managed to provide Pages file some icons with names dates, but they are ghost documents, mere skeleton files that can’t be opened. All my actual text content is now apparently nowhere; lost in Apple’s iCloud ether!
This is an iPad which for months I used for Pages work without any internet connection, 3G or WiFi, and yet in an instant the iCloud on its own disintegrated everything it contained!  Apple essentially reached down into my device, into my personal property that I own, and without warning, notice, or permission and simply erased all my work; all my personal labor and effort that belonged to me. They essentially committed sabotage and theft.
I have nothing saved anywhere despite being told how the iCloud was a trustworthy safety net, that Time Machine provided worry free back up, and that saving through iTunes could restore iPad content. Garbage. I did everything right and still got screwed.
    Further…
In just the past two weeks alone I have suffered: my second iPhone -- a month old replacement for a previous defective iPhone itself only a month old -- experience a “software corruption” that caused it to continuously shut down if unplugged; my iMac and Time Capsule failing; and now this catastrophic iPad disaster.
If this is not resolved with my fiels returned to me I simply will never use iCloud and I will never trust Apple again.
I am disgusted and furious beyond words.
    JC
    Atlanta

    Hi JC,
My iPad is in a similar state, although I arrived in the bizarro state by a different path.  I am also waiting for the apple experts to get back with me.  I have an iPad 1 with ios 5.1.1 and Pages 1.7.1.
In the mean time, while I was waiting, I found a way to extract the TEXT from a large Pages document I did not want to lose;  it was the result of many years of notes.  This might save you some time instead of sifting through the raw index.db.
The index.db file is a sqlite3 file.  If you are on mac you can open it from a terminal with the command:
    sqlite3 index.db.
I suggest you move the file out of the iTunes directory before you start working with it, just in case something unexpected happens, you don't want to lose the only copy of the data you are trying to recover.
    1) Once the file is open via 'sqlite3 index.db' from a terminal command line, type ".tables" at the 'sqlite>" prompt and press enter.  It should show five tables:
    cullingState
    dataStates
    document
    objects
    relationships
    2) The file with your data is named dataStates, but it has many records in it.  I found my data by looking for the "largest" record.  Let me explain.  There are two fields in the dataStates table:
    identifier
    state
Your data is stored in the 'state' field and it's data type is 'blob'. (I know that sounds stupid, but stick with me.)
    3) I found the largest record by typing  this query at the 'sqlite>' prompt:
    select identifier, length(state) from dataStates order by length(state) asc;
My 'dataStates' table had 599 records, so many lines fly by, but the largest state field is at the bottom of the list with it's identifier.  Mine was:
    3|173212
That identified a dataStates record with identifier '3' and 173,212 bytes of data in the 'state' field. Most of the bytes where printable ascii.  It WAS the text of my original Pages document.
DISCLAIMER:  This method does not retrieve ANY formatting, pagination, tables bullets or numbering, images or other document rendering information.  It is just the TEXT.
    4)  Type this SQL command at the 'sqlite>' prompt to pull out the blob data:
    select hex(state) from dataStates where identifier=X;
In my case the identifier was 3 so MY command was:
    select hex(state) from dataStates where identifier=3;
    5) Now is when the funs begins.   The large block of gibberish is 'ascii encoded binary' brought to you courtesy of the hex function.
To store it in a file, use the the sqlite3 '.output' command and type the preceding sql select.  Like the following:
    .output binacii.txt
    select hex(state) from dataStates where identifier=3;
    .output stdout
This takes the large block of 'binary encoded ascii' and writes it to file named 'binascii.txt' rather than displaying it in the terminal window.  After the select statement ends, the output is switched back to the terminal window (stdout).    The 'binascii.txt' file is located in the same folder/directory that was the current directory when you launched the sqlite3 command.
    6) I moved my 'binascii.txt' file to a windows computer at this point and wrote a simple conversion routine to decode the 'ascii coded binary' into something usable with a work processor.  In "ascii coded binary", each 8-bit byte of data is encoded as two ascii characters, it enables sending binary data via the internet, etc, similar to uuencode, but NOT the same.
    7) Here is a small python program to convert the 'binascii.txt' file to the text from your Pages document on a Mac:
    import sys
    p = sys.stdin.read()
    s = []
    for location in range(0, len(p), 2):
       value = int(p[location:location+2], 16)
if value >=32 and value <=126 or value==10:
           s.append(chr(value))
    sys.stdout.write(''.join(s))
    8) (NOTE: The last line has two single quotes (') not a double quote (")). I am assuming at this point that you know how to create a text file using a terminal window.   Add the python script to a text file, make sure you honor the indentations!  I named my python file 'convert.py'.  To use the python script, type the following command:
    cat binascii.txt | python convert.py > your.txt
This method also assumes that the files 'binascii.txt', 'convert.py' and 'your.txt' are all in the same folder/directory.
    9) The resulting file, 'your.txt' can be opened by Word or Pages (you can name the file 'your.txt' to whatever you want).  In my case, I opened the file 'your.txt' with MS Word.  It had some rudimentary formatting in the form of paragraph breaks, single lines, some headings etc.  I did lose the data stored in tables, although I expect the text is still lurking somewhere in the index.db file.
There were some ascii characters that were not part of my original document, but they were pretty easy to find and remove.  In my case the errant ascii characters were outside my document's large text block.   Also numbered and bulleted blocks run together.  Again the formatting information is still buried within the index.db file.
The iOS Pages file format is more cryptic than the simple zip/XML format from the desktop OS X version of Pages.
Hope this helps a little, although you seem to be OK with the approach of sifting through the raw index.db file.  The Pages document  I wanted to recover was 63 pages long and manually sifting through all the crap in the index.db  drove me on a quest to find the real text within the index.db file, which i found.
Sorry for the length of this post,
    Cheers

