IMac 27" 3.2GHz iCore 3 V/S  MacPro Dual Core 2.66GHz

Hello there,
I need some advise, my friends selling 2 Mac, they both 14 months old and they are both same prices and my questions is: which one should you buy from him and the reason "why" you go with that machine, thank you very much for all inputs.
1. iMac 27" with 3.2GHz Intel Core i3, 4GB of memory, 1TB hard drive, 8x double-layer SuperDrive, ATI Radeon HD 5670 with 512MB, mouse and keyboard of course, no additional software installed.
2. MacPro Dual Core Intel Xeon Two 2.66GHz "Woodcrest" processors, 8GB memory, ATI Radeon X1900 XT graphics with 512MB memory, 2TB hard drive, 16x double-layer SuperDrive, mouse and keyboard of course, no additional software installed but no monitor.
Thank you very much.

What do you want to do with this Mac?
High-end graphics editing or Video editing, or something more mundane?
According to this site, the 2.66 Quad core was discontinued Jan 2008. That ain't no 14-month old system.

  • Want to Upgrade my MacPro (Dual Core) 2.66 Ghz to a SSD

    Hi,
I would like to upgrade my current MacPro (Dual Core) 2.66Ghz computer that has a 250GB HD to a possible 256 SSD or bigger. Are they compatible? I dont know if this matters or not but I also have 10gb of RAMM.

Once  you install the SSD do the following. First, prepare the new SSD:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Next, clone your existing drive to the SSD (assuming the SSD is 256 GBs this will work.)
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the SSD. Source means the startup drive.
Now, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the SSD's disk icon then click on the arrow button below the icon. This will boot the computer from the SSD if all is well.
If it boots successfully then open Startup Disk preferences, select the SSD, then click on the Restart button which will restart from the SSD.

macpro dual core xeon January 2008  Why can I not download Lion even with snow leopard 10.6.8 already as sysyem?

If you need to purchase Lion call 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. Ask for a Sales Representative. They will check your Apple ID, and email you a code and instructions.  The cost is $29.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download.

  • MacPro dual Xenon 2.66ghz boot issues

I'm the new owner of a used Mac Pro. it's a dual 2.66ghz Xenon and it seems to have a booting issue. I'm an Network Admin in the PC world and I have some Mac knowledge.
I have disc's for Lepard & Snow Lepard and possibly Tiger. I cannot boot to any of these disc's or enter the diagnostic tests. To make it clear I can hold option and select the disc, however, the CD drive will spin for a few minutes then bring me to a black screen with a cursor that I can move but nothing else.
I have tried to reset the PRAM manually also with no difference.
The really interesting part is that I put a SATA hard drive loaded with Windows XP from work in the computer and it booted right to XP- the proper drivers aren't there but it got me to the login screen in 16 color mode.
I put my MB's drive in it with SL loaded just for fun and got stuck at a beach ball if I recall correctly.
Today I just read about resetting the SMC and pulling the battery to reset the "real time clock". I'll try those later too, but do you guys have any sugestions?

Lately my MacPro has been having an off and on problem when booting.
Sometimes when the peer button is pushed I will get the GONG sound and the white screen comes up but no gray Apple symbol or rotating circle below it. It just sits there with a blank white screen.
When I push the power button again the process starts again and the machine boots with no
problem. Is this symptomatic of a dying HD or some
    other component?
This is set as the primary boot drive and is running Leopard. I have a mother OS HD running SL that I am gradually switching to.
    Any ideas?

If this behaviour is consistent I would say it is probably not the HD. Failing HDs tend to behave inconsistently.
AHT is worth doing, but if first thing I would try is resetting the SMU and PRAM .

  • Do I want a 32 or a 64 bit version of Windows 7 for installation on a MacPro Dual Core 2.66 GHZ?

Which Windows 7 is recommended to run best on my machine - 2.66 GHz Dual Core Xeon?
    Thank you.

If you don't use 64-bit you get 1.9GB RAM to work with, not really much.
If you use Home Premium you have one processor.
If you install 32-bit on one drive, you can then install 64-bit from inside on a 2nd partition, but that means two copies of System Builder 7 - 32 and 64-bit.
The error is UEFI boot screen. Supported and req'd when working with EFI and GPT intro'd in very late 2007 and found on Mac Pro Early 2008 for Windows from Vista SP1 64-bit and later. It wasn't an issue with the original Vista Business 64-bit 2007 which is where I started basically (Ultimate RC1 beta also).
There are ways to reburn the DVD so it works by modifying it from an ISO which you save to disk and use ImgBurn to redo.
No issue running Windows in a VM like VirtualBox 4, and you may need to use a VM like that to use ImgBurn.
If you search for "Select CD-ROM" there are some How-To articles and forum threads here and over on MacRumors and Microsoft. The one I used is no longer available or online from "jowie" or I'd link to it.

I am up to date on 10.6.8 which is mimimum requirement for Montain Lion.

