IMac 24"  Performance/Ram

Hi. I'm running a G5 2.0 w/2 gigs of Ram, ALS version about 11/2 yrs old and still runs great. Though totally solid and smooth in its operation, Its starting to feel a little slow now, especially since I like to use both Aperture and CS2. I also use FCE and FCP here and there for some video editing on work projects. I believe this 24" model would be a great upgrade and I would expect much snappier performance. I'm quite cognizant about the performance hit CS2 takes. But if it is an issue, I will just boot XP and use that version.
The question is, because of the cost of the 2 gig stick of ram, I was thinking of just going w/2 gigs to start. As 2 gigs has been quite adaquate for the G5, can I expect about the same on the Intel Mac? I looked at Crucial (for instance) and their 2 gig chip is significantly more than Apples which is quite rare. I suppose if I swap later to fill up the ram I can sell a gig of ram. So will 2 gigs of ram serve as well on the new iMacs as it has on the G5 with the thought that when prices drop, I will look at getting the "big" stick of ram to hit the 3 gig max. Also, my understanding is that the 3 gigs would come in handier when the OS switches to Leopard. Though then of course, we are going to want 4 gig:) In fact, the only thing I would hold out from upgrading now is that Apple will go with a different board that allows more than 3 gig in the near future. I believe the current iMac is artifically limited by choice. But then, that would be speculation as to what the future brngs and we can't have that. But, would the 2 gig work?
Thanx in advance for your answers.

You don't want any less than 2 GB right now. But don't buy third party memory, if you plan to get a new iMac. Apple charges such a competitive price that you will end up paying more by purchasing memory from a third party. It is no longer like the old days when Apple had ridiculously high prices for the extra memory that everyone knew was required.
As for 3 GB, it would be helpful for some users, not all of them. At the current time a 2 GB module is just not worth its cost, however. Even getting it directly from Apple costs several hundred dollars. If you buy it from a third party, you will end up paying nearly as much as the iMac itself. Crucial charges about $1,500 with tax and shipping for a 2 GB module. The bottom line is that everyone will have to wait a year or two for the price of 2 GB modules to come down to a reasonable price, such as $150.
If you are planning to wait for an affordable iMac that can handle 4 GB or more, then you will have a very long wait indeed. The new Core 2 Duo is much faster than your old G5. This is the perfect time to upgrade.

  • What's the best performance RAM?

I own a 15" MacBook Pro Mid 2012 and currently have 4GB of RAM. I use Adobe CS6 and want to know what's the best performance RAM to upgrade to? I am looking to go 16GB. Any information is much appreciated!

There is no such thing. All RAM spec'd to run on your hardware will perform the same. This is true of any make and any brand. Purchase from a reputable vendor. Only buy memory that is specified for your model in Apple documentation for your model. That would be:
    Built-in Memory
    8 or 16 GB PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3L on-board memory
    Maximum Memory
    16 GB
DDR3L refers to the low-voltage, 1.35 v, rated memory and not the 1.5 v rated memory.

  • Imac i7 32gb ram nvidia 680 mx for AE color grading etc?

I am considering The new Imac, 3.4GHz quad-core Core i7 Nvidia GeForce GTX 680MX with 2GB mem.
The specs seem almost exact to any i7 hackintosh or PC custom build(of the same class)... except for the Graphics card which is the MX (laptop) over the GTX (desktop model). I am trying to decide whether to have a hack built or get the imac  and I would rather have one under apple care so that I do not have to worry about tech support as opposed to a hack build.
Does anyone have any experience or info on whether this imac will perform with realtime playback doing things like high performance effects in AE or color grade in speedgrade or davinci etc. I Would like to be able to work in real time and not have tons of slow playback issues. I believe that card works with MPE just not sure how well.
I will be using mostly hdslr .h264 footage.
    Thanks in advance.

Desktop Video cards always have better performance than mobile just as CPU's. The only reason to get mobile Video is if you require a mobile editing solution. In regards to Imac's, that is one of the sacrifices you make for a OSX Desktop unit that has limited configuration and upgrade options. Imac's can handle editing that media but a PC unit will give you far better performance realtime especially with the X79 platform.

  • Can my iMac g5 2gb ram intel core 2 duo 2.16 ghz processor support OSX 10.6?

I am looking to upgrade for needs of music production. I need help to figure out if my computer iMac g5 2gb RAM and an intel core 2 duo processor 2.16ghz can handle it?

"Mutually exclusive," meaning one can't exist at the same time as the other.  If you have an Intel Mac, you don't have a G5 iMac. A G5 is PPC (Power PC) and can't install Snow Leopard.
But I'd max out the RAM. 2GB is bare bones and you won't go very far with that, especially if you're going to be running some memory consuming music production applications.

