IMac 24" Problems Galore . . . advice?

I just received my new IMac 24" with the Leopard disk included. While running the new machine with the pre-loaded Tiger, I noticed nothing out of the ordinary. Post-Leopard download is when the frustrations began. For instance:
1. Chimes at start up were very quiet, almost muted. The volume settings on the machine were fine but the chimes were nearly non-existent. Not a huge deal but it was the first oddity I noticed.
2. Boot-up time is ridiculously slow; I understand Leopard is "more complex" but the start up is triple in time compared to Tiger on my old IMac G5.
3. ITunes: again, start up time is off the charts. It takes over a minute to begin. Granted, I have 5800 songs and a number of movies but compared to my former set up this is about ten times slower than it should be.
4. SLEEP MODE: it will NOT wake up without a hard reset. This is the most disconcerting flaw in the machine. I know I am not alone and would be interested if anyone has overcome this glitch?
I spoke to AppleCare and I was unimpressed. I was told by the frontline guy that I would "need to replace the machine" and was elevated to the next level of service. I was put on hold for over an hour and ran out of time to sit and wait any longer. Disappointing experience with AAPL is my first and hopefully last.

That's not normal. Leopard boots in 25-30 seconds on my 2.16 GHz iMac.

Since Tiger ran without problems, it's not likely to be a hardware failure. Did the
AppleCare phone droid tell you why he thought "replace the machine" was in order?
Try clearing NVRAM and resetting the SMC. If that doesn't help, do a clean reinstall
from the Leopard DVD with the 'Erase & Install' option. It makes no sense to replace
the machine before eliminating the possibility of a software SNAFU.

  • IMac 27" Problems galore

    I'm pretty much at my wits end with my 27" i7 iMac. Its the 4th iMac I've owned and the first to have any problems. The problem list is extensive and since I am a pro user is causing me a lot of heartache and loss of work;
*constantly grumbling hard drive (known complaint I believe)
*wireless keyboard gets disconnected randomly and quite often
*some programs - most often its itunes and logic pro - won't open. The logo bounces in the dock and then nothing. The only way I can get them to work is to restart my computer - a less than satisfactory solution.
*computer randomly wakes itself up from sleep
*when waking from sleep logic pro is often crashed and needs to be force quit.
*logic frequently crashes or runs out of memory even though I have a VERY fast machine running projects that my lesser iMacs had no problems with
*sometimes the computer refuses to shut down; even if there are no programs running
I am an experienced mac user and take good care of my machines - everything is up to date and I've tried all the troubleshooting advice I've been given by apple. Apple will not replace the machine without first replacing the HD - something that will be a gross inconvenience to me and is not guaranteed to work.
Does anyone have any fixes for any of the issues above?

ah right I follow now. To do that I'll either have to buy another HD or wipe my bootcamp HD:( Neither is an appealing option though.
I have two external drives for backup: One for Time Machine, one for SuperDuper!. I wouldn't think about doing otherwise, as they complement each other functionally. Regardless of your current issue, I (and I think most folks) would strongly recommend that you do indeed get a second external backup drive, for a clone backup (either SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner). You may as well do that now, as it will then enable you to create the clone (as I said, I believe it's something that you really should have anyway) and use it to help diagnose your current problem. And if it turns out tht your internal drive is failing, it's much easier to use a clone than TM to recover everything to a new internal drive.
I got my iMac at the start of December 2009. HD is WDC WD1001FALS-40U9B0 which is identical to the HD in my last iMac (which didn't grumble or groan).
I thought perhaps it was an old platter. Guess not.
Personally, I never had much confidence in WD drives...but I know a lot of folks who simply love them. I used to think that Seagate was the only way to go. However, I've changed my opinion of Seagate of late. In fact, I don't think any of the drive manufacturers are currently building quality products: They've off-shored most of their production to second/third-rate assemblers and suppliers and, consequently, lost significant quality oversight and control. Mind you, that's simply my opinion, but if you mouse around the newsgroups and forums and read experience-based user opinions, you might arrive at a similar conclusion.

