IMac 24 makes a chirping noise

My iMac 24 (2008) makes a loud chirping noise, usually when switching apps, or when doing certain operations within an app such as iTunes, Photoshop, Safari, Firefox, Aperture, etc.
For example, this recording was made when I switched from Firefox to iTunes and opening the store: http://bit.ly/iChirp
It made this sound for a few minutes before I started recording.  This is an internal sound, not a sound from the speakers.
What's wrong? Can it be fixed?

Your iMac should not chirp like any kind of bird?

  • My Core 2 Duo iMac Makes a wierd Noise and odd Ram Availability.

I Bought this iMac from mac connection.
    A 17inch 2GHz Core 2 Duo.
The first one I returned because of dead pixels.
The Second one, Which Iuse has been great. But for the Past Month, I noticed a weird clicking noise from the speakers. I tried wiping out the HD and reinstalling the OS, I checked the Ram, I performed maintenence progrmas I have, different set of external speakes, headphones, I only can reduce the sound of it if I max out the Volume on the computer.
I would make a light click noise If I opened front row, opened a program, Booting up before coming to the desktop. I would make one click each time anyone of those things opened. ((((Allmost like a click sound of Static)))))))
I love the computer overall but this is an annoyance and I fear something could be wrong with the sound card. I don't know if an update to the drivers or future firmwire update would do anything.
    Anyone have an idea??
I do't beleive I can return it to Mac Connection since I'm onto my second iMac with them, any issues, I have to work with apple now.
It also does the noice whn I adjust the Volume, Almost like static. I fear of a faulty sound card for some reason.
Before, It used to show out of the 1GB of Ram, that there were 820 plus to 750.
Right now, I only have Mspace running, Thispage, and iTunes And Theres only 186 Mbs of ram left free. Is the Ram Zapped or what.
On the iStat pro Widget. It shows 177 MB Free Active and 844MB used.
    I worried about this

I do now about the the Use of Virtual Ram via Hard Drive. I did learn that The Ram still stays pending to open progams faster.
But see this. When I first Bout this computer, I would have abbout 750 to over 800+ MB free. Last 4 weeks, I still have the same programs installed and Now I start up with 620MB. Sometimes having iTunes open, This web page, my amail page, iPhoto, I Ram availability goies as low is 62 MB which is very low, considering having 1GB of Ram.
I see you have a similar iMac as I do, If you have a ram monitor widget. How much ram does your system start out with.
First Few Weeks it would have about 800MB, Now, ever sinnce I discovered that clicking noise out of the speakers when I nagigate the apps, thats wh I discovered the system starting with 620MB. I don't have different programs from before.
I don't feel good about this that with so few programs, even having light weight programs running, so much ram is used.
Just like Right now. I only have this page running, I only have 288 MB free. I understand what you said but I don't beleive so much ram should be out of place like that with this amount of ram.
Heck Even my 12 1.2GHZ iBook G4 with 768MB has more free ram with the same running apps.
Does anyone have any idea of my clicking problem?

  • My iMac makes strange clicking noises on the back of it

It makes some random clicking noises on the back of my iMac that just irritates me alot. What is wrong with it? I purchased it like 2 months ago and I don't think it's a virus or anything. Can anyone help?
    Thank you

    Hello:
I suggest you take the computer in for diagnosis.  Strange noises are not normal.
Incidentally, there are NO viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - NONE.

  • Updated: Firewire audio recording on brand new iMac makes weird digital noise

I am running Ableton Live 8 Suite on a 2011 Entry level iMac. i am using an Maudio Firewire 410 with a FireWire 400 to 800 cable. recently when i record audio (say from a guitar) the audio will cut out and be replaced by a wierd low freq digital noise. i uploaded a clip of it. its not just static. it will come in and out as i play.
    http://cl.ly/3f3R2H2z3H3K3F3z1P3d
    Things i have tried:
    -different guitars
    -Maudio FireWire Solo (different interface)
    -uninstalled and reinstalled the driver
    -Different firewire cable
-turned off Bluetooth on computer and Bluetooth devices
    -turned off airport
when i restart the interface or computer it works for about 5-10mins then cuts out again...
but i still get normal audio through it (iTunes, internet, even Ableton)
it seems to be isolted to just audio input. i had multiple tracks playing in Live. my input was working fine but when it punched in to record it morphed to the weird digital noise.
i could record a single channel fine with nothing else playing but recording with multiple channels playing seems to "lock up" the audio though i am only using 25% CPU...
is this something with my iMac or Lion? i changed out interfaces, cables, and drivers....thats the only thing i can think of…
any thoughts from you smart people out there?

ok so i tried a differnet cable and the same thing happened...