  • IMac 20", 2Gb Ram, 256Mb GPU

    Nooooo 4 days... harsh!
Just bought a new 20" iMac with 2Gb Ram and the 256Mb GPU.
Has anyone else got this configuration? How is it?
I only use native Apps so it should be sweet!
      Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I have the same exact setup...it is SWEET! I upgraded from a 17" G4 iMac (1.25Ghz/1GB RAM) WOW...what a difference. You are totally going to love this machine. Even if you do dabble with some non native apps, I have found all of them to run faster than they did on my old machine, so it is still way faster for me overall.

  • Mixing iMac/MacBook Pro RAM

Is it possible to take 1 GB of my iMac Core Duo RAM and add it to the existing 1 GB in a MacBook Pro? Basically, are the RAM modules identical? Thank you for your help.
    iMac (Intel) 2.0 2GB 256MB   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    No, they're different sizes.
I don't believe that is correct. It was true that earlier PPC-based iMac models used different RAM than their laptop counterparts, but it appears that the MBP and Intel iMac share the same motherboard design right down to the RAM slots.
It is possible that there's physically less space in the MBP and that it mandates a smaller profile, but I don't believe that's the case. Certainly the price and specifications from the online vendors I've checked are identical for the two systems.

  • For a new imac how much ram should i get?

If I buy a new iMac, I see that one can get it with 16GB or even 32GB RAM.  dMy 2007 iMac has 4 GB now after I upgraded?  What would the difference be?

    My 10 cents worth:
The minimum configurable amount of memory of a new iMac is 8Gb But...
If you are looking at a new upgradable iMac, absolute do NOT buy the Apple RAM upgrades at the time of purchase. It is grossly overpriced, and although good quality and reliable (I've been led to believe) you can buy just as good, if not better for a lot less. I wouldn't look further than OWC (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/) or Crucial (http://www.crucial.com/). Both offer matched pairs and kits that are guaranteed to work with your iMac and as you will see, cost a lot less than Apple. Don't be fooled by the price, they supply good quality, fast memory.
Secondly, in terms of how much RAM, the question is, what is your budget? I always believe that if you can afford it (and memory nowadays isn't that expensive) max out your system and then forget about it because:
    a) There's a fair chance that you'll be upgrading it again at some point if you don't max it out.
    b) You are releasing the maximum potential of your iMac (in terms of memory performance, although the jump from 16Gb to 32Gb will not be as significant as the jump from 8Gb to 16Gb))
    c) If you sell it, the extra RAM will be an attractive option for any buyer.

  • Late 2012 imac 'not enough ram' for photoshop

I have a late 2012 imac - 3.4 i7 16 gig ram and yet when using photoshop elements 9 it keeps freezing with a message saying not enough ram. Another problem which may or may not be related is MS word tending to freeze when I cut and paste??
    Any help greatfully received
    Thanks

Well, I use PSE 11 and at least in my version I would recommend, as Adobe does, that you go into Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor>Preferences>Performance>and there I would set your RAM allocation ("Memory Useage" as they call it ) to at least around 12 GB while you are using PSE.  It is heavily dependent on the amount of RAM it has available:

  • Illustrator CS6 on iMac with 2GB RAM

How will CS6 perform on my iMac with only 2GB RAM?  Minimum requirement is 2GB but I have

    Hi inmanbs,
It would be great to have a hands-on AI CS6 from http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=illustrator&loc=en_us&promoid=DJDUV and use a free trial period of 30 days.
My experience shows that it is acceptable.

  • Imac (isight) standard Ram fault.

    Hi,
My Brand new Imac (20" isight version) has gone wrong after only 2 weeks of owning it... Doh!!
I have been using it for two weeks quite a lot with no problems but on Sunday (4th December 2005) it locked up (nothing would work, not even the mouse) after 5 mins of using it. I turned it off (using the power button) and then turned it on. It then made 3 beeps and would not do anything else.
After leaving it for a bit I got it to work again but it soon crashed and I had a repeat performance of the above.
I contacted Apple (on their webchat service using my MS laptop) and they diagnosed the problem as faulty ram (the Imac is totally standard).
As you can imagine, I bought the mac under the impression that they are bomb proof and my confidence in them has been severely dampened.
I am very disappointed about how I have to get it repaired.
Firstly I have to take it to an authorised apple service dealer, (who are only open Mon-Fri 9-5, luckily I have got Friday off as a holiday), then they are going to charge me £58 just in case Apple won't pay for the warranty work (apparently has happened before) and then after they have diagnosed it, I will have to wait for them to receive the parts needed (because they are not allow to keep any in stock) and then finally I will be able to pick it up after they have fixed it and get my £58 refunded (as long as its Mon-Fri 9-5).
I think this is poor as surely they must have ram in stock to be able to repair it whilst I wait and not have to take another days holiday off (bearing in mind I haven't got any remaining for this year.. doh).???
To make life easier for myself I would quite happily replace the ram myself (at my cost) as I can get a 512mb stick for only £35, but I have read somewhere that the standard ram is not removable!!!!
Surely this can't be true..... Can it???
    Cheers
    Marc
P.S. The annoying thing is that I was going to buy my wife an ipod for Christmas but seeing that I won't have my imac back by then I obviously won't bother.

