IMac 24-inch 2.4 GHz (circa 2007) freezes, reboots after several hours

Looked through all the other discussion topics and saw somewhat related issues, but my older system is acting very strange.
Starting back in October 2010, the system starting slowing down (heard the HD writing (clicking away)). Seemed to happen when a lot of windows were open. Reboot after reboot. About 2 weeks ago the system wouldn't reboot - tried all the special boot letters and buttons, no help. Took the system to the local "genius bar" - not much help, but they were able to reboot the system. They recommended backing up our personal data files in case it crashed. Did that. System continued to operate progressively slower each day. Thanksgiving weekend, wiped the HD and reloaded all the software, loaded Mac OS X (10.4.11), my older system can't load 10.5 or higher due to compatibility.
Now experiencing same problems as before, but iTunes now skips (new problem), system becomes unresponsive - freezes. Attempt to reboot results in the white screen of death with the question mark in the folder icon in the middle of the screen. But, after waiting a long time, overnight or 3 to 4 hours after being off, the system does reboot and operate fine. This seems very strange. Why would the system become so inoperable after performing fine? The only thing I can think of is that the system is overheating. So I loaded the temp widget (iStat Pro - very cool app) which provides instantaneous temp info on internal components, but I can't figure out how to data log the temp data so as to track temp rise trends.
Anyway, anybody have any recommendations?

It sounds like your HD is failing. First _do a full system backup immediately!!!!!!_
Then you can do some checks, first is check the S.M.A.R.T. status in Disk Utility (Applications-Utilities-Disk Utility) The status should say Verified, if it says anything else then your disk is definitely in trouble.
If the status is Verified then do an Apple Hardware Test following the instructions here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
This will test your system, if it comes back with error codes please post back and we can give you an idea what they mean. However as I mentioned originally I think your HD is getting ready to fail.

  • IMac very slow after several hours of use, esp. when using Photoshop

    Hi all,
I have a fairly new iMac (mid-2008 20" model) with a 2.4ghz Intel processor. I am a web designer and use this machine every day for my work. Several months after installing Adobe Creative Suite 3, I noticed that Photoshop was causing the cursor to jump and/or become jerky, as if the video card or processor were not keeping up with what's going on. This tends to happen after the computer's been in use for several hours or days after a restart. I have been following this in Leopard's Activity Monitor, and I noticed that Photoshop (being memory- and processor- hungry) taxes the processor more heavily than many other programs, which I expected. The strange thing, though, is that over time the Activity Monitor shows the "System" as taking up more and more processor capacity. I.E. when I first start up, the system is using 0-20% of the processor, the rest being available for the user; but after awhile, the system is requiring 50-90% of processor capacity, the result being that as soon as I switch into Photoshop from another program, the system is immediately overtaxed and starts moving very slowly (especially the cursor, as I said).
Now, here's the really strange part. As I said, this began happening a few months after I first installed Adobe CS3. I re-installed the software at Adobe's recommendation, and it was fine for another few months, but it began happening a few days ago, which is exactly the same time I shared a jump drive with a friend's worm-infected Windows XP machine. I know Macs don't get Windows worms, but is it possible that this thing has lodged itself on my system somehow and is causing it to run generally more slowly?
I appreciate any help you can give,
    Nathan

    Hi Nathan,
How much free disk space is available? Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is way better.
Not enough disks space could certainly slow your Mac down.
" but it began happening a few days ago, which is exactly the same time I shared a jump drive with a friend's worm-infected Windows XP machine. I know Macs don't get Windows worms, but is it possible that this thing has lodged itself on my system somehow and is causing it to run generally more slowly"
Mac can't read Windows files, so a file from the jump drive shouldn't be an issue unless you are running Windows on your Mac? via Boot Camp?
    If you don't have a disk utility that can clear log and caches files, get TinkerTool available here;
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/11967
Check your boot disk for errors: Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Select your disk, and click First Aid.
    Click Verify Disk.
If the disk needs repairs, do one of the following:
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer using Remote Install Mac OS X. Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk.

