IMac 24 with Nvidia 7600...bad video card choice?

Hi folks. I've had my iMac 24 incher for a few days now and I went to try one of my favorite game demos, Unreal Tournament 2004 and the performance I got from the video was a lot less than what I thought it would be. I have the game for my Windows machine which is a 3Ghz P4, 2GB RAM, GeForce 6600GT and the performance on that seems way better than my iMac. Why? I thought the video card it in was suppose to be pretty good (GeForce 7600GT 256mb). I changed the settings in UT to the native res of the mac but it didnt' help. Anything I can do about this? Thanks.

He said that he was running the demo. I don't
think
this has been updated to universal binary.
It has been updated. Do a search on versiontracker.
Do you mean this?
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22450
Versiontracker screwed up again. This is a patch that updates the retail release of UT 2004 for Mac to version 3369.2. It isn't the demo. The demo weighs in at nearly 600 MB. If you have a link to a download of an actual UB demo of UT 2004, please feel free to share.

  • P7N Diamond and TWO nVidia 9800 GX2 Video Cards

Hello all, I have a simple question.  I’ve searched Google and this is one of the few places I’ve found people even discussing the subject of a MSI P7N Diamond motherboard and TWO nVidia 9800 GX2 video cards running SLi.
Here is my system.  MSI P7N Diamond, 6 GB OCZ Reaper Memory, Pentium E8500 processor, Asus Silent Knight cooler, two eVGA 8800 GT Superclocked Edition video cards running SLi, Tagan BZ Series 800 W power supply, four 500 GB Seagate Barracuda hard drives running RAID 0 (2 for the C drive & 2 for the D drive), Sound Blaster PCIe sound (came with MB), LG Blu-ray, DVD, CD burner & HD-DVD Reader, second LG DVD/CD burner, GL W2452T monitor and Windows Ultimate Edition 64-bit.
My question is, can I replace the two 8800 GT SC video cards with TWO 9800 GX2 video cards?  I know the P7N Diamond can handle Tri-SLi, but can it handle two cards with 2 GPU’s each.  I am also considering changing up my two 1 GB Reaper chips with 2 GB chips so I will have 8 GB of RAM.  This should make up for the 2 GB of memory the 9800 GX2’s are using up (if, in fact the motherboard can handle the cards).
I was also wondering, if the motherboard CAN handle dual 9800 GX2’s, can my power supply handle it at 800 watts?
And for my bonus question, would I be better off considering going with two 9800 GTX+ cards rather than the GX2's?  Would I honestly se a huge improvement running two GX2's as opposed to two GTX+ cards?  After all, the 9800 GTX+ cards would be much cheaper!
Thanks in advance for any help!!!
    GH

Thanks for all the help BossKiller!!!  You’ve been a HUGE help!
RemusM, I have two answers for you…
From the sensible side that should be thinking this through, no.  You are absolutely 100% correct, I probably don’t need to run two 9800 GX2 cards.  I can play the games I’m currently playing quite well on two 8800 GT OC cards.  I should save my money.
And, from the geek side I say heck yes!  This will ensure I can run pretty much everything out there and anything made in the near and not so distant future with all settings maxed out!
That said, I wish I would listen to RemusM and my sensible side… but alas it’s a losing battle.  Plus, I may be getting the two 9800 GX2’s for $300 ($150 each) .  So it’s not that bad.  If I have to pay full price for them, the geek side may lose out anyhow.
    GH
Oh and by the way RemusM, I LOVE the sig block!!  That’s an old Timex isn’t it?  It’s not the Sinclair 1000 is it?

Hello, I have a Mac computer with NVIDIA 750M dedicated graphics card and monitor EIZO but the problem was there when I was working with Windows and Acer monitor. When I open a file from Camera Raw in PS this is smaller than the screen so I double-click with the tool "hand" to fit on the screen, but the picture loses sharpness and becomes blurry. If you magnify the image even only slightly with the tool "zoom" the picture comes back clear. In Camera Raw instead is always sharp. I solve the problem by turning off the graphics card in PS but often use plugin that need the graphics card otherwise the processing time is much longer. I ask for help.
    Thanks.

