IMac 27 inch hum/buzz/vibration

I have just come from the new Apple store in Hornsby, having returned the second iMac 27 inch computer with a hum/buzz/vibration noise complaint.
APPLE THIS IS NOT A MYTH AND NOT ACCEPTABLE!
The story goes like this...
I bought a 3.4 Ghz, quad core 27 inch iMac with a 1TB Seagate HDD and 8GB of RAM, and the 1GB video card a few months ago from the Apple store in Castle Hill, Sydney NSW. Took the machine home, set it up, and was extremely happy with it. Upgraded to Lion, had no issues with performance or ambient noise etc... it was whisper quiet. I would leave the machine running all the time, letting it simply sleep when inactive, and it never made a sound other than the optical drive or maybe occasionally the drive heads when reading or writing data. It was dead silent!
I receieved an email from Apple stating that in some circumstances the Seagate drive could fail, and for me to contact a store to make an appointment to have the drive replaced as part of a product recall. I thought 'I'll do the right thing' and made an appointment with Castle Hill Apple store to see a 'Genius'. Here comes my first gripe! I am an IT professional myslef (a CIO with a technical background) I should add, at this point. When I made the appointment I was unable to ascertain the status of stock for the replacement hard drives or how long the replacement would take. I get to Castle Hill and I am advised that the drives are not in stock and it could take a few days to get this completed. I don't want to be without my new computer for that long!? So I take it home and rethink how I should approach this.
Hornsby Apple store opens! I live in Hornsby so that suits me! On talking to a representative at the Hornsby store just this Friday passed I am advised that they do have the 1TB replacement drives in stock so make an appointment quick smart! So I do. It goes downhill from here...
On Sunday just passed I drop my iMac (Serial # C02FG03YDMW8) with a Seagate 1TB HDD in for hard drive replacement. As my data needed to be transferred from one drive to the other, I was told it would take overnight. No problem I thought. All good. I pick up the iMac the next day, with the Seagate drive replaced with a Western Digital one, and take it home. Set it up and turn it on. Suddenly my iMac is no longer 'whisper quiet'. From the point the system status chord sounds there is a humming or buzzing 'droan' that resonates through the desk and can be heard even over my television, fridge and fish tank! Sitting in front of the iMac for more than 10 minutes results in discomfort from the sound. It didn't make this noise before!? My assumption was that the new drive was either faulty or incorrectly installed. Dissapointed, and informed by reading countless blogs and forums on others returning multiple iMacs with the same complaint, I box back up my iMac (which I had previously been VERY happy with - previous to it being a buzzing machine that was) and the next morning (Tuesday) return it to the Hornsby store.
At this point I must note that the staff (Manager Kate and Technician or 'Genius' James) have been outstanding in terms of customer support. I cannot fault the staff at this point, just the product.
Tuesday morning the folks at the Apple store advise that they can either try to repair my now noisy iMac, or replace it. I figure, well I'll replace it then. So James sets about that day transferring all my data again, moving my 8GB of Ram from the machine with serial number C02FG03YDMW8 to a new machine, with serial number C02FP02MDMW8. The new machine has in it of course, a Western Digital drive (not that I am attributing the hum/buzz/vibration to the WD drive, but it is an odd coincidence don't you think?). I pick that machine up Tuesday afternoon, thanking everyone for all their wonderful help, and knocking on wood that this new machine is as faultless as my first one was prior to the drive replacement. Guess what!? It wasn't!!!
So I return the second machine this morning. You guessed it... I am now irate. The 'Genius' told me he could not recreate the issue... OF COURSE! GENIUS! You have music in the background and it's a noisy store! I wish I had never let anyone touch my iMac in the first place. As I've said I've read countless forums on this issue - it DOES EXIST! If I pick up the machine when running, the buzz vanishes. You can FEEL the vibration through the stand. If you lean the machine forwards onto the front ledge of the stand the sound goes. It is something to do with a moving component that is creating a vibration and in quiet environments the noise actually becomes irritant. I left my iMac running overnight and from my bedroom, I could hear the droan. The desk is a wooden desk, on tiled floor - but I must impress, MY FIRST iMac DID NOT MAKE THIS DROAN!
Anyone wish to comment? Apple maybe!? The iMac is in the shop for further diagnostics.

