IMac 27" 2 months old is dead

Our two month old iMac 27" has had 3 service calls. The 2nd one just over a week ago was because our CD drive stopped working. Luckily we have the extended warranty. However, we live in Beijing. The service guy came out took the screen off and took the serials numbers of everything inside. Why isn't that all linked to our main serial no? The mac is so new the new drive has to come from Singapore! A week later and still not here however, not that that matters at the moment as the mac is completely dead. Beijing service no for English routes to Singapore (thankgoodness) however they were so congested and busy I have to call back to speak with a product manager. I'm reading the forums and this seems to be a pretty common problem. I'm pretty ticked as this is an expensive computer and you expect better than it to have problems so quickly.

First a couple of things.
Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Reading these forums is like visiting a hospital and coming to the conclusion many people in the general population are sick, of course that's a silly conclusion so don't be so quick to conclude the 27" iMac has a common problem.
However you are having an issue and you should contact Apple directions to see what can be done, the phone number for China should be listed in the owners manual, if for some reason you don't have that available you can download it here. Regarding your serial number question that is anyone's guess, perhaps they simply are collecting information to see if there is a trend with a batch of parts.
Good luck!

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane and get it repaired/replaced. I had the display on my 27" iMac go south three months after buying it and they replaced it due to a similar fault. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • Imac is 4 months old.  Using installed Outlook for Mac 2011 but now want to use ical so that I can start to use iCloud to sync with my Ipad2 and iPhone.  How do I move my calendar from outlook to ical on the iMac?

This is my first attempt at using this forum so please be patient with me.  I am new to the apple world.  Bought an Imac desktop computer back in October and installed Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 because I was used to Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and outlook.  Now I am being told that I should be using ical for my calendar so that I will be better able to move to icloud for use between my Imac, Ipad2, and Iphone.
The question is:  how do I move my calendar which is in "Outlook for Mac 2011" into ical on my Mac?  Do I have to remove the Outlook entries from the computer and reinstall them back to the same machine or can I somehow move calendar entries within the machine?  I appreciate any help I can get.  Thanks.

I also already deleted my phone number from iMessage on my MBP.

  • 13-month-old battery dead?

About 10 days ago I noticed my battery would drain abnormally quickly - and recharge just as fast. Then about a day later I noticed my battery icon had a big X in it, with no info about % charge.
When I unplug it, it completely dies. The clock gets reset to 12/31/1969 anytime I unplug it, even when I've already shut it down.
Does this mean its dead? Already? I bought this PowerBook in early April 2005.
Any recommendations? Do I absolutely have to buy a new battery, and how do I know if its covered by the warranty?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
If you haven't already, you should read the two Apple notes on notebook batteries here and here.
Note that Apple discusses battery longevity in terms of the number of charge/discharge cycles and not calendar time.
Apple's warranty considers the battery a consumable item, unless there's a manufacturing defect. Assuming you have Applecare (if you don't then this is moot), the agreement says "b. Limitations The Plan does not cover:(ix) Consumable parts, such as batteries, except in respect of battery coverage under APP for iPod or unless failure has occurred due to a defect in materials and workmanship"
I've seen one battery (not an Apple) fail like that, when it was plugged in all the time, and never discharged.

  • 2 months old, screen dead, shop closed down!

    Hi All,
I wonder if someone can help.
For my daughter's birthday I bought her a Blackberry Torch from (what appeared to be) a busy ebay shop (thousands of previous happy shoppers, 98.9%, based in UK etc etc).
2 months later the phone's screen has stopped responding and I find that the ebay shop has closed !!
I have taken the phone to a reputable repair shop and they swapped both the cable and the screen, but nothing.  It still fails to work.
I am now at a loss as to what to do.  Surely I have some comeback to RIM, but I can't see anyway to approach them.
    Any thoughts?
    Glen