  • Imac display problem, the resolution seems to be unusual, top bar and all folders on the desktop background is off the screen

Need help with 21" imac display problem. The resolution seems to be unsual, everything on the desktop background goes off the screen. The resolution is set at 1920 x 1080

Quit the game and restart the iPad.
To quit the game - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If that doesn't work try this.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

Get a lens cleaner disc. One with brushes and try that. CDs and DVDs use different lenses, so since CDs load and play, I strongly suspect a dirty lens.

  • IMac display problems with gray to white gradients

My early 2006 iMac 20 has problems displaying gradients going from pure white to light gray. The web colors are #000000 to #EEEEEE (RGB 238 238 238 and 255 255 255)
My cheaper Acer and Fijutsu Siemens displays can handle this very well, but my iMac cuts the gradient prematurely and makes the gray darker. It looks as if the gradient on my iMac is a dark gray bar and a white bar, instead of a smooth gradient compared on the two other monitors.
I know the iMac doesn't have the best display for a designers need, but it can't be that 'cheap' or can it? I have tried to calibrate the display with both manual expert mode and using ColorSpyder. The latter gave me a blue/magenta colormode with beige gamma each time, so I gave that up.
The frustration is that I have use my iMac as secondary display and one of the other primary. It is not the optimal arrangement for an office environment.
Does anyone have the same problem or do they have any good advice for me as of what to do?

Thanks for all the speedy replies.
    Barbara:
This was reassuring news, I have been using Spyder2express with both the bundled calibration software and another professional (and high revered) software, which name is completely lost to me right now.
In both cases, with blinds shut, lights turned off and no other interference, I got a beige/dark result from both. With a bit of flicking with the settings, I managed to produce only a sick magenta result.
Your post reassures me that it can be done, so I am going to borrow the Spyder2 again and try all over, even read myself to death on the instructions once more.

  • Three replacement i7 iMacs so far. Advice?

