IMac 27" Burn in Artifacts on Monitor

My iMac has what I'm calling some "burn-in artifacts" that appear in the upper right hand corner of the screen.  They look like dirt or smudges that never go away.  Another user posted about it some time ago:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2303433
My warranty is expired and I was wondering if anyone knows if this was part of a recall at all with the 2009 27" iMac models.  I'd like to have this problem fixed as it seems to be getting worse, but don't want to have to spend too much to get it done.
Any tips are appreciated.

If it is what Apple calls image persistence, here is some info:

If it is persistent or something else, I'd suggest making an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar for an evaluation and diagnosis. You can then decide if a repair (and the cost) are worthwhile.

Look this article over, the key is to connect either mini display port or thunderbolt and using CMD+F2, let me know if this helps or if it doesn't work out. I'll find another solution if this doesn't work Joel ^_^

Is it possible to use the old iMac 2010 21inch as an external monitor for my 15inch Macbook retina? E.g. Using a mini-display cable to connect from the imac mini display port to thunderbolt port on my macbook.

Apple shows only the 27" version supporting Target Display Mode.

Pair a wireless KB with the laptop and all should be well when you attach the laptop to the iMac and invoke TDM. But as Denny mentions, it does seem like the waste of a good iMac to use it in just this configuration. Why is the laptop primary?

    What iMac is this ?
If it is a 2009 or 2010 27" iMac than this http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924 could apply.

  • IMac 24" could not detect external monitor (early 2009 model)?

I am trying to add a second monitor to my iMac through the mini Display port with a mini-Display to VGA convert cable, somehow my iMac could not detect the second monitor at all on the preference-display menu. After connected the cable and an external monitor I restarted iMac a few times, the external monitor still could not be detected.
Any suggestions? Any simple method to test if the mini Display port is working properly? My iMac OSX 10.8.5
    Thanks
    David

    Hi,
Just tried another miniDisplay - VGA cable, it works! No need to restart iMac. Immeditely I can bring display windows to the second monitor, say, a DVD movie play to the second monitor while working on the main iMac monitor for other tasks.

  • What is the amount of DVDs that an iMac DVD Burner can burn? (or MTBF)

What is the amount of DVDs that an iMac DVD Burner can burn (DVD burner life time)? (or MTBF)

Your question sounds a bit like you want to use the Superdrive professionally? Personally, I would not depend on a vertically installed, super slim Drive where any media can easily shift by 1/100th of an inch. I've noticed that mine definitely needs to "rest" and cool off after about 3 DVDs. I purchased an external burner quite a few years ago (when I had an iMac without a Superdrive) and I still prefer to use it - it is sturdy, can read all sorts of media, and is reliable whereas the SuperDrive is known to be extremely finicky especially about the media they will read or write to.
So, I don't have a specific answer for you, but I wouldn't rely on it.

  • Can the latest i3 imac's burn more than 4.7 dvds?

Looking to find out if they can or do they need toast or a custom external dvd burner that does larger storage dvds. Thanks

    photohead,
You're iMac will burn dual-layer 8.4 Gig dvds.

  • Urgent - iMac G4 Flat Panel - Is Adding Monitor or Flat Screen TV Possible?

    Hello,
As a present to my husband (mac guru) I would like to know if with his iMac Flat Panel G4, is it better to buy a 28 inch samsung computer monitor (flat panel) that he can also hook up his mac to or a kind of flat screen/panel LCD TV. The guys at futureshop and bestbuy seem to be "confused" when talking about macs and not pcs. With the computer monitor, there seems to be questions on if we'll be able to hook up our satellite tv... and with the tvs, there seems to be confusion on if we can hook up the computer. One of the reasons I want to hook the computer directly is my husband has had problems converting (burning to DVD) some videos with music background from iPhoto without doing a software update which requires us to change the timing with the audio and video in our already created slideshows. Please help quickly as some sales finish tomorrow. I need to know what to tell the store... i.e. what kind of jack or cables or capability I am looking for. Do I ask for USB port, coaxil input or what? Thanks in advance,
    Karen

Yes you can connect a display or monitor but exactly which ones depends on which iMac G4 you have.
All iMac G4s have a Mini VGA port this will allow you to connect any standard PC Monitor (with a VGA connector) and mirror the iMac's internal display only. The later iMac G4's also allow the connection of S-Video and Composite Video devices (most TV's have this type of input) which allows you to mirror the display on to the TV.
The MiniVGA to VGA and Mini VGA to S-Video/Composite adaptors are for sale online in the Apple Store ($19US/£15) or here.
If you wanted to extend the screen size again it is possible on some iMacs but requires a firmware hack that will invalidate your warranty.
I can't understand how having an external display will solve the burning to DVD issues though.....
Post back with your Screen size and processor speed for exact info - or read this recent post

  • Imac g5 - burned power inverter?