  • Dual 2.5 GHz G5 keeps freezing right after startup

I'm having a huge problem with my G5. Last night I put it to sleep and accidentally turned off a peripheral right after which immediately woke the computer from sleep. I waited a minute then put it back to sleep. When I woke the computer this morning it was behaving strangely with certain applications not opening so I opted to restart the computer. This was two hours ago. At first the computer wouldn't even boot up. I was getting a steady gray with the apple logo, then a steady blue screen. I zapped the PRAM and also reset the SMU. Right now it will boot up but immediately freezes within two minutes of loading the desktop.
I'm kind of freaking out because I'm working on some very important projects. I'm really not good with troubleshooting beyond what I already did. Any fast help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

Well, you can bet that shif doesn't trigger the bleep-filter.
BTW, I can actually recall writing a bleep filter in an application about 30 years ago or so. At least no Hollerith cards on that one, but it was close.

  • My iMac 20 inch 2.4 has developed a very annoying flicker. It looks like somebody is messing with the brightness but than really quick. Any ideas on how to solve this problem ?

My almost four year old iMac 20 inch 2.4 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo has recently been giving me a headache. The screen is flickering a lot. It looks like somebody is messing with the screen brightness at a really fast rate. I have no idea what it could be but have tried to recalibrate the screen, stopped certain dashboard apps, even changed the desktop picture and screensaver. Has anybody else had the same problem or could somebody help me in getting rid of this flicker. It feels like it is a software issue as it happens intermittently rather than continuous.

  • IMac 20-inch vs. 24-inch

Is there any difference between these two displays other than size?
I'm looking to buy an iMac to do some video editing, and I can't make up my mind. Any suggestions?

Having used both 20- and 24-inch monitors for video editing, (both with Premiere Pro, and the 20-inch with FCP), I would recommend getting the 24-inch model, because of the significantly larger screen real estate. While using the 20-inch monitor was decent, it felt cramped, with only a few video layers visible in the timeline when you're watching the video at 100% (SD video, not HD). On the 24-inch, everything was much more spacious, and I could easily utilize quite a few video and audio layers while watching the video real size.
Video takes up a LOT of hard drive space, so the larger the HD the better. Even so, I think that the larger screen (and better graphics card) should take piority above internal HD size, especially because of today's cheap external drives.
Based on this, I would recommend the 24-inch model, but be prepared to buy an external HD soon, especially if you do a lot of editing.
    Cheers,
    Ilya

  • Exchange 2007 - unable to connect to smtp after severall hours

    Hi,
We have a Windows SBS 2008 server with Exchange 2007 SP3. After severall hours we are unable to connect to the server with telnet on port 25 from outside. Sometimes a local telnet on the server still works but not always.
The only solution is to restart the server. The transport service can not be stopped.
Even after a fresh reboot the telnet session does not alway show the smtp banner.

    Hi Joost,
Is there any related error message left on Exchange server?
I have found a similar thread for your reference:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/5e2b3320-7c97-4b33-bd8e-e27768f51ec0/hub-transport-service-wont-start-and-keep-running-sbs-2008-exchange-2007
More detailed error message without sensitive informaiton is helpful for the further troubleshooting.
Also, SBS 2008 is different from Exchange 2007 on Windows Server, I suggest ask SBS Forum to double confirm this issue.
    Thanks

We have an iMac 24-inch Mid 2007 with maximum of 4G bytes of SDRAM, with OX X 10.9.4 Mavericks.  It is routinely locking-up with the rainbow wheel.  Especially with iTunes and Safari.
I'm wondering it it that Mavericks simply uses more RA that the machine allows when also running application, but I don't see the RAM is being maxed out per se' when in Activity Monitor either.  I've also ran the Disk Utility and have run scans wit Sophos, looking for malware, but have found no issues.
Any ideas?  Any better Malware/Spyware applications?

  • 10.6 will not install on my 20" intel imac circa 2007....HELP

I have a 20" intel imac that I purchased new in to 2007. It has the 2.1x (can't remember and I'm at work, sorry..) intel core 2 duo processor and 2G of memory. I have tried 2 separate 10.6 disks (one 10.6 and one 10.6.3) to upgrade my imac from 10.5.8 to 10.6 in order to use my new magic trackpad and both disks say "OSX cannt be installed on this computer". Please help. I have browsed on the forums around the net and have tried to find what the problem is, I have tried running the install and booting the computer from the disks and neither worked. I am not very proficient with programming or the behind the scenes of my mac, but I think I have managed to reset the PRAM , which was a suggestion on a forum, but still no luck. Can someone help me out. It would be greatly appreciated!

