IMac 24" Display VERY BRIGHT!

Okay, I know this is not the first time someone has complained about the monitors being too bright, but here I am. I am a new owner of the 24" iMac, and I love the size, but it's TOO BRIGHT! Is there anything I can do that can lower the brightness lower than what it generally goes? Even with the lowest settings, it's SO BRIGHT!
I have tried SuperCal but it didn't QUITE do the job. I need something to lower the brightness, not modify the colors to make it look that way, or something that will make it look that way as much as possible! I have to wear sunglasses when I'm in front of my Mac! Please help!
iMac 24"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB, GeForce 7600GT 256MB

Hey Glor, thanks for the suggestion! I've actually tried looking for those screen tints but I couldn't find a 24" in one ANYWHERE! I was even thinking about calling them and asking them to custom build one for my size!
GMONEY, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I tried finding something like EVERYWHERE but I just couldn't get it! It has saved the strain of my eyes at night, and wearing sunglasses.
One thing though, it doesn't look like it actually drops the brightness by the hardware, but more with the software - where it just changes the gamma or whatever it is over the entire screen. Still does the job! Thanks!

  • IMac 24" Display too bright

Even after dimming down the brightness of the iMacv 24 inch screen to lowest setting, I still find that its way too bright for my eyes. I have tried to use Shades for Mac OSX and it works fine, however for Windows Vista, I cant find any solution to dim down the brightness without changing my Color profile. Anyone out there can help me with this?

A recent Apple software update for the Alum iMacs may be addressing the brightness issue. In a previous post the following was said regarding the details of what's in the update...
After opening the installer package in "Pacifist" (an installer package viewer /extractor) utility), I >noted that revised ATI drivers (last revisions in iMac Software Update 1.0 a few weeks back) are the >main feature. The GLEngine translate item also updated together with a DisplayProductID-9c6a file.
The above may mean that the ATI HD2600 PRO video card may now run at full specification (a la >Vista)! The display product file may mean improvements to the 20" Al iMac's display..."
And in another post someone was also asking...
anyone notice their brightness lowered recently?

IMac 350 slot loader: Display VERY VERY DARK. I have a slot loader 350 imac. The display is so dark its unusable until night time when I came make out most of the desktop. I have OS X installed, 9.2.2 installed and upgraded the firmware. I also replaced the RAM and tried booting from a CD. Nothing helps. The iMac works but is very dark. The Monitor control panel is set at max contrast and brightness set to max now, too. No relief. Any ideas? It must be hardware at this point.

I'm wrong. It's the sign of a dying CRT. You can have a look at this possible repair.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I'll presume that you can adjust the brightness after bootup. If that display preference is kept in PRAM, it's possible that the PRAM battery is wearing out.
Here's what Apple says about what's stored in PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1242
To test that possibility, turn off "Set date and time automatically" in the Date & Time panel of System Preferences (if it's set), shut down and unplug your Mac, then let it sit for a few minutes. When you reboot it, check the system date and time. If the PRAM battery is failing, those may be set incorrectly.
iFixit describes replacing the PRAM battery of an iMac G5 as of "moderate" difficulty. See these pages:

  • Thinkpad x220 display problems very bright

I just bought my laptop in March 2012 and I've run into this problem 3 times since then.
All of a sudden, the display will become very bright, oversaturated, for every application that I have open.   The pixel sizes remain the same, and most of the type is legible, but because of the oversaturation, the font is a bit more difficult to read/discern.
I've restarted and that usually takes care of it, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same problem?  I worry given my laptop is new and I had terrible problems with my previous Lenovo ideapad (large vertical white stripes took over my display, obstructing view of whatever application was open). I swore to never by an Ideapad again.
    thanks!

    hi lenovolinda,
Thank you for your post welcome to the community,
Based from my understanding of your post it appears that it could be a configuration issue. You may want to check your Bios version to see if it has been updated the to lates, which is v1.29. Should it is lower than the bios version i have shown over here, i would recommend you update your Bios first to ensure that your system is ruuning all latest drivers and bios.
You can update the bios and all other drivers by hitting the thinkvantage blue key found on the top your keyboard or alternatively you down the drivers from.

Please do let me know of the update.

  • Can anyone help me solve the problem of text displaying very rough on my new ASUS PA279Q display monitor running off my MacBook Pro?

