Hi gillian1981,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you are seeing a recurring kernel panic on your iMac, the information and steps in the article below can help troubleshoot the behavior:
Diagnosing a recurring kernel panic can be difficult. If you need help with this process, consider bringing your Mac to a Genius at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for help. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, you can make a reservation (available in some countries only).
Tip: To help diagnose recurring kernel panics, record the date and time it occurs, and any information that appears with the kernel panic message.
Was the computer starting up, shutting down, or performing a particular task when the recurring kernel panic happened?
Is the kernel panic intermittent, or does it happen every time you do a certain thing? For example, were you playing a particular game, or printing at the time?
Does it occur only when a certain external device is connected, or a device is connected to a certain port?
Start with the troubleshooting steps in the section called "Isolate hardware or software as the cause of the issue."
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."

MacPro early 2008 kernel panic at startup - need help!
I have a MacPro early 2008 with OS 10.7.5 and I can't get it to restart without getting a kernel panic error. I get it at the grey screen at normal startup, safe mode, and trying to boot from the original install disk. I reset SMC and PRAM and still nothing. Running the extended diagnostics last night turned up no error codes. Any ideas?
Not sure what else to try at this point other than ordering a replacement graphics card which could be a chore to find in itself. Is there anyway to confirm if that is it?
Thanks!this is the last one I got before everything stopped.

Cinema Display 27" with iMac 24" Early 2008
I want to connect my Cinema Display 27" to an iMac 24" Early 2008. I recently bought two adapters, one from Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort and another one from DisplayPort to Mini-DVI. Unfortunately they won't work together. Before I continue buying more adapters I wanted to ask here, if anyone has any experience with this combination and can recommend working adapters to me. Thanks in advance.
I've seen offers on the web for services which will replace one graphics card for another in an iMac. You pay for the hardware and the service, and the service... ain't cheap... because it's not a trivial operation. I would never spend the money to have this done, because there will still be no certainty that things won't go kah-blooey later.
I sympathize. The iMac I'm currently using blew out its logic board two years into its three-year AppleCare warranty. It was replaced at no cost to me, of course, but as you pointed out in the case of your iMac, this was a well-known issue. And if it were to happen now, I'd be SOL because my iMac is now almost a full year out of its warranty.
On the other hand, I've held onto this iMac as my main desktop for a long time, much longer than I have for any computer in the past. 3-4 years is a good long time for a mostly-not-upgradeable all-in-one machine so I won't shed too many tears if that problem repeats (although of course I hope it doesn't). You've gotten three years plus out of your iMac, and while it might be tempting to pay for a repair, it might be better to just yank the resellable components (hard drive, RAM, etc.) and purchase a replacement Mac.
If you decide to go for the repair, you might find a sympathetic ear at your local Apple Store, if you come armed with some evidence that this component commonly fails and remain polite but firm. If you're lucky, they'll do the repair at no cost. Hope for the best, but expect nothing. -
How can I make a recovery disk for an imac 24 " early 2008 to April 2009 or connect via thunderbolt to another imacimac 24 " or connect via thunderbolt to another imac
annYou will only know about the hard drive when you try to access it in TDM from your other computer. If you cannot boot into TDM mode or if the drive does not appear on the new computer's Desktop then it is likely bad.
What you are thinking about as a recovery disk is the Recovery HD normally created when you install Lion or later on the computer. You boot from it as follows:
Boot Using Command+R keys:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
"COMMAND" and the "R" keys together.
3. Release the keys when the Utilities Menu appears. -