Got my 1st Mac!  I have an iMac with Nvidia GT640M.  What great native OSX FPS or MMO games will run well on it, if any?
I'm an Android developer and got my iMac primarily for coding at home as well as general home computing (after being issued a macbook air at work and falling in love with OSX).  I was a huge Windows gamer  in the past but not in years.  I switched from Windows to Linux a few years ago (when I transitioned my career from Windows development to Android).  So gaming wasn't a big consideration in fact I didn't want anything too great for gaming so that I don't get sucked into gaming 24x7.  However if I can enjoy a game or two on my iMac that would be cool.
I want a native Mac game and I want it to run well (not just barely on the lowest settings) or I would not bother.  Will anything run great on my iMac or at least very good?

It's the same Deus Ex franchise.
If you want multyplayer games, again see App store where you will find Call of duty, Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty Black ops, and Modern Combat.
You can also search online for Mac compatible games.

  • IMAC 24Inch with NVidia 256 MB graphics card CRASHED NO SCREEN STARTUP HELP

HI there, wondering if anyone has had their nvidia GT graphics card crash then the screen go black?
I got home tonight, my ali imac 24inch, looks like its off, I turn it on, everything boots up but no
screen. Ive shared the screen through my macbook and look at the system info and it says under graphics displays "No information found" What does this mean? Has my graphics card destroyed itself?
    It better not have! HELP!!!

Actually you may find that you have more success with an AMD\ATI Radeon video card.
I have experienced that with some motherboards, specifically Pegatron motherboards.
The problem is that you are delving into the DIY gaming PC realm and  trying to do it with a prebuilt desktop PC.
Upgrading a prebuilt PC does not always result in a success story. Don't even consider trying to install cutting edge gaming memory modules. That will be a definite disappointment for you.
You may get lucky with an AMD Radeon HD video card.
But...You might just run into the same frustrating scenario you are facing today. I wish I had better news to give you.

  • 24" iMac--latest models. Which video card option to choose?

I am going to buy a new iMac 24" with 4 GB RAM. There is a $300 difference between two of the models, based mainly, so far as I can tell, on a processor speed difference of 2.6 to 2.9 Ghz, but mainly on the video card.
The lower priced iMac has a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
The higher priced iMac has NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
I use my current iMac (mid-2007 version, 4 GB, Radeon 2600 HD with 256 MB VRAM) for all the usual things like email, word processing and web surfing, but also for watching movies, high def streamed TV, including sports events. I do not do video editing nor do I play games on the computer. I am using approx 1 GB of RAM all the time for Fusion to run Windows, since I have a couple of programs that have no Mac equivalent.
Am I losing 256 MB of system RAM with the GeForce 9400M since it doesn't have its own memory like the Radeon 2600 HD, and will I miss the memory? Is the GeForce still a better video card than the Radeon, even with the shared memory?
The only real question is, should I spend the extra $300 to get the video card with its own memory, assuming I don't need the faster processor speed?

I see from your new thread today that you have not yet made this purchase.
To get the upgraded hardware you really want, and for only $50 (not $300) above the cost you're willing to pay for the new 2.66, you can buy the refurbished 2.93 current 4GB RAM model direct from Apple, and it will have exact same warranty (and be treated by Apple) as a new one.
While it is not in today's list of refurbs at the online Store, it was there Monday - simply call now and they will put you on the waiting list for a refurbed MB419LL/A @ $1,549 w/ free shipping, and you will have it in a week or two. Just a few days extra wait for the model of your dreams, and yes it will come with Snow Leopard:D

  • Can I attach an external monitor to my iMac G5 (ALS) if the video card is dead?

I don't know for a fact that the video card is dead, but the screen on my iMac (PPC/ALS) 20" gradually started flaking out over several months and is now dead. Computer boots up fine and I'm looking at it through target mode right now.  I want to keep using the computer if I can, so I am wondering if I can attach an external monitor through the DVI slot even if the video card is kaput.  I'd like to get an opinion or two on this before I buy a used monitor and cable.  Thanks!

You have found the answer. If the video chipset is OK but there is a fault in the internal display or its cabing, an external monitor will work. However, if the video chipset--which is farther "upstream" in the system--goes bad, the option of an external monitor is off the table.

  • NVIDIA GeForce GT650M video card and CS6 Premier Pro

How can I get CS6 Premier Pro to recognize my video card; NVIDIA GeForce GT650M? Or can it be used at all with CS6 Premier Pro?

Yes, your NVIDIA GeForce GT650M should be suported.
features added or changed in this update
    Windows 8 certification
updates for HiDPI display, which improves appearance on computers that use Retina Display, such as MacBook Pro computers
added GPUs to the list of those that Premiere Pro CS6 will use for GPU processing: GT 650M (which is in the newer MacBook Pro computers) and GTX 680Note: Premiere Pro can use either OpenCL or CUDA for GPU processing on the GT 650M. The default is to use OpenCL. You can change this in the General project settings. For details of GPU acceleration in Premiere Pro, see this page. • Compositing causes screen tearing with Nvidia, is ATI a better choice?

