IMac 27 DisplayPort Input - Which Application?

I'm new to mac. I understand that I will need a DVI to DisplayPort converter box to view my cable box output on my iMac 27 screen. My question is how do I actually access the DisplayPort input? Is there an application I need to open? Will the iMac automatically sense the input and ask me if I want to view it? How does it work on the software side?

IMac 27" DisplayPort input from Dell E6500 jittery

I bought a DisplayPort-to-Mini-DisplayPort cable from circuitassembly.com in order to output video from a Dell E6500 (a work issued computer) to my iMac 27". It mostly works but occasionally there is a jitter/distortion intermittently, maybe every minute or so.
Has anyone run into this and if so, was there a way to stabilize it?

It could be as simple as a defective or poor quality cable. Have you tried swapping it out with another?

How to connect Digital Optical Audio output iMac with Receiver Input

I have connected iMac with onkyo hts-3300 home theater system receiver through optical audio TosLink Cable.( http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Optical-Audio-TosLink-Cable/dp/B001ZU3G2I/ref=sr12?ie=UTF8&qid=1292865309&sr=8-2 ). Unfortunately there is no sound coming out from the Home theater system. I have verified the Receiver optical input is working fine by connecting with my TV optical audio digital out put and the it's working great. The only difference between TV and iMac is, on my TV, it has optical audio digital output and I can use this cable (http://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-A102-02M-Digital-connectors/dp/B0002WPREU/ref=s r11?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1297320792&sr=1-1) to make it work. I can also verified my optical audio TosLink Cable working because I can see the red light coming out from the cable. So the only problem could be from iMac. I doubt I need to change the additional setting to configure iMac to use external optical audio setting instead of the buit in audio setting. Hoe can I able to do it? or my iMac(IMAC 21.5"/3.06/2X2GB/500GB/9400M-ITP

@rkaufmann87 : Thank you very much for your sharing about this http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/ connection. for me what i understand is the digital audio output in airportexpress is the same as the audio out put in iMac in terms of details sepcs. So this airportexpress will only help you connect wirelessly to home theatre system, rather than waired connection. Other than that nothig much difference. So there is no point for me to spend extra bucks to attain the wireless connection. Unless the airportexpress have optical digital input, which i believe not. Correct me if I m worng, thanks

Mini Displayport Input and Windows

When booted in Windows 7 on one of the 27" iMacs, is it possible to still utilize the Mini Displayport Input? The Apple + F2 to switch to input does not work when using Windows.

The video input function requires OS X to be running, so it won't work from Windows.

That will not work!
You cannot copy or migrate Adobe applications from computer to computer. There are a whole host of files in different locations which have to be installed, and copying will not do it.
In fact, you'll now have to use the Adobe Cleaner tool to remove the mess you created. You can get to it here:

Yes, the ColorPicker would be great, except as far as I can tell there's no way to assign names to the colors in my custom data provider. The user needs to know the name of the color (eg. P01 - Wisteria), but the ColorPicker only shows the hex values. Unless there's a way to change that?

Background downloading....which application ?

My iMac will start downloading in the background but I'm unable to track down which application
is doing it. I have not even launched Safari yet and it will often download for 4-5 mins. Really slows down my network
and hogs the bandwidth. Is there any program I can run to tell which of my applications is the culprit?
I've tried to catch it by checking to see who is enabled for background downloading but so far no luck.
Virus scan shows nothing so I suspicious it just a update or something but I would like to know
which program is doing it.

My guess is the anti virus software you are using may be the problem. As there are no (that's zero, none, zip, nada) viruses for OS X using anti virus software is a waste of resources and time. I would suggest reading the Macintosh Virus Guide.
You can try downloading and using Little Snitch, this may provide the information you're after.

Invisible files, which application open those?

On my old iMac DV SE with OS 9.1 I was wandering with which application can I open an invisible file? For instance I found a stange file in my Preferences Folder and I knew for sure that it was not useful, actually it seem suspect to me, so I was curious to take a look inside that thing but ResEdit can not open it because obviously there is no ressources in. What was those "old" applications used to take a deepler look in some files like that in OS 9 ? Those files have a white blank page icon with a folden corner, and they are not from Windows world.

I have had the same happen several times. More in the past year due to spyware perhaps and attempted viruses. Thank God for the Mac! I too would like to know which software and version will work on the OS9 to read all these. I've lost and cannot find "file buddy" and want to know what other s/w is around, where to download too. What you should do as with any suspect file on these good ole Macs is to remove the file, "duplicate" a copy for backup , compress it if you dave disk doubler, stuffit, and place it outside the system folder, mac HD icon/folder and into a new folder.(mine is named "pre-trash") If you have another HD installed drag & copy them to that drive. Restart the computer and check your s/w, especially browsers (IE 5.1.7 especially). Most of the pref's actually opened with the browser. Every one I have found was trashed as it was "junk". If the file is used or needed you will soon know when you open s/w and also check to see if a new file was created. The Mac being the genious that it is will create a new preference if its needed and if so, drag the old one saved in "pre-trash" back and your settings are saved. Just a few steps for that peace of mind and no harm, no foul. I hope this helps. This was taught to me way back in 1995, so it applies to almost anything you have on your computer. Anyone reading: If you know of s/w availble still for OS9 please provide the info. Thanks.

How do I find out which application is stealing focus?

I'm having problems with my Macbook Pro in which my active window keeps deselecting every 5-10 seconds or so, which is making even typing this question extremely difficult.
I have figured out from searching the web that it is because of an application stealing focus. However, in all the boards that say how to fix this problem, none of them actually tell you how to identify which application is the one stealing focus.
The most information I could find was to go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor
and to look for which application is stealing the focus, but it doesn't say WHERE to look.
Do I look at CPU? Number of threads? Real memory? What?
Here are my specs:
- Mac OS X version 10.6.8
- Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
- Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
(Let me know if you need any additional info about the system.)

First, quit all applications, close all windows and reboot the Mac. Hold down the Shift key prior to the startup chime until it finishes starting. This is called a Safe Boot and causes the system to load only its components, no third party stuff and do other housekeeping tasks. Will take AWHILE, be patient. Run ONE Apple app at a time and see if the issue persists. If it does not, then you will have determined the system is OK and the issue is caused by a third party app. Now reboot normally and see if the issue reasserts itself. Try this and holler back.
Note: running Safe Boot in day-to-day use is unadvisable cause many apps require the use of their extensions and won't work correctly, if at all.

You can probably change the ID in the "iTunes and App stores" settings on the iPad....click on the wrong account ID , select sign out, then log in with your own ID, I have not done this but I think it works.....

Get an HDMI switcher. Plug in the ATV directly to the TV and then use the switcher on the other input.

Just install it using the EJB3 profile in the installer. Don't use the "All" profile

You could use Microsoft Office for Mac, but I would recommend iWork! It's a better set of applications for a much better price. I have used both and I prefer it over Office. And Pages can not only open Word documents, you can also save documents in Word format. My brother and I both used iWork as an Office substitute when we were in college (I graduated a few years ago and he just graduated last night) and haven't had any compatibility issues. Should I buy Imac 27'' 3.1 or the new imac 27'' 2.9, which is better? The use to which it is going to give is photographs, video, text processing. If opt for the new'll have to buy an external drive for recording of videos and photographs.

Photos, text & most other things should be fine on either, Video may be a bit better with the faster one, but Video card options may be a far bigger deal.