This is regarding a brand new ASUS PA 279Q, 2560 x 1440 IPS monitor. I'm connected via mini display port (into thunderbolt port on MacBook Pro) to display port on ASUS monitor; using cable ASUS included with the monitor. Mid 2012 MacBook Pro…full specs at bottom of this post.
I have resolution set at 2560 x 1440 which is the native resolution according to the ASUS spec. I tried the other resolutions available in my System Preferences and text displayed rough with those settings too. I've tried adjusting contrast, brightness and sharpness via the ASUS control panel and didn't solve the problem. Also tried calibrating via Mac's system preferences/display and that did not improve text display either. All the text on this monitor (no matter what software I launch, Finder, InDesign, Illustrator, MS Word, Excel, VMWare Windows XP, Windows versions of Word, Excel, Acrobat, etc, all are consistently rendering text the same way ---  ROUGH and with "HALOS" around each letter.
All point sizes of text and at various scales, display very rough on the screen. (My comparison is the retina display of my MBP and a Thunderbolt…so those two displays are my expectations.) I'm using the same MBP for both a Thunderbolt display (at work) and this ASUS at my home office.
On the ASUS it's not as noticeable when the text is on white backgrounds, but I'm a graphic designer and compose images with text all day everyday. Not to mention the specs on this ASUS PA279Q indicate it's built for the professional so I would expect better text rendering. I haven't even addressed color calibration and balance yet, because that won't matter to me if the text won't display any better than it is now.
I was so hopeful after researching all the specs on this monitor it would be a viable alternative to the glossy display of the Thunderbolt display. (Which, I do love the Thunderbolt display for it's clarity and how it displays crisp, clean text at all sizes. (This ASUS actually displays text decently if I increase the text so each letter is about 4" high. Which is pointless for practical purposes -- that'd be like doing page layout through a microscope!)
I kept holding off on getting a monitor for the home office thinking the Thunderbolt would be updated soon. I'd be sick if I dropped a grand on piece of 2011 technology only to learn a few days later an updated Thunderbolt display hit the market! Not to mention, I'm praying Apple comes out with a less reflective Thunderbolt display. The glare and reflection is the main reason I looked elsewhere for a large monitor; hence my asking for help. Hoping the ASUS text display issue can be worked out. My expectation is for it to display like the MBP retina and Thunderbolt display text. That possible?
Alternatively, I guess I could do the Apple Refurb Thunderbolt at $799. And see if there's a decent aftermarket anti-glare I could stick on it?
Thanks for reading my post. Hope someone can help; offer any suggestions? Words or wisdom?
Has anyone else had similar issues and figured out a resolution? Help!

    Retina, Mid 2012, 2.3 Ghz Intel i7
    8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    OS X 10.8.5
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    ASUS PA279Q

I uninstalled those two items. It still runs slow on start-up and when opening safari, firefox, iphoto, itunes, etc. It's not snappy like it used to be. Any other ideas? Thanks.

  • I can't calibrate any color profile for my iMac's display!

I think I accidentally deleted the color profile for my iMac's display
and now it won't let me calibrate any profile! All the colors are bright and washed out.
When I go to the display>color preference panel I get an error sound whenever I click ANY color profile, and it doesn't load. When I click "calibrate" it gives me the message: "Can not calibrate the display. The factory profile for the display could not be found."
But I wasn't even using the factory profile, and it won't let me choose any other ones, either (though a whole list does show up!)
I tried repairing/verifying the profiles in the ColorSync Utility, but it didn't help.
Is there somewhere I can download the profile and install it? I'm running a white 20" Core Duo 2GHz iMac (summer of 2006), if that helps.
    Thanks!

    seenew,
I'm wondering if you would have any luck with resetting the PRAM? PRAM settings hold some of the display preferences I believe.
See: "Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM"
If not, I am wondering if reapplying the Combo update for 10.4.7 might correct the display calibration issue or at least return it to the default?
I don't think that recreating the .plist file for displays will help.
As far as I know you cannot "download" the profile.
sorry if those suggestions don't help,

  • Iphoto displays distorted bright colors after calibrating display

Hi this issue has been occurring for the longest time. Sometimes when I calibrate my display or switch color profiles in system preferences and scroll up or down in Iphoto either (Events or Albums) A very bright distorted white and pinkish color will show throughout Iphoto covering all my photo's. The color intensity will change when I scroll up or down. This never happens unless I change the color profile in system preferences. Afterwards I will notice this in Iphoto. Is this a glitch? has anyone else experienced this issue? should I be concerned? Thanks

Thanks for the response. It doesn't just cover the thumbnails but all of Iphoto.
Scrolling up or down causes it to appear and change colors (either darker or lighter.) Once the distortion appears it doesnt matter if I scroll or not, it remains covering all of Iphoto.
This only happens after I change color profiles in system preferences.I haven't noticed this issue in atleast a month. Restarting the computer will fix this in Iphoto.
The colors that appear are red, pink, white or a combination. I rarely change color profiles or calibrate my display so it's a non issue for me but I was wondering if this was some sort of glitch or if other people have had the same issue as me.
Could there be something wrong with my Mac Pro? Next time it happens I'll take a screenshot of it.