  • Imac i5 3.2ghz upgraded 24ram bootcamp sketchup and 3ds max

    Hi guys
Im from singapore and 3mths ago bought an imac i5 3.2ghz upgraded 24ram running sketchup and bootcamp+3ds max.
Currently the 3ds max is running fine, with a slight lag in speed (acceptable).
However, its running sketchup via ios that is laggy and slow, making med to large 3d models very slow and laggy to use.
Anyone had similar experience? Is it the video card issue? If changing the video card can help, what brand then would be suitable?
I really hope not to sell the i5 and buy the i7...
    All comments will be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Darren

You cannot replace/upgrade graphics cards as they are soldered onto the logic board; even if they weren't, they'd need to be replaced with the same model unless there was an upgrade offered at time of purchase.

  • Dual 2GHz or Dual Core?

Looking in to getting a refurbed G5 tower. I was wondering if anyone knew of any drastic differences between a Dual 2GHz Powermac G5 and the new Dual Core 2GHz model. Like different PCI slots or something. Also, would there be any performance gain between the two 2GHz processors and the Dual core 2GHz?
And yet another question: Would I need an adapter to hook up an older ADC Studio Display (LCD)?
    iMac G5 17" 2GHz | iBook G4 14" 933MHz | eMac 700MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I would same there is a BIG difference
Atleast performance wise i have seen a 10% increase
    compared to the dual model.
I would say that the 2x1MB L2 cache is a good thing -
    Old model had 2x512kb
Also - The DDR2 seems a nice addition and perhaps
most important is the PCI-E bus.
Also the new machine is way more silent than old Dual
    machine.
I notice the same with mine. This unit is super quiet compared to the 3 previous PM G5s I owned. The CPU fans run at a constant 600RPMs and never rev -- no matter what I'm doing. Also, this unit multi-tasks much better. I would go with the newest model.

  • Incompatibility MacPro Quad-Core 2010 and AirPort Extreme for DHCP

    Hello,
I have a MacPro 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xenon 2010 EFI 1.5, for my internet, I use an AirPort Extreme Base Station version 7.4.2.
When I try to access the internet settings of the AirPort Extreme in the DHCP, the first DHCP address does not select anything in the dropdown menu.
    Here is a picture screen:
    http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/4995/airportdhcp.jpg
I tried with a second MacPro Quad-core 2.8 Ghz and the error persists. By cons, with a MacBook Pro 3,1 or IMac 4.1, normally I go to the menu in question.
For it is impossible to modify the airport extreme settings with an error message that afirm the first IP address is invalid.
Unable to select because the menu is empty.
I really think a bug MacPro?
    Someone does have this problem?
    Thank you for your help.

It is possible that the new version of AirPort Utility may help:

    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

    IS THE SITUATION HOPELESS
I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7  iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually. The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.
Please tell me how to get this disc to eject !

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

The Mac SuperDrive built into your Mac is the Optical drive.
    1. Insert your Windows DVD in Optical drive. Disconnect any external storage.
    2. Insert a USB2 Flash drive. This will be used to hold the BC drivers.
    3. Start BCA. Check the options to download software and Install Windows. You do not need to download Windows. The BCA will download the BC drivers to the USB.
    4. Partition your drive.
    5. You can see the Windows installer screens at https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/mac/5.0/help/#/bcmp173b3bf2.

Of note there is a new AMD Catalyst Omega driver released earlier in the week that brings 5K resolution to AMD graphics cards. Here is the link (support.ad.com/en-us/download) to the AMD site. But none of these work with my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), Windows 8 bootcamp.
    Please advise.

Bluetooth shuttted down after I updated to Mavericks, please help me !
I am 70 Years old and worked very happy with my iMac (21,5“ mid 2010, 3,2 GHz Intel Core 3)
until I updated him from  SnowLeopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks 10.9.2.
2 Days all was OK. Next Morning-Start he needs (until now) 3 minutes to show me a SCREEN only milky white. After that he starts like ever with all ICONS in about 1 minute. (together 4 min.)
..But I must notice, that I cannot make anything, because the „BLUETOOTH APPLE WIRELESS KEYBOARD  and the APPLE  MAGIC MOUSE“ doesn't work anything like before.
I could nothing do, I must drop my APPLE only out.
That I maked ever 10x and all was the same... (Maveriks also 4x new updated)
I taked my Logitech-Bluetooth-Mouse from the WIN-Laptop, dropped it in USB from iMAC...and in one second I could work only with this MOUSE...I buyd the Logitech COMBO K520 and all was OK now with my lovely APPLE iMAC to work with him...But without APPLE KEYBOARD and MAGIC MOUSE...and with a 4 min. -START until now.
I  asked the EXPERTS from APPLE-SUPPORT under Tel. 0800-6645451 in Germany, became a Number, maked many Things by starting new, but the mistake after all is the same like before.
When I look into ...Apple/ Info/System/ Hardware/ Bluetooth   ..my APPLE says: NO INFOs FOUND (Es wurden keine Informationen gefunden.)
Under Hardware/ Diagnose : Selbsttest beim Einschalten: zuletzt ausgeführt: 15.05. 14, Ergebnis: Bestanden (that means OK) !!
I asked many Peaple, who sold APPLE-Computers in the STORS, but they all had no IDEA, how they can help.
I think, it could be a DRIVER when Starting the BIOS, JAVA RUNTIME a.s.o...
Is an Expert under YOU to help me by my Problem with this iMAC ?

    dietmarfromdeu,
if you start up your iMac in Safe mode, do you still have Bluetooth problems with your Apple wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse?