    Hello 5greenfamily5,
You are in a pickle of a situation indeed. Technically warranty is provided by RIM, through the authorized reseller channels, to the original purchaser of the brand new device. But RIM does nothing to service any warranty directly...all warranty is serviced by those authorized resellers, who can escalate into RIM if necessary. So, if the eBay shop you bought from was an authorized reseller AND you bought it truly brand new from them, then they (the eBay shop) are your warranty service entity...which is where your problem really get's difficult, since they shut down.
When you purchased, you should have received documentation about your warranty provisions and methods of seeking warranty support. In some locations, it could also (besides the original place of purchase) be the mobile service provider or an authorized service center...it varies by region, so we can't tell you what your provisions are...your original purchase documentation will have that information. If that documentation covers this case (of your eBay shop closing down), then you should follow whatever it is that documentation tells you to do.
If, on the other hand, this BB was not brand new to you and/or the eBay shop was not an authorized reseller, then you indeed have no warranty at all.
There is something called incident support, but it costs to just ask the initial question, since you are bypassing the contract you signed upon purchase. If you wish to investigate that, you can review it here:
    http://us.blackberry.com/support/programs/technical/incident.html
There also might be some good reading here:
    http://us.blackberry.com/legal/handheld-limited-warranty.html
But, all in all, from your description, I might not hold out much hope for receiving any warranty coverage on this device.
    Good luck!

  • Apple Tv stops playing my music(iCloud) and Music direct from my computer after 4-5 minutes regardless of a wireless or ethernet connection--Imac is 3 months old--Apple TV 1 year old?

Tried reesetting  Airport extreme and Apple TV--no luck?

    OK, no answers!
I've played music via the ATV3 for several hours without dropping the signal, so obviously the 5.2 update cannot handle the bandwidth to play movies.
I see other people here and elsewhere in the forums have the same problem. Bad Apple for not thoroughly testing.
Next question is, can I revert back to 5.1?

  • One Month Old Imac Display Bleached out

The Imac is one month old, base model upgraded to 8Gb RAM. Not running anything too heavy. Recently the display became 'bleached out', for example I cannot see the black lines between columns on the Finder, and the icons seems washed out. in addition I cannot connect a second display as when I press detect displays, none are detected. I have done the usual resets and run an online hard ware test, nothing has changed and the ahrdware is running normally apparently. Have you any sugegstions please as to how to return things back to normal?
    Thanks
    Mike
PS also recalibrated the monitor but again no change

    Hi
I had the same problem and found the answer here :
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/602429?start=0&tstart=0
    Which suggested this :
System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing > look near the bottom, there should be a Contrast adjustment slide, all the way left is normal...
Worked great for me - not sure how it was adjusted in the first place, but all is well now.

  • I have an imac osx 5 mos.old. First time today I can not open my desktop folder/files. I need to read them. Message is: appleworks 6 quit unexpectedly. I need to read them. Is it possible that new software downloaded yesterday is problem?

I have an imac osx 5 months old. For the first time today I can not open my desktop folders which are very important to me. How can I open these folders.
The message when I click on the folder is "appleworks 6 quit unexpectedly". I can not open the folder. Is it possible that new software installed could cause the problem when I get the message "new softward available for your computer, install now. Maybe I should never install upgrade. Please help in layman's language how to open my folders. Thanks.

The curious thing here is that on the one hand the code cannot be loaded so how could the trojan code be ever executed.  But you would expect the "Unexpectedly quit" message if the intel trojan did get executed in a ppc app.  So this begs the question when (and how) does the trojan code get executed in conjunction with launching an app?
I understand code injected into a specific app like safari that uses the global environment variable to access the code in /Users/Shared.  But I don't understand how that code could be executed by attempting to run an randomly chosen ppc app.  Unless of course   other code has been injected is in a more critical place than just safari and that is scary.
Some of this was explained to us a few weeks back by an infected user who reverse engineered the code, working with Intego to figure out why he was being re-directed on Google searches. At the time, nobody believed much of anything he was saying, but F-Secure explains it more fullly in this analysis. Note that there is a filter component to keep it from loading code into apps that would be unstable, so watch for the next variant to filter out ppc only apps.
In a related matter, I got word from the PC side of the house that similar techniques are being used by drive-by infections that were injecting code into a running app which would disappear when they quit the app. A one-time infection, so to speak. Makes it really hard to even know you were temporarily infected, let alone how, why, what damage, etc.