  • T500 display very dim , possible mechanical failure?

    Hello,
It seems that my T500 LCD display has become very very dim, the display is barely visible.
After repeatedly turning it on/off it suddenly was able to display full brightness during one debug session... I even restarted it / shut it down multiple times, and it worked. HOWEVER, it seemed that the brightness was dependent on the angle at which the LCD was hinged, if I opened it all the way the screen became bright again (something over 90 degrees), if i started to close it (roughtly 30 degrees?), it became very dim. To me this sounds like a mechanical issue, possible a loose cable. Unfortuantely, I was not able to reproduce this again after this debug session, I suspected that as i was transporting it to/from work i may have changed some internal mechanical configuration.
Is there an actual 'mechanical' switch which drives the LCD brightness depending on the angular position of the LCD? I tried reading through the service manual here:
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/43y6630_04.pdf
I couldnt find any mention of any sort of LCD brightness mechanical hinge switch
    === other info===
From googling, the issue could also be :
    a) inverter issues
    b) backlight issues
    c) fuse on mother board?
As a quick test, i hooked up the VGA output to a secondary monitor and that works fine, so long as I go to the BIOS and set it to boot to the VGA first as the primary display.
    Any suggestions would be great!

Try going into the BIOS and switching to Integrated Graphics only. Does the screen still remains dark/dim?

  • OSD display of Brightness fixed

    Hi,
Download Lenovos version of the Intel Graphics driver
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-73677
This will fix the OSD display of brightness issue. The overall screen brightness will also be reduced. A good thing since my T400s was very bright event at the lowest setting.
Note that this driver has a lower build number than the driver from the Intel website so you will be prompted if you want to overwrite the later Intel driver.

  • T510 FHD display not bright enough

i prefer lenovo's matte finish screens--very little glare--great for business purposes.  However, i use the laptop outside a lot and therefore need the brightest possible display, for use in sunlight, where primarily i'm using outlook and Word.  In Feb 2010, i bought a T510 with the FHD (270nit; 95% gamut) screen, and it was perfect for outside--very bright and easy to see.
then my laptop was stolen! Insurance bought me a new one--same exact T510 (only with outlook 2010 instead of 2007) with same FHD screen.  Problem is that it's definitely not as bright.  i turned up brightness in windows and in thinkadvantage.  also maxed out brightness in the NVidia control panel (which did nothing, since that's really for video playback), and i even have played with the color-saturation brightness and other levels in the intel HD control panel (which increased the display somewhat, but still not as bright as my previous T510--also tends to wash out the colors and makes outlook a bit harder to read).
also weird: about once a day, on battery, the display dims almost to darkness, then gradually brightens back up in about 20 seconds.  i'm using max performance on all battery settings, so don't why this is happening.  not a big deal, but i thought it might be connected to the above problem.
i talked to lenovo warranty/service tech, who had no other ideas, other than to return the unit--which i don't want to do, as i've now got this one all set up.
    any suggestions, folks?
    much thanks,
    jeff

Nano display very dim, can only see when at a certain angle...

    Beth,
Have you check the brightness settings for your iPod?  If not, head to Settings and double check it is not set to a lower value.
If that isn't the case, it could very well be a hardware issue, meaning your iPod will need to be serviced.

  • New iMac not displaying Second monitor correctly... ATI graphic to blame?

I bought a new iMac a week ago, only to find out yesterday that new ones were released. My local Apple Store had no problems allowing me to swap my now outdated iMac for the new one that came out yesterday, and I am very grateful for that.
However, ATI's graphics are not getting along with my dual monitor setup. My display looks excellent on the iMac itself, but on the external 23" HD display from HP, it is all distorted and only shows 3/4 of the screen.
HP does not make drivers for OS X on their displays, since they are plug and play. Therefore, the issue is in ATI.
Anyone else having trouble with this?

    Danny,
It's probably just the monitor preferences aren't set up correctly. Please follow these instructions:
    1. System Preferences - Displays
    2. Using the iMac's display preference click the Arrangement tab and you will see the orientation of the monitors. You will need to choose the left pane and move it around to get the orientation you want. When you choose it both box in the preference and the window on the monitor will get a red band around the outside to help you orient where you are. It takes a little trying but I'm sure you'll figure it out.
You didn't say what you have done to troubleshoot the issue so I'm assuming you haven't looked at the monitor preferences yet.

    Roger