I also have 2 Tb Hitachi iMac 2011 with SSD. The source of constant noise is Hitachi drive. When iMac runs just on SSD it's dead silent. Disappointed with this issue for so expensive model. Changing the tabble or using rubber pad like some people advice don't help at all. I saw some iMacs which are almost dead silent, so it's weird Apple sells so different models, especially when you pay much more to get that 2 Tb drive. I am already out of my 2 weeks return/exchange period, and actually I had a very little hope on the shop - they surely will tell it's normal since the drive is OK. I called Apple authorized service and they tell iMacs can be as loud as 30 Db. But it's weird, I saw a bottom line 512 Gb model in the shop and couldn't hear any buzz even with my ear touching the screen. Surely the constant HDD buzz just attracts the attention and makes overall impression from using iMac not that positive. I saw older iMacs, even plastic ones, they are all dead silent. So what can we do in this situation? Surely Apple won't serve it as a warranty issue. Also customers are very limited in choosing replacement hard drives as Apple now uses proprietary models, and many of them tend to be noisy....
Actually when you have an SSD drive you can unmount your second hard drive and it becomes silent. You can even specify the drives to go to sleep after 1 minute of inactivity with pmset Terminal command. But it will start to spin again again after going from sleep. Also if you have some third-party tools like Parallels installed, the second drive will not sleep at all cause Parallels causes some conflict.
Overall this computer is dead silent when the secondary HDD is not spinning, even in games.
I really don't know what to do

Replacement 20" iMac Constantly Humming

I have just received my replacement 20" aluminium iMac. I have had it replaced as the screen had the known gradient problem where its brighter at the bottom and darker at the top.
Well first of all, the gradient problem is still there in this one, I knew this would happen as everyone else with the issue reported it range-wide, despite Apple recommending a replacement.
But what's worse, this replacement model is producing a significantly loud humming noise coming from inside the machine which sort of 'throbs' or 'pulsates'. I am so unhappy at the moment! I am already unsure what to do with the gradient issues, and now this!
I understand many have reported the 24" iMac producing humming noises, but I am yet to see anyone with a 20" iMac report this, as well as the fact that the humming is fading in and out.
If anyone else is having this same problem with the 20" iMac, please do tell! And is there a way of fixing the issue? Or does it look like this one has to go back as well? If it does, then I will be asking for a refund as this is just totally unacceptable quality for Apple.

I would install iStat Pro and look at your fan speeds. The normal speeds are around:
CPU Fan 1200 RPM
Hard Drive 1200 RPM
Optical Drive 999RPM
If they are way different than these, then look into SMC Fan control to see if lowering your fan speed helps. BUT watch your temperatures using iPro. I thought my iMac was humming but it turns out that everything was within specs and that my den is very silent so any noise seemed out of place. Good Luck

845gl-p headset jack hum/buzz

Purchased a Hermes 845gl-p about a month ago. After buying a P4 2.4 400HZ, Samsung combo drive, WD 120GB 8MB buffer special edition, and 2 512MB sticks of Crucial memory, I have a sound problem. The front headset jack has a loud hum/buzz when the system boots, mouse moves, hard drive access, or DVD plays. Tried disabling the sound card in the BIOS, NO change. Removed the hard drive and used a WD setup floppy, NO change. Removed the CDRW-DVD, NO change. Grounded the hard drive holder to the power supply, NO change. MSI USA recommended isolating the MB on cardboard, but that leaves no way to anchor the CPU fan. It this a bad board? Did I miss something in SETUP? Should I wake up from this bad dream? Any thoughts? ?(

Try toggeling the "spread spectrum" option in the bios.

24" iMac Started to Buzz!

I've had my new 24" iMac for about 2-3 weeks now, and it just started buzzing when taken down from full brightness.
Are there any other solutions to this problem other than sending it in for repair?
I don't yet have a big enough external HD to make a backup, so maybe i will just wait until i get one and have time to send it in. Should be covered, right?

