IMac 27 - DVI-In question

Sorry if there is another post with a clear answer on this one that I missed.
I am close becoming a convert from MS to Mac for my home desktop. The question I have on the new iMacs is regarding the DVI in capability. Today I have two MS machined (one laptop and one desktop) that share a monitor using a Belkin switch to go back and forth.
Will it be possible to attach my Dell laptop via either the VGA or the DisplayPort (which can be adapted for DVI) to the iMac so that I can dynamically switch between the two CPUs (at the same time).

Well, a Mac is an Intel PC, so one possible solution is to run Windows on the Mac. WMware Fusion has a feature on import an existing Windows installation from a PC into a virtual machine. A virtual machine runs Windows (or Linux or any compatible OS) under Mac OS X.
But if you continue using that Windows laptop, there may be a licensing issue, since you would then have two active computers using the same license; Microsoft is pretty strict about making sure each license is only on one active computer and making you re-activate if there is a significant change in hardware. So ideally, you'd have access to a separate Windows license, if you wanted to do something like that with a Mac.

Your images are "disconnected"
that means they are not in the same place on your hard disk as they were when you imported them into Elements. There are a couple ways this can happen, mostly folks who use Windows to move images to a new location instead of Elements will run into this issue.
To fix it, you either need to move them back using Windows, or Reconnect them using Elements.
You didn't mention waht version you have, but it's done the same in all versions.

IMac Adapter Out Questions (Mini-DVI to VGA)

I've got a 2.4ghz C2D 24" iMac. For two years I had the iMac hooked up to my LCD tv via this route: iMac -> Mini-DVI-to-VGA adapter -> 75' VGA Cable -> LCD TV. I recently upgraded my TV, and no longer have a VGA port on the TV. I'm not looking to replace any cables because it's quite costly, and at this point in my life I'm not willing to spend that much to replace the setup.
My new TV has a DVI-D port on it. This is a very random connection, and yes, it is DVI-D (NOT DVI-I or DVI-A). What I'm wondering is if I get another adapter, a DVI-D male to VGA female adapter, will the iMac recognize the TV? I'm not sure how the video card treats the exterior Apple Mini-DVI to VGA adapter and am wondering if a simple $5 adapter will suffice.
Any help or information regarding this would be great.

That is a common adapter and it works, but the way it works is digital-to-analog. In other words, you plug the male DVI end into your computer and the female VGA end into the VGA cable (which then goes to your monitor/TV/whatever). Unfortunately it would not work if you went DVI(Mac)-to VGA cable-to DVI(TV) because it cannot convert the analog signal back into digital.
Those adapters are handy to have anyway so you could always buy one and try it out, but I'm sure you'll just get a blank screen (or the dreaded "no signal" message). Sorry

Imac - dvi to hdmi. It works great, but I have one problem with blue flicker on my imac

Yesterday I bought a dvi to hdmi connector from Apple store, and successfully connected my iMac (10.6.8) to an LG 50" monitor.
It works great with one problem. My imac flickers blue every 2 secs when TV is on but set to other inputs.
We use the TV for other things (TiVo, DVD) as they are HDMI1, HDMI2 and the iMac is HDMI3.
I tried several things, and each worked with Audio and Video. I currently have it setup as seperate screens instead of duplicating the screens, but each worked fine. And each had the same problem below.
The problem comes if I am on the iMac and then turn on the TV to watch something. As soon as I do, my iMac display starts flickering blue every 2-3 seconds as it is obviously talking to the LG TV. As soon as I set the TV to HDMI3 everything works. If I turn the TV off, everything works.
I don't want to have to connect the cable every time I want I want to project to the TV (although I guess I can live w/ that). Is there a way to have this setup correctly?

As an update, after 2 weeks of tinkering with this setup, the iMac is usually able to settle down after about 20 seconds of flittering. And, if it does happen where the iMac stays blue screen, I can switch the TV to show the HDMI input from the computer, which works, and if I want, switch it back.
So, all in all, it works very well. I just needed some more patience.