So far, every Nvidia card I've used with Ubuntu, Debian and Arch has had intolerable screen tearing with a compositing manager running, while watching any video. I've installed the proprietary driver from Nvidia on a Debian machine but the screen tearing is still there. The cards I've been using are an 8600GT and a 9600GT.
I've tried xcompmgr, Xfce compositing and Gnome compositing all of which seem to cause the same symptoms.
It seems like I read somewhere that there's a problem with the Nvidia compositing extension or something like that...
    Two questions...
    1) Do ATI cards tear video with compositing enabled? (I'm hoping they don't...)
    2) Is there any way to cure screen tearing with an nvidia card and compositing enabled?

ATI Radeon 4670 user here, KDE w/ Arch Linux. While I can't speak for other video cards, this particular card runs absolutely fine using xf86-video-ati and some xorg.conf tweaks. Though I don't play many games, I can tell you Alice runs fine via WINE. As far as OpenGL goes, the screen savers that are supposedly OpenGL work fine, too.
The only performance difference between this card and the 7600GS I was using beforehand that I can tell (minus the speed improvement) is being forced to view videos using the Xvideo driver in KMPlayer. If I view said videos via OpenGL, they display, however widgets on the desktop tend to offer display glitches while the video is ongoing.
I understand there's a good deal of reason for the commenting, and yes, ATI drivers aren't nearly up to par with their Nvidia counterparts, however this doesn't mean some folks aren't having success with the available driver(s) using little effort on their parts. As an ATI user, it'd be nice to see some fellow reports of success with ATI drivers, open source or not.

  • Bad video card ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 2008 early macpro?

I get the green squiggles on the screen when i connect the right hand side dvi port to a monitor. left side is fine. currently only using one dvi port port, but i am looking to upgrade to a apple 30" with the dual-dvi connection for maximum resolution.
does this indicate a possible failure of the video card?
I've only heard good things about this video card, how can i tell for certain?
might'n it be time to put in a newer video card that'd run the 27" Apple LED if that were the case?

After 4 years, my 2008 Mac Pro just experienced a grey screen, then black screen failure with the ATI 2600XT graphics card ... the usual troubleshooting methods pointed to a hardware problem.
Using the info on TS3630 from the link above, I determined the card's serial number was among those affected. I went to the Apple store this weekend, and they swapped the bad card for a good replacement at no cost to me. So, as of Sept. 2012, they are still honoring the replacement program.
Be sure to bring a copy of the tech doc + all your pertinent system info (the store was not aware of the program until I showed them the document). Also, do check in advance whether they have the replacement in stock ... I was lucky that my local store did, otherwise, they have to order and you'll need top make a return trip as they will not ship the replacement card to you.
kudos to Apple for handling this so well after all this time!

  • New Member / Video Card Choice Question

New CS4 Production Premium User Here.
I am building a computer system specifically for Video Editing and production for use with Premier CS4 & Sony Vegas.. Have been doing my usual amount of Over Research here and other places but have a series of issues I am having a little trouble coming to grips with.
I have been into computer editing game for a long time but strictly in the Audio Recording /Mixing area /..
Video is a new interest which has me hooked / Im also a Gear Junkie so I have to watch it. 
I will probably be back with a couple more topics but to keep this thread simple /
My first post question is the topic of Video cards: Adobes Hardware compatibility list seems a little out dated. ?
The system does not have to be an ultimate gaming rig as I am not into that / just SD & HD Video editing & 3d effects.. I need a card which will do what is needed / works well with Premier CS4 / Is not too loud fan wise / can run 24/5 and not overheat.
    I also will need the ability to monitor on a HD TV with a good sound monitoring system / Midas / Bryston / Dynaudio etc;
I was considering either of the following / from lowest price to highest.
    ASUS GeForce 9600GT Silent 650MHZ 512MB 1.8GHZ DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDCP HDTV Out
    ASUS GeForce 9800GT Matrix 612MHZ 512MB 1.8GHZ DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDCP HDTV Out
    ASUS GeForce 9800GTX+ Dk 740MHZ 512MB 2.3GHZ DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDCP HDTV Out
    Questions:
    Is a 512mb card sufficient?
Will all of the above do what is needed for my purpose?
What about noise of heat issues.
My system could be running close to 24/5 at times.
Have not made a final decision on all components but will probably basically start of like this.
    Vista 64 Bit/OS
    Core I7 940
Asus Rampage 2 Extreme or a plain P6T
Antec 1200 Case / For now I will leave out the hard drives and other things on my list.
My builder suggests to stick with ASUS Video Cards because he has the fastest warranty replacement service on his end for ASUS products / plus I am a total ASUS Motherboard guy with years satisfied experiences.. (in Audio setups).
Any feedback or comments on the above will be appreciated.
    Thanks / Orion