  • Migration from PPC iMac 10.4.11 to Intel iMac OS 10.6.6 w/ Migration Assist

This migration has been far from straightforward and I wonder if someone can give me some tips to sort the remaining problems I am having out.
1 I can't delete old e-mails. The trash can on 10.6.6 is now compartmentalised into 4 trash cans, each one corresponding to one of my active e-mail accounts. In order to delete an e-mail, I have to use the Move to [Trash] command for each individual message in any of the mailboxes I have set up, other than the default Inbox. The delete command does not work!
2 Some calendars I tried to bring across from iCal in 10.4.11 have disappeared. Where are they or where might they have gone?
3 I cannot open my iPhoto library from the old PPC iMac 10.4.11. An error message tells me that I cannot use this version (9.1.1) to open my photos. This is a disaster.
    Thanks in advance.

OMG. This is more complicated than I expected.
I have iPhoto 9.1.1. Is there any reason I should get iPhoto '11? I can't see any reason, at the moment, to buy iLife 11.
You're not reading what I posted. You already have iPhoto '11. version 9.1.1 is iPhoto '11. You shouldn't buy iLife '11 as it came preinstalled on your Mac.
Sorry. I had misunderstood, and not realised that iPhoto '11 IS iPhoto 9.1.1 My apologies.
In Library/Events, I have a series of small windows, each of which bears the title of, corresponds to and holds the photographs of each old Album. These windows are NOT in alphabetical order. It would be helpful if I could get them into this order!
An Event is like a Roll in the old iPhoto. It is a grouping of all the photos imported at the same time. You can name events and split them up, also.
OK. Each Event (in new iPhoto) is thus effectively a grouping of all the photos imported at the same time AND appears to be named identically to each Album on the old iPhoto.
In Library/Photos, there seem to be two views:
1 Each old Album title with a downward pointing arrow next to it displays all the pictures in that album.
That sounds like you are talking about Events. If you have Events selected in the Library, then you are looking at Events, not Albums. You can still create Albums and move photos into the Albums. Do you have your old Albums in the Album list?
See above ie each (new) Event seems to correspond to an (old) Album. I do not have my old Albums in the new Album list (or indeed any Albums at all).
It also sometimes displays the WRONG information for the dates on which the photographs within that album were taken. For example, there are 78 photographs in one album that were taken over the course of a week (by me and other friends) and yet the date next to the album title implies the photographs were taken over the course of 4 years. Why?
If what you are looking at are Events, and not your original Albums, then the Events have extra photos in them since they are based on time of import and not your Albums.
Yes, I take your point about the dates.
Or, the dates on some of the photos may be wrong. If the image file does not contain the exif data for the date, it will try to use something else. My guess would be that some of the photos don't have the correct data in the exif data. If you find the ones that are wrong, you can Adjust the Date and Time from the Photos menu. You can also make Batch Changes to multiple photos. Check the help for that.
Some of the dates on the photos may indeed be wrong. I'll see what I can do about this later.
Library/Faces seems pretty straightforward. With 1,511 unnamed faces, it is going to be quite a job to name them all, but at least it is an optional task.
Library/Places has two pictures in it, although I have absolutely why those 2 specific pictures are there, and not others.
Those are the only two photos that had a geo-location tied to the photo (again, in the exif data). Some newer cameras have GPS location data. If your smartphone has location information (likely) it will embed location info in the photos it takes.