New iMac, have several questions

First of all I'm not sure if this is the right community to post to. My questions seem to span several forum categories. If there is a better general forum for my questions, please let me know.
I just got a new iMac, (21.5 inch late 2013), with a 1T fusion drive and pre-loaded with Yosemite (version 10.10.1). My "old" iMac is a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo vintage 2006 model with 3G RAM and running Leopard and Snow Leopard. I'm trying to learn the ins and outs of my new iMac and Yosemite and I have some questions. Keep in mind that I'm an old dog trying to learn some new tricks, so please be patient.
1. I think I may already have the answer on this one (via the FAQ I read about Fusion Drives) but I'll ask anyway just to be sure I understand. On my previous macs, I've always partitioned my hard drive into 3 or 4 partitions and I would like to do the same with my new iMac. I tried following the Disk Utility Help but I'm running into a problem. Apparently I can only partition my fusion drive into two partitions. If I try to further partition either of those partitions I find I can only merge the existing two partitions back together. According to the Disk Utility help file, I should be able to create as many partitions as I want. So which is correct, the FAQ, (only two partition on a Fusion Drive), or the Disk Utility help, (as many partitions as I want)? And if I can have more than two partitions, how do I do that?
2. Related to question 1, I also have an external hard drive (plain vanilla iOmega type) that is connected to my old iMac via USB cable. I use it for backup storage. Will there be any problem using that drive with my new iMac?
3. One of my partitions is for Windows. I know OS X has Boot Camp but my understanding is that a user must restart when switching between OS X and Windows. Is that still true for Yosemite? If so, I'll stick with Parallels.
4. Related to question 3, the help link for setting up Boot Camp indicates I need a 64 bit version of Windows 7. I have a 32 bit version. Is that an issue (keep in mind, I'll likely be using Parallels)?
5. More on Windows. I see there is an option to format a Windows partition as MS-DOS FAT. On my old iMac my Windows partition was formatted as normal Mac OS Extended (journaled) and that works fine. Is there a reason I should format the Windows partition on my new iMac as MS-DOS FAT?
6. I miss seeing the hard drive icons on my desktop, everything seems to be in the dock. Is there a way to show my hard drive icon and any other partitions on my desktop?
7. Of course my biggest job will be to transfer data from my old iMac to the new one. The Firewire port on my old iMac is dead (zapped by lightning a few years ago). What is the best way to transfer data between the two computers? Note, I see a warning in the Disk Utility help file that "to prevent loss of data on your Fusion Drive don't connect it to a mac that's using a version of OS X older than 10.8.5". Is that warning relevant to transferring my data since my old iMac has
10.5.8 and 10.6.8?
That's my first barrage of newbie questions. There will likely be more.

Thanks for the quick reply. I understand 1, 2 and 3. I'll check with the Parallels people to get full resolution on items 4 & 5. It's a shame about the restart requirement for Boot Camp.
Item 6 is a "duh". If I'd looked further I could have answered my own question.
For item 7 I didn't get a definitive answer to my question about the relevancy of the warning. Is there an issue? For the answer you did provide are you saying i should dump everything from my old iMac onto my external hard drive and then move that external drive to the new iMac and load it? With regard to using a network approach, all I have is airport to my DSL router from my old iMac and then either Firewire or airport from the router to my new iMac. How would I use that setup? I have no other local or remote "network".

Since I have lots of Windows 7 software/apps which I will still need to use, I have a few questions:
1. What is the "best" way to enable a Windows 7 virtual instance on iMac?
     - Boot Camp
     - Parallels
     - Other?
2. Do I need to partition the iMac HDD to enable this? If so, which tools would you recommend to do this relatively easily?
3. Do I need a separate dedicated NTFS-formatted external HDD for the Windows 7 virtual instance?

1. There is no best way. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, so each exist to accomodate your needs. If you are run graphics intensive Windows apps suchs as 3D gaming, CAD/CAM, etc then you would benefit by booting into Boot Camp, however if your apps are more office traditional then running virtualization apps such as Parallels or VM Fusion is absolutely the way to go. The advantage of Boot Camp is it's a dedicated Windows Machine, you can boot into either Boot Camp (Windows) or OS X but you cannot do both simultaneously. If you decide on virtualization the performance is great and you can run OS X and Windows together. Many switchers (myself included) started with both OS's on their Macs but over time drop using MS Windows after they have migrated all their Windows apps to OS X based apps.
2. If you decide on the Boot Camp option then launch Boot Camp Assistant and it will walk you through setting up the partition, if you buy virtualization apps then follow the install instructions that come with the app.

Urgent iMac Hard drive question!

I have an 08 20" iMac with a bad hard drive. I am looking to replace it. Is there a list of compatible hard drives somewhere so I know what to look for? Also, I have a MacBook pro from the same year. Am I able to use the hard drive from the MacBook in the iMac? Any help is greatly appreciated! I am looking for something around 500GB. Also, does anyone have an idea how much it would be to have someone install it for me if I provided my own hard drive? The quote right now from an Apple retailer is $250 for the hard drive plus installation. I'm hoping to save a few bucks by providing my own.

