IMac 24'/recording

i'm thinking about getting an iMac 24' with 2.8GHz intel core 2 extreme, 2GB memory, 500GB 72rpm hard drive. My question is since i use a lot of soft synths in my recordings will this machine handle it well enough? Does anyone use the IMac 24' with logic and have u had any problems? Just trying to do a little research before I buy. some of the particular soft synths i use are sample logic elements, spectrasonics atmosphere, sonik synth etc. thanks for any responses and input.

You might want to ask on the Logic discussion page. I'm about to get a similar machine-I ordered 24" 2.8GHz 500GB 1GB RAM (so I can upgrade it to 4GB using Crucial RAM). I guess it depends just how many soft synths you're going to be using simultaneously, but you can always freeze some. And a guy in Sound on Sound magazine a month ago had just got this model of iMac and got amazing numbers of tracks (don't have the magazine with me) so the internal HD should be fine I would say. I'm going to work from the internal drive, then back up to an external firewire drive.

    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

If its's an Electric Acoustic as you said (it takes a battery), then it SHOULD work plugged directly in. If it does not take a battery than, yes, you need an audio interface:

If your budget supports it, a decent interface with a decent mic, as CD pointed out, will likely sound much better. --Hang

    You could try iMic:

I've been using it for years. You will also need an audio app that will allow recording - I use Sound Studio, but check the app store for others.

  • What Could Make My iMac Stutter As It Records?

Until recently my iMac would record flawlessly when recording via the iSight camera or when importing from my DV camera, but now it stutters and stops? I have tried other programs on the web like Vidi and it's the same problem.
I am now suspecting a computer hardware problem. What could the problem be and how easy would it be to fix?
I am using a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

    Hello, Robert.
It may be better to post you're questions in the iMovie 6 (or '08) Discussions pages as opposed to the more general Snow Leopard side of these Discussions.
That said, I would run the "Hardware" tests found on the Snow Leopard DVD to try and rule some things out.
Have you tested the external camera using a different Firewire cable?
Does the camera have "external" power supply attached?
What software are you using to record the built in iSight camera?

  • Optimizing an iMac for Audio Recording

Is here documentation anywhere on how to set up an iMac for recording? Like, what apps to delete or add, preferences, etc.?

Cons are pretty much always the same with any major upgrade and Logic -
What plugins will it break? In my experience for this release, not many. In fact going from Tiger to Leopard was probably one of the least painful OS transitions I've made.
But Leopard had some MASSIVE improvements over Tiger that I use all the time now. Time Machine, Spaces. When I go back to Tiger, I end up missing those.
What I do is keep a developmental drive with similar software loaded. Before upgrading any major OS revision, I test it out first before screwing up my real studio environment... Plus it keeps a working backup drive for you.

  • How to do simple video capture on my iMac?

This seemed like the best place to ask about this.
Basically, I want to use my iMac to record videos from my Xbox 360. I just want to make short clips every now and then that I can post on youtube. I was looking at some devices such Elgato's EyeTV at the Apple store. However, it can do so many things I do not need, but all those extras make it $150.
I saw the mini DVI to S Video adapter but those only allow you to use your TV as a monitory right? Those are only $19 bucks because they do a very specific job. Is there a device or cable that will allow whatever is on my TV to be projected on my iMac so I can record it? I dont need all the extras that the EyeTV does.

If you don't have a digital video camera you can record with before transferring into the iMac, you will need to buy something like EyeTV Hybrid. Your iMac doesn't have a video input, only output. EyeTV Hybrid in an inexpensive route to owning one.
    Karn.

  • How can I record a Midi download to itunes

I have a spider jam amp that allows for jam and midi songs to be recorded onto a SD card and then used as a play along with the AMP.
I Downloaded several and own a few on sheet music included CD's and put them into iTunes and created a wav file transfered to a SD card and they work and play fine in the AMP.
Unfortunately and not realizing, I purchased a bunch from Guitar Instructor.com and there is not way I can get them transferred into iTunes or the Toast 8 program I have.
I am not interested in high quality for recording I just want to be able to play along for improvement.
Is there a way thru GarageBand that I can record thru the speakers or from the speakers back into GB ?
I know there is a built in mike and am hoping something like that will work.
    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hi:
Sorry it I mislead you with saying MIDI files.
They are not downloaded onto my computer.
I have to access the song via the internet.
it is a digital library account that is set up for the songs I purchased.
I click on a "play now" button (next to each song I purchased) and it plays.
I cannot drag and drop anything from the list.
That is why I am trying to find out how to record from the speakers while the song is playing.
the sound may not be the best quality but it is usable.
I somehow remember years ago when GB came out I thought you could record into GB via a computer microphone.
I hope I made myself a little clearer.
IOW's : Can the sound playing from the built in computer speakers of the iMAC be recorded back into GB.
Thanks, if I am still not explaining it right hopefully some additional questions can be asked and I can answer them.