I purchased an i7 iMac on November 27, 2009 after my 4 or 5 year old iMac G5 simply shut off one day and wouldn't turn back on. The i7's seemed really nice, so instead of repairing my G5, I figured it'd be a good excuse to make the move to Intel.
The first iMac arrived on December 11, 2009. It had an extremely grumbly hard drive that made using the computer for anything that required concentration very difficult - especially as I tend to use it most at night when it's very quiet. It didn't register with me at the time because it was very subtle, but when I would dim the screen to use the computer at night (or when it dimmed itself before sleeping), it would make a very quiet high pitched sound. There were also a few other minor annoyances like what seemed at first to be a cluster of dead pixels on the left of the screen, but after closer examination actually seemed like maybe a bit of lint behind the glass. In any case, I called Apple, mentioned just the hard drive noise that made the computer unusable for me, and was set up for a replacement.
The second iMac arrived on December 28, 2009. This computer had the same loud hard drive problem as the previous computer. The high pitched noise that I had barely noticed on the last computer when the screen was dimmed was significantly louder on this replacement. This computer also had a bunch of dead pixels in the iSight camera. I called Apple, mentioned the hard drive and screen noise, and was set up for a another replacement.
The third iMac arrived on February 4, 2010… a bit later than I had hoped. I received an email the day after this computer was scheduled to ship saying that it would be delayed for a another week or so. When it arrived, the packaging was very sloppy (for instance, the mouse - which had a scratch down the front - was basically coming out of it's protective pouch which was open and stuck to the gesture instruction booklet beneath it). This computer had the same loud hard drive problem as the previous two computers. The screen noise was even louder than the second one had been. It could be heard clearly from across a pretty large room. There were a pretty good number of dead pixels in the iSight camera with this computer as well. Also, the base of this iMac was either dented or had noticeable bumps at the front edge.
Each computer was just getting progressively worse.
I called Apple again, mentioned the hard drive and screen noise, and the dents in the base of the computer. I was cut off midway through explaining the problems. When I called back, I was told that the person that I was talking with before was going to set me up for a refund, and was asked if I would like to continue with that. I told them that I really needed this computer, and I was set up for yet another replacement.
My fourth - and current - iMac arrived on February 18, 2010. This computer was also packaged pretty messily. The hard drive is just as noisy as all of the others. The screen noise is probably closest in volume to the second one, though it seems to come and go (meaning it might be noisy at one point, be a lot quieter 10 minutes later, and be back to being really noisy 10 minutes after that). This computer also has what looks like a chip about an eight of an inch square behind the glass on the lower left of the screen.
I'm basically posting this thread for two reasons.
One is to vent. This has all been very frustrating. I've been an Mac user for many years now. I've purchased several iMac G5's for myself. I purchased an Intel iMac for my mother. I've given my father an iMac. I've bought software from Apple, AirPort Expresses, .Mac subscriptions, lots of music, movies and iPhone apps. I've purchased several iPods for myself and others. In fact, I purchased an iPod touch along with this iMac that I haven't really been able to use fully because I don't have a computer and can't access most of my media. At this rate, a newer model will come out before I ever get to use it. I stretched my budget to go with the i7 iMac because I had planned to buy Logic Studio when I could afford it, and wanted the power that it offered. I've been a very loyal Apple customer, and up until recently I've been very happy with their products and services. In fact, before my most recent iMac G5 died, it was completely silent. I have an even older iMac G5 that is still running that is almost completely silent as well. Much quieter than this new $2,300 computer. I'm pretty heavily invested in software for the Mac, and it would be very difficult to walk away from it. I really don't want to walk away from it because I love the OS… but the quality of the hardware seems to have fallen off greatly.
I guess that leads well into my second reason for posting this which is that I'm hoping to get a little advice. It's seems almost impossible that this would be the case, but after getting four noisy iMacs I'm starting to wonder if they are supposed to be like this. Has anyone gotten an iMac without a ridiculously loud hard drive or screen (or physical defects of some sort)? I'm planning on calling Apple tomorrow to try this all again, but I'm not very optimistic about my chances of getting a quality computer at this point. Am I just remarkably unlucky? Or are these problems so widespread that I'm likely to continue having trouble?
I'm not sure what direction I should actually go. Apple support has suggested a few times that I get a refund and go to my local Apple store to purchase the computer. My problem there is that 1) I purchased the iMac on Black Friday, so the refund wouldn't be enough to cover the price of the computer now, 2) my nearest Apple store is well over an hour away, and 3) my nearest Apple store doesn't carry the i7's. It feels like I'm stuck requesting replacements that also have problems, and each time I send one back I'm without a computer. I've been without a permanent computer since November. I'd really like to have the i7, but are the i5's less prone to the noise problems I've been having? If so, maybe I should just do that?
I also think that I'm not particularly good at talking with support. I don't get very far. If anyone has had similar problems, and has had a satisfactory outcome, could you fill me in on what to say to support?
Anyway, I'm really sorry that this turned out to be so long and meandering. If anyone has any advice as to what to do though, I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks everyone.

