IMac 24" not so quiet - "hum problem" - please read

Hello everybody,
It has been now 2 days and a half that I received my brand new 24" inches iMac (2,66 Ghz 4Gig of ram etc). I really wanted a definitive desktop computer to use at home and I went for another iMac. I'm saying another imac because as soon as the iMacs aluminium were out on the merket (end of the year 2006) I decided to buy one of them and things didn't go well.... to make a long story short after 10 days with no problems at all it started blowing smoke! That's correct, I had to return the item and since the replacement the gave me was not fitting my standards and I asked for my money back.
I now thought that I would give this iMac another try and I stepped up to the 24inches. Gorgeous display, "only" 3 dead pixels, but not a big deal, I'm not really bothered by them. The thing that absolutely makes me cringe is the noise fan. I have to say that that first aluminium that I owned was absolutely silent, you could not almost tell if it was turned off or on. It was amazingly quiet.
Now this new 24 inches one that I have it's not very quiet.It makes a sort of a constant faint humming sound which is think might come from one of the fans. I have looked online and some other people had a similar issues. I watched a few videos on youtube and those cases were rather extreme, mine is consinsest but less "dramatic".Hard to really catch the noise with a compact digital camera.
I checked with istat and these are the stats: 1198rpm (cpu fan) 1600rpm (hard drive) 799rpm (optical drive). Even tried to move the machine somewhere else, to lay a soft towel on the desk and at last but not least I resetted the SMC, doing the 30 seconds unplugging then aldcmd+pr combination.
Any suggestions on what I should try to do?
I don't think that return the iMac would be a good idea. They NEVER give you a brand new computer, a replacement is always something that eventually has been refurbished or so.
I thought this would have been extremely quiet, but I was wrong and that's quite of a downer.This makes it sound like a PC almost. I would like also to know what's your situation, in a extremely quiet room, with no AC on etc can you hear something from ur iMac when it's on or is it VERY quiet?
I went to some malls and tried to lean down towards the screen and speakers to see if you hear anything like the hum that I'm experiencing with my imac but not luck....that can be also because there is always some background noise in those places, some light music etc.
If living in the US i would definitely go to an apple store to have it checked but the closest place is pretty far away and they do only assistance, and they don't really have a good name too!

Roger I shall thank you for your reply but I have already been to a couple of malls and I tried getting closer to the speakers area. I have to admit that i could NOT notice any humming or whirring sound.
I REALLY don't understand how this imac should work it seems to me that everyone is having troubles with these machines. Soma Pc users might also be used to their old and messy pcs so they don't really notice if these is some humming or not.
I reckon that those are just empirical tests though and they don't really mean much. I wanted to take it in to the only assistance place that we have in this area, but in less than 2 days they are will close the shop for a month.
Now I have a few options:
1) I pretend that all this is Normal (as i said before for someone if could be, and I am afraid someone would this im making too much fuss about it)
2) I wait for a month and I keep using the machine intensively, then when the shops re opens I can take it in and let them see if they can change something.
It will be under warranty then and if it is ONLY fan issue I guess they will be able to fix it. Right now I don't have any apple care but for 3 months i should be protected and i can always activate that later in time.
3) I send back everything (will not ask for any replacement) and I'll order again......the latter is something I really would not like to do, takes so much and too many hassles.
4) Eventually the guy can say that I can send the iMac to some other assistance in italy and they can look that up there.... not sure how much that would take though.
Will give these options a thought, in the meantime Id like to keep hearing some feedbacks about people who OWN and use their Alu iMac on daily basis and are a bit of NITPICKERS like I am.
I usually work always in a extremely quiet and calm room and I'd like to have a pc which is not making any noise at all, stone silent so to speak.
Looking forward to getting more replies.

IMac will not start up. Help please!