  • Another iMac Randomly Shutting Down!!

Hey Everyone. I'm new to the forums, though i've always used them as a resource over the years to learn more or troubleshoot issues. Hopefully, now, someone can help me with mine personally.. :-/
I have an intel 2.8gH Aluminum iMac that I purchased fall of 2007. Only now, almost 2 years later is it suddenly (just started yesterday) turning off randomly. Everytime it will not allow me to turn it back on until a minute or so has passed. I have reset the SMC as well as the PRAM several times. This afternoon, it is now to the point where I cannot even keep it running long enough to download an app to up the fan speeds. Although, I don't think it is overheating in the first place.
I'm really hoping it is just the power supply, as I've seen that be the fix for SOME iMacs i've found at other online forums. Though, the upper corner of my iMac is not hot or smelling burnt out at all. I have found more than several online forums of people complaining about their iMacs randomly shutting down, and am praying it is not the logic board, as that is a $900+ fix.
please, someone give me insight to how i can check if its the power supply or something else? I use this iMac for recording all of my music, editing video, and (of course) playing WoW lol. Currently using my 1st gen macbook.

I bought my iMac 20" in May 2006. I had been very impressed with it until one day I shut it down to move it to another room. I could not get it to turn back on. I had to leave it unplugged for a few hours. Since then it has started randomly shutting itself down, turning itself off and not starting up again until I unplug and leave it unplugged for a few hours. I had purchased the Apple Care? Extended Warranty, and the fault occurred during this three year period, though I failed to take the fault seriously and did not phone during the period. It was just after the three year warranty that I phoned Apple Care? about it and everyone I spoke to said they had not heard of this problem occurring. I wonder now, why the Apple Customer Service Team don't visit the discussions.apple.com where they will find quite a significant number of like problems occurring with the iMac sold in 2006.
My reason for paying the nearly triple price point for an Apple Computer was the quality of the build and my expectation that I would get far longer life out of my purchase. I don't like buying throw away products and I gladly save and wait longer to buy better quality products. Just as an example and point of reference. In 2000 I purchased a second hand Dell with 8GB HDD and 256Mb RAM. I paid $1000 for it and I gave it to my father when I got this iMac and he still has it running today. It has not had a single hardware issue in nine years. Good luck I suppose. However, after spending around $3000 on this iMac, and Apple now telling me the Logic Board is generically, non specifically 'failing', it goes against my pure desire for non disposable, throw away products to buy another Logic Board for AUS $1064. For one, I don't believe it has given me anywhere near the life that I expected from a product with such a high price point and solid reputation for quality, nor do I feel confidence in buying anything more 'Apple' after the dealings I have had with them over this problem. I am amazed that Apple would sell a 'failing' Computer to their customers and then expect that the customer will spend more money, considerably more, on a product that may be equally faulty and that they will not stand behind either.

  • Help - trying to record

I am a complete Newbie to Mac and GarageBand. I want to take audio from a portable recording device, via an XLR cable from this device to a 1/8-inch jack into the back of my iMac, and record it into GarageBand. However, I can't seem to shut off the built-in mic in the iMac, because the recording is picking up ambient noise.
How do I switch the mic to the 1/8-inch input jack in the back of the iMac? (I've created a new track, turned off the metronome and activated the record buttons -- but I still get noise from some mic that is in the iMac rather than getting only the sound track from the portable recording device)

    Sounds like it, yeah.
assuming that device is meant to connect to a missing console via XLR runs, it would be typically plugged into a mic bus, which is expecting a weak signal (your mac is not: http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/GBFAQ.html#micline )
you might be able to jury rig things if you can jack into a stereo system and take teh stereo system's line-out to connect to your mac.

  • Imac as center of hard disk / music system / television

With lots of music on an external hard disk (LaCie 2TB with firewire 800 and USB3), a music system (Exposure amplifier with AUX IN), and a television (Samsung, HDMI/DVI IN), I would like to connect everything to my iMac from 2010 (USB2 or firewire 800), by cable or wifi - how do I connect, which cables do I need, and do I need to buy any hardware? - I want to hear the music from my hard disk via the iMac (or directly if possible) on the audio system (and, if possible, to record music on the iMac from records); and I want to see/hear whatever is on the iMac (like films, photos, live tv by internet etc.) on my tv set.
Yes, a bit complicated, but I think this is what many people would like.