Neither my camera nor smartphone provides GPS location data BUT these photographs were taken by someone else using his smartphone which apparently does. Thanks for solving this mystery.
Recent/Last import shows the same views as Library/Photos above.
Yes, that would be the most recent import for this Library.
Recent/Flagged has no photos in it.
You didn't flag any photos, so none are in there.
Trash has no photos in it.
    I hope that's a good thing.
Yes, that's fine. I haven't deleted any of the imported photos yet.
So I think I just need help with how to get the Albums, whether in Library/Events or Library Photos, or in Recent/Last import into
View menu, Sort command. Note that each selection in the Library has its own sort options.
In Library/Events, I used View/Sort Events 'By Title' and this has alphabetised the Events perfectly. Brilliant. Thanks again.
However, each (new) Event ie group of photos imported at any one time, is still named with, and corresponds to the title of an (old) Album.
I have created a single (new) Album while having a single (new) Event open. This magically transferred all the photographs from that Event to the Album. Problem solved easily.
The latter solution b) would be particularly useful as I find pictures most easily in their correctly named and alphabetised albums and not by date. I have not yet discovered any way to drag the imported old albums into alphabetical order, perhaps because they appear to have been imported as a single, for some intents and purposes but not others, block.
    View>Sort Events>Manually.
PS I have started to read around this subject on the forums...there seems to be a lot of frustration on the general issue of migration of iPhoto from 10.4.11 to 10.6.6...but at least I was lucky enough to have a complete back up of ALL my pictures from the old PPC iMac.
A lot has changed since 10.4 and the version of iPhoto you used. You missed all the incremental changes as they occurred, so you are now trying to make sense of a lot of changes.
    Right.
I think I like the Event structure better than using Albums; however, you can still use Albums like you did before, you'll just need to recreate them if you want to use that method. I'm sure there are reasons for using Albums, but I haven't played with it enough to know when/why.
I see now that Events are indeed almost alternatives to Albums and I will also just have to get used to using one or the other or both. But in any case, this seems solved now, thanks again to your tips.
Printing is a bit different. You might want to play with that a little before you need to print something in a hurry.
    I'll get there.
I am still having some problems with iCal and Mail but will post them again in separate forums so as to be able to mark this iPhoto topic as solved.

  • IMac 10.5.8 is stuck on Apple logo loading screen , how can I back up my files with an external hard drive ?

so my iMac (10.5.8 its pretty old ) got stuck on the apple logo loading screen (as I call it lol) and it will not go beyond that .I've already made and appointment for the genius bar but now would I back up my files with an external hard drive ? No unfortunately I don't have any other laptop or computer just the external hard drive. how would I back it up? Does it have something to do with "target disc mode"?

    Hi,
Thank you for great advice re SuperDuper.
You wasnt to know we didnt live in  USA.  We will try to get the full retail version of Leopard off the net.  We will also phone round the apple resellers.
In the meantime, we are happy running Tiger with the knowledge that SuperDuper has cloned our hard drive in case of a disaster.
SuperDuper recommended backing up the hard drive with a new user account if we were using filevault on the master account.  We backed up our hard drive without creating a new user with filevault as we could not read the pdf `Instuctions as preview was not responding.
Is this copy safe to use as a bootable drive or should we copy our entire HD again using a new user account without filevault?

  • How do I run iMovie 11 from an external hard drive to save space on my iMac?