Surely what can't be true? That sometimes a part in a Mac might fail? Of course it can; if nothing in a Mac ever failed, we wouldn't need a warranty. Apple products are, in my experience, at least as reliable on average as any other computer vendor's, but there's no such thing as a "bombproof" product, no matter who the manufacturer might be. Sorry it happened to you, but sometimes things to do wrong in any product. And with an electronic product, they're more likely to go wrong when the device is new.
To make life easier for myself I would quite happily replace the ram myself (at my cost) as I can get a 512mb stick for only £35, but I have read somewhere that the standard ram is not removable!!!!
The initial 512MB of RAM is soldered onto the main logic board, so if that is indeed what has gone bad, then it requires replacing the logic board, not just switching out a RAM module. Which is why your service provider probably has to wait for the part; I doubt they stock logic boards.
Again, sorry your system had problems, but it can happen to anyone, with any product. Most Macs are very reliable, and providing you give your Mac a good home (quality mains, low static environment), it's quite probable that you'll have no further problems. Note that I'd strongly suggest erasing the hard drive and reinstalling the OS and apps; bad RAM can cause software corruption which could cause further problems down the road.
    Good luck.

  • IMAC not Performing extremely poorly

    Please Help-
I purchased two 24' iMAC machines for our office.
Installed all my software from my mirror door G4, plus new copies of CS2 Suite.
I can harldy switch from program to program, saving 100 mb files out of Photoshop takes fifteen minutes, Illustrator hardly works, safari crashes, the entire system runs extremely poorly.
I have upgraded to 2gb of ram, but only 533 Mhz, I have no extra fonts loaded. I work off a firewire - 2.0 USB external drive, so no files are on the HD. The USB is plugged into the high speed port on the back of the machine.
I have downloaded Cocktail and run scripts, restarted, verified and repaired permissions, zapped P-Ram, everything I can think- and these forums say to do - and nothing works.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Kevin

If you used migration assistant to transfer files to your new mac, that is your problem. I have read about others on here who have had the same problem. Some programs and/ or files set up for power pc and not intel are causing your slowdown. You probably are going to have to reinstall osx and import them manually. It is tedious process, but it should solve the problem. I have not had this problem personaly, but others on here have and I do believe this is the fix for it. Try doing some other searches in the forums and see if there is anything else you can do. Also, photoshop is not yet universal and still set up for power pc so it's performance is going to be less than great. I wouldn't use 533 mhz memory in your mac. The specs are supposed to be for 667mhz memory. If that is causing your slowdown I am not for certain I am no computer engineer, but it would seem that using slower memory in the system would definitely cause performance issues. You are running a risky setup using memory not designed for your computer. Good luck.

  • My imac keeps losing RAM like crazy

Very recently ive started editing on final cut pro x on my 8gb RAM i5 processor iMac. im not sure if its the programme which is causing this though. Basically, i log on and see that i have around 5gb of RAM, but then 10 mins or so later i start to notice the computer slowing down only to see the ram at 7mb!! mb not gb!!! this has been going on for a week now and is very annoying because i have to clean the RAM or shut down and both take AGES because of course i have no RAM!! Is this a software issue that can be fixed on screen or is it my actual RAM? Need help urgently. As ive been typing this for 5 mins on my iphone, my imac screen still displays 7mb of RAM. its ridiculous because even my iphone and ipad are quicker than it. its basically useless, every program takes FOREVER to open.

First, I would point out that recent versions of Mac OS X - Mavericks (Mac OS X 10.9) especially - act on the philosophy that free RAM is wasted RAM. Mac OS X will try to cache as much as it can in RAM to keep your machine running faster. You should not assume that your performance problems are caused by RAM just because free RAM is low.
Second, note that if you are using Dr. Web Light and iAntivirus, both from the App Store, those are not causing your problem. They consume nothing but a little disk space when they aren't running, and when they are running, they should be completely idle unless you initiate a scan manually. If you want to delete them (and iAntivirus, which is complete junk, should be deleted), you can simply drag them to the trash, or remove them from the Launchpad iOS-style, as with any App Store apps.
As for a solution to your problem, try my Mac Performance Guide. If none of the suggestions there help, come back here and let us know what you did and what the results were.