    Thanks Members for the Feedback:
I am trying to stick just to the Video Card Issues so the topic does not get all over the map / Raid issues have already been researched & I might have a question about that later in another thread.
Witha the video card issue I am just trying to see if I can get a reply which the majority of users agree upon / not an easy task & that is were my confused state of topic started.
    b Keith
It seems what you have said about QUADRO cards is the most agreed upon overall from my last three months of research at various locations / The cost is extreme for these cards & I was just trying to determime if I realy needed to go that far : >$2,000.00 and up.
    just for the Graphics card..
Perhaps I should start of with one of the cards I first mentioned which are dirt cheep compared to the Quadro series and replace it when I have arrived at the point where my shills are beyond my hardware limitations.
    b Charles & Jim.
Thanks for the reference to the . >ASUS GeForce 9800GTX+ Dk 740MHZ 512MB 2.3GHZ DDR3< I was thinking this might be the best to start with / except for the reported could be problems of / Noise / card size and Heat issues if running 24/5?
Other issues you have stated also seem to be agreed upon from mny sources as well / which is why I am considering perhaps not going Raid "o" from the start / perhaps Raid 5.. / or No Raid until I see If realy need it for my own personal use level.
b conclusion to this point in the game:
Looks like If I do a top notch system following all the higher end recomendations it will cost me over $10,000.00 (if I include a capture card / raid card (Areca 1220 or 1240(don't want to get into that topic just yet)& all the extras... This is about double the investment I had planned as this is basically a serious hobby not a business venture. Plus we have not included another $6,000.00 for a half decent peosumer HD camera with a few extras. I was trying to keep the entire setup to 8 to 10 grand total.. Not including the software / so this looks like wishfull thinking at best / Ho Ho.
b remember / unfortunately my pricing reflects Canadian $$ which includes a 25% hike in pricing because our government wants the loonie (Good Name) low valued so businesses can export our products at built in 25% Sale Pricing.
Perhaps,we wont get into that topic/please, but I just couldn't resist / when I start thinking about government issues (anywhere in this world) I tend to go off the deep end as part of why I am going into this video thing is to document the destruction of our environment & the entire democratic process, which is a total farce in my neck of the woods. Nuff Said..
Again Thanks for the input and I will keep watching and perhaps cover another topic later / my goal is to place an order for a build within the next 10 days of so.

  • Help with running OS X 10.5 with a GMA X3100 video card

I am trying to boot Mac OS X 10.5 on my iPod. I kept booting, and every time it came up with a kernel panic. I ran it in Verbose mode, and it said that the video card was not supported. The updaters said that my iPod didn't meet the requirements, which I think that Leopard needs to be succsessfully booted to be able to update. I need help booting into Leopard so I can do some things.

I have been able to run Cheetah and Tiger on it. Also, the partition is Mac OS Extended (Jounaled) and the disk has the GUID Partition Table. The iPod is a 2nd gen "Touch Wheel" iPod, 20 GB. The HD on my MacBook is just about full, so what other way can I use Leopard without using an external drive?