HP ENVY 4500 e-All-in-One Version 3.2.1 does not work on iMac 20-inch, Mid 2007. Only recognizes scanner not USB printer.
I would like to print via the USB connection instead of wireless (the wireless does work, and the scanner works via USB).
I tried connecting the printer directly (via USB) to my MacBook Pro laptop and it worked just fine.
How can I make this printer work on my iMac?
I spent 4 hours on the phone with HP and we did every combination of installation of drivers ad nausum and their bottom line is that it is a Mac problem.
Any help would be appreciated. Will be sending this printer back to Amazon if I can't make it work on the USB.
I am open to questions or suggestions
    Thanks,
    Chet

After 4 hours on the phone with HP and another hour with Apple (Mavericks support) no real solution other than check everything (removed everything from Login Items, removed all HP software anywhere in the system reboot, reinstall printer) then when nothing worked for the 4500, did an OS Reinstall (boot with CMD+R).
The Mavericks support group did open an incident (# 542875311) and I will update it when I figure out how to find it on the system.
My feel is that the base problem is that somewhere between the HP-Inkjet-SW-OSX-Mavericks_v12.34.49-2 package and the Apple HP Printer software in the Library (version 2.16.1) the app for printing via the USP Port just does not get installed for the mid 2007 20 inch iMac. The scanner is recognized on the USB Port and the Printer works fine on Wi-Fi. I have too many devices to burden my home network with anothe device. Also, every time I put any HP Printer on Wi-Fi, my router (Netgear N600 WNDR3400 running 12 to 20 devices depending on who is home) gets wonky (but that's anothe story...).
Additionally, when I attach the HP Envy 4500 to my MacBook Pro (2010) it works perfect - print and scan via the USB prot and both functions show in the System Preferences - Printers and Scanners just as expected and just as the 3050 does.

The Mac SuperDrive built into your Mac is the Optical drive.
    1. Insert your Windows DVD in Optical drive. Disconnect any external storage.
    2. Insert a USB2 Flash drive. This will be used to hold the BC drivers.
    3. Start BCA. Check the options to download software and Install Windows. You do not need to download Windows. The BCA will download the BC drivers to the USB.
    4. Partition your drive.
    5. You can see the Windows installer screens at https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/mac/5.0/help/#/bcmp173b3bf2.

  • IMac (24-inch Mid 2007), Mac OS X (10.6.8) small water spill on keyboard. Why can't I access web now?

I accidentally spilled water on keyboard for my iMac (24-inch Mid 2007), Mac OS X (10.6.8). Since then, I have dryed it out. Several keys aren't working so I tried another, albeit older, keyboard. That one worked fine but for some reason I cannot access tthe web on Safari or Firefox. It's still picking up my wiireless network and every other devise on the vetwork access the web just fine. There is also a progress bar that shows up while the computer is starting up that didn't used to be there. What can I do to fix this?

Sounds like your system is starting up in Safe Mode. Go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and select your hard drive and then restart your system.

  • Automatically mount USB 3.0 WD External HDD with iMac 24-inch mid-2007

I am using a 2TB Western Digital (WD) My Book Essential external Hard Disk Drive for my iMac 24-inch mid-2007 to use it as a Time Machine backup disk. This HDD only comes with a USB 3.0 connection.
Function-wise, it works with the iMac and Time machine uses it for backup without any issues.
However, the following problem occurs at every restart: the HDD does not mount automatically. And Time Machine stops backuping. To make it work again, I have to either unplug/replug the power cable of the HDD or unplug/plug the USB cable of the HDD so it mounts again and can be used by Time Machine. When unmounted, I tried to see if the disk was at least visible in Disk Utility so I could mount it from there but it does not appear in Disk Utility until I physically unplug/plug it back again.
For troubleshooting purposes, I have tried to use this HDD with my MacBook Pro Retina 2013 and I don't have the same problem as the HDD mounts itself automatically when I restart.
So I assume the problem reside in the way the iMac mid-2007 handle USB 3.0 as it was probably manufactured before the USB 3.0 standard was developped.
Would anyone know a possible workaround for this issue? I don't have too many hopes but one never knows...

    I am using Mavericks 10.9.1.
The problem was also occuring when I was running Mountain Lion.
It looks backward compatible to me except when it comes to automatically mount itself after a restart.

  • Imac 20 inch  mid 2007

I have am iMac 20 inch mid 2007 that keeps shutting down by itself. Is anybody familiar to this?

Sounds like either a problem with RAM or it is overheating.
Run the Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode to see if it detects any hardware problems.
    1. Reseat and/or replace the RAM modules, as per How to remove or install memory
    2. Have the iMac checked and cleaned. If it is full of dust or has a bad fan, it will not cool properly and shut down.