Hey... thanks for the replies everyone, and best of luck to everyone who is also having issues if you haven't gotten them sorted yet.
I ended up going for another replacement because I need this computer pretty badly. They threw in a free 4GB iPod shuffle this time, which was nice. The computer was delivered on March 8.
    The good news:
The hard drive and screen are silent. Just a tiny bit of occasional hard drive noise when the computer is very busy, but nothing like the constant noise I was having before. I had almost convinced myself, against my own better judgement, that I couldn't possibly be so unlucky and that, somehow, the noises that the previous computers were making were just normal. This computer completely validates the noise issues though. It's much quieter.
    The bad news:
    1. There are maybe 9 or so dead pixels along the bottom third of the screen. Disappointing, but not such a big deal, I suppose.
    2. There is what sounds like a louder, constant whirring fan (maybe?) noise that wasn't present with any of the other computers. It's loud enough to be obvious in comparison to the others I've had, but subtle enough to not be very annoying. Not a big deal either really, but...
    3. When I turned the computer on and started the setup process, I didn't have the option to use my wireless network like I had with the other computers. It just wasn't present at all. It took maybe 15 minutes or so of me thinking that something might be wrong with my AirPort Express before I just skipped it and moved on. After I got everything set up, I went to configure the AirPort settings myself... and there doesn't seem to be a wireless card in the computer at all. No AirPort options under 'Network' in System Preferences. My AirPort Express doesn't show up in AirPort Utility. If I open System Profiler and select 'Network', there is no AirPort listed under 'Active Services'.
So... I've just been sitting around bummed out for a few days now. It seems I'll be calling Apple again in the next day or so. I guess I'll be updating this thread again whenever that happens.
Thanks again for the replies everyone.

  • A familiar 'Illustrator CS3 on iMac G5' problem?

    Hello folks,
I should possibly post this on the Adobe forums too, but I'd like to cover the 'hardware' angle here first.
I'm a graphic designer. I've been working on a multiple-page newsletter in Illustrator CS3 (granted, I should normally use InDesign CS3, but I had to stay with Illustrator for this particular assignment). Each page is on its own layer and the entire document has character and paragraph styles applied to its type.
The problem is it's taking absolutely AGES to format any type. Any action, from applying a style to even deleting a single space takes no less than 3 to 4 seconds. You can only imagine how frustrating this is! (not to mention the amount of time I'm seeing eaten up...)
Yesterday, some layers seemed to respond faster than others, but today all were identically slow. Each page is a simple layout with just one image and one block of text - so it's not even a heavy/complicated file. I have lots of unused RAM left when working (over 1GB unused as I check on the iStat widget), so no issue there. However, I notice the fans become louder and the CPU is maxed out at about 95% usage when performing these tasks!
How can this be? Is there anything I should do to 'optimise' either the application or the system itself? I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue at present.
Does anyone recognise a pattern here from similar experience? Any advice would be most helpful.
    Thanks much.
    Steve.

Boot up from your System Install Tiger DVD & run the repair disk/permissions options.
You may also wish to do the following if your fans are still running louder than usual.

  • Imac 27'' problems and no fix???

Hi i will start by saying this will sound like a moan but trust me it needs to heard to be believed.
The last 12 months i have owned 1 refurbished Imac 24" 1 new Imac 24" and 6 imac 27'' machines.
Every one of these machines have been faulty and I have had replacements and upgrades all have been faulty. Upgrades i might add have been out of my pocket. Apple replaced same value items at no cost to me i chose to pay more on the basis that the better machines would have a better chance of being fault free. But i was very wrong.
Now Im writing this post at 6am and have a deadline for work that i can not do on my 7th new imac. I cant keep giving back my machines to the store and wait for a new machine i have lost real money every-time i send one back not to mention the faults that disable basic performance.
Here is a list of the current problems with this imac 27'' 2.8GHz Inter Core i5
DVD player can not play discs for a prolonged period of time (general error message comes up stops the program apple dvd play and vlc)
    Data DVD cannot be burned
when disks are put into the machine they become scratched and this is particularly frustrating when it is software that i can afford to replace.
When DVDs are burned they are burned corrupt you can not play the entire video on the disks, on any player.
overall performance is slow. despite free space of 700gb.
My question is what do i do next?
    Advice is much needed.