  • Z77A-GD65 issues with Geforce GTX 780 Video Card

    Hey Guys,
I have a issue with a new PC build.
I think it may be a driver or BIOS setting issue, I hope
I bought a MSI Z77A-GD65 motherboard and below are the specs:
    - Intel Core i7-2600 CPU 3.4 Ghz
    - BIOS Version E4451IMS V10.8
    - Balistix Sport 8GB sticks (Total of 24 GB memory installed)
    - Kentek 875w power supply
    - Geforce GTX 780 Graphics Card
My problem is with the Geforce GTX 780 video card, I installed a fresh install of Windows 7 64 bit and
everything runs and works fine, but when i install the Geforce GTX 780 video card and install the
drivers its all good up to this point but when i restart the computer i get this message in the device
manager ""Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (code 43)"
I have installed different versions of the driver, a few older and few newer versions with the same
    outcome.
I tried to flash the BIOS to the latest version 10.11 but had problems with it picking up my harddrive
after it flashed successfully. I even checked the boot up setting and it all looked good just would not
boot up, so i had to revert back to the v10.8 BIOS version for it to work.
I'm not sure if there is a setting in the BIOS that i need to turn on or off. I'm not familar with this BIOS,
is there a place in it so i can see if the BIOS is picking up the video card, it has to or Windows would
    not see it right?
I'm stumped here, do you guys know of a Geforce driver version that works well with this video card?
I truely think the card is fine because when i install the card to the motherboard i dont get any weird
issues until the driver is installed and Windows is restarted.
I would greatly appreciate any help and advise that you guys can give me.
    Thanks alot

    UPDATE
Well i wanted to post an update on my new build issue.
    Here are my specs:
    I bought a MSI Z77A-GD65 motherboard with BIOS v10.8
    - Intel Core i7-2600 CPU 3.4 Ghz
    - BIOS Version E4451IMS V10.8 (i had a issue with the newest BIOS flash v10.11 it wouldn't detect the harddrive, could figure that one out so i went back to v10.8)
    - Balistix Sport 8GB sticks (Total of 32 GB memory installed) I first had 3 sticks so i got another 8GB stick to fill all 4 banks for total of 32 GB
    - Corsair Professional Series 860 Watt Digital ATX/EPS Modular 80 PLUS Platinum Power Supply AX860i (Bought this PS to replace the Kentek PS)
    - N780 TF 3GD5/OC (GeForce GTX 780 GAMING) (traded Geforce GTX 780 card for the MSI version of the GTX 780 card)
OK... I got the new Corsair 860w power supply installed and i installed the new MSI GTX 780 video card with the specs above everything installed fine no problems and my son was playing the Bio Shock Infinite game on Steam and about 1 hour into the game he got a blue screen of death, says something like "to prevent damage windows is now resetting" and it turns off so fast can't read the rest of the message.
I'm going to here in a little bit and update all device drivers with MSI Live update utility and also update the motherboard BIOS again to v10.11.
I'm really confused here, I'm also going to take out some memory and try to run it with sticks only in slot 2 & 4 to see if it runs more stable like that, also should i update the video card to the latest driver, i know the latest is not always the greatest driver.
I want to think you guys again for your help & time with this issue. I really dont know what else to do here, everything is new in this PC.
    Thanks

  • How to maintain audio continuity with segments of bad video

Anyone have any editing tricks for keeping good audio footage when there are interspersed segments of poor quality video? For example, I have 10 min of contiguous audio that I don't want to disrupt. Halfway through, however, I moved to camera to a different perspective and the time during the movement is nauseating footage of the floor. Obviously the pros using multiple cameras could simply splice in footage from another camera for the time period during which the main camera had bad video footage. I'm only using one camera, however. Any tricks for keeping the audio intact, but 'hiding' segments of bad video? fade in and out of a photograph/still image? maybe I need a good reference for video editing. thanks in advance for any/all thoughts.

Always shoot a bit of 'spare' footage at the beginning, and whenever there's an opportunity (..I know this is being wise after the event, but it may be of help for next time..) ..e.g; if it's a wedding, shoot guests arriving, or people sitting attentively, or bits of the building (..stained glass windows, etc..) ..or if it's a theatre or a play, ditto ..so you've got relevant, related bits which you can drop in during camera moves.
As Karsten and Beverly say, by using "Paste Over at Playhead" to insert extra material on top of the audio, you automatically keep the sync between picture and sound, because iMovie removes exactly the same length of original video as the length which you're "pasting in" to replace the bad footage ..thus keeping sync.
If you don't have "..a photograph/still image.." to drop in, you could always create a still from some of your video footage (put the Playhead where you want it, then use ShiftApple'S' to Create Still Frame), maybe soften it or crop it a bit so that it doesn't look exactly like a frame from the video, then do another couple of similar stills, dissolve between them, and then use that set of stills/dissolves to replace your bad footage.*
'Paste Over at Playhead' is the way to keep it in perfect sync without having to desperately calculate timings, etc..
*P.S: It's best to Export that sequence of stills-with-dissolves to QuickTime as 'Full Quality' so that it becomes one whole Clip, then re-import it, and that way you can position it exactly where you want it, without any of its separate components (stills, dissolves) coming apart, or being interpreted as individual elements.