You need to have some "computer" involved to interact between your hard drive and your TV and your sound system. From your post, it sounds like you want to do a lot of things. And in order to do a lot of those things correctly you need to have something that is diverse enough and powerful enough to handle those things.
I use the Mac Mini for this. Its a small computer, but has no screen, keyboard, or mouse. Basically its a toaster sized box that can do everything that you'd want. Look into a Mac Mini to run your media server. Mine is hooked up to my TV and sound system. I then have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse to control it or I can control it with my iMac using screen sharing.

  • IMac starts up by itself

my Intel iMac starts up by itself for no apparent reason after it was shut down
using the shut-down command in the Apply drop-down menu. When I come
back some time later I find it is running and I shut it down again - only to find it running again when I return to the room the next time. This does not happen
when I shut it down using the power button on the back.
I have already done a SMC reset and have thrown out some plist preference
lists (as Apple recommended) It has made no difference.
It would be quite simple to always use the power button to shut it down - but
then I find that Elgatos EyeTV will not start the computor when a program is
scheduled for recording. Yes I have checked the Energy Saver to make sure it
is not set for automatic turn-on.
Yes I have also checked EyeTV to make sure that nothing is scheduled for
    recording.
I am just over the 90day free Apple phone support and they now want payment for further help.
    Looking for some good suggestions,
    Walter

iMac (Intel core duo)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Denis and everyone else,
on Saturday I completely de-installed the EyeTV software and pulled all cables out after shutting the iMac down with the Apple pull-down shut-down comand.
It made no difference, the iMac turned itself back on.
On Sunday I followed your suggestion Denis and looked at the Energy Saver.
The "RESTART AUTOMATICALLY AFTER ...." was always unchecked. The
"ALLOW POWER BUTTON TO SLEEP . . . " function was checked and I unchecked it.
From then on the iMac no longer turned itself on (using the shut-down comand) - except when a program was scheduled to be recorded in EyeTV
the computer is still turned on at other times before the scheduled time.
This Monday morning I followed iMac973s suggestion and deleted the Wakein
file also, only to find that EyeTV was no longer able to start the iMac to record
a scheduled program - it missed the start time and I started the computer myself. EyeTV refused to open, it asked for the admin/authorization to install
something - which was the Wakein file . This file is back where it was before
and I believe EyeTV can't operate without it (maybe iMac973 can confirm this)
(Wakein file is an exe file. I always thought that such exe files only exist in Windows Oper/systems.)
    To summarize,
a part solution for me is to have the Energy Saver set as you suggested Denis
and then the iMac won't turn itself on any more. The task of recording TV programs would have to given back to the old video recorder which means that taped programs have to be watched on an old CRT televion set (no fun).
I am more happy today but still confused,
    best regards
    Walter

  • The iMac / Mac Mini Equation

I would be very interested in your thoughts on my situation.
I have a 2007 2.33Ghz iMac and have never gotten over the novelty of using OSX Tiger (yes!) since I switched after my Windows PC died.  However I think it is now time for an upgrade.
I am a guitar tutor and currently use my iMac for recording Audio with Garage Band. I would like to start using Logic Pro and am also interested in creating some guitar tuition videos so I would like to able to run Final Cut ProX too.
My computer hardware budget is around £1500 (I'm from UK).
I am very tempted by the 2.6 i7 Mac mini with the SSD (£1,115)  I would also add 16GB of Crucial RAM. (£60). I have my eye on a nice £360  27" inch monitor (DGM IPS 2701 WPH)  which I understand has the same panel as the Apple Thunderbolt display.  Here is review of the monitor:  http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dgm_ips-2701wph.htm
My other option is a 2.9Ghz i5 21.5 inch iMac with Fusion Drive and Apple supplied 16GB of Ram.  This is about £100 more expensive than the mini option but I could just about stretch to it.
So here is the equation - For my needs does the i7 of the mini trump the faster (in Ghz terms) i5 of the iMac?  If it does would the discrete graphics card redress the balance?
I need the machine to be quiet and as both machines have only one fan I would guess they would be evenly matched here?  I also have to consider the pros and cons of the displays (and then there's the mini's screen flickering issue which is causing me some concern).
So is it iMac > Mac mini or Mac mini > iMac?
    Thanks for your thoughts.

Honestly... I wouln't consider the new iMacs at all, nice & fast, but basically disposable models now, & the Minis have many reported problems if you plan on using the HDMI port. :(
I think myself, I'd look for a Refurb 2011 iMac of good speed.