The only discs that will work are the ones that should have come with the computer. If the vendor doesn't have them, call Apple at (800) 275-2237 and ask for a set to be sent to you. Be specific as to the exact model and they will replace them for a nominal fee. If possible, go after the person /store which sold it to you and insist they give you the discs! If it was through eBay, lodge a complaint with Paypal, unless it was specifically stated that there were no discs.
Let us know what happens please,
    Miriam

  • Downgrading from Lion on Intel iMac (2008) problems

After upgrading to Lion on our iMac (2008) [Intel Core 2 Duo], which had been originally running 10.6.8, we began experiencing lots of strange problems (intermittent crashes, freezing). On Saturday, the whole computer just shutdown and couldn't be restarted.
I attempted to install a new OS from a Snow Leopard CD purchased when we upgraded from the original software (10.5.2) by first building a new partition (Mac OS Journaled, GUID) and then installing Snow Leopard, but at the very end of the process, got an error message stating the installation failed.
I then went back to the original installation disks that came with the iMac (10.5.2) and did the same process and have been able to get Leopard running. From that point, I thought I could pop the Snow Leopard install CD in and do the upgrade, but got the same error message stating the installation failed.
I'm now back to installing the original OS again (10.5.2), but am unsure how to go about getting Snow Leopard to install. Do I need to go through the software updates to get it up to 10.5.8 before installing Snow Leopard, or has Lion just done some irreparable harm to the system.
At various points during this whole process, I've sometimes been able to boot from the CD from startup by pressing C, but sometimes that fails, and I have to hold down the option key. Sometimes that even fails, and I've had to clear the memory, and restart, going through various iterations just to get the Mac to see the CD.
Any advice on how to get from Leopard to Snow Leopard would be much appreciated. Before Lion was involved, there were no problems in the upgrade process, but now that I'm trying to rebuild, it seems like things are going massively awry.
Also, it seems like the specs on Lion indicate it should be stable on this type of machine, but clearly it isn't. I've read about some incompatabilities with graphics cards (we have a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS), but I don't know if this was the problem or not. If anyone knows what could have happened with the Lion issue, I would be curious about that too.

After "successfully" installing a version of 10.5.2 onto the iMac, I ran a Verify Permissions and received a long list of Open Error 5 problems, which could not be fixed using the Disk Utility on the Mac itself, nor with a downloaded copy of DiskWarrior. Also, when verifying the hard drive, there was an invalid sibling link error, and it stopped the verification process - there was no option to repair.
I'm a little confused because I started the clean install from the Disk Utility via the installation CD by building what I thought was a "clean" partition.
Is the next step to try and run disk utility from the install CD to try and fix these errors?
I now have a copy of Disk Warrior (downloaded) sitting on another machine and my Time Machine. I'm not sure how these could be useful in the rebuild process, but if so, please let me know.
    Thanks so much,
    Marie

  • Imac internet problems

I was recently given an iMac OS X running version 10.5.8 - It's an old one from work- where it connected to the internet with no problems.
Connecting to my home wifi I'm having problems- AirPort signal displays maximum strenght, (I do get a lot of 'conection timeout & 'invalid password' messages- even though the password is correct)  When it is connected, I constantly get 'Server not found' error message when i open in both Safari & Firefox.
I have several other Mac products connected to the same wifi- which all run perfectly.
I have tried adding a new location, changing the IP address to the same as my laptop with no success.
02 (my service provider) say everything their end is running fine and i shoud contact Apple. The cover for the system has ended, so no help from Apple. IP
i have my IPv4 configure on manual
    IPv4 address - 192.169.1.73
    subnet mask 255.255.255.0
The IP address given by 02 is different from the one my laptop and the other systems in the house are using-
    they gave -  149.241.194.16
I have tried this IP and still the problem is the same.
      Any advice??

    They is who?
I would recommend carefully going over the DNS settings. It sounds like you may not be familiar with what that does or how it works. Most ISP's supply their own DNS settings and they can cause issues. I'd recommend looking over
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html
Also on the bandwidth you need to download and install iStumbler to see what channel your router is using and what channel your neighbors use. Most routers have a default of channels 5 or 6 and most users never change them. So if you live in a heavily populated area with a lot of Wi-Fi networks you can be competing for the same channels. By changing your channel to one not being used in your area then you have eliminated that possibility and possibly solving the problem.
Yes of course Apple is going charge you for telephone support, did you think it's free? If you would like free help you can go to  your local Apple Store and speak to a Genius who can help you troubleshoot the problem. If you choose that option please make an appointment, they're very busy and an appointment will speed up getting in.

