IMac 24" Display Crash

Hi, I have a problem on my iMac 24" yesterday I experienced this issue of crashing the display, I was working with Artlantis Studio 1.2, rendering and then it happened, fortunately I have my camera with me, and recorded what was going on. So please see this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W53fjz5Rbw
which is divided in 3 videos, just follow up and if anyone knows what is it, please me know how to fix it.
Best Regards,
David

I can understand your predicament. The 24" iMac is a wonderful machine, but the Mac Pro is a creative dream machine that many in the industry rely on day in and day out.
As far as the display quality between the two, they both carry the same standard Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT graphics card with 256MB of GDDR3 VRAM. So the quality of the graphics card should not matter much.
In display size, the iMac has the clear advantage with one extra inch, and to tell you the truth, I think the quality of ANY display apple puts in their computers is superb. I for one, have a 17" iMac Core Duo (Early 2006) as my desktop and I feel that the display is great.
Also look at the fact that the 2.33Ghz processor available in the iMac is really quite close to the 2.66Ghz in the Mac Pro, although you get twice the power in the tower machine.
Unless you do a lot of heavy graphic design processes everyday, I would save the office some money and go with the 24" iMac. It really is a great value for a graphic designer.

  • IMac (early 2008) crashing/freezing/beach ball appearing too often

Hi - I'm new to the support community but am in need of advice/help for my iMac that is crashing with blue and/or white screens or freezing with unresponsive mouse/keyboard and a spinning beach ball.
It's been doing this for about 6 months, and 4 months ago I sent it to an Authorised Apple repair centre. They upgraded the HDD to 1Tb as disk space was just about used up and beefed the emory up from 4Gb to 6Gb. However, within the week, it was doing it again - and the repair centre dont want to help anymore (seperate issue) - hence the plea for help as, no suprise, its frustrasting me beyond belief - I'm now almost at the point of giving up the mac way of life
The iMac is a 24" Early 2008 machine (2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo) running Mavericks at 10.9.1 (albeit the issues were there last summer before the upgrade). The machine wont run a hardware test with holding down the D or Alt D on boot up - it used to do this fine before the Mavericks upgrade
Appreciate anyone's steer/advice - my technical knowledge is quite low (hence going for the mac in the first place)
Ta in advance to any replies

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running a program at the instance of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There is no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear in the Terminal window. If you don't see that line within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

    How do I enable TDM?
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.
    How do I exit TDM?
To leave TDM, press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac that is in TDM. You can also exit TDM if you shutdown or sleep either computer or detach the cable.

  • Brand new imac 27" keeps crashing randomly in mavericks while idling, using firefox, transferring files, etc.  Reformatted and reinstalled everything from scratch after 15 plus crashes a day.  Crashes now only 4 times a day.  Help!

Brand new imac 27" keeps crashing.  I'm running 10.9.2 with all software up to date.  It will crash on file tranfers to/from/between external drives, web browsing, word processing, video editing, and even while idling.  It used to crash every 15 minutes when I first got it but I reformatted and reinstalled all software.  Now it it still crashing albeit less often.  This is extremely frustrating because I have no idea what I can do to prevent it from happening!
Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm thanks for the input.  Alright. I uninstalled Avast.  Was good for an hour or so.  I was doing some file browsing and crashed again.  Got this message.

  • External display crash

    Hi,
I have the Unibody MacBook from late 2008. My problem is that when I connect an external display and using extended desktop, the external display crashes randomly. Sometimes I can watch movies or photos for hours and sometimes it crashes after 3 minutes. However, the MacBook itself does not crash so when I unplug and insert the mini-displayport -> DVI adapter, the computer starts up the external display again.
Does anyone have a clu about this issue?
    Regards,

  • Using iMac as display.

Has anyone had any experience with this? I ultimately want to get a PS3 and use my iMac to display it. It runs HD video from eyetv and downloads fine.

    I use one of these
    http://www.daystartechnology.com/AppleMac_Products/XLR8_Macintosh_Products/Mac_USB2_Video_Transfer_OSXPS.html
but the input is composite (RCA connections) or S-Video. Not sure if that's what you are looking for.