I have one of those so called troubled Imacs with a video issue.  Video eventually went to an intense plaid like pattern but compter itself ran great. I inspected all capacitors, even the ones in the power supply and they all look perfect. I took the power inverter that feeds power to the monitor and flipped it over and saw a small area of the circuit board discolored and burned. Its where a series of 6 black wires plug into the board. I have pictures to show (see links). Any suggestions here would be great as it is an older mac and I dont want to be spending additional money at guessing the problem.

Do mac techs reply to these forums?
No. We are all just fellow Mac users who volunteer their assistance here.
13 views and not a peep!!!
None of them, including me, knows the answer, but it would seem that you need a new mother board.
Better still, a newer Mac, as that would cost you about 75% of the price of a new Mac.

  • 1 yr old imac Ghosting / Burned Screen

i bought the newest model of the imac when i came out mid 2011, the first week it came out. Well now im about a mo out of the 1 year warrenty and yesterday my screen was fine.
Tonight i notice a huge ghosting/ burned area from when i opened itunes lastnight to watch a movie on my apple tv, the ghost immage is right where the itunes window was, the ghosting is all of the shadow area where the window was, about 50% of it.
how can you get ghosting from 1 day? one would assume if its going to happen, it would be the menu bar which is always up, always in the same spot but this is super distracting as im a heavy photoshop user.
any options / help / this happened to you?

hmmm... I see that grey after image. Dissapointing.
What I believe you may have is a condition that sometimes happens with LCD screens. I firmly believe you have stuck pixels on your monitor and that I may have a solution for you.
    http://www.flexcode.org/lcd2.html
This Application (java based) rapidly changes your LCDs resolution and colours. This can bring back some of the the monitors suffering from this issue. You may need to run it it overnight to get your pixels unstuck.
Give it a shot! It's free. I have tried this program for a simular issue with a green ghosting on a 2010 model iMac
    and the problem was solved.
DO NOT WATCH THE SCREEN! It'll make you sick... for those suffering from epilepsy, get someone else to run it for you!!
Let the program run on it's own.

  • IMac Freezing and Visual Artifacts

    Hello to everyone!
I have and iMac (early 2008, 3.06 GHz) and while on and doing nothing except for some chatting, mouse stopped responding and the whole screen got full with artifacts. To see what I mean click the link below to see the video. After that the iMac froze ever while restarting. Warranty of course was over.
So I had to buy a new one, and luckily I was able to transfer all my data putting the iMac in target mode (see bellow). I tried all the reset stuff but it just altered the way the stripes appear.
Could it be the graphic card? and if so can it be repaired at a fair cost so I could sell it to someone that doesn't have much for a new Mac?
    Thanks for your attention
    The video:   http://gallery.me.com/stefbystef#100318

Here is a good troubleshooting site for many Mac OS X issues, the X Lab. There is a section on Kernel Panics and troubleshooting the cause.
Also, you can learn about basic Mac OS X maintenance; the maintenance scripts, properly installed software updates, using Disk Utility, etc.
    Good luck.

  • New iMac won't recognize my external monitor.

I just upgraded my workplace computer to a late-2012 iMac (with the thin edges) from the previous older model.
I have an external monitor that I use as a secondary screen - a Samsung SyncMaster BX2440 - that worked great on my older machine using the DVI adapter.
When I plug the same adapter into my newer machine, it won't recongize the external monitor.
I tried resetting the PRAM, but no dice.
Is this a Thunderbolt issue, and if so, how easy is it to resolve? Do I just need to get a newer DVI adapter?

Loner: I looked at that and it only shows the main iMac display. Doesn't show the other device.
The model I'm using is a Thunderbolt machine (has the lightning bolt arrow icon).  The previous machine was a DisplayPort model.
The adapter is the Apple-issued DVI adapter, but I'm guessing that even though TB and DP use the same physical plug interface, the adapters are not compatible?
(The adapter has the standard monitor icons on it - box with vertical lines on either side).

  • 24" Intel iMac with Samsung T220 as second monitor

    Hello!
Recently got an iMac with a Radeon 4850 video card which I am generally very pleased with, however..
Before I got it I used a Samsung T220 as my main monitor which provided a crisp and colourful display. When I got the iMac I decided to use it as a second monitor so ordered a miniDisplay port to DVI adaptor.
Now the issue is that while it appears to be allowing the T220 to output to it's maximum resolution (1680 x 1050) the picture still appears to be blurry. On top of this the colours appear washed out and the contrast (20,000:1) seems very low compared to when I used the monitor with my PC.
I've spent hours attempting to calibrate the monitor and playing around with colours and settings. I am using the DVI-D cable supplied with the Samsung.
Any thoughts? Do I need to update any drivers or software or is it something more fundamental.

Some display settings are stored in PRAM, so if you have not done so already, try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If there is a reset button on the display (often a recessed button), or a reset-to-default command in the display's on-screen menu, try using that as well.
There was one firmware update involving that video card
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/iMac_EFI_Firmware_Update_14
It may already be installed. You can check your current Boot ROM Version by running System Profiler and selecting Hardware in the sidebar.