Any SATA II 3.5" hard drive will work, you can navigate to www.macsales.comand see a fairly complete list of compatible hard drives. However as the previous poster mentioned working on an iMac is not recommended unless you are extremely comfortable working on notebook computers. Working on an iMac is not simple and it's easy to damage it beyond repair unless you know exactly what you're doing. I'd recommend taking the machine to your local AASP and have them do it.
Finally to answer your question regarding using your old MBP's HD, no that is a 2.5" HD and the iMacs use 3.5" HDs.

VGA/XVGA/DVI - tech questions

This is not a question about displays as such, but their interconnection. I hope this is a suitable forum.
I want some technical info on the VGA, XVGA, DVI, RGB and the twenty or so other connectors available for displays (including TVs)
Particularly I want to know details about the VGA connector on my iBook. Is VGA a digital output? What is it's resolution? If it's not a digital interface and is simply an RGB signal, why so many (15) pins?
A friend wants me to hook my G4 to his LCD TV and compare the DVD playback from the iBook and his DVD player. His TV manual talks about using an RGB/DVI conversion cable when driving the TV from a Mac. It shows a 15 pin RGB cable (like the connector that comes with the G4), yet the DVI end of the conversion cable has 24 pins.
All very complicated. Can anyone direct me to a site that would have technical specs for VGA & DVI plugs: ie what pin is what.

IBook vs. iMac, and Airport Questions

Hi everybody,
After the announcement of the new iMac, I am seriously considering buying an iMac. However, I have a few questions, is the G5 alot more powerful than the G4? because the .48 Ghz difference, as a PC user, doesn't mean that much to me. I am a teenager, I do enjoy my games, but also want something that I can be productive on. I make web sites and do graphic editing with photoshop. However, I do not have the funds to spring for a powerbook or powermac, so I have the choice of the iBook or the iMac. I need to know what would be more useful for me, I do not need too much portability, but does the portability outweigh the extra .48 ghz, or is that .48 Ghz actually a significant difference? And my last question is: Is the wireless card in both computers compatible with any wireless router, or only an apple one?
P.S. based on my computer listed below, you can see I am due for an upgrade

I am the proud owner of an iMac G5 and an iBook G4 and I can tell you that the iBook G4 is a very sturdy and reliable computer. In terms of power, the iBook G4 is a bit limited on RAM specs if you are working with Adobe Creative Suite, for example, and needed to open several apps at once. Or if you are editing video; in that case the iBook works fine but there can be some problems because the graphics card in the iBook is much less powerful than the iMac's graphics card. One more thing about the new iMac G5: it uses DDR2 533 SDRAM, which is faster per megabyte/gigabyte. You will pay a lot for maxing out RAM though.
Either choice would be a good one; it really depends on your budget and what you want to do with it. I use my iBook to do web design with Macromedia Studio 8, and the programs run quite well. For most purposes, the iBook shines.

IMac Hard Reboot - Questions

Here are my system details:
- Late 2006 edition - 2.0ghz, 1gb RAM, 160gb HDD, 17"
- originally had Tiger, but now running Snow Leopard
I am looking to try to "clean up" the computer for resale as I am looking to purchase a new iMac (either the current version or new one in June/July), but I have some programs where I don't have actual disks to reinstall them. Some of the programs are: Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint (all 2008 version), iBank.
Here are my questions:
1. If I want to continue to run Snow Leopard, do I need to reinstall Tiger, then upgrade to Snow Leopard?
2. If I do this, will I "lose" my other programs?
3. Is there a better way?
4. Is the best way to get all of my documents off of my External HDD to use Migration Assistant?

Chances are you will NOT be able to run Snow Leopard on the new Mac. You will need to run the OS that it ships with which is currently Lion. This should be OK unless you have some legacy PPC (Power PC) based apps. You can check your app inventory by opening System Profiler (Applications - Utilities - System Profiler), click Applications on the left and then look in the Kind column. Apps that are Intel & Universal will work fine, PPC apps will not run on Lion at all.

Yes use Migration Assistant. My suggestion would be to use an external HD and create a bootable clone of your internal HD. The most popular apps for creating a bootable clone are Carbon Copy Cloner & SuperDuper, you can then migrate from the clone. This also gives you a backup of the old system just in case there is a problem and you can re-use the external HD any way you like, for example for a Time Machine backup drive or to continue using it to create a bootable clone of the new system.
I'm not sure what you're referring to by a re-boot however I think you are asking "How do I prepare my Mac for resale." If I'm correct please read these two articles:

Older iMac DVI

I have an older 24" iMac (about 4 years old). I was wondering if it has a DVI output. All I see is firewire and USB. Can DVI be sent out of a USB port?
I need to get DVI out to feed HD video into a monitor. Matrox has a device for this but it needs to see DVI coming into it.