Earlier today I was surfing the Net with Safari. Suddenly, the page I was loading stopped loading. The arrow pointer would not move if I moved the mouse. The menubar clock's seconds stopped changing. The entire system was frozen. After about 15-20 seconds, the iMac's fans started blowing louder. After another 30 seconds, I gave up and tried the force quit key combo. No dice. So then I held down the power switch, forcing a shutdown.
Now, when I try to boot my iMac G5, I get one of 3 outcomes:
(a) I hear a faint fan sound, and perhaps the hard drive makes a sound, but nothing else happens.
(b) I hear the startup chime, but the chime doesn't finish. It's cut off and the iMac turns off. Sometimes the light on the front of the iMac comes on for a moment, sometimes not.
(c) The iMac starts up normally. After a minute or so, the whole system freezes again.
I use this Mac at work for all my medical records. Now I have no access to my medical records (but I do have a backup, thankfully). Without a working medical record system, I've had to cancel all my patients for the day and I'm scrambling to find a solution.
I found an article in the Apple knowledgebase. I followed the article step by step. It's called iMac G5: Troubleshooting when your computer won't turn on, and can be found at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908 .
With the back cover removed, and the power cord plugged in, LED 1 lights.
When I hit the internal power button, LED 2 and LED 3 lit up, and OS X started up. The login window appeared. Since my keyboard and mouse were not plugged in, a window came up saying that the iMac was looking for a bluetooth mouse. I don't have one, so I plugged in my USB keyboard and mouse, but the mouse never saw power (the red laser never came on). From that point forward, I couldn't get the mouse to work and after maybe half a minute, the fans started blowing again. So I think this was the same as my Mac starting normally, but then freezing. This time, it froze before I could login.
One thing I noticed: the iMac had been off and unplugged for more than 45 minutes. The last time it had been off and unplugged for more than 45 minutes, when I plugged it in an tried to boot it, it actually started up and I got to the finder. But then after I started to run Disk Utility, the OS froze up again. So it seems, if I leave the iMac off and unplugged for some length of time (45 minutes works), it will boot into OS X.
Okay, so on with the steps described in the article. I held down the internal power button, and the iMac shut down. I hit the SMU button (with the iMac off). Then, I tried the internal power button again. This time, LED 1 lit, and LED 2 lit, but then LED 3 does NOT light up, and the computer does not start up. I just hear a light fan blowing (near the processors, I think) and the hard disk makes a few clicks, nothing more. No chime, no display.
So then I reset the SMU again, by pressing the SMU button (which turned off the computer). Then I pressed the internal power button again. The computer still doesn't start up normally. Same as above.
Reading through the article it asks, after pushing the internal power button, does LED 2 come on momentarily, or not at all? Actually, neither. It comes on, and stays on. The article has no instructions for you if LED 2 comes on and stays on. At this point, I'm stuck.
So I checked another knowledgebase article, About the iMac G5 diagnostic LEDs. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86815
It says:
- LED 1 indicates that trickle voltage from the power supply has been detected. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned off and your power supply is working correctly.
- LED 2 indicates that the main logic board has detected proper power from the power supply when the computer is turned on. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and the power supply is working correctly.
- LED 3 indicates that the computer and the LCD display are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and video signal is being generated.
- LED 4 lights only if the computer detects an over-temperature condition. This LED will be OFF when the computer is turned on and running at the correct temperature.
On my iMac, LED 1 and 2 light and stay on, while LED 3 does not (except for the first time I tried this, see above). This seems to indicate a problem generating a video signal.
So maybe it's a problem with the video signal, but I think something else is going on too.

right down to the "Troubleshooting when your computer won't turn on" 2nd LED staying on when the procedure only gave two options: Momentarily on or not coming on at all.

The fact that the second LED stays on is actually normal. This what is meant to happen if neither the power supply or one type of motherboard problem have occured. Para 12 of http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908 only provides the results (no light or momentary) that occur if the test provides evidence of a problem with either of them.
As Anthony notes, if LED remains lit constantly then power is reaching the motherboard and the computer is turned on as described in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908 .
Just wanted to make this clear in case other users got worried if they found LED 2 lit.
I agree that http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908 could be made clearer in this respect.