    Hi 1283ar.
Unfortunately, iOS 7 is too hard to push for the iPhone 4 and therefore has a lot of effects turned off to try to get it to run as smoothly as possible.
However, it becomes better and better with each update coming but it's hard to do anything about the hardware on an already released phones.
If you still have trouble or think they are too hard. My tip is, if so, to restore your iPhone 4 and make a clean setup with no iCloud backup. But all your photos in a photostream so you can access it later.

Sometimes the App Store version doesn't work correctly. In this case, install 10.8.4 with the Combo version > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1659?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
The Combo installer is the safest way to update OS X, and it allows you to update more than one computer with a single download

  • Is it safe/prudent to install Mavericks on my nine month old iMac

I purchased this iMac last summer:
    iMac, 21.5-inch, Late 2012. Processor:  2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory:  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Software:  OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion)
It is running only those apps that came with the computer plus Firefox, Flip4Mac and Adobe Reader.
It is connected to an HP Deskjet 3510 printer....that I don't want to mess with as far as changing settings.
After following this forum since the introduction of Mavericks, I am very leery of installing it.  Prior to my present nine month old iMac, I had a four year old iMac that "went south" after updating to Snow Leopard.  Not again.
We also have in our family a recently purchased MacBook Pro running Mavericks with no problems. It is operating quite nicely with the iMac which is still operating on Mountain Lion.

Make a backup of your ML installation before you install Mavericks, so you can revert easily if you don't like Mavericks.
    Yes, that's good advice.
    Another option is to...
    1) Make a bootable backup of your setup on an external hard drive.  SuperDuper is good for this.
    2) Update the backup to Mavericks.
    3) Test the  backup for as long as you want, focusing especially on the things you normally do.
If the backup passes all your tests, you can use SuperDuper to copy the backup back to your Mac's hard drive, replacing it's contents entirely with the new updated to Mavericks system.
If you have two external hard drives, one could be the backup of your Lion set up, while the other could contain the Mavericks version of your setup.  This way you could have your cake and eat it too, Lion AND Mavericks.
I would suggest that you DO NOT just cross your fingers, hope for the best, and update Lion to Mavericks without the backups as Apple seems to suggest.  As you've seen, this might work, or it might lead to a calamity for your Mac, and a nervous breakdown for you.
It's entirely possible to make the move safely, it just takes a bit more work than you've been led to expect, that's all.
    Good luck!

  • I need to upgrade my Mac, is there anyway I can swap my 4 month old Macbook Pro for a iMac or something with a bit more kick? (for video editing)

I would ideally like to upgrade to a new model iMac, as they and my Macbook Pro 15inch, only 4 months old go for about the same price.
Is there any way I can do this through Apple or would I have to go about it in another way. I would like to minimise spending and ideally would not like to buy a completely new computer. What I'm asking, really, is if I can trade the two?

No you cannot trade in. Sell you MBP on eBay for the best value. The best 'bang for your buck' currently offered directly from Apple is their certified refurbished machines:

  • My less than 5 month old imac 21.5 desktop is causing me some concern,it is slow to start, problems with bluetooth.problems with wi fi.whe its turned off i notice a graying in the four corners of the screen, this is i think the effects of overheating.

my imac is less than 5 months. old tommorow it goes to murcia for ¿repair?.a 25.1 1mac desktop is a formidable piece of workmanship but thatdoes not stop anything going wrong,as ive found out.in the last month it has begun to heat rapidly thus i think causing a graying in the 4 corners of the screen, this is ugly.as i keep my mac in pertfect grace ie free of dust and prints, also it freezes frequently and downright frustrating.has anyone else had similar problems.on a footnote i beleive apple care will come thru shining, but an answer to my question, wich is why in only 5 months has my imac gone wrong.

Sorry to hear you're having issues with your Mac, but just like pretty much everything else, things can go wrong.
The key is what Apple will do about it now that it has gone wrong. Because you are under warranty, contact AppleCare and explain the issues you are experiencing. There is a chance that your iMac may have to be sent in for repair.
My iMac has had issues since first bought in late 2009, in one form or another and has been repaired three times. AppleCare are going to replace the item sometime in the future, I have no idea when, but I have been without a working Mac for over three weeks now, actually it might be over four weeks.
As you said, AppleCare will sort the problem out for you, let's hope it's not a lengthy repair and they get you up and running quickly.