Specifications of the iMac described: 1.8 Ghz, 1GB, 80GB, 64 Mb Nvidia VRAM, Airport, 10.5.5
Back in August 2004 my dad bought us kids an iMac G5 for ‘family use’. It had a fresh install of 10.3.5 on it and compared to the (1999) iMac G3 it replaced it was amazingly fast.
The iMac never showed any signs of probable issues, until we decided to upgrade to Leopard in January 2008. Initially, this upgrade was only meant to be able to sync with the latest iPod nano (who demanded a newer version of iTunes).
After the installation the first thing I noticed was a high CPU usage, the machine seemed slower than ever and that with 1 Gb of RAM (the minimum sys. req. for Leopard are 512 Mb of RAM). Anyway, then the real thing started, it wouldn’t turn on anymore. We brought it to an Authorized Apple Reseller, the Tech department said the Logic board had failed. The costs of the fix weren’t the worth the computer anymore, so...end of story. The iMac was indeed one of the bad series, although it hadn’t any swollen capacitors.
My dad already made up his mind and bought himself a Macbook. He then told me that if I was able to get the broken iMac fixed, I could keep it. And so, I bought an ‘as-is’ logic board on Ebay. Last weekend I installed it, and it actually seemed to work! Yet, the problems are during the startup: the first thing I see is a screen full with horizontal lines flickering all the time, like an old TV with bad signal. Mostly it won’t boot and I get the message to restart the computer (kernel panic, I got dozens of logs already!). Sometimes it got stuck during booting (grey apple screen with gear in the middle) making the fans go crazy (after a while) and sounding what others describe as a ‘jetliner taking off’ sound. Sometimes the screen remains black. Generally it takes me 5 to 10 minutes to start up properly. Maybe it’s just me but it seems like when the computer has warmed up a little (by turning on and off on and on) starting up gets smoother. I mean the startup screen suffers from less horizontal flickering lines.
During the use of Leopard, I again get high CPU usage, especially when I use multiple programs at the same time, or when starting multiple programs. My iStat Pro said once that the fans were running at 4700 rpm and the heat of the CPU was about 70 Celsius. If I really want to **** my iMac off I should play a racing game. That just totally freaks him out! These problems could probably be solved by adding more RAM. Right?
The iMac also has a sleep problem. Sometimes after lets say an hour or so, you can’t get it out of sleep mode (by manipulating keyboard and/or mouse, the sleep light stops, but the screen stays off --> only solution is to restart). What happened to me once was that it slept so long that it just got into a deep sleep by turning itself off completely!
Here’s a list of what I tried so far:
- Disk Utility: Resetting the permissions, no problems were found.
- Resetting the SMU, both on the logic board itself as by pressing the power button 5 - 8 seconds, no improvements.
- Resetting the PRAM, no improvements.
- Did the Hardware test of the original install CD, nothing was found, all good.
- Did Archive and Instal, this actually messed my system entirely, cause it wouldn't boot at all and when starting up from the Leopard installation DVD it wouldn't recognize the Macintosh HD.
- Did Archive and Instal with the original disks, this disk did recognize Macintosh HD and so I installed the original system, 10.3. Booting problems and those flickering lines are still there though.
Next phase will be erase and install, but first I want to know what you guys think about all this.
Oh eh, One more thing; The guys at Applecare (phone support) told me that the replaced logic board was also out of warranty and so they couldn’t help me. But as the man on the phone was kind, he told me to go look for a special ‘driver’ on the net. He said that the driver should be able to resolve some of the issues described. He said that I had to give in the name of the LB on google and look for results. Is this bogus? Because I haven’t found anything useful on google so far. What’s the name (rather than a number) of the LB in the first place?
I hope you guys can give me some answers. I'm kinda desperate. But I still feel there's hope...The symptoms of a flakey power supply are sleep problems and you have done all the right things as far as resetting the SMU and PRAM. Your CPU usage can be tracked by going to Utilities>Activity Monitor - look and see what is hogging the memory. The flickering lines could also be an optical system going south.
The other thing you can do is run DiskWarrior or TechToolPro to see if you have corrupted directories. Preferential Treatment will let you check for corrupted preferences. -

Memory upgrade on iMac 20" Early 2008
I actually have 2 questions:
1) My iMac is running slow with CS6 installed and I need to upgrade memory. My iMac, Early 2008 with 2GB of memory, runs on iOS 10.9.5. Replace both slots with 2GB each or to replace one slot with 2GB makes much difference? I think DDR2 SDRAM SO-Dimm 800MHz is what I need. Does it matter what brand? Will this Dell brand works: Dell - Memory - 2GB - SO DIMM 200-pin - 800 MHz/PC2-6400 - unbuffered - non-ECC? It's the cheapest on Amazon. Or other recommendations?
2) I was set up with Mac and Window partitions. I seldom use Window. How can I combine the partitions to just Mac? I'm wasting 35GB of memory in an unused Window partitions.
Thank you.posting on a mac forum would get you more help.