After upgrades iMac will not completely restart.. lost please help

Hi, I am new to the forum but I have been scouring the net for an answer to my problem. I have found some similar problems but nothing exact so I decided to post to make a deadline. Please help.
Yesterday night I got one of those apple software updates. I cant remember what it was for but it was fot 3 different things nothing out of the ordinary. Once they were installed I had to restart my computer. I did this and when I did my computer booted up and froze at the blue screen after the white/grey apple screen and will go no further.
Heres where it gets a little different from other posts I have found. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse so I cannot run the start up disks or get to safe mode. I bought a different usb mouse and keyboard today and am now able to put disks in and out of the disk drive by holding down the left button during start up. The only problem the keyboard came with software that needs to be installed to make it work. So it is still impossible to connect to a keyboard. So I still cant hold shift, control or c to get to safe mode or run my mac disks.
Im not sure where to go from hear. I have a seagate external harddrive backing everything up so hopefully I didnt lose everything. Any help would be great I am lost.

When you get the new keyboard, start up from Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Reboot, then repair permissions from your hard drive.

Ipod will not do anything.. more than 1 problem please read.

Ok, so here's the deal.
My Ipod Video won't turn on, it won't restore, it won't show up anywhere on my computer.
It has a virus on it but it won't show up on Itunes so I can restore it.
I'm 100% sure the battery is charged and everything.

if you cant get anything to work on it then try calling apple, their not much help though, personally i think the people at the store i bought it from are a bigger help. my old nano did that twice and they said i needed a new one

I have a HP 6980 deskjet that I attach via usb to my macbook when I need to print. Everything has been working fine for a year now except yesterday it gives me a message "problem printing to printer, please check that the printer is chosen in the print centre......" this is not exact but pretty close. I can post the exact message later when I am at home and can check it. Does anyone have any idea what may have caused this to happen so randomly? I never did install a driver or the CD because when I plugged the printer in, it was just there automatically (which I thought was just awesome). Anyway - any help will be much appreciated
Tried to install the driver from CD and I got the message " The software to be installed requires administrator or higher level access privileges" I had the right password and have installed other software - what's up with this.
I tried to add the printer again after removing it from my list. This is the message I get when I try to add the printer - "An error occurred while trying to add the selected printer successful - ok - cnflicting attributes.
This is the error message I would receive when the printer was available before I removed it - Word cannot print due to a problem with the current printer. Make sure you have a printer selected in print centre. You may need to print again or adjust your printer settings.
I haven't had one problem in the year that I have had this printer and it is not a problem with the printer as it will work when connected to other computers. HELP PLEASE!!

NEED HELP Problem PLEASE READ!!!!

*All I did was download this album because I wanna go for a run and wanted to quick throw these songs on I downloaded well they came in M4A files so I tried puting them on my ipod 2nd gen nano using Copy Trans Manger thats my ipod manager. They didn't show up so I downloaded a converter and converted all them to mp3 files now I put them on my Manager which is on my ipod.. and they acted as if they were M4A files and didn't show up.. But i converted them to regular mp3 files they shouldv'e shown up what is the problem did it not let me replace the mp3 files with the m4a already on it could that be the problem? Help please iwanna go for a run and I want these mp3's to show up on my ipod... I forgot to say it would of said do you want to replace these files so Idk if thats what happened or not*

Zen Micro Problem, please read.

Hello, I've owned my Zen micro 5gb for around 8 months now with a few problems here and there that I could li've with , I use it mainly at work and normally I get around 6hrs battery life but I recharge at lunch, anyway, the past week my Micro will freeze every day when trying to go back to menu options or when I pause a song , it freezes up... I take the battery out , put back and reboot and it goes either to low battery and Im stuck all day with no player or it stays on the creative logo screen , I reloaded my firmware again and it still does this, Ive had to redownload my library about 20 times since Ive owned it and it really is getting annoying dealing with this.... I dont want to buy another MP3 player regardless of brand and am ready to junk this equipment, my questions are:
---is it the battery itself? it shows 3 bars but quickly goes to or none within an hour, do I buy another one already?
---if the freezing isnt due to the battery, what firmware should I use?, I use it mainy with Napster to go, if I use the latest firmware , NTG doesnt recog. my device

Possible, but very unlikely. I've yet to see any definite problem with a battery to-date.