I've recently bought a 1TB external hard drive (My passport) which I want to use exclusively for photos and movies.
I've already successfully transferred all my iPhoto library to the external hard drive which is now the default for iPhoto.
Can I do the same for iMovie 11.......and if so, how??
I want to regain space on my iMac's internal hard drive, as it's nearly full with mainly photos, but some movies.
(I already have a seperate external hard drive linked to Time Machine to back up everything on my iMac)
    Many thanks !

    Hi
It's a very good idea to use an external hard disk to take load off the Main Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk.
BUT there are some VERY Important things to know.
    A. NEVER move via DeskTop/Finder or alter any folders named
    • iMovie Events - or -
    • iMovie Projects
As this will result in disaster (hard to impossibly to mend)
All moving's of Events and Projects must be done Within the iMovie Application to be done in a Safe Way
    B. The External/Second Hard Disk
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted for VIDEO - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most things BUT NOT FOR VIDEO - whatever program is used iMovie or FinalCut or iDVD doesn't matter - VERY IMPORTANT ! ! !
    • Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me especially when filling up. (Thunderbolt might be even better - have non to test)
    BUT when reg. iPhoto Library.
    • Yes it can be moved
    • Yes iPhoto can be directed to find it
    • BUT - iMovie can not find those out-localized iPhoto libraries (AS FAR AS I Learned up to now 12-April-03 - anyone with more insight may kindly set me into a possibly way to do this)
So I've outsource my iMovie Event's (most important as they take space) and Projects (not so important as they are very small - no movies in them only text document conducting how the Events are to be viewed) - BUT iPhoto stays - will not touch it.
    Yours Bengt W

  • IMac with 3TB Fusion drive will not partition under Boot Camp

    I have a 27" iMac with a 3TB Fusion drive and I am using 10.8.4.
I am trying to install Windows 8 Pro with Boot Camp.  Everything starts well enough, but once I get to "Create a Partition for Windows" and setting a 505 GB Windows partition, it begins the process, but then seems to stop progressing with the status indicator pretty much stopped at a point directly under the "d" in the "Status: Partitioning disk.."
I've let it run for the past 1.5 hours and it hasn't budged.
This is not my first attempt at doing this on this machine.  I tried manually partitioning with Disk Utility which pretty much ended up in a disaster that I was able to repair with some difficulty.  That was covered in this thread.
I realize that 3TB drives were not supported under 10.8.3, but I thought that was fixed.  Am I wrong?

This is a bit of a guess and you might have do a bit of further reading to understand what I am trying to say but basically:
When you buy a Mac - its Hard Disks come partitioned using the GPT partitioning scheme that is used for the UEFI boot process (All new Windows 8 badged computers have UEFI now as well - Macs have been using it for years). This is opposed to the old MBR partitioning scheme that was used with the BIOS boot process.
There are quite a few limitations of the MBR partitioning scheme including:
    1. A limit of 4 partitions per volume
    2. A limit of 2 TB per partition
    3. Poor support for AHCI
When you run Boot Camp - it turns your partitioning into a hybrid of the two, so you get stuck with all the limitations of MBR - with the second bullet point above I suspect of giving you issues.
You have a couple of possible solutions:
    1. Test with having all partitions less than 2 TB
    or
    2. (Technical) Try and install Windows 8 in EFI mode - its a bit tricky at the moment and a little bit of work - but I have it working on my MacBook Pro (although I do have nVidia graphics driver issues that you may or may not encounter as well). See my wiki at multiboot.info for links if you want to attempt this

  • Help for with slow, glitchy (late 2012) iMac

This is an ANSWER and not a request for help.  I didn't know where to post this and apologize for stepping where I shouldn't.
I have a Late 2012 iMac that has been crashing, running slow, and now worse;  all my documents and everything in Finder have disappeared.  I discovered a fix that may help others with similar issues.  I use my iMac for use with Logic Pro X and Mainstage where freezeups are a disaster.  I thought about this awhile and realized I had installed a new USB 3.0 external hard disk a few months ago when this issue began. I began to experience more and more crashes and extremely slow performance.  Beach-balls and slow performance were common.  But the last straw was when everything in Finder disappeared.  My Document and Application folders were empty.  If I clicked on "About This Mac" I saw nothing.    It took two tries to prove my theory, but here's what I did to make "the fix".  I unplugged the USB 3.0 drive and all USB and external devices.  I did a restore of OSX Mt Lion.  All was back to normal.  But after plugging in the USB 3.0 drive, all the afore mentioned problems came back.  I did one more restore, this time NOT connecting the USB 3.0 external hard disk.  Now I have gone some time and my iMac's speed is back to "incredible", no beach balls or any sign of slow performance in recording or running any other app.  Apparently, the 2012 iMac; although spec'ed to be USB 3.0 compatible, may not be all that compatible. Hope this helps someone!