  • IPod Touch & iMac G4 Problem

I am looking for an answer to a problem I have been running into. Ok, I have a iMac G4, with 1.1 USB ports. I have tried to download music, photos, calendar and I get nothing. Sometimes the iPod will start downloading than freeze. Other times I get nothing at all. I also tried downloading via firewire and that doesn't even sync the iPod. Is there anything I can do (other than buy a new computer!)
I've read in past posts it will download, but download very slow. Well, I have been unsuccessful with any sort of download. Can anyone lend some advice/help?? Thank you in advance.
    J.

yep i have to concur. I just installed Leopard on my G4 Pbook and it just about runs, the fan spends a lot of time on compared to 10.3.9.
Anyway, I only upgraded to use my Ipod Touch and like you it just doesn't work. I hoped that it was just going to be slow on the download, but I have tried all day and barely get half a dozen podcasts loaded before it just freezes.
Looks like I'm going to have to get a new mac or rely on my windows machines at work. :/

  • IMac startup problems

I have an iMac G4. It's an early flat panel model without the iSight built in. I just upgraded from 10.4.8 to .11 using the combo installer.
Now It won't startup completely, it gets to the desktop and then hangs before displaying the dock or menus. In safe mode it start up completely but 1 mouse click on anything brings up the rainbow cursor. starting in single user mode is fine and I can run fsck no problem. At this point I'd startup from the Apple Installer CD and reinstall the OS but it goes into kernel panic when I try! I tried target disk mode and ran Disk Utility from another Mac, the hard drive needed some volume header repairs but it didn't help. I'm running out of options here. Anyone? Please!

Hi, Just want to add that you are not the only one with that problem.
I've also tried everything that is recommended on the Apple support sites.
My iMac G4 (got it from a friend) ran well on Panther, but now it has the same startup issue after upgrading to Tiger. It will only run in safe mode. Without - no chance.
If one advice is to formate your HD, I did it at least four times with the same results.
Another advice given on the support site is to check the Classic part on your HD - I don't have one so that can be excluded as well.
My local Apple store spoke vaguely about some RAM problems ormotherboard issues that might occur.
I will have the machine tested next week and say what the outcome is, if not by chance someone knows the problem.
    Good Luck
    Jürgen

  • IMac printing problem with HP Photosmart 7150

I've just bought a 27 inch iMac and I'm having problems printing out of iPhoto 9. I select for eg, 4 X photos per page and it prints about 10% of the page before spitting it out. I've downloaded the latest driver for my HP Photosmart 7150 printer (Gutenprint v5.2.5) but still no good.
The print monitor window always says it is printing Page 1 7%. Weird.
    Any ideas?? Thanks in advance.
    Dan

I've got the same problem on my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard and Gutenprint 5.2.5 when printing on the 7150 - it prints about 10% (and skewed at that) and spits out the page. This occurs when printing from any app.
I am only able to print in draft mode which is not suitable for anything I need to do.
I realize this printer is no longer officially supported, but any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Mike.

  • Mid 2006 iMac Boot Problem (Since latest firmware update)

I have a Mid 2006 17" iMac. Ever since the latest firmware update in early December, about every other startup I've been having boot problems. After the white screen with the Apple Logo and the spinning wheel it goes to a blue screen like normal, but instead of the 'Loading Mac OS X' white window popping up it stays blue and the spinning loading wheel starts. I've left it loading for quite a while before and nothing changes. I have to do a force shut off by holding the power button. and then I start it up and it will boot normally.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Actually, I think it'san early 2006.