  • Why does my iMac make a buzzing noise any time my iPhone 5 is near it, even when the phone is on wifi?

It reminds me of back in the day when your computer speakers would get interference whenever your cell phone is near it, but this is just a constant buzzing coming from my iMac whenever i have my iPhone 5 near it (e.g. sitting on the table next to the iMac when it's plugged in). My iPhone 4 and my last few phones before that never did that. I thought it might have been the LTE signal causing it, but it does it when it's on wifi as well.
The sound is louder if I have messenger running for some reason. It's odd as ****! If anyone has any ideas, please let me know!

I forgot to add, it's a Verizon phone so it's CDMA. It used to be only GSM phones that did this.

  • Chirping Noise from Hard Drive Causing iMac to Freeze Up!

Hope someone can give me some pointers to figure this one out!
The computer will begin making high-pitch, squeaky chirping noises from the upper left corner (near the hard drive I think):
    http://homepage.mac.com/adamntaya/.cv/adamntaya/Sites/.Public/Chirping%20Noise.m p3-zip.zip
Then after a while it will totally freeze up and I have to reboot. It is happening more and more frequently. Already tried doing a Hardware Test, with good results. Already tried downloading MacJanitor. Already tried a PRAM Reset. Nothing has helped the problem yet.
    What can I try?
    iMac G5 20" 1.8 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   160MB HD, 1G Memory (1st Gen)

I had this exact problem, (exactly the same sound) with an eMac I had about a year ago. Our situations were the same, and after many calls and hours talking to Apple I got wound up getting a new iMac to replace to eMac, just paying the difference. They first wanted to take the computer in, which is what will happen when you call, but I would say that you would like to have a new one sent to you, as I assume you ordered it offline. Your problem and the one that I had seem to be quite rare, but nonetheless you should get a new computer.

Dear Mr. Toad (my all-time favorite ride at Disneyland ;-) ..
Thanks so much for your detailed reply.. my netbook is in the bedroom, turned off.. I (so far) only use it in the evening, in the bedroom.. I've saved your response, and will try your suggestions, and let you know if they solve the problem I described. I really appreciate you taking the time to post such a detailed reply..
I can't answer your Thunderbird "configuration" questions, because I'm in the living room, using the crap Vista laptop, on which I plan to install Thunderbird, and then take Windoze Mail out in the street and drive over it a few times.. I'll get back to you one way or the other, and let you know if your instructions solved the problem, or not..
I don't understand why Thunderbird "out of the box", so to speak, simply doesn't forward HTML emails with embedded graphics, (like Outlook Excess, and Winblows Mail do).. without having to go through those steps. I personally HATE HTML email, but over the years, it's become more and more prevelant.. so it's a problem I must fix..
    Thanks again..
    Harv..

  • My Imac does not start and make a terrible noise like an alert.

Please help me, my Imac does not start and make a terrible noise like an alert when try to start ,the Imac keep a grey screen when try to start and keep there.

Sounds like it is time  to take it to an Apple Store or AASP to be serviced. You can also try troubleshooting using Apple's Gray screen appears during startup instructions.

  • IMac hard drive making a chirping noise!!

IMac hard drive making a chirping noise!! Its a quiet chirp that goes along with the hum of the hard drive. It doesn't always do it but I'm worried anyways. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it a problem?

They told me it's likely the CPU Fan - a known issue - and said that resetting the SMU was the first step towards fixing it. I performed that reset, but the crickets in my machine are still alive and chirping. Step #2, as it was told, is to take the machine back to the Apple service center to be repaired. BUT - looking through other threads here on the same issue, it looks like the issue is currently handled by replacing the CPU fan with another identical model and that because the underlying engineering issue has not been fixed, the crickets will return.
So if this problem is not harmful to the computer, I may be ignoring it for the time being.
Regarding the recalls though, where did you find the serial number range for the recall? I should check mine against that list.