Likely the external drive is bad or defective cable.

  • My 13 month old IMAC finally died. Is it worth repairing?

    Hi all,
"Could someone tell me how to forward this post to apple asia, what is there email address as i would like them to get a copy" thanks all.
Some may have seen my posts. I am working in Jakarta and 13 months ago i bought an Imac g 5 , serial w844...., rev a. I also own a g4 powerbook.
The imac was nothing but trouble since i got it. Fan noise made it useless as a day to day desktop. So i keep using my powerbook. Well my business stuggled last year so i did not use the Imac very much. Basically got the imac as a heavy design machine and for backups . Probably only used for a few months in total. When i did use it and needed it during two busy periods, it broke down. Screen failure, TWICE. It also went back for screen flickering and fan noise in the first month i got it. . Last week was the last straw. Needed it for backups and for heavy work, had people coming in to use it. It died and it cost me money as we could not work as planned. Well its been a disaster. Agravation and lost money and time. Spent more time last year setting it up than using it. Everytime it come back from service, they apologised and said they could not back it up for some reason. Then i had to set it all up again.
The little shop i bought it from here always took care of me. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks ago the original owner left the business to his partner. Now the new owner says he has to go back to apple for a new logic board and its not under warranty, even though its serial number is in the extented warranty list. Logic board at least 2 weeks, ( most likely a month). He also says i may have to pay cause its out of warranty by one month. Even though it was in the shop 4 months ago for repair. Records, what records, where is your receipt? I am asked.
Anyhow, sadly, i have spent 1,000's at that little shop, dotmac membership, network gear ,airport, wireless mice, and so forth. Now i do not think the imac platform is appropriate as a reliable work machine. If i am asked to pay for the repair, i will just take the machine back and use it as a joke for my friends. I will just buy a cheap desktop as the backup machine. Even if its repaired i dont think its reliability is good enough to keep using it. Lets see about the warranty first.
I encouraged a lot of people to switch to apple. Now i look very stupid. I paid US$1565 for the machine, with extra ram etc.. Not cheap.
Two years ago there was only 1 good apple store in Jakarta, now there are at least 100 with the explosion in ipod sales. Unfortunately, they have no decent staff or support and are only interested in immediate sales. I feel that the apple reputation will be taking a big hit soon.
I would really like to ask APPLE for my money back. People around town know me as the apple nut. I encouraged lots of people to switch to mac. Lets just say, the hardware issues may force me to switch back.
Sadly, i have really enjoyed these discussion groups, great way to get help. i am just a little sad and a lot angry now.
Thanks again all for listening to my rant.
    Joe

I know exactly what you are going thru Joe. I had a first generation iMac G5 and had it break down 5 times in the first 11 months of its life. I had mine replaced after some very long discussions with AppleCare. I must say, at first they just wanted to send me yet another replacement part. BUT< I begged, pleaded and begged some more. ( Always remaining calm and not getting mad.) And finally they conceeded. I got my new iMac G5 iSight, rev. C after 13 months of nothing but trouble with the Rev. A.
I had 2 motherboards fail, a video inverter, an optical drive failure, and finally a video card failure.
I would strongly suggest you ask for a replacment. The particular model you have is a horribly faulty machine. Many, many people have had issues with their machine. I would imagine thats why the Rev C machines have been COMPLETELY redone on the inside. Completely! Although there is no three strikes law, you just may be able to convince them that this computer has given you more trouble then you thought you would have had when you bought it. Let them know how dissapointed in Apple you are. I think if you are persistant and respectful you just might be able to get Apple to do the right thing and replace this computer.
It's a shame so many have had and WILL have so many problems with the early iMac G5s. Shouldnt have gone down like that.