My new iMac 27" keeps getting Kernel Panics
I bought an iMac 27" with 32GB of RAM and the 500GB flash drive, is updated to date.
I installed Logic Pro X and some libraries, including some that uses a reFX eLicenser USB. I also use a small LPK25 AKAI keyboard.
I keep getting kernel panics, about 5 since two days ago, this is the last one:

Locating drivers for Imac 24" (Early 2008) to work with Vista 32 bit
Hi all. I'm really having trouble with my Mac and was wondering if anyone has an alternative.
I have an Apple iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.8 24-Inch (Early 2008) running OSX 10.5.8. I recently partition my hard disk using Bootcamp and installed Windows Vista 32 bit.
This is where the problem starts. I misplaced the driver DVD's that came with the mac and i am in dire need of the drivers especially for the video card (ATI Radeon HD 2600 pro). I was able to download the drivers for the video card but, anytime i try to install or play a game for example, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare it always give me a error that no drivers were found and the game crashes.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Does the Apple website provide drivers for Imac 24" drivers for Windows Vista 32 bit?Patrick,
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You will either need to find your install discs that came with the computer or contact Apple and they will replace them for a nominal charge.
Going forward keep these and other original installation media in a safe place.

Very Low Sound Volume in Windows 7 - Bootcamp on 20" iMac from early 2008
Hi everyone,
I installed Windows 7 RC (build 7100 - 32 Bit version) using bootcamp on my iMac bought in early 2008 (2Gb Ram - 2.67 GHz).
The entire installation went well with no glitch or issues at all and I ran the bootcamp setup in Windows 7 to install the drivers. The problem I'm having is that the sound volume is extremely low in Windows 7. I can barely hear it when I turn the volume up to the max. I don't have volume problems in Leopard - only in Windows 7.
I also tried to install the RealTek Vista driver from my Leopard disk but still the same problem. As anyone run into the same problem? Any suggestions
Thanks!
Gruaui want to tell you my problem and my solution.
i have a late model macbook pro i installed windows7 rtm version x64.
and i always had windows on my mac (older models) with everthing working properly.
i did't have sound on my windows7 os. i tried everything form every forum.
they all had some problems my problem was that windows7 installed the driver by itself. but that my output was only 50% and i heard nothing.
everybody (including apple) say that you need the realtek/sigmatel driver
from the apple dvds or from the realtek site.
and i tried every version of the drivers (i have a lot of old apple cds)
but still no sound. windows 7 said drivers installed correctly.
installed.
High Definition Sound device or something like thad.
but now the solution.
i tried to install windows vista.
vista said drivers. installed (without apple drivers installed)
the driver name was:
Cirrus Logic CS4206a (ab75)
and these drivers are also on the apple dvds.(cirrus.zip)
so i installed windows 7 again.
and installed this driver first. then started bootcamp. drivers like normally.
everything now works perfect. -
Suspected iMac factory RAM problem, kernel panics?
I've lurked on these forums for a while, and had a mostly problem-free experience with my Mac, but I believe I have some circumstances which warrant creating my own topic. Here's my system specs:
iMac 21.5, mid 2011
2.7Ghz Intel Core i5
AMD 6770m 512mb
12GB RAM (2 2GB Apple default DIMMS, and 2 4GB Crucial DIMMs.)
OS X 10.7.5 Lion (the product listing in my username was made before the .5 update.)
I have had my mid-2011 iMac for 17 months, and began experiencing random kernel panics about once a day, for the last week or so. At first I suspected it to be an issue with the sound card because most of these panics happened while I was in Skype calls. I ran AHT and everything came up clean: I checked Skype, iTunes and Software Update (no updates were found for any of them.)
Even though AHT passed my RAM, I read up on kernel panics again--and even though my computer had no signs of being slow at the time of the panics, I dreaded that that might be the issue. I ran Rember, a frontend for memtest, with all of my RAM installed, and the computer panicked during the block sequential test. No other programs were running at the time. I have been using the 8GB of Crucial RAM for nearly a year without issues, but I still removed the bottom pair of DIMMS, which turned out to be the Apple-installed RAM. (It is likely that my father switched the Apple sticks to the bottom while helping me install the upgrade.)
I ran Rember again and found that the Crucial RAM passed all tests; since no other programs were running at the time, it leads me to believe the factory DIMMs may be faulty. My plan is to use the computer with only Crucial RAM for a day and make sure no panics occur, then run memtest with only Apple RAM installed; if a panic occurs, then I will know they're faulty.
My iMac has AppleCare, but the nearest Apple Store is about 3 hours away (no AASPs here, rural area.) Is it possible to get in contact with Apple and have them shipme some new RAM, in exchange for the old? Can I contact the store and UPS or mail the computer in for service and have it shipped back? If the RAM turns out to be faulty, should I just replace it with more Crucial RAM?
In case someone can pinpoint the issue as something other than a RAM problem, here's my latest kernel panic log, which occurred during memtest. During all of these panics, I was multitasking (games, iTunes, Skype) but hardware temperatures were never beyond what they usually are under load (Processor below 50c, GPU below 70.) The "BSD process in active thread" has varied from kernel-task to cider, as well as Skype.