On my machine the brightness buzz is unconnected to the tilting one. The noise caused by using the brightness controls is more of a hum and is completely avoidable with the use of Gamma Control.
The other noise that I get intermittently is more like the low drone of an insect's wings and is entirely mechanical in origin. When it starts I can eliminate it by tipping the display very far forward or back. With the screen in a more sensible position, I've found that the very slightest pressure, forward or back, on any side or corner of the display cuts the noise completely. It's as though the fan occasionally becomes misaligned in some way and the tiny degree of twisting is enough to correct it.

I noticed a quite hum in my speakers, Mackie MR8s, and cold not figure out what it was. So going through the menus in Logic Express 8 I found the "audio" under settings. Where it says sample rate I changed it to 48 kHz and the hum disappeared. I went to switch it back and I get a buzz, but only when the 44 kHz sample rate is chosen. Does any know why it would create a hum? Thanks.

It's more of a a real quite hiss than a hum. My battery backup was making them buzz so I've moved that across the room. Could it because of their close proximity to my imac or other electrical items on the other side of my wall in the other room. The hum doesn't come through on headphones or in recordings. Thanks.

IMac i7 humming

Hi. Whenever I turn my iMac on, a second after the screen has come on something starts to spin up until it reaches it's maximum (like a fan on full whack). When on full whack it makes a humming noise almost like a vibration. If I lift the computer off the desk it is hardly audible. This issue I don't think was present on my first iMac which had a half dark screen but it was present on my 2nd iMac which had a perfect screen. Now my 3rd iMac has arrived today with the same humming issue and I think the screen is slightly yellow all over.
I am fairly sure I am going to get a replacement but I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem.

If you have no other problems, i.e., startup, freezes and restart, or shutdown, and the computer is functioning normally, then my first guess would be a fan but I don't know why, something could be mechanically wrong with it. But if it's racing at or near maximum then there is something more complicated then a malfunctioning fan. If not the fan, then it would be the HD. In either case, back up your material before returning it to Apple.

New imac and a buzzing noise - is it normal because it's irritating?

I got my new imac delivered today. Most things are fab, but I'm a bit disappointed with a buzzing noise that only happens when I reduce the brightness of the screen using the slider in the display icon under system preferences. If I keep it at optimum brightness the buzzing doesn't happen. Is there any way of darkening the screen another way?
I'm finding it big and too bright initially as I'm not used to a 24" screen. Is this something that happens or should I send it back?
Anyone care to try theirs and see for me? I would really appreciate this as it's really bothering me and I don't want to complain if I don't have to.

Try using: Shades from Charcoal Design be sure to download the "Intel" version. Shades gives you brightness control all the way down to a black screen, great for working in a dimmly lit room.

It's only my opinion, but I find that text images stay sharper at the lower levels using Shades!

IMac 24" humming

My 24" make the humming sound from the monitor. When i lower the brightness the sound become louder but even at 100% of brightness this hum is still noticeable (easy way to test is wait for the standby of the screen, in this way you realize that the humming is about 75% of the noise produced by this iMac).
I've heard of one person that after 3 exchange has received one iMac without the hum (but with one death pixel).
I wonder if this humming is:
1) normal for this model (there are many many 24 with the hum)
2) if it is possible that this hum from the inverter may be a symptom of a worse problem (incoming death of the inverter?)
In this iMac the "disable the half-dim before standby" option is also NOT working (is unchecked in system preferences but the screen continues to lower the brightness after some time).

I bought a 20" intel imac back in Feb, totally quiet. Recently upgraded to the new 24 incher - noticed the screen hum noise almost immediately. Annoying, especially after having a totally silent iMac.
From checking around the web and here it seems that this is only (or most commonly) found on the 24 inchers, not the 20 or 17. Then you've got to factor in the # of people who just have it but probably just don't notice it. I would return it but again from what I've read, it seems people have gotten replacements with the same hum more often than not. So my questions would be:
1. Does apple know about this issue? Sounds like every story about calling support results in the tech saying he/she has never heard of this and issuing a replacement. I don't doubt that I would get the same response if I called - I'd like to hear that Apple has been hearing more and more about this problem and are working on a fix. I'll probably call just to log the issue one more time in their database.
2. Is it hardware or software? Software I can live with, provided Apple acknowledges it and has a firmware fix in the works. To test whether it was something in the OS I loaded boot camp and messed around with the brightness in Windows, same hum - doesn't look good (or sound good that is).