What monitor and what input connection(s) does it have?
Most PC monitors have either VGA or DVI inputs and if that's what yours has, then you would want an Apple Mini DVI to DVI adapter and a standard DVI cable.

New iMac - set up question

I'm just about to take delivery of a new iMac.
At the moment I use Logic 8 on a Core Duo Mac Mini with all the Content (Loops Jam Pacs) stored on an external Hard Drive, which I also record to. My interface is a MOTU 896.
The Mac Mini runs fine in every respect - no crashes or glitches - recording with Logic is fine. I play classical guitar so the silent Mini has been great. I usually have 2 audio tracks for the guitar and a couple of midi tracks for strings etc - keeping it all simple.
Questions:-
a) given that all is OK on the Mac Mini - could I simply Migrate my account and applications to the new iMac using the Migration assistant? Will this also move my MOTU and M-Audio(keyboard)Drivers?
or
b) If I opt for a clean install of Logic 8 onto the iMac, how do I access the content from the External Hard Drive, or should I re-install the content as well as part of the installation?
c) I was planning on daisychaining the MOTU through the hard drive to the iMac. This works fine on the Mac Mini. Would I be better off having Logic and the Content stored on the iMac (now that I will have plently of space) and also record to the iMac - or should I keep the set up as is with the Content stored on the External and also keep Recording to the External Drive?

Copied Iphoto 9 library to new Imac... question on faces...

I have an old macbook with Iphoto 9 loaded. Faces never worked right on the Macbook and after a while, I just gave up.
I bought a new Imac yesterday and spent a while trying to figure out how to get my Iphoto library over to the new machine.
First, I used migration assistant and tried to migrate files from my time machine. It"migrated" the user that is defined on my macbook and the associated folders I specified in migration assistant (music, movies, pictures). I thought it would just populate Itunes, Imovie and Iphoto, but it actually just copied user "Mike" (my name is the user on my macbook) and the files, and then I couldn't even get at them (had some message saying they were locked or I didn't have permission or something to that effect)! I thought it would automatically populate Itunes, Imovie and Iphoto with all my stuff from the time machine... but nope.
So, I deleted the user "Mike" from my Imac since it was unaccessible anyway.
Second, I decided to open Iphoto 11 from the new Imac and use the "import photos" command from there. I navigated to the image folder on my Time Machine and imported that way. I got closer this time... but it imported 32,000 images when all I have is ~6000! Tons of duplicates and triplicates were loaded! Doh. Round 2 was a bust.
Third, I decided to delete the Iphoto library on the new Imac (since it now contained 32,000 images) and instead, straight up copy the Iphoto library from Time Machine and paste it into the approrpriate directory (this was midnight, so a little fuzzy, but think it was just in user>pictures... can't remember if there was an "Itunes" folder or not.) Regardless, the Iphoto library seems to have copied over OK! When I opened Iphoto this morning, it gave me a messahe about upgrading my Iphoto Library, but once that was done, all 6000 pictures were there, with all the events, etc. So everything seems just fine.
So really, 2 questions:
1) Was this the right way to have done it all along or did I screw something up now that I will pay for later? And if so, how should I fix it?
2) I want to wipe out my "Faces" and start from scratch. The "Faces" that are there now are left over attempts to get the Faces in my Iphoto 9 working (basically, it didn't work at all and the only phots in the folders are ones I manually put in there), and just want Iphoto 11 to do its thing without any legacy '09 attempts. How do I wipe out what is in the Faces Corkboard and let Iphoto 11 go to work with identifying faces from scratch?

The correct way to move Library is to copy it to the new machine and just open it. You got it right at the end.
Just erase the Faces. Select a Face and go command-delete

24 inch Imac Problems and Questions

Hello,
I have been using my new imac 24 inch for a few days. There is a constant noise whenever the computer is put in energy save mode. In other words, if u don't touch the computer for a few minutes, the brightness will dim, and there will be a noise. Once I touch the keyboard or mice, the noise is gone. I wonder what is the cause and how can i solve it?
Secondly, are there any good blue tooth keyboard sets that work well with the new mac?

Hello,
The symptom you describe is a common observation among the new iMac 24-inch owners. There does not appear to be a "cure" for it yet. But, you could call Apple and request a fix / repair for the issue.
Many of the iMac G5 systems had this problem as well, and Apple eventually repaired the affected machines. It was a transformer problem if I remember correctly.
As for BlueTooth Keyboards and Mice, Apple's BlueTooth Keyboard and Mouse are probably among the best. But, there are offerings from Microsoft and others that are great as well. So, you have lots of options there.
Apple's are definitely compatible. And, Microsoft's Keyboards and Mice usually have no trouble with Macs either. As for other brands, just check for the list of compatible computers on the box.