Is the 2.20.05 firmware not working with Napster?...
If it's freezing regularly, say once a day, you ought to contact Creative. If you've reloaded the firmware and it's not solved it, then it sounds like the player's faulty.

ITunes problems (please read as can't fit in title!)

Basically since before xmas it keeps freezing, being very slow and asking me to sign in every time I go onto itunes. I'm already signed in. It also tells me there are problems with my iphone (4s) being connected (even though it is not connected) and this message flashes up around every 10-15mins after that. Also itunes if minimised on the taskbar will not maximise- there's no response at all from it. I've uninstalled, signed out, signed in, everything and it doesn't change anything.
I have windows 7 x64bit if that's relevant.
If I didn't have to have itunes for my phone I honestly wouldn't bother with it right now so help would be appreciated!

Why don't you use the kx-drivers? I'm sure they solve your problem. And they're much better than the creative drivers anyway.

Iphone 4 IOS 7 charging problem Please read, very stressed.

Hey all, my Iphone 4 is acting really worrying after the update, my phone isn't charging. If it dies completely, I can plug it in and it will charge enough just to reach about 2,3% and then it will stop completely. However the two nights ago, I left it on all night in desperate attempt to charge and it somehow made it to 40% while I was sleeping, I want to fix this very bad, it's probably the phone because I've tried 4 charging devices now and they were two offical charging cables and the other two were two docks, if I plug it in when the phone is on it says "accessory not supported" and it's really worrying, I have a lot of vital files and pictures on this phone. And if I loose them I'll be heart broken, I tried backing it up but that failed. It's still under warranty but I really do not want to replace it. Is it possible to move the memory from that phone onto another Iphone4? that'd be amazing. Other than that, can't I just buy a new docking system/battery? Or is that dreamland for me? Please help, real stressed.

Clean the dock connector with a soft, dry brush.
Does it charge properly now?
If not, take the device to Apple for evaluation.

Possible Sleep or Time Machine Problem - Please Read

I am using Leopard by the way.
I accidentally put my mac into sleep mode and after it came back on all of my hard drive space was gone. I had like 50 gigs or so before and now I it is showing around 7 gigs. I am assuming there was a swap file or such created so my question is where is it located at so I can delete.

Multiple problems, please read

i got a new PC in December and tried to manually move over all of my music files from my old PC to my new one. This for some reason did not work, so I tried importing, which did not work either. Now my iPod has half the music that was on the old PC (partial albums for some reason) and if I sync it to my new PC I will lose all of my data.
I'm so horribly disappointed now and feel like I'll lose ALL of my music....
Any advise? I'm desperate.

So i jailbroke my ipod a few years ago and right now i have 5.1, i was booting it and it usually goes fine, right now (currently) it is on a pineapple screen and will not go to my home screen/ lockscreen, i went to DFU mode and then press the power button. now all it does is stay on the black background and white apple screen. it wont ever go back to my lock screen can somebody reply to me and help me ASAP. plzzz im very desperate thank you

Although your description doesn't clarify exact use cases it feels like you need to create a map of strings and read map on user entry. Here is an example - just paste it on timeline:

Ringtone problems, please read

I'm fairly new to the whole Iphone aspect. I figured out if we bought songs from iTunes that we could make them into ringtones to put on my iPhone, but what I didn't know is that only certain songs can be edited into ringtones. So, basically my problem is that I spent money on songs that I already had on my playlist but I had to buy again because I wanted to make them into a ringtone and after I buy the song iTunes lets me know that I cannot edit or that it can no longer be edited into a ringtone. Shouldn't they have let me know before I bought it? It would have saved me money...
So how do we fix this problem? Who do I talk to so I can make the songs I bought eligible for ringtone editing for my iPhone?
Any help would be welcomed...

Actually you can tell if a song can be made into a ringtone before you buy it, it has a bell next to the price in the iTunes music store, but give them a call and maybe they will understand and refund you, give it a shot there is nothing to loose