Imac 17" hum

Hi,
I had been away from my computer for about a week with it being switched off.
When I came back from my business trip, I noticed my imac 17" had developed a low hum. I am sure it is not the fan and I have read up on it here on the discussion groups.
Is this something to be concerned about or is it just a "design imperfection"?

I don't recall reading so, but that doesn't mean much. Many posters don't return here with their eventual results. Some never know, after leaving it at the shop for a week or two, if it's still as loud or quieter. If the technician tells them "it should be quieter now," that suggestion may be all it takes to convince them.
If the issue does tend to develop into a logic board replacement, I'd think that now, more than a year after the introduction of the Intel-based iMacs, it would have become clear from these boards that something like that was going on.
It's difficult for a user to explain how much more annoying it's become, so I'm not sure it's fair to you if any of us here dissuade you from your own interpretation. If it is truly annoying to you, I would hope you'd at least contact Apple and get it on the record with them that you find it so.
Getting Apple to open a repair case file on it [one with a number that you'll be able to later refer back to them] so that you can take it to an AASP (Apple authorized service provider) might be the least you should do to protect your own financial interest (under your warranty). That way, if it happens to develop into a new logic board, your visit for help will be on the record, even if at that time a technician says nothing is wrong. Best of luck:)

Ipad 2 buzzing/vibrating during charging

Have just received my Ipad 2 16G wifi through Apple Store,
Found that there is some abnormality during charging: i can actually feeling the vibration/buzzing when touch with finger.
Anyone have any idea what is the problem. As the customer service is closed during weekend, will only be able to call them tomorrow.

Why does my iMac make a buzzing noise any time my iPhone 5 is near it, even when the phone is on wifi?

It reminds me of back in the day when your computer speakers would get interference whenever your cell phone is near it, but this is just a constant buzzing coming from my iMac whenever i have my iPhone 5 near it (e.g. sitting on the table next to the iMac when it's plugged in). My iPhone 4 and my last few phones before that never did that. I thought it might have been the LTE signal causing it, but it does it when it's on wifi as well.
The sound is louder if I have messenger running for some reason. It's odd as ****! If anyone has any ideas, please let me know!

I forgot to add, it's a Verizon phone so it's CDMA. It used to be only GSM phones that did this.

IMac 2010 i7 buzzing

Does anyone else have problems with the new 2010 iMac 27" i7 Quad Core emitting quite irritating buzzing noises when the display is sleeping or is dimmed?
It stats buzzing when the CPU temperature reaches 50C+ and the screen goes into power saving mode.

I'd believe you. And at the same time, Microsoft was facing lawsuits right and left over the 360. They tried for a very long time to deny that there was ever an issue. Not sure what idiot PR firms are advising corporations these days, but denying an issue usually just ends up making matters worse.
Anyone here remember the issue Nintendo had with Wiimote wrist straps? Probably not, because they admitted to a problem pretty much right away, sent out better straps, and that was the end of that.
Apple has always been an arrogant company. It nearly drove them out of business not more than 10-11 years ago. With the success they've been enjoying lately, what exactly do you expect? Despite people knowing about the antenna problems with the iPhone 4, people kept flocking to stores to buy it. I've been expecting the iPod business to collapse under its own weight for 2-3 years now. So far, they seem to be defying all odds, and it's a little hard to not let that go to your head. Sooner or later, however, the market will knock them down a couple pegs.
None of this helps you now, but on behalf of all the people who get systems that work flawlessly because you are getting all the defects, I thank you for your service.

IMac HD sensitivity to vibration or movement

I have a new iMac 3.2 GHz 21.5". How sensitive is its hard drive to vibration and/or movement? Is it ok to adjust screen tilt, or adjust viewing angle by rotating the whole computer while it is on?
The "Everything Mac" manual warns against repositioning the computer while it is on.

You can adjust screen tilt etc. no problem. Just be gentle and slow. The drive is spinning mechanically at great speed and doesn't appreciate any knocks. They are warning against lifting the entire computer up and placing it back down or jerking it while attempting to slide it where it's sitting, which might cause sufficient vibration to damage the drive.

W510 annoying humming / buzzing / whining sound fixed!

