IMac 24 inch resolution question
Hi there,
I'm considering buying a new iMac and can't quite decide which one to get. Basically I might (very occasionally) want to boot into windows (through Bootcamp) and play a few of the games I've collected. I know the iMac's not great for gaming but it would be nice if it could run reasonably (I'm using a 3 year old laptop at the moment so my expectations aren't that high)
Basically although I really like the look of the 24 inch screen I'm worried that the extra screen size might push games from "just about playable if it's not that new" to completely impossible at the native resolution. So, which resolutions can I select (in Mac OS X and in Windows) using a 24 inch iMac? I've searched far and wide but can't find any reliable information about this. Does the 24 inch iMac support the 1680x1050 resolution that the 20 inch version does? (I'm guessing maybe not, since the 23 inch cinema display doesn't, but it's obviously a completely different piece of hardware so I've no idea really) Which other resolutions? Is there any difference between the options in Mac OS X and in Windows?
Secondly, on my laptop at the moment in the display settings (in Windows for the Ati video card) I can choose to disable "panel scaling" - this means that if I run in a resolution below the native resolution it only fills the centre of the screen rather than the whole of the screen. This avoids the blurry image problem that you get from running at a less-than-native resolution on a flatscreen (obviously at the expense of a smaller picture)
Does Mac OS X support a similar feature? Would I be able to run in, say, 1680x1050 or 1280x800 and only use the centre of the screen or could it only be stretched to fill the whole screen? Finally would this work in Windows on the iMac as well? (It's dependant on the graphics card driver and I don't know what Apple's windows drivers behave like)
Sorry for the mountain of questions but I can't find any information about this at all - it would be really really good if someone with a new 24 inch iMac could have a look and see what choices there are!

According to various internet sites, the chipsets in two cards available for the 24 inch iMac, the Geforce 7300 GT and Geforce 7600 GT, both support "floating point texture". I can't find any specific references to the implementation in the Apple 24 inch iMac Intel, but I would doubt it is delibrately removed.
So, what good that actually does you is anyone's guess, but yes, it seems to be in there.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -

I have an imac 27 inch O SX 10.6.8. using iphoto 11 Version 9.1.5. I have scanned some photos at very high resolution with each photo being about 45MB. They're saved to desktop. How can I reduce the size of the scanned photo's they are crashing iphoto.
What format are they? Tiif? Jpeg? You can compress them with a lot of apps - including Preivew and just about any graphics editor out there. I'm not sure that 45mb would crash iPhoto thogh, are yo sure that's the cause? I know that some folks have mentioned pixel dimensions causing issues, as can color profiles.

New iMac 27-inch: 3.4GHz Periferal questions
I am considering this new iMac, 27-inch: 3.4GHz. I have a late 2009 mac pro 8 core 2.26GHz with 6GB of Ram and is loaded with SATA hard drives. I have a lot of video on the HDs and want to see if
1. is an inexpensive way or a JOB array so I can access my data via dual thunderbolt.
2. I have a FW800/ESATA 1TB external drive that I want to access.
3. I also have a 30 inch cine display from 2006
4. Finally if have a Presonus FW800 Firestudio that I need to interface
I know this is a lot, but is there an all in one thunderbolt to FW, ESATA and monitor adapter.
I also want to know if anyone can speculate on how much faster this new iMac will be compared to my 2009 mac pro. I am not ready to pay the money for the new Mac Pro, because I don't of a lot of video editing any longer and read a review that the iMac can handle so pretty heavy video editing.

I have a friend who lives in the middle east & has kanex xd & he wants to connect it with the imac 27 inch from Satellite receiver or PS3 though HDMI cable,, but yet the signal is PAL not NTSC in the middle east,, so will the imac 27 inch play the movie from the satellite in full colour or in blue & says cannot play the movie because its not NTCS ? because this is U.S version of imac then he might need an convertor?
the same as if he want to record any hdmi or analog device from his video recorder device,,but the input is pal,,so will it plays normal in the U.S machine or will he find any trouble ???

HP ENVY 4500 e-All-in-One Version 3.2.1 does not work on iMac 20-inch, Mid 2007. Only recognizes scanner not USB printer.
I would like to print via the USB connection instead of wireless (the wireless does work, and the scanner works via USB).
I tried connecting the printer directly (via USB) to my MacBook Pro laptop and it worked just fine.
How can I make this printer work on my iMac?
I spent 4 hours on the phone with HP and we did every combination of installation of drivers ad nausum and their bottom line is that it is a Mac problem.
Any help would be appreciated. Will be sending this printer back to Amazon if I can't make it work on the USB.
I am open to questions or suggestions

ChetAfter 4 hours on the phone with HP and another hour with Apple (Mavericks support) no real solution other than check everything (removed everything from Login Items, removed all HP software anywhere in the system reboot, reinstall printer) then when nothing worked for the 4500, did an OS Reinstall (boot with CMD+R).
The Mavericks support group did open an incident (# 542875311) and I will update it when I figure out how to find it on the system.
My feel is that the base problem is that somewhere between the HP-Inkjet-SW-OSX-Mavericks_v12.34.49-2 package and the Apple HP Printer software in the Library (version 2.16.1) the app for printing via the USP Port just does not get installed for the mid 2007 20 inch iMac. The scanner is recognized on the USB Port and the Printer works fine on Wi-Fi. I have too many devices to burden my home network with anothe device. Also, every time I put any HP Printer on Wi-Fi, my router (Netgear N600 WNDR3400 running 12 to 20 devices depending on who is home) gets wonky (but that's anothe story...).
Additionally, when I attach the HP Envy 4500 to my MacBook Pro (2010) it works perfect - print and scan via the USB prot and both functions show in the System Preferences - Printers and Scanners just as expected and just as the 3050 does.

IMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) Constantly Crashing to Black Screen, Has Troubles Rebooting
I have an iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) with a 3.4 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, and AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1GB of memory.
Every day since Tuesday, the computer has been randomly crashing once or twice a day to a black screen. It doesn't matter what I am doing (surfing the web in Safari, listening to music in iTunes, etc). If there is music playing, I will get a constant stutter of audio in addition to the black screen.
When restarting the computer, it instantly goes back to either a black or gray screen after the Apple logo passes. Attempting to reset the PRAM or SMC does not fix the issue from reoccuring and I usually have to keep the computer unplugged for an extended period of time before I can get it back up and running. Sometimes I have to boot the computer up into AHT (Apple Hardware Test) or Internet Recovery to get the computer running back to normal.
When running both a normal or extended AHT, all of the hardware that is tested ends up passing. When running Disk Utility, it shows there are no hard drive related issues.
The question that I have is this an issue related to the AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card?
Back in March, my iMac's display began suffering issues with greyish smudge marks behind the glass alongside issues where it would freeze and become distorted alongside the black screen. When I brought it into an Apple Authorized Service Provider back in March of this year to have everything checked out, they replaced the display and nothing else as they could not replicate any of the graphical issues despite numerous calls to AppleCare. I ended up doing an erase and install of Mavericks and the 10.9.2 update ended up being a temporary fix for the issue.
Should I call back AppleCare and tell them I need my video card replaced or is it something else?The last panic log was from 05/15/2014:

Imac 27-inch 10.9 recovery disk will not start
hello everyone,
I am having boot up problems on my imac 27-inch.
I pressed the power button and press and held the Option key, I chose the
Recovery disk, but the Recovery disk did not start, instead I have the grey Apple logo and it keeps running but will not start.
The imac 27-inch was bought refurbished in late 2010
I also have imac apple care from 2010 never used. First time problem.
On pressing the Option key during startup,
Mach Hard disk and Recovery Disk 10.9 is displayed.
Choosing mac hard disk does not boot up the OS instead I get a big Zero sign with line through it or a big flash question mark sign.
Choosing the Recovery Disk 10.9 does not boot up Disk Utility, instead I get the grey Apple logo.
Please help. Thanks.Your Recovery HD is damaged. You may be able to repair it using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.4. Under the Windowm menu select Disk Center. Select your boot volume from the list. Click on the Recovery HD tab then click on the Create a Recovery volume for this disk. Select Mavericks from the dropdown menu labeled "Recovery HD version to be applied." See if that works. I have an imac 20-inch Late 2006 model on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, somehow the application ccleaner has deleted my photos from my iphoto library. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine.
To restore photos I have followed the steps below
Quit iPhoto.
Connect your Time Machine drive.
In the Finder, open the folder containing your iPhoto Library. Unless you've moved your iPhoto Library, it can be found in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
Enter Time Machine. (Time Machine can be found in the Dock or in the /Applications folder.)
Choose your desired backup. The timeline on the right side of the screen displays a purple tick mark for each of the backups stored on your Time Machine drive.
Select the iPhoto library you would like to restore, and click the Restore button.
I dont get the option in step 6 as I dont have an iphoto library file to choose? Does anyone know why?Hi Barry
Thanks but as mentioned all is intact, even at step 3 I can see the current library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library which has no photos, but when I access time machine any point before the NOW option the iphoto library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library is missing from the finder window.

Hi,
I just received my new iMac 27 inch. I configured all the starting things, then I connected it to my network to transfer some files from my windows pc.
I was transferring a movie from my windows pc, while doing that I went to download Mozilla Firefox 4 beta. I installed it then I went to my application folder to start Firefox, and just when I clicked the icon my iMac went off. Now I'm trying to turn it on but no matter how I press the back button, it doesn't turn on.
What should I do?A quick question, Apple support toldme that they will send a new imac, and that I have to return the one I have. I received instruction by mail that I will be receiving prepaid labels from their carriers to return the iMac. Then later I received a new email about a new order that will be delivered between Oct 11 and Oct 18. The problem is that the email reference the old order, so when I go to the Order status link it shows me the old order with the tracking number for the one I have.
So I'm wondering if that is the order for the new iMac they will send me, and if so, there's no problem if the iMac I will return hasn't yet been delivered to them? Or Fedex will bring my new iMac and take the one I have to return?

Question is asked over and over again, I know. But I was a bit suprised when I saw that the new Apple 27 inch LED Cinema Display can support input for 1920 x 1080 FULL HD but the iMac 27 inch doesn't??
I hate to see only 720p on my iMac when I play playstation 3Hi and welcome to Discussions,

When fed with the correct specified video-signal the 27" iMac can display 1080p.
The "problem" lies in the used converter (or the PS3 not having a DisplayPort).

You can also use virtual emulation software to run Windows rather than Boot Camp. They have the advantage of running concurrently with OS X.