  • IMac 24" display vs. 23" Cinema Display

I'm hoping to get a new Mac for graphic design at work. I'd love to get a tower unit and 23" display, but I may need to save the company money and go for the iMac with maximum RAM. At home, I have a 20" Cinema Display with my G5 and a 17" iMac (all just prior to Intel conversion). The iMac display doesn't look as good as the Cinema Display.
Can anyone tell me how the latest iMac 24" display compares with a 23" Cinema Display, as far as quality of what you see? Is the graphics card the determining factor?

I also happens when I try to export movies with Motion 5.
Does anyone have the same problem with my new iMac?

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it, then drag or copy it — do not type — into the Terminal window:
    find . $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Press return. The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "35." Please post it in a reply.

  • MacMini to iMac 27" Display

Can I connect an older Mac Mini (approx 2007) to a new iMac 27" display - I am about to purchase one but in doing so will be removing the PC/LCD monitor...
So what options do I have or is this a non-starter?

Which is why I suggested that I need the newer product:
Note for iMac 27" users only: Even our box is capable of passing high resolutions up to 1920x1200, users of iMac 27" will only be able to get picture with resolutions up to 1280x720 (720P). The reason for it is that iMac 27" native resolutions are: 800x600, 1280x720 or 2560x1440 (since our box is limited to single link (1920x1200), and can't work with 2560x1440 it will take the next resolution down the list which is 720p. *We are working on AT-DP400 which will allow dual link resolutions (such as 2560x1440) to pass though*. For PS3 or Xbox users, you can use our converter without additional devices at only 720p resolution. Make sure to set 720p prior connecting it to the DP200.

  • Display Crash

I have been using my Quicksilver for a while, and it has worked fine. Then the other day the display crashed 5 seconds after I logged on. I tried changing any setting that I could think of that would relate to a display. What happens is the log in screen is fine, I log in and the desktop is fine for about 5 seconds. After that the display went odd. If you go to You Tube, you can see what I mean by watching my video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_av2ZOw9mw From what I can tell, it's a problem with the computer itself, not the monitor. (I tested it on 3 and it does the same thing.) If you know anything about this, please reply.
    Thanks.

Look in the "Seeing" pane of "Universal Access" system preference and make sure the "Enhance contrast" slider is all the way to the left.

My imac screen display is unfocussed, odd coloured and blurred (caused by rogue cate walking over keyboard).  I have no idea what settings have changed or what to check.  Any ideas?!

It could be a number of keyboard shortcuts, here's a few.
If the screen is zoomed,  hold CNTL and scroll down with mouse or trackpad.
If screen looks like a negative,  hold down CNTL OPT CMD and click 8.
Let us know how what other symptoms are shown.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I'll presume that you can adjust the brightness after bootup. If that display preference is kept in PRAM, it's possible that the PRAM battery is wearing out.
Here's what Apple says about what's stored in PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1242
To test that possibility, turn off "Set date and time automatically" in the Date & Time panel of System Preferences (if it's set), shut down and unplug your Mac, then let it sit for a few minutes. When you reboot it, check the system date and time. If the PRAM battery is failing, those may be set incorrectly.
iFixit describes replacing the PRAM battery of an iMac G5 as of "moderate" difficulty. See these pages:

  • Use iMac as display from other source

    Hi,
I have iMac 27" with thunderbolt connectivity in it. Is it possible to connect an external computer (with or without a converter) to use the iMac's Display? If possible, kindly let me know how.
    Thanks & Regards

make sure to get the right converter thou. If you want to connect your ps3 (example) via hdmi, there is a difference between a "minidisplayport to hdmi" and a "hdmi to minidisplayport". If you want to get input via hdmi you will need the "hdmi to minidisplayport" converter.
edit: cmd+f2 on the one you want to use as a monitor.
    edit:
    http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/ :
And because Thunderbolt is based on DisplayPort technology, the video standard for high-resolution displays, any Mini DisplayPort display plugs right into the Thunderbolt port. To connect a DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, or VGA display, just use an existing adapter.
EDIT: after some googleling it seems that X423424X is right.