In another post, someone diagnosed the issue for this annoying whining noise that comes from the rear left of the machine as the backlight component of the screen and suggested a connection to the NVidia driver for the NVidia Quadro FX 880M that is an option on the W510.
After going to the Nvidia site and downloading their latest WQHL driver for Win 7 x64, the noise is gone. Lenovo does not have this driver on their website. The download also contains a driver update for the Nvidia audio which I also installed. Although this is not definitive, the sound is gone. Good luck.

Interestingly, the noise has appeared on my system again, (after not being there since my 3rd and most recent system board replacement)... And now that you mention it, I was running the NVidia drivers for a few weeks because of the fact StarCraft2 was crashing the PC repeatedly... I installed the OLD drivers (aka, official Lenovo drivers) and the noise is back with a vengance.... I hadn't made the correlation until you mention it.
It's really too bad Lenovo maintains a full year gap from NVidia's latest drivers.

Any iMac 24-inch horror stories or is it all good so far?

I've been looking around these forums for a while, as I've been updating my iMac. I had a G5 1.9GHz with iSight cam which I got in December last year (just a few weeks before Apple released the Core Duo version, I was very miffed), and decided to get a MacBook Pro (see spec listed in the signature). However, I have experienced one or two problems. One, heat (well, only to be expected), two, a very strange metalic clicking noise every 40 seconds or so from the hard drive (no one seems to know what it is and at a guess it seems to be that it's the hard drive actuator in free flight (i.e. not under correct control of it's servo mechanism) hitting the end stop and three my System Preferences icons keep going a little odd and I keep having to trash a pref file and reboot to solve it.
As you can guess, I am wondering if there may have been a better answer to my problem and wondered (as I was very impressed with it when I saw it at the Apple Retail Store the other day) how people are getting along in 64-bit Core 2 Duo land with the newer iMac's and especially the 24-inch model! Anything to report (especially stuck/dead pixels, as I had a lot of problems with them on my previous iMac's), or is everything going smoothly?

Well, an update. I reinstalled OS X, and everything seems fine except for Front Row. Apparently, from what I read over at the Front Row forum, there is some kind of glitch going on. I'll be posting about it over there. The only other thing that was off, and this is minimal in my estimation, was the Mighty Mouse that came with the iMac. It buzzes. I connected it to two other Macs, and it continued to buzz (or make a weird buzz/whir sound combined. Something funky in the mouse I gather.
The screen is gorgeous, no dead pixels, no dark spots. I'm using User Switching, and made accounts for my wife and my son. The switching is working vey nicely. I screwed up the transfer of my work music library to iTunes and had to start from scratch (having lost all the playlists, etc. Oh well. The bigger hassle again is that Front Row seems to think some songs are not authorized.
So, it has been working well, and handling all the apps I've run so far without a hitch. I've used the whole iLife suite, including iWeb. I used a non-intel native Photoshop CS and it works quite well. Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Pages, Keynote, Final Cut Pro, Omniweb, Firefox, iBank, FileMaker Pro Advanced 8.5, and a host of other apps. Fast loading (the 2Gb of RAM helps).
This beauty is also super quiet. No clicks, no whirring sounds, no buzzing, no cracking, and hardly any sound of accessing disk or anything. It has proven quite silent. Bright as all get out, and I find my eyes working hard at trying to take in all the screen or move around it, but I have to adjust ergonomically to this larger screen.
The remote is fine, it sticks to side and does not fall. The speakers sound strong, much more so than I expected, but the positioning could be improved (pointing downward is not very effective). The Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 have not arrived (I expect them tomorrow), but I will post as soon as I test them. The DVD player handled DVDs with ease, and it was a pleasure to watch.
I'm using a wireless mouse that the iMac had no trouble recognizing, but the mouse at times feels a bit jittery, as if it wants to roam a bit. The iMac also had no trouble recognizing my Samsung t-509 via bluetooth, but of course, iSync won't sync with this particular phone. Samsung just doesn't seem to want to play nice.
One complaint: I wish OS X gave me more flexibility with parental controls. I want to set up a user account for games only, but would prefer to leave the games in the shared folder so all users can see them, etc., add more flexibility to what my son can see and do (make more folders visible). Maybe I just have to figure it out.
Oh, and I need to find some seriously large desktop pics! The other ones I had just don't cut it with this large screen size!