Thank you for reading. I apologize for the long post.Had another kernel panic: this time during Skype, as usual. When the kernel panic occurs, the sound will skip and loop while the alert displays--and it always seems to happen when either me or my contact is speaking. I can be in call for several hours before this happens. The only major contributor to these panics I can see now is my headset.
I am using a Razer Carcharias headset (I know, Razer is starting to fail me), that has no drivers, and standard 3.5mm jacks. The mic doesn't work, as the iMac is only line-in, but that never bothered me because I prefer to use the built-in one. The headset is set as an output device both in Skype and in System Preferences -->Sound. I've gone several days without being on Skype, and still using the headset for iTunes and so on--no panics. But after a few hours of Skype, no matter what I'm doing as long as that's running: panic. Every time.
Some people on these forums have reported issues with panics when plugging in headphones or removing them, but I've never had that sort of problem. The log which I post below makes mention of a razerhid text that did not appear before I removed the mouse. I removed that kext by uninstalling another Razer driver before making this post, and testkext does not show any kext by that name running now.
But I can't figure out why a HID kext or driver would interfere with sound devices. It must be the headset somehow, which greatly disappoints me, as I've used the external speakers in calls for a year without issue.
Others have mentioned fears that these kinds of panics might be an issue with the logic board. I severely hope it's not a logic board issue: because of the wait times with Apple repair, I'd probably have to have my parents drive the machine in, drive back, wait a week, and repeat. This computer is quite literally my livelihood, but I can't ask them to drive two to three hours one way just for that. (Sadly, the only shops in a 50 mile radius that even mention Mac repair are those that have techs, in some cases uncertified, do repairs. Can't void my AppleCare like that.)
I am considering contacting Razer support and seeing if they have any advice on the issue. Here's my latest kernel panic log (ignore the razerhid kext, removed it already)

IMac 27in late 2012 Kernel Panic
Everytime I process photos on camera raw using my iMac, it hangs, white screens, then restarts on me. At first it I never had this issue but when it frequented into 3 panics per work day, I reformatted my iMac and installed only photoshop.
I checked on photoshop and turned off the OpenGL thinking maybe it was a RAM issue, but Claire (my iMac) still panics.
Please help. I need to get work done before I start losing money.

I have posted the same question in the adobe forum and their support has replied quickly saying:
That kernel panic refers to a bug in the OS code.
Applications cannot cause kernel panics, or machines to shutdown, freeze completely, or restart.
Only OS bugs, low level driver bugs, or hardware faults can do that.
please someone help me.i upgraded my ram with 4 8gb corsair value system.
could that be the cause?
Very likely - their was a thread on here where someone on here was having the exact same problem with Corsair RAM. If I can find it I'll post a link.
If you still have your original RAM, take out the Corsair and put in the original chips. If the crashes stop - voila!
Macsales and Crucial are the often recommended places to buy from - they guarantee their modules will work.

2006 iMAC intel core duo Kernel Panic + Black Curtain of Death
I've had this iMAC since 2006 w/o a problem. Lately been getting the "curtain of death" and screen to restart the computer. Saw similar discussions about these Kernel Panics. Brought the iMAC to Apple Store and tech thought it was a bad logic board and recommended not to fix it ($800+). I have trouble, as did the tech getting it to boot. Today I got it to boot and before it crashed again, I managed to run the Hardware Test from the original OS disc 1. This showed no problem in both tests. Did get the panic log (see below) can anyone make heads or tails of this? Thanks

The bootable clone would have had to be setup prior to the failure. Many people (myself included) keep redundant backups, I would recommend doing the same when you have either repaired or replaced the current machine. Macworld runs articles where users describe their own backup strategies, I'd recommend reading them and then deciding which works best for your needs.

Help with my MacBook Pro early 2008 kernel task use 120% of my cpu
I have the MacBook Pro early 2008 10.6.2 and when MBP start freeze for 5min and after the kernel task use 120% of my cpu all the time .... i have try clean install of leopard ,time machine to 10.5.2 but the problem still exist ... any help pls ?
OK. A Google search of "kernel_task" yielded the following link along with many others:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10330458-263.html
Evidently it will take some doing to narrow down exactly which task is causing the problem. This link has a list of suggestions for doing just that. Hopefully it will be a start.
Post back with how it goes.
Good luck!