  • Envy 7640 makes chirping noise, as does replacement

    Sorry for the RANT!
Bought Envy 7640 and noticed audible chirping noise from power unit. Researched forums etc and found it is a common problem. Contacted HP support (very hard to find) and spent hour explaining to agent including links to forums/youtube of noise etc etc.
No problem he says - send you a new power unit
Are you sure as this doesnt appear to solve the problem say I
Oh yes says agent this will work.
Complete new printer arrives and problem is exactly the same.
I now have to waste more time getting UPS to pick up a second printer - what a complete and utter waste of my time and HP money
Dont see i have a choice but to take the printer back to the shop and buy another brand, cancel the ink package and start again.
Can i find the support contact details again - can i ****
Unless anyone can help me on this forum i will NEVER EVER go near another HP product as long as my arse points the floor

  • My iMac makes a continuous beeping noise and a blank screen.

My 2007 iMac is making beeping noises and it's just a grey screen. Nothing is happening. I've tried to restart and unplugged it and still does it. Does anyone know what is wrong and can I fix it myself?  Thanks

    Beeps on startup:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images.
5 beeps = processor is not usable

  • "Chirping" noise every 3-5 seconds

Starting two days ago, a strange chirping sound seems to be coming from my iMac at 3-5 second intervals. I checked the HDD diagnostics and it appears to be functioning correctly (according to DiskWarrior). I know this is a very general issue, but any suggestions as to what it may be? Is it something I should have looked at?

Azeroth, I know what you are talking about. It's a repetitive clinking/chirping sound caused by the hard drive head parking whilst idle (power saving). I didn't have it with my former MBP/Fujitsu 7200, but my new MBP (Hitachi 7200) was driving me nuts with this sound. Plus it wears the hard drive out, ironically.
There is no way to fix this through System Preferences. Unchecking "Put the hard disks to sleep when possible" has no effect, nor does pushing the slider to never sleep.
The fix is unfortunately a little long winded but it works, and I'm ecstatic. Here it is:
Hard drive behaviour must be modified at a lower level, i.e. power management.
    hdapm is the answer.
    1) Enable root user: Open Directory Utility located in Application » Utilities. You may have to unlock Directory Utility to make changes. Once it's unlocked, go to Edit » Enable Root User, and then type in a password for your root user. Now logout and there will be an option for Other user. Log in as "root" and use your root user password.
    2) Create usr/local/bin folder :
/usr/local/bin doesn't exist by default. You have to create it.
To create the folder (if it doesn't exist already) and open a Finder window:
In the terminal... (Utilities/Terminal) enter these 3 commands in succession
    sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/bin
    cd /usr/local/bin
    open .
    3) Download hdapm, a command line utility for hard drive power management, here: http://mckinlay.net.nz/hdapm/
    4) Drag and drop hdapm executable into usr/local/bin and hdam.plist into Library/LaunchDaemons (to enable hdapm to run at every startup)
Reboot. Your hard drive is now running at maximum power settings.
    FIXED! NO MORE CLINKING/CHIRPING NOISES
    Disable root user

  • 27" iMac processor / hard drive noise

I just picked up a 27" iMac with the 1 T HD. I can hear the hard drive any time the computer is "working". Took the first one back to the Apple store and exchanged it, thinking I had a defective machine. The replacement makes the same noise.
Anyone else having this issue? Are these things supposed to be this noisy?

    Same problem with my iMac 27" C2D 3.33 with a ST31000528ASQ HDD.
Always working, but no Spotlight indexing and Activity Monitor reports no activity.
Every 5 or 10 seconds, there's write or a read.
    Very annoying.
    Any idea?

  • Nokia DT-901 chirping noise 24/7

Is it normal that DT-901 wireless charger makes chirping noise all the time, even without phone on the charging plate? Noise comes from the power supply (Nokia AC-301E), not from the plate. The noise is not loud but I have good hearing so it gets annoying after awhile. And the advantages of wireless charging are lost when I must unplug the power supply when not in use.
I recorded a sound clip so you can listen how it sounds: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0wpylcbocjtoj3w/DT-901.mp3?dl=0

MV78 is looking for someone which a Nokia DT-901 which does not chirp, because he then takes the hurdle to exchange his Nokia AC-301E. The (global or his local) Product Manager for the Nokia DT-901 would be stupid to answer, if this is not a general issue – he would just increase the return-rate of his own product. My Nokia AC-301E chirps as well, therefore, I cannot add anything to this thread. farby or jimmyireland, do you have a Nokia DT-901 and does it not chirp?
